We got snow last Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. Very little built up at our house because we stayed just above freezing. But town and south got more. Our daughter still had snow in the shade at her house yesterday.

Our daughters service pole broke off at the ground from the extra weight. So they have been without power since Wednesday. They have run on generator power some each day. Yesterday morning we went over and help them set a new pole. Now the electrician and the electric company have to do their parts. Some of that may be done today. But the electric company is going to set another pole. The original run was too long, but may have been within guidelines at the time it was put up, years ago. My daughter was telling our 5 year old grandson that in years past everyone lived without electricity all the time. He said "Well, that stinks!" LOL When we got the kids for the day, I also brought laundry home to do for daughters family.

I have property in another county. It was part of my grandparents farm. The snow and wind did have damage to the old barn. My son is over there at his cabin and sent pictures. One crib maybe ok that runs down one side. The barn was built by my grandfather. I hate to see it go but that is life. My son will use some of the tin to make a wood shed. We had insurance on it. We maybe able to get a small new barn put up.

We may get some winter weather again this week. This one is looking to trend to more ice. I hope it warms and we just get rain. Freezing rain does so much damage. But we are ready if it does freeze. We are filling the wood racks on the porch today. The big one is almost full. But the small one is empty

I butchered 2 more roosters. I still have 6 to do, but my fingers were aching too much to do more. We will see, maybe I can do some later today. My thyroid has been acting up. Usually I can keep it within normal to borderline range using supplements. This morning I took 1/2 of a prescription medication. I feel better already with less joint and muscle pain. I just hope I can sleep at night. Even low doses keep me from sleeping and sometimes cause the symptoms I am trying to remedy.

Praying for you ladies.

Rain, Rain, Rain. Its warmer today but rain tomorrow with colder temps, not cold enough for snow though.

I put coconut oil in my coffee this morning instead of butter, tastes just fine.

Last night we had dinner at friends house, fried fresh catfish, yum. Coconut oil came up in the conversation last night and duh, I know it helps memory and had forgotten the wonder of it. So its going to be coconut oil every day even if I just eat a spoonful of it. You can get it without the coconut taste, but I don't mind that myself.

Its so funny watching the goats. They hate to get wet. So if the rain stops they come out and when it starts again they all run to get out of it.

Time to get ready for church, have a blessed day.

Feel free to tell me I sound cranky this morning - I keep telling myself to knock it off, but I don't think I'm taking the hint!!

First - this weather has been bipolar as heck! It warmed up in to the low 40's briefly yesterday, but is now back into the high 20's with a little freezing rain thrown in just for entertainment value. Hubby is on call again this weekend and got a call at 5 am to come in to work, so I hope he got there safely. Temps are going to continue in the 20's through today, then drop into the teens on Tuesday with possible snow; and Wednesday is the same before edging back up in to the 20's. I don't know whether to believe the forecasts or not... Of course, I guess I shouldn't complain about the current weather given some of the storms that January has thrown at us in the past!!

Plans for today include cleaning my disaster of a house. I've been focused more on things that I need to do for my daughter and Buddy than I have on my own, and it shows - boy, oh boy does it show! I just don't know where to start - other than pouring another cup of coffee to provide me with some energy  I really need to work on my pantries, but just keep moving things back and forth. I know I'm still a bit of an emotional mess over Buddy's passing and having to try to separate out things in his house that were mine - I kept a sleeping bag, pj's, extra clothes and scrubs at his house for bad weather or when I'd take care of him after his surgeries; and then there were the things he kept for the boys - videos, games, etc... One of the sister's texted to remind me to leave my key there the next time I went; that irritated me a little since he and I were the only two people who had a key to the house in the first place; and I had to go have keys made for them. When Buddy bought the house, he had taken one of my grandsons with him to get a new lockset and when he had the keys made, he let grandson pick them out - mine had ladybugs on it. I'll probably have the key shop file the teeth portion down so that it won't work and keep it as one of my memory things.

