I am officially hiding from the real world for the rest of today. Today did not start well and did not get better. Maybe if I just chill for a while, things will get better. I hate days like this. It's making my brain shut down.
I hear ya! I was sooo out of sorts on July 4th that nothing could make me amenable. The last time I felt like that I hurled junk glass at a wall for 3 hrs. Cheaper than ammo but a mess.
I have spent far too much time in 'robot mode' just getting stuff done. Just dug out an old favorite computer game and I am gonna log some time on it tonite.
Praying your day gets better quickly. Cyber hugs.

I would do that. But then I'd have to clean up the mess. And if I could get a couple of hours at the range, I would take it and eat the bill for ammo. Just to burn through it all. But that also requires facing the van issues, and I do not need that today on top of everything else. That's just a hard no.

I'm about to disappear into a book, with a quiet video of someone working on lawns in the background. I don't know why that works but it does. And just let the brain settle down. Sending hugs your way. Maybe both of us will be feeling better soon.

Well, hugs to you ladies too. I got the church bulletin done, it was creepy being at the church by myself, its back in the woods. One of the nice ladies called to make sure I was okay and we stayed on the phone until I finished and got things locked up and in my vehicle and locked the doors.

I'm feeling normal right now, its a great feeling.

Krysyan it must be something in the air. I am usually pretty laid back, yet today i put someone on ignore who is acting rude and entitled and have shut the door to my office so people leave me alone. Ready to rip off heads and kick butt! Not taking names cause i dont care!

There are very few people I let into my world in real life on a regular basis. Here, on the forum is no different. My ignore list has gotten pretty long. Those are the people who are always getting under my skin for one reason or another. It sure makes my time here more pleasant.

Wooowee! It got up to 62 today so far, that's warm! All my plants are doing the happy growing dance. Finished most of the weeding, and now, on to the lawn - will it ever be finished? The golden chain tree is buzzing so loud with attendant bumble bees that you can hear it from the street.

I watched a video about shelf stable meals. One was for cobbler using a yellow cake mix. I do have a nice recipe for cobbler made from ingredients and not a box, but I decided to try it. I bought a yellow cake mix from dollar tree. I prepared the mix according to the instructions and dribbled a can of apple pie mix all over it. Baked it according to the directions and Dh loved it. I even had a little myself to test it. Probably not something I'll do on a regular basis.

Calmer now. Stomped around feeding the chickens and checking the garden and venting at DH.....who said, let it go (and usually he's the one with the temper!).

It is cold, like Octiber cold, here. Very strange weather. Garden is starting to maybe give a little.

Colorado's WET June is best on record (or so I hear)......more a year's worth all ready...the temps are cooler and before noon I need a jacket of some sort lately....usually my light weight rain jacket.......everything is super green, ponds, reservoirs, streams, lakes, etc. are abundantly filled (according to sources)...but I have no where to even pot a plant...and the sun when it shines is extremely harsh on the tender plants, skin, and eyes........only used a/c a few times and the other night I turned the HEAT ON to take a chill out of apartment before bed..........STRANGE WEATHER.....

High temp today was 74º with a slight breeze so working outside was wonderful. Current temp is 57º, so I've closed windows. I spent 2½ hours clearing purslane redoing what I'd already done plus cleared a large area not previously cleared. I'm now half done with clearing purslane from the garden. I'm sure if a company ever comes up with something to make purslane a profitable crop, mine will die out. Hope that happens soon.

I bought some Round-Up and started spraying the weeds/grass in my driveway yesterday. Checked it today and very little had died so I resprayed the same area and then sprayed a new area. Hopefully more, or better yet most, of what I've sprayed will die. I'm seriously thinking of asking if any of the farmers at church have a propane torch!!

In this morning's Bible study, we finished Gensis after nearly two years. In depth for sure with Pastor leading. In Friday afternoon's Bible study, we are just starting Ephesians which is pretty much self-directed with everyone contributing.

