I'm finally awake and getting started myself. I don't want to leave the wood heater, though. The house is warm, but it's warmer by the heater, with another cup of coffee.

Everything is ready for our home fellowship/bible study this morning. I'm sure the weather will be on everyone's minds. DDIL and her mother are from northern Montana, so this cold spell will be nothing for them. They both thrive in cold weather.

It's supposed to start snowing/icing tonight around 7 pm. It's 26 degrees right now with the high today of 30. Low tonight of 22. Tomorrow's high of only 22.

-8 right now in our corner of KC. Wind chill -27. Freaking cold. Icicles on outlets inside house.

Had a serious prayer answered yesterday. We got out to go to a discount store. While we were out we hit a couple other stores. DH desperately needed pants but hates to shop. One of those son in laws that calls him dad and means it managed to get him into a dressing room with a few pair to try on. 30 min later DH has at least 5 pairs of pants and a couple nicer shirts for dinners in Florida. At a price we can deal with. Thank you God! This was such a weight off my shoulders!

Fell asleep last night listening to the grands having a sleepover. Love those giggles.

Both of our kids in KC area were prepared for weather. When they were growing up we would lose power for a month at a time. We left water dripping, cabinet doors open, etcetera back in Arkansas. 3 deg there this am. My chickens are wintering at a friend's. Our cows and cousins cows have been having sleepovers for awhile. Young cousin told DH not to worry about cows this winter. He has us covered. Another blessing.

Will brave the cold Monday when we take grands to coop homeschool. Might fly out for Florida a couple days early.

Got word last night that a friend of ours died suddenly. Super nice guy we grew up with. Just spoke with him 2 days ago. He was our insurance agent and got us credit for DH'S retirement on our homeowners. We are recognizing far too many faces in the obits. Another dear friend finished radiation treatment Friday. (Breast cancer. She is in her 40's.)

Kids had some good suggestions on the downsizing we are dealing with. I know if something happened to us they would deal with it but I do not want to leave them that kind of legacy.

Gonna leave my warm nest in search of coffee. Yeah, it is 9 am and no one is moving. I am snug in a very comfortable bed with the softest blankets on the planet. :D

Ya'll be safe and have a blessed day.

Our temp at 6 am was 0. The high will be 6 and a wintery mix will start around noon. Good day for a fire and bowl of chili.
So far I've gotten the rest of the turnips put in the fridge, put a pot of water simmering for some humidity and texted my sister. We text every morning, she's single and that's our way of saying we're OK.
Stay safe and warm. I'm looking at beach destinations for later.

Good Morning, All!

-10* here this morning, with a brisk breeze from the west/north-west..... and someone couldn't find her gloves when it was time to feed the outside cats  - I'd left them in the van, and of course. the doors were frozen shut. I ended up grabbing a pair of my wool socks out of the drawer and pulled them over my hands and they worked just fine. Note to self: stop at Rural King and get more wool socks - and a pair of wool gloves, while I'm at it... I might grab another pair of fleece lined leather ones while I'm there - never hurts to have extras.

No sign of any of the outdoor cats other than a few pawprints where they've gone in the shed - I put out dry food in the shed as the wet food just freezes. There are plenty of cozy nooks and crannies in the shed, as well as a heated mat. I put out plenty of feed for the wild birds while I was outside - will put out more this afternoon as they are chowing down.

No power outage at home so far, but crews were working in other areas. They have been working through the night and continue today. There isn't a lot of snow on the ground - maybe an inch, inch and a half; and none in the forecast. Temps are going to be doing the yo-yo thing - they are supposed to be in the low 40's by the weekend.

I've got somewhere I have to go every week day this week - except maybe Thursday - but I'm sure daughter will take care of it. Bleah.

I think I'll go back to bed now

The high today is 35, it was 66 in the house when I got up, I have the termostat set on 69 and it was running, I turned it off. The wood stove was slow to warm things up but its getting there, now its 70 in my office.

I looked outside and saw the goats and the dog, the dog sleeps with the goats, I hope she will be alright tonight when we have a hard freeze with sleeting rain and the high tomorrow is supposed to be 27 and raining. People around here will go nuts.

We are staying home from church, too cold to get out. I can praise the Lord here at home.

We are at 32, feels like 25. I'm testing out the new thermal legging and socks. Socks aren't worth crud. But the thermals seem to be working okay for now. The body is definitely running hot though. Just went out in that with an open jacket, hat, no gloves and was almost too warm.