I did some Rural King shopping Friday - wild bird feed, suet, two kinds of cat and one kind of dog food - but they were totally out of sunflower seeds. I'll try the small feed store in our work town if I have to go to town tomorrow; or will ask Hubby to stop by when he gets off work Monday afternoon if the weather isn't horrible.

Whoops - here comes more freezing rain; guess I'd better hurry out to get the outside chores done before it sets in harder.

Take care all; have a good week!

So much done and so much to do. Nightshirt is almost done. I have to do the last stitching to bind the neckline and put a pocket on.

Then I need to make sausage and get the pork I don't use for that in the freezer. I have two recipes that I'm going to halve and test.

Then I will start on friend's apron. I wanted to finish the nightshirt first so I don't have to keep switching out needles.

Since bushes are blooming, we're going to get started on cutting down the "weed" trees. I want to get them down and stump killer in them before the forsythia blooms to the point of making it difficult to see and reach them.

And, if there's time after sausage making, I will start the seeds for early spring planting. I want to make good use of the whole planting season this year.

A bonus today. I've been having to drink 3 to 4 electrolyte drinks a day for about 4 months now, to help get rid of edema. The last few weeks that's been decreasing. Today is the first day that I made my morning one and the body didn't want most of it. (My taste buds reject electrolyte drinks if the body doesn't need it.) Hopefully that means that I'm finally getting over whatever triggered the problem. I still get swollen ankles/feet at the end of the day every once in a while but it goes away while sleeping.

But it also means that I really need to make some water flavorings so that I keep drinking enough water. Because I can't drink more than one bottle of plain water a day. So something to add to the list. I may just start making a small jug of "sweet" tea for me. One that uses monk fruit and stevia as the sweetener.

It's pouring rain here, today. Supposed to rain all the way thru Thursday. No snow for us. Local forecast was calling for snow on Thursday, but it has been changed to just a cold rain. I am so ready for Spring. I don't like to be closed up in the house all Winter.

Either Wednesday or Thursday will be my grocery shopping day. We have a book order that is supposed to arrive on Wednesday, and with all the rain, I don't want to leave them to possibly get wet. FedEx always leaves our packages on the inside of our gate if we're not at home. If FedEx deliverers them early enough, we'll still go shopping afterwards. If not, it'll be Thursday.

We have decided to stop doing our grocery shopping at Walmart. We'll still be making a stop there for other things, if need be, but not groceries. We pass the other big grocery store in town, so it won't be out of our way to shop at Food Giant, the other grocery store in small town. I like it better for groceries anyway. It's just going to mean more stops while in town.

I'm still slowly getting my energy back, but all the problems I've been experiencing from the Lupus/Sjogren's Syndrome flare up are now completely gone. Now, I get a 2 week break, and it's back for the start of more dental surgeries. Oh, JOY!

Kyrsyan, have you tried True Lemon, True Lime, True Orange, True Grapefruit for flavoring the water? I used tons of the True Lemon flavor packets during Chemo to kill the taste (Yes, you can 'taste' chemo when it's infusing), and got hooked on it. The chemo nurses suggested it instead of the lemonade which was all that I drank otherwise, since it had no sugar in it. I'm peering at the tiny writing on the back of one of the packets of True Lemon: 'Crystallized Lemon - Citric Acid, Lemon oil, Lemon juice. Non-GMO. No artificial preservatives. Gluten Free.'

The True Lime packet says 'Citric Acid, Evaporated Cane Juice (as a bulking agent), Lime oil, Lime juice, Ascorbic Acid'

They have a website www.truelemon.com I like to toss a pack in my water bottle when I'm working outside in the summer - the flavor helps to make me want to drink more. In cooler weather, I also like to bring up 4 cups of water to a boil in my small Corning Ware Teapot and drop in a packet of True Lemon for a hot, non caffinated drink. And if you have a light colored tea pot, using a packet of True Lemon will help with removing the tea stains inside.