I also spent time in the pantry going through all canned goods and making a list of what I want to add additional to or add new. I have a sense urgency to make sure my supplies are enough for one year. I know I easily have six months but I'm finding it difficult to decide how much is enough without going into hoarding area. I also pulled some older cans and brought them upstairs to be used soon.

the herbicides need a rain after application - spraying in a drought and no rain limit the effectiveness - the weeds won't take in the chems and none of is washed down to the roots >>> and some of them like crabgrass are damn tough - give it time to work

We got another flood late yesterday afternoon. More rain in our forecast for today. Severe storms for tomorrow through tomorrow night. With all the rain and humidity, these rainstorms turn everything into a tropical jungle. It's actually foggy from steam after the rain stops.

I ventured down to the big garden yesterday, before the rain got here. I was amazed how well it's doing. I have squash that are almost ready to gather, and I noticed the green beans are beginning to start blooming, finally. The tomato plants down there are doing better than the ones in the raised beds, just like they did last year. Watermelons have lots of blooms, but haven't found any tiny watermelons, yet. I still have a few bell peppers coming in, but they have slowed way down. Banana peppers are still plentiful. Tomatoes are ripening, but we're eating them as fast as they come in. Hopefully, that will change, because I'd really like to can more for the pantry. I'm gathering cukes about every 2-3 days. While in the big garden, I spotted coon tracks! I didn't see where they had eaten anything, but I haven't been down there this morning, yet.

We're thinking, since the big garden has done so much better than the raised bed gardens for the past 2 years, that we might just do away with them, and stick with only the big garden area from now on. As long as Cary can keep the big tiller going, it will work for us better, I think. He'll need to expand it, but that won't be a problem. I'll turn all the raised beds into flower and herb gardens.

I've got more laundry to do today. I hate having to use the dryer to dry laundry. I can't even set up my drying racks, because with the air so damp with humidity, it will take it a week to dry. The deck has a roof over a part of it, and that's where I set the drying racks up during the summer on rainy days. Usually, it's just a quick shower and it's done. Not with it being so humid, though.

I just don't know what I'm going to do with this husband of mine! He came to the back door and wanted me to come look at something in his workshop. He's been doing some cleanup work in it. Not thinking anything of it, I followed him back out to it. He told me to come inside, so I could get a better look. I did. What did he want to show me? A dang huge chicken snake laying on one of the shelves! I told Cary that he could stay and play with the snake as long as he wanted to, but I was out of there! The snake hangs around in his shop catching rats and mice that might happen to come in. Cary has even named him Roger! I'm glad he told me that he's in there all the time, so I won't be going out there looking for anything! NOPE.

Roger is probably the snake that bit Frisco. We thought George or Oscar, our barn owls, got Rodger the other night, but apparently not. LOL, Cary has named all of our regular critters that hang out on our property.

He's doing lots better, btw. The swelling is going down, nicely.

 I have a friend who calls snakes a 'Nope Rope' I don't mind them, although I'm not fond of timber rattlesnakes or copperheads, which are the two most common venomous snakes around here. I'm actually kind of fond of the blacksnake that lives in one of my flower beds - no mouse problems here.

I've had my cranky pants on for the past couple of days - no clue why; but today is more of the same so I've been avoiding friends and family as much as possible and have taken my mood out on the weeds instead. Must be something in the air - although I think that it is more likely to be my sleep pattern being off.

The neighbor lady is going to come by in a bit to pick me up so we can go to the pool - hopefully that will help my mood. And if that doesn't work, I can always take a nap.

The weather hasn't cooperating as far as gardening goes, but I did get the full lawn mowed last evening. Hopefully I'll be able to get out and till in between the rows in the front garden, and the entire back garden this evening after Hubby gets home from work - he doesn't like me to till if no one else is here.

I hear my ride to the pool coming down the road so I'd better post this and head out - take care all!

