I woke up at 4:30 this morning and couldn't go back to sleep. I stayed in bed until around 5:30, cause the house was cold. Waited for Cary to wake up, so he could start a fire while I made coffee. It's nice and warm in the house, now. It's supposed to be up to 71, today.

Home fellowship, today, so nothing gets done, today. We'll have our usual Sunday night carry out pizzas for our supper. We always get pizzas when we have home fellowship. It gives me a break from cooking supper all week. Cary doesn't mind going after them as long as it's not every Sunday.

Morning, to early to really think yet. Just sent hubby o his way down from the boonies to the valley for his early morning meetings. Good Sabbath to you all.

I need to can up the frozen fruit yet, hopefully I can get that done up this week.

After waking up at 3:45, I couldn't go back to sleep and I was cold. I crawled in bed with DH to get warm, and of course it woke him up. I didn't stay long and he got. I finally get a bit more sleep. When I first got up I was coughing a lot and didn't think I'd be able to make it to church. But after my nap I felt better so we are going.

The wake for the couple that were killed is this evening. I want to go, but it depends if I can keep my coughing under control, but we won't stay long. There will be people that I may never see again at the wake. We may go to the roadkill cafe after church.

Upper 60s with a light breeze and full sun! Amazing. I've been puttering in the yard a lot of the day. I also washed my bedding and hung that out to dry.

Snow is in the forecast for Tuesday night. I've got empty gallon water jugs and tarps ready. I think the chives and onions will be fine, but I'm a little concerned about other things that I can't identify, yet. I'm guessing kale and some of the early spring flowers. If it were two weeks later, I wouldn't be concerned, but it's not even March, yet.

Headed back outside: I'm grilling burgers and a few hotdogs for the week.

81 today and too warm for me, yet I got cold last night during the night.

DH went with me to the wake this afternoon. I'm the type of person that just about never meets a stranger, DH is not the chatty type. He ended up sitting in the truck while I was "visiting". I'm glad we went, I was greatful DH went with me. It was nice to see folks I haven't seen in a long time, but also good to put it behind me. I know its hard to lose a loved one, he was my 5th cousin, but knew him all my life, just not that well. God has a plan and it was his and his wife's time to go.

Now we can go back to doing not much. I'm feeling better but still can't quite shake the allergy thing.

High 60’s here today. 70’s tomorrow. Nice on the porch! I am with you Meemur. We have some more cold towards the end of the week and the strawberries already have berries and are blooming heavily. We cover with hay. Onions and garlic beautiful. Brussels are about done. Collards.turnips, and rutabagas are plentious. Greenhouse stuffed! Lost almost all our fruit last year due to late freeze. Praying for different outcome this year! Unfortunately peaches blooming. Win some lose some!
We will continue on with homesteading activities this week and pray everyday for energy and strength!!

It was just cold here all day. The wind was blowing and that always makes my house cold. Dh finally started the woodstove it was so chilly. Everyone just took it easy today after church. Tomorrow is supposed to be really nice and I can’t wait for warmer weather!

Mid 70's today, so cleaned the winter trash off of the asparagus patch and got started trimming the grape arbor. Pulled some brush together and had a nice little fire going. The rest of the week is supposed to be gusty.
Blueberry bushes are starting to bloom. Like philkar, we had a late frost last year that wiped out most of the fruit, but hopefully the plants stored up what they couldn't produce and we'll have a bumper crop ;)

BIL is still undergoing daily chemo, hopefully the docs can get his leukemia under control. A "rare, aggressive" form...have to bite our tongues on it being vax-related, but never had any issues prior. Biopsy scheduled for in the morning, so another week at least. He got a good chuckle from the "chemo sucks" t-shirt we got him.

Been selling off some of the no longer needed vehicles and equipment. Makes room for more recent acquisitions...plus makes the wife happy. Heck, I might even shave my beard!

We finally pulled off our family Christmas today. Pastor asked me this morning we were late or early! He was in Florida when we had the blizzard that caused January cancelation. I have a lot of leftovers so will not have to do much cooking this week. I ended up doing dishes four times today trying to keep up as I went along. DD washed one batch after we ate. At least I will get up to a clean kitchen in the morning.