I need a bit of sweet to balance. But I have some here so I can experiment. I don't need a lot of flavor, just a bit. So if those work it'd be good. My preferred flavors are dark berries though. Or mint.

Found at estate sale. Seal jars without dragging out the big vacuum sealer
View attachment 394135
I posted about these awhile back, someone here ordered one and it didn't work for her. I never have an issue to speak of, but if I do I make sure the jar attachment is down all the way and then it works perfectly. I like mine so well that I ordered one for a friend and another one for myself. I never have to use my food saver for jar sealing anymore.

Woke up early and just hit the day running. After a night of absolute cruddy sleep. I kept waking up at the edge of the bed, almost falling off. Movement during my sleep.

The nightgown worked very well. I only need to make one alteration, maybe two. The first is to reduce the sleeve by the size of the seam allowance. I somehow added that much extra in. Two would be looking at making a smaller knit binding. Not sure if I want to do that or not. I'm debating a bias tape maker, but I'm not sure how well that will work with knits.

Found some of the botanical tea bags that are meant for cold brew, in a flavor I like. So for now, those, in one of my filter drink containers with a single squirt of stevia or monk fruit are working for providing flavor to keep me drinking enough water.

The kitchen is nowhere near done its deep clean. I'm still paying a friend to come in after me. Because when you see it everyday, you miss things. She got the stove so clean that I'm making an active effort to keep it that way. I don't know why it makes that difference but it does. And she scrubbed things I normally forget. It will be well worth the money. And if I have enough, I may well pay her to help me with the other rooms.

The brain is back on track. It was getting skippy for a while there which was aggravating the frag out of me. I had lists of lists to stay on top of things. I'm still using lists but the brain is also remembering more. I think this is part of the brain's conflict over not working constantly anymore. Although I will be putting more hours in after lunch, for my second employer.

So much to do this week. I have beans going so that I can pack them and drop them in the freezer for the month. I actually ran out this month. I have another nightgown to go cut. Probably two. And friend's apron to start stitching on. And I need to go through the grocery carts that have built up over the month and weed things out. I'm going to start using a new bulk dealer that does deliveries to the city near me. They have some things I can no longer find in local stores, and at better prices. And unlike other bulk dealers, they don't ask for payment until you receive the items.

And ordering parts for the stove. One of the smaller eyes needs replacing. At this point, all 4 burners will now be heavy duty burners that lift up a bit more than regular ones and have a stronger support under them.

A step forward every day. Things that will keep us going forward if financials should change again.

I got up with a burst of energy this morning, so I thought to take this energy and turn it into something productive. I had bought new drip pans for my stove at Walmart. I wanted to clean my stove and put the new drip pans in. I got my stove sparkling clean and threw all the old drip pans into the garbage. I put all new pans under each element, except the last one. It wouldn't fit. I worked with it. Cary worked with it, and it was just too small for the element to fit back in correctly. I had to dig out the old one from the garbage, clean it up, and put it back in. Thing is, the new ones are black, and the old ones are silver. So, I'm making me out a LOWE's list for the next time we're in big town. All new drip pans for my model stove, all new stove elements, and extra kitchen sink stoppers. I will, then, have extras on hand in storage. I thought those pans at Walmart were universal, but apparently not. At least, I now have a clean stove.

More rain, today. I'm not complaining, though, after the horrible drought we had over the summer.

Cary ordered an AC/DC inverter for use on our vehicles. That gives us another generator as long as we have gasoline. Can't have too many backups for backups.

ps. I forgot to mention that I'm still finding some great simple recipes online for both egg noodles and rice. Two things I have plenty of. I love variety, and most of the ingredients for these new recipes I already have stocked in my pantry. Once, I get to the grocery store to get the remaining ingredients for some of them, I'll be working through the new recipes to see which ones we like and those we don't.

