Protesters Storm U.S. Embassy in Baghdad After Iraq Airstrikes

Dozens of people stormed the compound of the United States embassy in Iraq on Tuesday in response to American airstrikes that killed dozens of fighters from an Iran-backed militia group.
American fighter jets on Sunday bombed weapons depots in Iraq and Syria that the U.S. said were linked with a group called Kataeb Hezbollah, which it blames for attacks on coalition bases in recent months.

At least 25 militia fighters were killed in the airstrikes, and on Tuesday a large crowd of supporters gathered after funerals for some of the dead and marched on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone.
They chanted "Down, Down USA!" while hurling water bottles and smashing security cameras, according to The Associated Press. An AP reporter at the scene saw flames rising from inside the compound and at least three U.S. soldiers on the roof of the main building inside embassy.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi issued a statement urging people to leave the U.S. Embassy, warning that "any aggressive behavior against foreign embassies" will be "strictly stopped by security forces" and punished by law.
President Donald Trump tweeted that he expected protection from Iraq's security forces.

Guards inside the embassy used tear gas to try and prevent demonstrators from moving towards main buildings inside the compound, an Iraqi security source told NBC News on condition of anonymity.

At least 10 demonstrators were injured by live bullets and tear gas, according to the Popular Mobilization Forces, an umbrella group for the militias recognized by the Iraqi government. NBC News could not independently verify this claim.

The clashes follow anti-government protests in recent months in which it's claimed hundreds of people have been killed, most of them by Iraqi security forces. The mass uprisings prompted the resignation last month of the prime minister, who remains in a caretaker capacity.

The U.S. blames Kataeb Hezbollah for 11 attacks on bases used by the U.S.-led coalition over the past two months. The latest of these came on Friday, when a rocket attack killed a U.S. contractor and injured four other American service members.

The U.S. airstrikes have been met with an angry reaction from both Iran and Iraq.

The U.S. has some 5,000 troops in Iraq train and assist government troops in the fight against the Islamic State militant group. But the Iraqi government is also allied with a powerful network of militia groups, many of which are backed by or linked to Tehran.
Tehran called the U.S. airstrikes "terrorism" and Iraq called them a "violation" of its sovereignty. The militia targeted has vowed to respond.

U.S. Baghdad ambassador evacuated from embassy amid protests: Iraqi officials

World News
December 31, 2019 / 3:40 AM / Updated 3 hours ago

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. ambassador and other staff have been evacuated from the embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad as protests rage outside, two Iraqi Foreign Ministry officials told Reuters on Tuesday.

The ambassador and staff left out of security concerns. One official said a few embassy protection staff remained. Thousands of protesters and militia fighters gathered on Tuesday outside the main gate of the embassy compound to condemn U.S. air strikes on bases belonging to an Iranian-backed militia in Iraq.

There are debates on twitter as to the staff being evacuated or not - or even if the ambassador was there or on vacation out of the country.

I agree this needs its own thread and was thinking of starting one - this is all too family for those of us who were full adults in 1979...

I hope they are all evacuated and that the confusion is to confuse those who are attacking, not because US diplomatic staff are trapped in the building.

The New York Times, AP and among others are calling these fine people “mourners”.....

I know. I had a hard time digging through the slanted early news reports to find one for the OP that wasn't an OP-ED. Seems some of the largest outlets have some of the shortest memories...

Can we start linking back to original threads when we duplicate posts? It's still a really lousy search function on this site, and we lose the ability to pull up info when its scattered about. ...

The US airstrike on Sunday on Hezbollah bases in Iraq and Syria were in response to attacks on US troops in the region.

ABC News said there had been no reports of any embassy staff hurt in the current rampage.

All security forces have been withdrawn to the inner areas of the embassy with US troops on top of the main embassy building with assault rifles pointed at protestors.

Reuters noted that the US ambassador and other staff members have been evacuated from the embassy. One official said few embassy protection staff remained as the risk of the compound being overrun was high.

Seven armored vehicles with 30 Iraqi troops arrived outside the embassy to assist US forces.

President Trump likely received a briefing on the developments of the embassy on Tuesday morning. He tweeted around 7 am est. saying "Iran killed an American contractor, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will. Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible. In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the embassy, and so notified!"

I dunno smith, things being what they are i am not taking the "breech" at face value, even...
...though it will probably prove to be legit, Im too cynical by far these days to assume it so.

... there's been scuttlebutt about DJT not being in the loop on the initial response to the contractors death...

Iraq's Sadr says he is willing to work with Iran-backed rivals to oust U.S. troops

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr said on Monday he was willing to work with Iran-backed militia groups - his political rivals - to end the United States military presence in Iraq through political and legal means.
If that does not work, he will “take other actions” in cooperation with his rivals to kick out U.S. troops. Sadr’s militia fought U.S. troops for years following Washington’s invasion and toppling of Saddam Hussein in 2003.
Sadr, who portrays himself a nationalist rejecting both Iranian and U.S. influence, called in a statement on Iran-backed militias to avoid “irresponsible actions” that can be used to justify attacks on Iraq.

The fake news will be having a field day over this, no matter which way it goes. It will be spun whatever way it can to make Trump look inept with whatever decisions he makes. I wouldn't be surprised if the Demonrats have some skin in this somehow.

If we "mow them down" you can bet the communist Demonrats will have another avenue to getting rid of Trump.

This sound to well planned to kick off 2020. What a perfect gift

Thankfully, from what I can see being reported (which could be wrong) it doesn't look at this point like there are a lot of women and children involved in the storming of the building.

There are a few women being reported, some in basic military gear but it is mostly adult men.

This should lessen some of the "outrage" if US forces are backed into shooting their way out and/or shooting their way to rescue the US personnel who are still in the building.

The reports of just who is in the building are still all over the map from very few personnel to no comments, which isn't very comforting and suggests there are more folks stuck in there that could become potential hostages than anyone wants to admit.

At least after 1979, no one is going to just "assume" an embassy is safe from being mobbed and taken over.

Yes all doubt has left my mind that it's an orchestrated response from the collusion of rabid rats in iran, the global deepstate, and our national dimocrats who're more vile than i realized possible. I guess the small grace is they made their move "over there" where folks are better prepared to meet, and best, it.

But when this gambit fails, and it will, where do they go next? A street, mall or school in any town USA?l!

What is driving the sudden attacks on American Jews by Black Muslims in New York? I would place very good odds on a little Unconventional Warfare being employed by other interests.

Always always always the simple necessary question is - WHO BENEFITS?

Any chance the reg folk in Iran can catch a break from this? I saw DJT tweet out support to them, but not clear if we're ready to help, or just general encouragement was intended.

...as to who benefits, I do believe the globalicrats will be dismayed to see how few of us fall for their scripts and circus shows.

This is totally Iran. We need to put the blame where it belongs. It will get worse. We need to be ready to kill them all. That place is soaked in our soldiers blood anyway.