We're under an extreme fire weather warning through tomorrow. Low humidity and high winds. Then temps down to 10 degrees and snow Tuesday evening/night. My dd said my tulips are up in front of the house but I've been too busy to look. I walked by them on the way to church in a hurry because I was late and then in a hurry coming home so I could get started on our meal. I even swept the sidewalk right by them Sat. evening without looking. I use sand mixed with ice melt on the sidewalk and steps and wanted to sweep it off before everyone tracked it in.

Do any of you follow gDonna Generations Before Us? Her posting yesterday was so helpful. They've had a rough year and are trying to get things under control again and she came up with the idea of doing three things each day beyond normal chores. One of which was something they want to do and the other two needed chores. Also talks about not leaving things as they are when they need to be changed and life is too short to not fix something that can be fixed.

I'm going to use that idea starting tomorrow. My kitchen cupboards need cleaned so I'm going to start even if it's just one drawer a day. One drawer or shelf a day will eventually get them all clean. Not sure just yet what the second chore will be, but it might be not making excuses and to do daily therapy exercises daily. Lately it's been more like every other day and occasionally every third day. I cannot physically afford to slack off this way!

I still haven't decided whether or not to spend $100 or thereabouts on LED grow light and warming tray. I need to plant peppers this week and tomatoes by mid-March so I'll either have them in the living room (which I hate) or need to buy the necessary soon. Lights in the basement sounds much better than the living room bow-bay window.

I have a bottle of Lysol that I bought three years ago and could never get open. I'd had several other people try to no avail. My grandson opened it first try. I'll be able to use it when I wash cupboards.

It's supposed to be 75 degrees and sunny, today. My plans are to work in the yard. I need to get the big planter pots ready for planting. Bell peppers will go in those. I also have some work to do in the raised beds. Cary decided he wants to grow a few tomatoes, squash, and flowers in them this year. We aren't planning anything big. If it were left up to me, all the remaining raised beds would be taken down, and we would only use our small garden plot from now on. It's large enough to grow what we want and is a lot less trouble than the raised beds. It has its own irrigation system, too.

I'll be sitting here catching up on all the news while I wait for it to warm up a bit more outside.

Building a gravity fed outdoor shower on skids today. 4'x4' shower/changing room with a double sink mounted outside on the back wall. ( SS sink came from the dump/free).

Sinks will make a great garden produce wash station this summer for Mrs. Attilla.

We have numerous water sources and expect guests if SHTF.
Beefing up infrastructure to handle them while I can replace materials seems like a good idea.

We have those camp shower bags, too. Our plans are to use the water hose from our 650 gal rainwater tank during the summer, and we'll use our camp shower bags inside during the colder months. Just hang them from the shower head in the bathtub filled with hot water from our wood stove.

I've always wanted an outdoor shower and bathtub, but it's a "no go" for Cary.

I like the idea of an outdoor, rainwater, gravity fed sink for the garden. But I think I'll go looking because if I remember correctly there are some foot pedal styles that won't need the large barrel above my head.

And outdoor shower for the backyard is in the plans. After the rainwater systems get in place. And I'll probably do the same thing that my grandparents did, a large metal tub that you fill in the morning so it will be warm by evening. Maybe a set of drums for water.

The barn cat was missing this morning and I guess she decided that she'd worried me enough when she showed up about 10:30 AM wanting lap time, and breakfast --- in that order. I've tried to convince her to be an indoor cat at night but she's not having it.
I managed to get half a wheelbarrow of brush cut before my back and knees gave out. I still had to get the rest of my chores done. but I made myself do that first. Husband refuses to start the lawnmower for me. He's perfectly capable of doing it, he just won't. I could mow it in 20 minutes and be done. It's going to take me days to do it by hand. I have to have it cleared so I can access livestock gates.
I don't have an outdoor shower, but I do stretch the black hose out in the sun and just spray off when I get hot. My summer uniform is a tank bathing suit., and it dries really fast. I have a plastic chair that I sit in to wash my hair. I actually prefer doing it outside.

