Feeling achy and have a headache. I think im getting what DH has. So grateful that I'm stocked up on soup, elderberry, and body armor drinks.

In an effort to rotate my food, I opened a can of chef Bordee Chicken Alfredo, a 3 oz can of chicken and a can of sweet potatoes (no heavy syrup but some cane sugar added). I added the can of chicken to the Chicken Alfredo with some pink salt and spike seasoning. I added butter to the sweet potatoes and mashed them. The sweet potatoes were great and the chicken alfredo was okay. These cans of food made more than I can eat in one sitting so I saved what was left for tomorrow. I eat one meal a day and a small snack. In a rotating effort I'll probably only eat the chicken alfredo once a month.

I've added these three cans to my grocery list, one out two in. Plus I've been eating a can of mandarin oranges (yum yum) and I'm down about 6 cans of that, so I'll replace with 12.

Sorry Moldy. We've been playing ring-a-round the rosey with that kind of crap since August. I finally spent a solid three days (and everyone of us worked to pull it off) cleaning all mattresses, pillows, bed linens, sofa cushions and pillows, and area rugs in the house. I mopped all the floors with liquid Lysol and wiped down every phone, computer, light switch, fan pull, door knob & frame, and wallet/purse in use.

My next action was going to be to nuke everything from space.

Thankfully, its just DH and I at home. I know its not flu (ive had enough experience with both strains to know), but probably something else viral. I'm taking elderberry, lemon balm, amd whatevwr other herb sounds good...maybe reishi and astragalus... Dh is taking Nyquil\Dayquil.

Picking up the pace on the preps. I've got a Walmart order ready to go that will replenish a portion of the food pantry and tomorrow I'll shop for cleaning supplies. I want to learn to make good flatbread and I'm going to start with pupusas (sp). They look easy and good. We're close to selling our other property hopefully, it will sell very quickly and we can pay off all of our debt.

Judy, what brand of sweet potatoes did you buy?
TIA!

Pickwell Farms from SavALot, less than a 1.00 a can. They tasted great, expecially with added butter.

Judy

We don't have SavALot here, but I think there's one in the town my Dad lives in. I added the Pickwell Farms to my Walmart list to see if they might have it. I used to buy Martin's brand, but they just have too much added sugar, and had gotten to where I thought they didn't taste good. I can store whole Irish potatoes ok, but for some reason sweet potatoes go bad almost immediately for me.

I finished up last week's prep buys on my way home from and back in to work yesterday, hitting the Dollar General in my home town and work town twice each - it was tp time

I had 4 - $5 off $25 purchase Dollar General register coupons. They had Northern tp 8 mega roll packs for $8 each, but they rang up $7.95. Each stop, I picked up 3 packs (total: $23.85) plus something to add to the stockpile to put it over the $25 purchase amount required - I used an assortment of 2 bottles of peroxide, a bottle of rubbing alcohol, a bottle of mouthwash etc... all in the $1.30-$1.65 range, so each total after coupon and tax was in the $22 dollar range. Then I hit the grocery store to take advantage of an in-store coupon deal - Cottonelle tp 6 mega roll packs for $4.99. I bought the limit of 3 and used 3 manufacturer's coupons for 50 cents each along with the store coupon, so got out of the store for $15 for that. I'm calling it a two-fer deal 'cause it will make some nice insulation for that north wall in the pantry

I also picked up 3 bricks of .22's that the deal finder for our MAG came up with; not sure how long they will last the boys though

So far, the only things I've noted in the drug-store ads are Boost, Ensure & Pure Protien in the food column, and laundry detergent for the household stuff. There are some good coupons and deals on the Boost and Ensure this week, so I will probably take advantage of them. Daughter's partner is not doing well (end stage cancer) and has mostly stopped eating actual food. I'm a little concerned about the high protein drinks that he prefers as his other fluid intake is low as well, but his kidneys appear to be working okay for now, so I will probably purchase several cartons of each.

I will be pulling some chicken and corned beef briskets from the freezer and getting it thawed and canned sometime this week and next; just not sure where I'm going to fit it in. I'm wanting to shut down one of the freezers so I can clean it up and move it; then will transfer the lot to that freezer and clean up the other one. Canned corned beef is fabulous for making corned beef hash; I can make a large skillet full using a pint of corned beef, a box of Hungry Jack dehydrated hash browns, dried onions, and some shredded carrots. Heat that up to sizzling using the fat from the top of the jar of corned beef to brown it up a bit, make a few openings in the hash to drop in some eggs then cover the pan til they are set - YUM!

Dang, now I'm hungry  Reckon I'd better have a bowl of the bread pudding (that I made from some stale cinnamon rolls daughter was getting ready to throw away), then get ready to head in to work.

You folks all take care out there; stay safe!

I'm pretty sure Pickwell Farms is a Sav A Lot brand, I don't usually like the canned sweet potatoes with a heavy syrup, but these taste pretty much like mashed sweet potatoes, although they don't come mashed. Good luck finding them.

I made some small-batch, just-add-water brownie mixes and some dry onion soup mixes. Still working on putting the house back together after the girls left for college yesterday.

Hi school marm. Do you have a recipe for the onion soup mixes? I have tried some of the online recipes and found them bland. I can buy brownie mixes for about $1 a box but the onion soup mix I need.