But I can work with this. For others the thermals would probably not be warm enough. For me they are just enough to not trigger an overheat in the house.

Kerosene jug is full. First time I've seen red kerosene in a while. Might have to go to my old place. I'll pay the $1.50/gallon more if they're still selling clear from the pump. But for now, we are set.

I put the wintershield covers on the windshield and mirrors. That way, if I do have to go somewhere, I shouldn't have to scrape. Because if I have to go somewhere it's likely to be because of an emergency and scraping will take time I may not have.

I had forgotten about frozen doors. I may have to climb in through the rear and heat the van up if that's a problem. I haven't really found a better solution for that.

Another friend is coming for a bag of clothes. I'm already building a new thrift pile. The section I'm working on now is mainly sewing and knitting projects. But I have some other things that need doing today so this likely will be work on again during the week.

Son has found his go bag and keeps exploring what he can reach without pulling it out of its spot. I keep finding random toys set down on the shelf near it. I definitely need to order the zippers and do the pattern design to make some bags that fit the space better. But it is mainly him being more aware as his headaches decrease and wanting to explore. The old "I'm bored" issue. I just have to figure out where to redirect that energy to.

Anyways, going to drink my allowed dose of morning caffeine and then get moving on the rest of today's work.

For frozen doors, I've found that double folding a 33 gallon trash bag and slamming it in the door keeps it from freezing so hard that I can't yank it open. Of course sometimes the ice will just drip inside and soak the driver's seat, so placing a couple extra trash bags over it is a good idea as well. If I could figure out how to keep my car from freezing to the ground I'd be good to go.

Psychgirl, re: channeling hoarding grandmother -- storing food is not hoarding if you are eating it! (from last thread). :geek:

Oh, geez! The temperature has risen a whole two degrees! It's now a balmy -10 (actual). Yes, I went out earlier to start the car and check the furnace vents and such. They were fine. I also worked on the floor. I have about six rows of laminate boards laid. It's getting faster with those initial rows down. Again, it's not hard, it's just having to work nearly lying down. I need a car creeper! LOL.

My street has been plowed, but the only cars out were the hospital employees. I think all of the churches in the area are either closed or doing online services. I think HyVee is open, but getting there could be highly problematic. The plows are out but the police are still asking us to stay off the roads until later today, when possible. They realize people need to check on relatives or go to work, in some cases. In Ohio, they would generally ticket you if you were out during a Level 3 emergency.

Yes, I'm going to make more tea and go hang out in the recliner and read. It's nice not to have to go anywhere, and if I did, I'd call in sick. In no way did I want to be outside longer than it took for those quick chores earlier. Brrrrr!

It's 1* here and I just heard the shower start, so I'm guessing DH will be heading out to plow. My plan for the day includes changing the sheets, laundry (it will dry quick with the woodstove cranking!), and some baking. And maybe working on taxes. I got my CO sales tax filed and paid yesterday - it's due 1/20.

I"m hopeful for a 'normal' week.

- 3 here. windchill -26, We are so blessed to have a woodburner. I baked bread and made a chocolate pie. Cleaning out closets. As many of you,I feel the urge to get things emptied out. Not sure why since I am a packrat by nature. If I think I or someone else may need an item then I keep it.

Getting colder. We are getting the micro ice pellets and they are sticking. So if it does snow, it's not likely to melt.

Barometric is changing. I realize this because the humidity level in son's room is changing again. Yesterday the humidifier ran all day trying to keep the humidity level. Today it hasn't run since noon. I think I'm going to have to order the wall mount storm glasses.

Anyways, I hope everyone is safe and warm.

10:00 p.m. Sunday, currently -16 with windchill of -36. Hibernating until the numbers are on the plus side.

We were supposed to have our family "Christmas" Saturday, but it was cancelled due to weather. Highway was closed at some point and not sure when it reopened. Yesterday it was no travel advised and today snow-covered road. One grandson came Thursday evening to get ahead of the storm and ended up here until late today. It was nice to have a long visit as it's usually just an afternoon.

One thing I realized is that my food storage is plenty for one but add a man and it quickly isn't. Not a problem for a few days, but in a SHTF situation it could become critical much sooner than I'd like. One thing for sure in a SHTF situation, guests will all be on a diet of necessary calories instead of as much as they want to eat. Won't hurt any of us to lose a few (or many) pounds!!