I got everything that I set out to accomplish done, today, except pulling the tomato cages from the raised beds. Cary will have to do those. I tried, but I just couldn't get them out of the ground. Planter boxes are ready to be planted with green bell peppers, once the weather warms and stays warm. It's so nice out, today, and I got my walk in after the chores were done. The sun really felt good on my skin, but I still have to be careful about getting too much at one time.

Having left over pizza for our supper tonight. Yum.

I cooked bacon in the oven today and that is what we are having for supper, with pancakes or waffles (both from the freezer). We haven't had bacon for awhile so there probably won't be any left. I did not get much bacon grease from it though and i cooked a pound. Oh well, I still have come bacon up containers on the shelf.

Sunny and too warm for me. Its 82 here at my desk and I have my little fan on.

Went to the county courthouse and renewed my driver's license for another two years. After a certain age you have to renew every two years and I'm well past "that" age. Also grabbed a free state map. I keep the new one in the car and bring the one from the car into the house. So handy to look up locations. I consider having paper maps an important prep.

I went into a trash & treasures shop and spent way too long browsing. As I think I mentioned several times I've been looking for sweatshirts and I found one that appears never to have been worn for $2.50. I also found a denim shirt that I've been hoping to find for ages for $4.00. Totally unnecessary but I also bought 10 paperback books by a favorite author -- they were marked $1.00 each but the lady rang them up for $7.50. I think because I bought so many. I've also been looking for kitchen chairs for 4 years and think I will go back and buy 4 that she had for $170. My back was hurting so I didn't go downstairs to look around so will do that next time I go over before purchasing the chairs. Hope they are still there!! With tax everything came to $14.98 which is less than half the price of a new sweatshirt, so I was happy.

I then went to the grocery store and spent $32.19 of the gift certificate dd & grandson gave me yesterday. Two $9.00 frozen pizzas for $3.99 each on sale, two 12 packs of Pepsi for $8.99 each and a third one free so bargains on totally non-nutritious food items. I guess I could put those into the miscellaneous category in my budget. :lkick:

I think my supper will be fish sticks and frozen French fries in the air fryer just to keep things quick and simple since I wasted so much of my day "shopping".

Morning all!
More of the same for me here. I am actively working on trying to use up items and work down from the freezer a bit.
Hubby was given a double composting barrel setup from a neighbor the other day which he will gladly use. He looked it up, and a new one cost almost $900. He was shocked. They had bought it a few years ago with good intentions that never came to fruition. They are happy to see it go to someone who will use it.

Hubby’s small greenhouse is doing great. Lettuce and Asian greens like crazy. He plans on getting some potatoes going outside and has started his seedlings for peppers.

One thing I need to do on a long(er) tern to do is to completely revamp my closet. I just have WAY too much in there (of all different sizes). I am deferring this project away for. fee months though. Lol

Hope you all have an amazing day!

Hubby has been working on the front end of one of our 2002 truck. Last week he (we) did the passenger side ball and u joints. Now we are working on the driver side. He does all the mechanical work. I just help by getting tools and putting things away. I am also the finder of lost nuts and bolts that try to escape and hide. Hubby is a brilliant mechanic. His back injury means the jobs take longer, but they are done right when he is finished.

I dropped our taxes off at the CPAs office. I am still waiting on my corrected 1099 from my contract job. I hope to have it any day. I can drop it off when it comes, but at least we are in the line at Zachs office.

Hubby rented a tool from ORileys to do the ball joints. While in town we went in tractor supply and bought 8 Buff Orpington chicks. Then when we took the tool back, we went in Atwoods and bought 6 more. Only the Atwood chicks I had my doubts that they were Buff Orpingtons. They had a thin brown line on the top of their head. But no other brown markings. There is some brown showing in the wing feathers now. We will see what they look like in a few weeks.

For the other side of the truck, he rented a tool from Auto Zone. He is going to buy this one. It made the job much easier.

I got the garden started. I planted 3 bundles of strawberries and my onions. Today I hope to get some sugar snap peas and part of the potatoes planted. We have a plum tree in bloom and color showing on 2 more. There are some of the peach trees about to pop with blooms too. We will probably loose the fruit on those. Our cold is not over.