A solid night of sleep helps a lot. Brain is back in functional mode, even if today did start off going a bit askew.

The water timer screen is not handling the heat well at all so I wasn't sure that it had turned back on. But this morning when I walked out and checked, the soaker hoses were no longer completely flat and they were moist, so it appears the timer is still working. And after a coolish night, the screen was barely showing enough that it looks like the timer has reset to the first timing cycle. I may disconnect it and pull it in this afternoon to see if I can get it to cool off enough to be fully visible again.

Finished work for today and I am so grateful. I need a longish weekend to regain my sanity. I'm going to focus on normal, everyday chores and tasks all weekend. Just the simple things that help settle and calm because they are the calm, everyday things. And I might have splurged on a few plants. And decided that I'm going to make some of the unique items for the pantry that I like, if the local liquor stores carry the specialty liqueurs. And I'm going to make another batch of my teas. Simple home things.

Kyrsyan, glad to hear that your brain is working better. Sometimes I wonder about mine.

I checked the lab results from my doctors visit on Wednesday. My A1C is normal but could be a little lower, could not find what it was last time it was checked. But my Glucose was 95 where last year it was 110. So that is good. Everything else was normal except the one that looks abnormal but can be related to dehydration, which is normal for me. I just can't seem to get enough fluids in. I drink coffee and water everyday. I know coffee can be dehydrating, but I really don't want to go without my coffee. The weight loss, although only 12 pounds has more than likely helped my blood sugar to be lower.

I went over to the cabin to grab a couple of canning jar boxes. I found two sizes that I need for the cleaned jars, when they are filled I'll cover them in a plastic bag and take them to the cabin. DH built the cabin for my brother, but unfortunately he only spent one night in it, and he died a couple months later. I miss him every day, I could talk to him about anything and there is really no one else in my life that I can talk to that way except my son's ex girlfriend that I have become friends with. She is not judgemental and I'm blessed to have her in my life. I never heard from my sons very often anyway and just about never from their wives. I don't know why I got off on that.

DH is really enjoying the cobbler I made for him from the cake mix. I paid 1.25 for the mix at DT and I looked on line and WM has the same thing for 1.00. I'd buy a few to keep on hand but boxed things like that go bad on the shelf in the box around here. If I do buy some I'll have to vacuum seal the contents in jars.

I guess this is enough rambling.

Judy, if you have freezer space, those boxes of cake mix will last a long time in there. My mom uses different cake mixes for all sorts of things, and she stocks them in her freezer.

I think I saw the recipe you used to make the cobbler on the internet the other day. I thought how simple it would be to make. Looked delicious, too. I don't know why I didn't write it down.

Been forgetting to tell ya'll we have lots of ripe tomatoes, DH has quite of few lined up on the porch rain to finish ripening. If all these get completely ripe at the same time I'm going to have to clean out my dehydrator, can't eat that many at once, and the freezers are full.

its simple mix up the mix, pour it in a baking pan and empty the can of pie filling all around on the top, bake at 350 for up to 40 minutes, different ovens work differently.

Right now I don't have the freezer space.

I wonder how peach pie filling would work. I have that in the pantry along with several boxes of cake mix. I also have plenty of vanilla ice cream to go on top warm right out of the oven! Or reheated in the microwave.

Here’s another quick cobbler recipe which you probably have but just in case you don’t…

1/2 c butter melted in 9x13 dish
Mix 1 c self rising flour 1 cup sugar and 1 c buttermilk in a bowl.
In the meantime place 2 c fruit on top of butter then pour flour mixture on top of fruit. Bake 45 min at 375•

May need to adjust time. Can use any fresh fruit or pie filling. Can use reg milk instead of buttermilk.
Enjoy!

Alright you three - Judy, Sheree, and Philkar; yeah - I'm talking to you guys. I was being good, darn it.