Sounds like y’all got up with lots of energy! I am playing in the greenhouse! Planted some yellow squash in big pots as an experiment to see if I can raise squash out of season. Potted some tomato seed also. About to make bread and dry the last tub of clothes. Rainy here but in the low 60’s. Hubs should finish up the lean-tos on the barn which means re organizing it all. I can’t wait! Will be so glad to get stuff up off the floor. Hubs salvaged a garage door which we will put on one end. Already wired and lights are up. Will also be my back up clothes line for rainy days!! Barns are a good thing! My break is over. Have a peaceful day everyone

I didn't like the one sausage recipe I got to try this weekend. So I went looking for a few others. Didn't have some of the spices so I went looking online. Wow. Spices have gotten expensive or disappeared. This is stuff I would normally consider basic but I just don't use very often so my plants are normally sufficient to our needs. Except it's the wrong time of year to harvest from the plants.

Guess I will be drying at least some of those from now on.

I really need to get over to Buddy's house to pick up his clothing that I need to donate, but the roads were slick yesterday; and snowy covered and slick today; I can't risk an accident. Hopefully, the roads will be clear tomorrow and the neighbor lady and I will go to the pool; I'll see if I can bribe her with lunch in Buddy's town so that I can get the clothes out of there. His sisters are wanting to have an auction ASAP; and I understand their desire completely, but not worth risking my safety, or a vehicle that I might not be able to replace.

An auction in weather where people can't come is not going to be good. They need to chill.

LOL, I think it's becoming my favorite past time to sit on the internet looking for recipes! Today, I've been searching for no-knead bread recipes. I am finding hundreds of them, but they all call for being baked in a Dutch oven. I don't have a Dutch oven (mine are enamel covered cast iron) that I can use in my oven, because of the plastic knob on the lid. So, I guess I'll be buying one with the metal knob just for making bread. All my regular cast iron Dutch ovens have the little legs on them.

So, does anyone have a suggestion as to what size I need to bake bread in? The recipes forget to mention that bit of info, or does it matter?

Kyrsyan, I don't know what type of auction they are planning as yet - one of those on line ones, or a regular one; or possibly one at at an auction barn - we do have those, where the auction house comes in an removes everything to their barn and sells it as part of their weekly auction. The house will need to go up for sale as well, but I don't know if that is a part of the auction or if they plan to use a realtor. I'm out of the loop now. I knew there would be some anger toward me as Health Care Power of Attorney when I made the decision - a decision that he chose for me to make - to stop treatment. I was told yesterday that when I got the clothes out I could leave my key on the table - that was a bit of a slap in the face as I was the only person who had a key besides Buddy until I made keys for his sisters after his passing. When he was moving in to his house, I started cleaning it while he took my grandson to the locksmith with him to get a copy of his key for my use, and let grandson pick it out - ladybugs. I'm just not ready to hand it over yet, so will make the copy to give to the sisters, then have the locksmith file mine smooth to disable it.

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
I mentioned I was thinking I had Strep last week. Well, I have NEVER hurt like this in the parts of my body hurting with whatever this is that I have!!!

I did not know you had lymph nodes near your elbows ...both in the back and the front!! I was hurting there and looked up where the lymph nodes were, and yup.....that is where I was hurting. It went away until just a few minutes ago...And it is back with a VENGEANCE!!! ALEVE must have worn off!!

Just took the next dose of Amoxicillin and some ibuprofen!! Don't know if it is hurting so bad because I am really THAT sick, or if something else is inflaming them......but DANG!!!

This has been a weird illness.....just blah, then get a charge of short lived energy and then back to not at ALL fun again!!

Sherree, I'd just use a regular cast iron skillet if you have one, or a Pyrex pie plate - use a piece of foil on top if it starts browning too fast.

I saw a few recipes that were made in cast iron skillets but didn't know how that would work for rye bread. The recipes made just plain white bread with a few spices added. They didn't rise much more than a pan of cornbread.