I don't know if it would work for car doors, but I was told to wax the bottom seal of my garage door with car wax, and it would not freeze down. It has not yet frozen down during this frigid weather. I washed the seal thoroughly, let it dry and then gave it a heavy coat of car wax a couple months ago. I sort of recall hearing that using a hair dryer can help with frozen doors. Never tried it so will not recommend doing so!!

My car has not been started for a week. Grandson was parked in driveway near garage and so even with the drive being plowed 4 times, the drift in front of the garage remains. I don't want to run the car in the garage even with the door open and didn't want to back out and risk getting stuck in the drift. I'll not be surprised if I have to have it jumped. Grandson dug a narrow path through the 4' drift on the sidewalk. I am tempted to widen the path but have been forbidden snow shoveling by my doctor even before my back issues.

Church was cancelled for today due to weather. Our Pastors (married couple) were due back from Florida but flight was cancelled. Good friend and her son ended up spending a night (or more?) in a Des Moines motel after their flight to Florida was cancelled. Just saw a Facebook post by a cousin whose flight to Florida was cancelled. Hibernation has never looked better!

We are without hot water. My dh discovered we had a leak in the hot water tank, of course. It's 0 degrees and we have 2 inches of snow. He's having to fill buckets instead of using a hose but it's almost empty. Just took him a big cup of hot tea. It's going to be hard to find a plumber tomorrow I'm thinking I'm sure there are tons of broken pipes to deal with. Oh well, we'll at least get on the list. Of course my kitchen is not cleaned up from all the cooking I've been doing. We'll make do. At least we have water in the house but it's been trying to freeze even with it running and a heater under the cabinet. Pray for us please!

At 11 PM, -6 with wind chill of-21 degrees.

I had to get out around 7:30. My wife wanted some Wendy's chili. She has been sick for three days. She is finally starting to get better. She caught a cold from her youngest son. He caught it at the hospital where our daughter was having surgery. Dang hospitals are full of sick people. Anyway no problems getting around. Just too cotton picking cold. Plenty of food in the house, but my wife wanted chili. Neither one of can stand any of the canned chilis on the market. I treated myself to some broccoli beef on fried rice from the pseudo-Chinese place two door down from Wendy;s. We both got Frosties.

Arkansas is in the deep freeze for us. We went below freezing Saturday afternoon and will not get above freezing till Wednesday afternoon. We got at least 3 inches of powdery snow. Roads are slick. It was 5* last night when I got up to add wood to the stove. I love our wood heater. It has kept us warm for many years.

Many businesses are closed today. Some of the factories too. We are in for the duration. There is no place we need to go. We finished my job last week when the weather was good and hubby is retired. I just go out to tend my chickens and cats. I fed the wild birds too. Hubby is staying in unless we loose power. He would get the generator if we need it. But with his back, slipping on the snow could really hurt him. He gets wood off the porch during the day and we bring in plenty for night.

I am finishing a book I had started. Yesterday we cooked homemade pizza. Today we will eat leftovers from the fridge. I also still have to work on taxes. So there is plenty to keep me busy.

Minus 10 again when I first went out this morning; up to minus 6, with a projected high of 10 later today. Neighbor lady is determined to go to the pool so I'm going to take a couple of hair Bands and clips with me and see if I can fix a frozen Cindy Lou Who hair-do on the walk back to the truck afterwards. Why yes I AM getting stir crazy after just 2 days going on 3...

It's 18 degrees right now with the real feel temp at -3* with snow and ice coming down. Our high today at 21* with the real feel at 12*. Winter Storm Warning in effect until tomorrow.

Our wood stove and wood heater are going, with a big pot of homemade taco soup simmering on the stove. We have no plans for today other than Cary bringing in more firewood. We were watching a herd of deer meandering around just over our back fence line this morning. All does (5), then a big buck stepped out after they finally went into the woods. Cary said it was at least a 6 point. He uses his binoculars to see them better.

Still praying for everyone.

-4 with snow coming this afternoon. Making a run to replace a grands suitcase and pick up some shorts for one of the kids. Rearranging my luggage so it is now filled with Florida clothes instead of thermals.

Grands approved the snack bag I packed for flight. My Temu waterproof cross body bag made it just in time. Credit cards and gift cards are in rfid sleeves. Gotta make sure the portable chargers are packed. DHs phone needs frequent charging.

Clothing for each day is in a zip lock bag. Makes it easy to get dressed. Have lived in my flannel jammies for past few days. Only get dressed to go out.

Trip will be organized chaos with multi family and a crap ton of luggage. We are all excited and so ready. Grands do not know the actual day we are leaving. That will be a surprise.