I'm going to go for fresh peaches on top of a little Jiffy yellow cake mix I found in the pantry since I didn't have a full size cake mix, nor self rising flour or buttermilk

Well, we found and obtained Luxardo Maraschino liqueur. But Strega is being much harder to find. And I can't have it shipped to any of the states nearby where I could drive to pick it up from family/friends. But the local liquor store, just across the state line, is going to see if they can get it. It is not available anywhere in Alabama at this time. Well, not anywhere that a AL liquor store can get ahold of it. There may be one hiding in a store somewhere, but that would require calling every liquor store. I'll order it from overseas before I go insane doing that.

Off to make homemade maraschino cherries now.

I picked up 305 more ice pops at Dollar General after we left the pool today since it appears that we are going to be in three more parades. Two small towns (550 & 650 population) and one larger one (5K population), so I'll need to hit up a few more Dollar Generals. One box of 10 might end up in the freezer here at home - Sunkist Smoothie Bars. No high fructose corn syrup and has some fruit juice in it - though likely not much. I'm contemplating spiking the Pina Colada and Mango ones with a little Malibu rum but then I'd have to figure out where to hide them so the grandsons don't accidentally get in them.

Now that I think about it, I bought some Ziploc freezer pop tubes last year and we didn't use them all; and I have fresh peaches on hand, hmmm :hmm:

Hmmm... syringe and some alcohol, and a deep spot in the freezer. Deeper than the kids will dig.

My fingers are purple. There are cherries in Luxardo Maraschino in the fridge. And that is an interesting flavor/scent alcohol. I think I like it.

Friend injured himself severely enough over the holiday that he actually went to the doctor. The doctor put him on muscle relaxants, sent him to a chiropractor, and apparently had a long conversation with him about eating healthier.

Between that and the last few months of me trying to fill his freezer with healthier food, something finally clicked. Well, clicked after a conversation today about how leftovers can last in the freezer for a few months and he doesn't have to rush to eat them all as fast as he can.

Which led to a whole amusing conversation about how I need yet another freezer.

So this evening I get a call out of the blue that starts with asking me about making shepherd's pie. And then jumps to how long to cook a meatloaf. Etc. Etc. And he still doesn't have a meat thermometer. And he prefers a timer. Etc.

I'm done with this argument so there is now a thermometer headed to him that he can just set the temperature and it will sound when the items reaches that temperature. My SIL uses the same style, because, like him, she doesn't want to be tied to the kitchen.

And the phrase that makes me laugh every time: "I'm not cooking. I'm just following a recipe." He is convinced that following a recipe is somehow not cooking. In another year, when he is yet again altering a recipe for his preferences, I'll probably still hear that statement from him.

It has been chilly all day and is 55º currently and supposed to drop to 50º. I dug out winter p.j.'s and robe and put a wool blanket on the bed. I cannot sleep if I'm not warm. We had beautiful rain showers off and on all day. Perfect showers with no downpours or wind so every drop soaked in. I'd bet the corn and bean crops are loving the moisture and when it warms back up the corn will suddenly shoot up a foot.

My summer squash and melons are looking the best they have all season and the tomatoes have grown a lot since we started have these little rains a couple weeks ago. What a blessing. The purslane I didn't get pulled has exploded and the bitty purslane I missed in the portion I weeded has also made itself known. It's supposed to be sunny the next few days so maybe on Monday I can get back to purslane eradication.

I think tomorrow will be a baking day since the high is forecast to be 77º and it will be too wet to work outside.

I opened a can of pears that I received last year from the bi-monthly mobile food pantry, I have never had such awful canned pears -- they were tasteless, hard and woody. It was an off brand I've never seen before and hopefully won't see again! We usually receive a can or two of fruit cocktail or maybe a can of pears or peaches and except for that one can have always been good.

Kyrsyan, here is a suggestion for your friend regarding meatloaf -

I make up a double or triple batch of meatloaf using Buddy's recipe (I was not a fan of meatloaf until I tried his.) Then I divvy it up and put it in pint or quart size freezer bags (I use a vacuum sealer), flattening them out so that they will stack nicely in the freezer.