SouthernBreeze, unless you just want a new new dutch oven, get a replacement knob for what you have. I have baked no-knead in my enameled cast iron and it turned out great.

Where do you find replacement knobs? My enameled cast iron pots came from Walmart, and I've never seen replacement knobs for them. Most all the recipes that were made in Dutch ovens were the enameled ones. Out of the hundreds of recipes I looked at, very few were made in regular bread pans.

I'm not one to run to the doctor, but you might want to get this checked out.

So its a gloomy wet cooler day and not sunshine predicted until Friday. Its called winter weather. I'll miss it this summer when its sweltering hot.

Still organizing. I finally got the dimensions of the pantry room, its 12x20. Its amazing that we are seeing so much progress. Been working daily at it for a good month. I'm running low on wide mouth pint and quart jars, so I ordered a case of both.

I've got boxes of medicinal teas that have some age on them, I'm wondering if they would still be good. I'm going to put them in jars just in case. I don't dislike hot tea, I just don't think to drink any very often.

for our first meal today DH took some of the beef vegetable soup out of the freezer. He had run across a small can of corn and he added that to it. He ate what he wanted and I finished what he left. It would have been better if the corn had simmered for awhile but I ate it anyway. We had frozen Jack's pizza for supper or our second meal.

My left arm, from my fall last Thursday, is much better, hurts sometimes, but I'm able to use it.

We still have so much to do in the house to make it presentable. It does help to have to cabin to move things too. We will maintain some sleeping areas in the cabin just in case we need them. And the bathroom can be used except there is no shower, having a usable toilet and sink makes a big difference.

I still have some time and energy left to get a few more things done this even. Better get to it.

Yep, Judy is right. The knobs are pretty much interchangeable. I have a Crofton (Aldi) and a Cusinart and they are the same size knob for the 2 and 3 qt. Size.

My 7 qt. has a bigger screw, I think it is a T-Fal from Walmart. Can't match it to any of my Lodge, because my kids begged for them. May as well gift them while I am alive.

I don't normally say this, but please go see a Dr, the ER, or urgent care. This is not normal, and you most likely need something stronger than amoxicillan.

Since Sherree brought up bread making...My hubs gave me a sourdough kit from King Authur's for Christmas. For some reason is a sharp learning curve for me! I consider myself a "seasoned" baker...oh that is funny...but I can't get the hang of sourdough. The bread is heavy and not good to me. Anyone have any pointers? On a different note...I found these reusable shelf liners for the fridge that are dishwasher safe. You can just take them up and throw in the DW and have a clean fridge with minimal effort. I found them at a TJ Max of all places!

Um... it sounds like time to get to the doc and rule out tick borne disease, or fulminant (possibly heading to sepsis) strep. Please... you've got some sort of major infection going on. It could be viral, but you need to be sure.

I have used my regular Dutch ovens with legs in my propane oven. Just let the legs stick through the wire rack. It still works fine. I have used them on the burners on top too. So long as the legs go through the grate. It won't work on top of electric stove though.

I just bought some replacement lids at a yard sale years ago. The lady didn't have the pots to go with them, but she had an entire box of big lids. She thought hubs was going to tell me that I couldn't have them (wrong!) When he gave me the stink eye, I just tapped my finger on the all metal top, and he understood. I have used those lids for over 30 years and they were far from new when I got them.
I do really like that pot you posted though...

Thanks for letting me know that! I have 2 sizes of cast iron Dutch ovens with short legs. I also have 2 small cast iron pots with lids that look like bean pots without legs, but I think they are too small. I don't think they are but a 1 qt, maybe a 2 qt size.

I think I'll do my first try in the Dutch oven I already have, now that I know you can use those with legs in the oven. I hate to spend money on more pots when I'm only going to use it to make artisan breads. Cary wants to buy me a bread machine, but those seem too complicated, and I don't really have room for one. I've tried baking bread, before, but those that need the dough kneaded just don't work for me. I love that I have found the mother load of no-knead bread recipes!