Our Harps has not had any heads of lettuce the last 2 times I was in there. I bought a small bag of lettuce. Thursday when we get the grandkids, we will stop in Russellville at a bigger store and get more lettuce of some kind. I should have grown some. I did buy a 10 pound bag of cane sugar at Harps. It was over $11. :gaah: I also noticed large eggs were 3.98 a dozen. I will try to see how much they are in Russellville when we go.

We are thinking of buying one of those portable buildings. I have wanted a shed to store my stuff in for years. My extra canning supplies and canners, ice chest, buckets, ect. They are either in the attic, on the loft of the shop, or under the house. I am tired of climbing ladders or duck walking to get what I need. The older I get the harder it is. I also think it would/could serve as an extra bedroom if things go belly up.

Have a good week everyone.

With the second hand chickens that DH got recently we are just about back in the egg business, at least 8 a day. I hope the ladies at church want them from him again. And the beautiful pullets (16) that he bought last fall have not even started laying yet. The fellow he got the second hand chickens from just didn't want to fool with them anymore. 10 hens of different breeds. We are both glad to have chickens again, I missed seeing them run around out in the chicken yard. I have a good view from my office window.

I'm still hacking and coughing but feel better, just no energy. It almost makes me want to take the allergy shots, but after dealing with it all these years I know I won't do it. I just don't like the idea of being tied to the medical system on a regular basis.

Another beautiful day, today. 78 for our high with sunny skies. I'm going to be outside enjoying it, too, as much as I can. Cary split and stacked almost a half cord of firewood, yesterday, and he'll do even more, today. He can only do so much at a time, before his leg begins to hurt him. He'll be seeing his PCP soon, so we'll know more about surgery to remove the lipoma.

Rain and only 66 degrees, tomorrow, so I'll wait to do all my housework tomorrow.

Just came in for lunch. We've got the deck/patio and furniture all cleaned and ready for outdoor living. Grill is all ready to go, too. Cary had to replace the grate in it for this year. He kept the old one in case we might need it for something else. During the warm months, the deck/patio is just another room of the house. We live out there a lot. We just open the double French doors, and another room has been added for us to enjoy all spring and summer into late fall.

While Cary is working on the woodpile later, I'll go for my walk while he's doing that. My walks are definitely helping with my back pain. I haven't had any problems with sciatica, since I began my walks again. I'm hoping to be able to drop a few pounds from it, too. I've picked up a few pounds over the winter that I want to get rid of.

Spaghetti with homemade meat sauce and garlic toast tonight for supper. I wish I had salad fixin's to go with it, but since I wasn't able to do my mid-month grocery shopping, I'm all out, until payday and my first of the month shopping day. I do miss my fresh salads and veggies.

High winds with temps dropping. Snow is in the forecast for tonight.

I've been working online today. I'm going to take a lunch break soon, go for a quick walk and then heat up some soup. I really like working at home. I get tons more done, and I don't have to listen to the all of the drama.

(Yes, I'm hunting for different employment. I'm shifting into "retirement" work.)

Hope everyone has a great day!

DDIL works from home for a large bank in our region. She works in the fraud dept. and loves it. She's not into a lot of drama, either and also, she doesn't have to dress up to go into the office anymore, unless a teleconference is scheduled.

I had a late start to the day. Woke up very early and was awake for quite a while before I fell back to sleep. Ended up sleeping until 10:30 which really isn't that bad considering I went to bed at 2:00 a.m., just makes for a mixed-up day.

Digger - Renting tools is such a good idea for once-in-a-while jobs or until you find "the one" that you must own. Over the years we rented a chipper and jackhammer amongst other things. Never bought anything we rented although the chipper was one we would have liked to buy. Renting is so nice as it means you do not have to maintain or store the machine.

Nomife - Several friends and my sister all have had the crud lately and all report not having much energy or starting a project to only run out of energy midway through. I found allergy shots totally worthwhile. My kids all had them when young and I started mine around age 32. I had to take them much longer, but they have helped me tremendously. I still have allergies but not nearly as severe. Also, if you decide you need to quit, you can without any negative issues other than not getting the full benefits of finishing.