I thaw it in the fridge, then cut open the bag and make:
*Regular meatloaf - make into a loaf shape and cook in crock pot or bake in oven.
*Cheesy meatloaf - take a bag of thawed meatloaf (that has been flattened out), top it with cheese of choice, roll it up and cook in crock pot or bake in oven.
*Meatloaf burgers - fry it slowly in a skillet like you would a burger - saves heating up the house in summer. (Don't try it on a grill, they will fall apart - ask me how I know  )
*Meatballs for spaghetti - bake in oven or crock pot.
*BBQ meatballs - top meatballs with bbq sauce and bake in oven
*Leftover meatloaf? Crumble it in to a skillet and dump some Manwich sauce on it or use your own Sloppy Joe sauce recipe
* Leftover meatloaf? Crumble it into a skillet, add taco seasoning - use in regular taco shells or make enchiladas.
*Basically use it any way you would ground beef

We got more storms later yesterday afternoon. Power was blinking, but it never went completely out. It's raining and storming right now, again. It's supposed to keep this up all day and into tomorrow. Our heat index is only supposed to be 100, today, so much cooler.

I made it back into the house, before the rain started. I gathered more garden veggies. The grass and weeds are getting pretty bad in the big garden, since it's been too muddy to get in it with a hoe, not to mention the tiller. We need a dry spell for a while and cooler temps.

I'm making a chef salad tonight for supper with all the fresh garden veggies, plus ham, cheese, and boiled eggs. I'm planning to make meatloaf in my new meatloaf pan for tomorrow night. I'm going to be using a different recipe, too. It's the one on the back of Lipton beefy onion soup box. I haven't tried it, yet, so don't know how it will turn out. Since I love to cook, I like trying different recipes. I'm looking for a good recipe for meatloaf that I can stick with. I've tried several already, so I'm going to give this one a shot, too.

Gosh, it's pouring down outside! Can't even see the road from our front door.

We got a decent rain earlier this afternoon, I’m sure the garden is enjoying it.

I‘ve canned green beans 3 times this week. So far I’ve done 15 of the 24 oz jars and 12 pint jars. The yellow squash and cucumbers are going crazy and you’d never guess we only have two hills of each! We’re starting to get a few ripe slicing tomatoes and we have several varieties of cherry type tomatoes that have been abundant, DH picked a gallon bucket of those this morning.

Besides the garden prepping this week, I ordered three of the 6 pack of canned peaches. I really wanted to get some fresh and freeze some this summer but they seem to be hard to come by and very pricey! Local store had whole pork loin on sale at a good price so DH bought two and had them sliced into chops. We kept out enough for Sunday family dinner and the rest have been vac packed and are in the freezer.

Got a pleasantly large harvest from the garden. Not enough to worry about canning or dehydrating yet. But enough to have fresh veg with dinner for a couple of days. And cucumbers to snack on.

I reset the timer for a good long soak at dawn every other day. If the rain keeps coming in, I may switch it to every third day.

Then phone call coaching friend through shepherd's pie. And messenger coaching Mom through dehydrating tomatoes, both slices and powder.

I did end up chilling for most of the day. Good things I had brain candy to read.

Sherree, here is Buddy's recipe in case you want to try another one - it may be the same as the one you're looking at on the Lipton Soup box because it does call for a packet of Lipton onion soup mix.

Buddy's Meat Loaf
2 pounds ground beef (I use 80/20 or 85/15)
1 pkt onion soup mix
8 oz tomato sauce (I use ketchup)
1/3 cup bread crumbs
1 egg
Mix it all together; then put in fridge for a while to let the flavors meld before baking or frying
Bake at 350*f until not pink in the middle - I don't make it in loaf form very often so I just take it out and check for pink in the center.

If you want to use this recipe for meatballs to go with pasta, use the Italian bread crumbs instead of plain.