Talked to Grands in Arkansas last nite. Everyone safe and warm. Our young friend who passed away got Covid and had a stroke. Another elder friend died yesterday of old age. Both funerals are postponed until weather breaks.

Stay warm and safe.

Said a prayer for you, Paxsim. Nothing worse than plumbing problems when it's this cold!

Hope your eye is better, SB.

It's -5 here (actual temp) and partly sunny. I got four more rows down on the floor (almost half-way!)

[I'm laying snap-together laminate flooring. It's easy, but I have a bad back and have to work slowly.]

I have not gone outside, yet. I'm waiting until noonish, and then I'll go check the vents, and if the roads look OK, I'll start my car and drive around town for a few minutes. Per our neighborhood Facebook page, the roads are mostly clear: the problem is the -30 chill factors or whatever they are. The schools are out anyway for MLK Day, and also to get Caucus sites ready (many are in school gyms). The Caucuses start at 7:00 tonight, with doors opening at 6:00 and we're encouraged to be there by 6:30.

Stay warm, everyone!

Hope your eye is better, SB.

It's healing slowly. All the swelling is gone, but it's still red around the bite marks. It still itches and burns like crazy. I took some Benadryl last night to stop the itch enough that I could go to sleep. All the necrotic tissue came off in the shower this morning. It left a big hole in my eyebrow. I hope that will fill back in, in time.

I made a meatloaf yesterday using a new recipe, and put panko in it. This is the first time, ever, that I made a meatloaf that I did not like, yuck. DH did not complain so go for it. I need to make another pot of soup.

The rain and sleet held off until just a few minutes ago, coming down pretty steady. DH has already brought in a good supply of wood, but we do go through it. Good thing he has a good supply already cut.

Its cold. I had the oven on to cook the meatloaf longer and the kitchen was warm enough for me to get some things cleaned up. I'm trying to make hay while the sun shines, old expression. Get it done while we have power and water.

We don't need to go any where and don't need anything. We are blessed.

My meatloaves are always a hit or miss. Using my same recipe, sometimes it will still fall apart into a mush. Still tastes good, and Cary doesn't complain when it happens, but I don't make meatloaf often, because of that.

It's still sleeting and snowing here. We are being warned of possible power outages due to ice accumulations. Cary just refilled both firewood racks in the house. He does it big, so he only has to do it once in a 24 hr. period. Our overnight low is going to be 13* with real feel at 3*.

There is no where we need to go, and we're stocked to the brim. I have a dentist appt. next Monday, but until then, we're staying put.

I don't care if it falls apart, although DH would complain. I just don't like the taste. But he's eating it.

The wintery mix didn't last long, may get a little more later. DH brings his wood in in 5 gallon buckets, no where to stack it here in the house. Its in the 20's outside and 72 here in my office. Its warm enough that I've taken my robe off.

Still working in the kitchen off and on, I've made tremendous strides, but still some to go. I've got ground meat cooked and I'm pretty sure I'm going to start a pot of vegetable soup.

They make firewood racks that are basically like big book ends that slide onto 2x4s it's what we have. It's nice because you can cut the 2x4s to the length that you have room for, and also because you can just take them apart and store them easily in the summer.

If your issue is that you have carpeting you don't want to stack wood on, or get filled up with sawdust and chips where you put the rack then just get a cheap 4x8 tarp and fold it in half lengthwise and put it down to stack on.

If you're just a bit tight on cash right now the cheapest way would be to spend $5 on the tarp and stack on it crosshatching the ends to keep it squared up and tied together.

Making a bunch of trips with buckets would suck and if it's slippery out the less trips the less chance of a fall.

And for those of you heating with electric I feel for you. It never really feels warm and it's by far the most expensive way to heat your house. Hopefully this cold snap doesn't last too long.

In the living area where our wood heater is located, we bought a firewood rack. It fits nicely against the wall right next to the wood heater. It's made of small round logs fitted together. In the laundry room (extension of my kitchen) where the wood stove is located, I bought a huge handmade woven very sturdy wicker basket years ago that holds all of the stove wood. It sits beside the stove. Both works out great for us. Both will hold 24 hrs. worth of firewood.

We have 2 large old copper boilers that hold the firewood and fit on either side of the woodstove and a very large round copper pot two at least 2 feet in diameter ..that holds back up for cold like now...

we have two large round racks by the back door that are covered with a tarp..... those will hold about four to five days wood for times when have ugly weather..... the main of the firewood is farther from the house and covered