Meemur - I have a friend who is disabled due to brain injury who is hoping to get a job working from home. She is very smart, but the injury affects her ability to function in an office situation. She's just now starting to investigate the possibilities. Any suggestions I could pass on to her would be appreciated. She is willing to go to the community college for retraining. I liked working from home using Go-to-my-PC which my boss paid for but did not understand. I explained (more than once) that I was doing the work on my office PC and nothing was "on" my home PC. I could do a days work in half a day due to no interruptions.

Yesterday with the entire state under an extreme burn warning a man in N. Central Iowa started burning and managed to burn his house down and almost himself. He had one leg was burned quite badly. Once his clothes caught fire, he was majorly fortunate to escape with just a burned leg. I simply cannot imagine why anyone would burn when the wind was blowing regardless of any warnings. Karma sure bit him hard and fast.

I keep a close eye on DH when he's burning brush piles. Although he is careful, just makes me nervous. Fire is our biggest danger in our neck of the woods.

DH is across the road cutting some pine trees down so he can mill some lumber for one of his projects. He needs lumber for the flooring in my camper. The wood he put down, cedar, is too soft to hold up on a floor. There is still a ways to go on the camper but he's also gotten a lot done.

I've done a few things but just don't feel well. I need to look for my manuka honey, its in the china cabinet, it usually is very beneficial, I'd just for gotten about it.

PM me with more details. I can make better recommendations to you privately if I know:
- what field(s) has she worked in / does she want to work in?
- education/certificates/training
- Is she in Iowa? Where?
- Also, she might be able to get free retraining through Iowa Workforce Development, depending on her injury.

@nomifyle I love your term second hand chickens! I sure hope you feel better soon.

This week has busy starting with the kids and grands coming over on Sunday. Little granddaughter asked if she could have a sleepover with us that night and since we usually have her on Mondays anyways, I said yes. She can keep both DH and I hopping but we enjoy having her. She’ll be turning 5 yrs. old in a few weeks and it’s just hard to believe, time has flown by so fast. So yesterday was spent with her, doing many loads of laundry, working in the kitchen and other chores.

Today DH and I took care of some things at our Credit Union. When getting some information last week about some things we wanted to do financially DH found out that our daughters weren’t listed as beneficiaries on our accounts there although I know at one time they were supposed to be so that’s been taken care of. We also went to the last day of early voting and took care of that while we were out, probably won’t do one bit of good but we try.

Among other chores today and errands, I got the coal stove cleaned out. We usually have a day during the winter with warm enough temps. Boy what a huge mess. I also did the floors and so on.
We've been working outside a bit. Climbed up and down dozen times on big ladder inside and outside barn to get power mast raised up. Its better. Sons coming over this weekend to help. Scot got his old truck running with some better batteries. He was very happy. Now it needs part of brake line. So we got that and they will work on it this weekend.
I'm concerned about our peach and pear trees. They are starting to bud and I don't want to lose the fruit. I think we can throw blanket or sheet over them? The grandsons so enjoyed planting them few years ago and they got a ton of fruit off them last year.

I'm still working on the house. Got the pantry all done, 8 hours of hard work one day. Finished baseboards in hubs man cave. Still so much to do. Got the two bedrooms upstairs on other side of house pretty much done except for kids stuff they need to get. Downstairs bedrooms cleaned and ready for reno this summer.
Scot is doing really well but has episodes of Tachycardia that come and go. I'm afraid he is going to have to give up coffee. That seems to make it worse and drinking water brings it back down.
Took boys to library where they live for a tween night. We had a good time and they enjoyed being with all the kids. We still do storytime on Thursdays and I'm doing that and we are halfway thru White Fang.

I am trying to perfect my homemade condiments, specifically Mayo and catsup and mustard. Anyone with suggestions or recipes?
Got my new grow lights hung in the greenhouse replacing the old ones that have seen their better days. Glad to get that done! Lots of flowers seeds in flats! It all looks great to me.
All of our fruit trees are blooming. Yikes! We have lots of strawberries already. But when I look at my garden journal from last year they are only about 2 weeks early.
Had lunch with old friends today was a nice break!
Any of you that are running out of baseboards to clean please come on over! Have I got a few for you!