The recipe below is the one I use. One daughter said it was a little bland, another said it was a little strong (I swear I mixed it very well!), my husband said it needed to set longer for the flavors to develop. But everyone ate it.

I compared my recipe to the ingredient list for Lipton's onion soup mix. They have sugar and soy sauce, plus several additives that I suspect are the flavor enhancers that make us want to eat more than we should. I'm going to try adding a little sugar and dehydrated soy sauce (DIY) to this recipe to see if I can get it a little closer to what the family wants.

Onion Soup Mix
1/4 cup dehydrated minced onion
2 tablespoon beef bouillon granules
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon parsley
1/8 teaspoon celery seed
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon paprika

Combine all ingredients well. Substitutes for one package of onion soup mix.

It's January, so.... time to plan gardens, inventory seeds and starting supplies, mend clothing, organize areas that I can get to (sigh - the neverending job around here). A local grocery and safeway have a few good deals this week, so I'll hit there this weekend (some of the deals are weekend only).

I need more Lysol and bleach tabs after this last week.

I always, always put food that comes in boxes or bags from the grocery store into my freezer for a few weeks to kill off any larvae that may be contained in them. I've never had a problem, until last night! I made the mistake of not putting one box of Bisquick in the freezer. I just brought it home, and set in on a shelf. Stupid me, I meant to put it in the freezer, but messed around and forgot to do it. Went to make pancakes for supper last night, and low and behold, it had weevils in it!!!! Good thing I had another box that was in the freezer! Supper was saved!

I haven't gotten much prepping done this week - daughter's partner was failing badly and ended up in the hospital; we brought him home with Hospice Tuesday (prayers appreciated), so other than a dash through Wal-Mart where I whipped through the boys department to check for clearance priced coats, and other clothing (no good prices yet) on my way to pick some items for daughter, no prepping has been done.

There's really not much out there in the ads other than diet and health stuff - I'll probably stop on my way to and from work to do a couple of Ensure and Boost deals, maybe pick up some on sale All laundry detergent (Walgreen's actually has a good stock of the unscented stuff). Otherwise I'm holding on to my cash for good deals in the boys' department.

I'm not buying much, either in store or on line. Don't really need much except to replace the cans of mardarin oranges I've eaten recently, as they are my favorite.

The wire cubes that I ordered for my new closet are up and I've finally dragged all the clothes of mine that were in my office to the closet and have most of them either hung up or stacked in the cubes. I'm really an organized person trying to get out and with the new closet I'm seeing a little light at the end of the tunnel. On tap in the closet is to organize my clothes by sizes, which may take a little while. After I lost my sewing machine in katrina I bought a very small one and its on a table in the closet, I've never used it. Not that I'm actually going to sew, I could mend a few things. I can now find my sewing box, which has been hidden most of the time.

My treadmill is in my office and its actually uneatherd. Unfortunately my step meter does not record steps on the treadmill or even in the grocery store because my arm is still, but at least time time can be calculated.

Unfortunately I'll never have enough shelf space for all of my books. Years ago my ex promised me that when I die he would make sure my books went to like minded people, who knows if he really meant that. My new, precious, DH (six years now) probably looks at them as fire starters, but whatever, he so good in so many ways I have decided to overlook his short comings (we all have them) and just truly appreciate the good life we have together.

Since I had the bug attack, I've been carefully going through my pantry and kitchen shelves to make sure I don't have an infestation. So far, so good. I have too much invested in my food storage to let something like this get out of control.

Still not buying anything for storage for awhile. Just replacing what I use on a two week basis.

Maybe I can managed to post on the right thread this week...
I hate going to Aldi on Fri because they are usually out of a lot of things. They didn't have a single can of dark roast coffee. Very little of the medium roast. The chocolate and the trail mix aisle were almost cleaned out. I'm working Judy's 52 can challenge and I was able to get the canned goods I wanted.
Refilled all the kerosene cans. Refilled the dogs arthritis medicine. Bought 2 more big packs of Hot Hands and they should hopefully last me thru the winter.
Trying to remember to keep the car filled with gas.

My brother suggested we rotate our stored gas through our vehicles. We started doing that a couple of months ago and it seems to be working out fine. When we go to the VA we put the empties in the back of the truck and fill them and usually don't have to put all that much gas in one or the other vehicles.

My generic smart watch periodically buzzes and tells me to take activitity. Not everytime but a few times a day I've started getting on my treadmill for a couple of minutes to get a few more steps in, seems to give me a little energy that I desperately need. I've gone back to intermittent fasting and am doing mostly 20 hours with one meal and a small snack. I'd like to drop the 20 pounds I put on last year but (boo hoo) if I don't at least I will know I'm doing good for my body. Last night I looked at an open package of cookies of DH's sitting on a table next to his recliner that I sit in when he goes to bed, and kind of felt sorry for myself. I was not hungry but I wanted to eat, I managed to not eat any. I was down a pound this morning.

I purged a big pile of paper work this morning, felt good to put a big stack in the burn barrel.

I would appreciate it if someone could start this thread on Sunday.

We lost daughter's partner on Thursday. He was a good man - smart, worked hard, kind but strict to dogs and kids, generous with his time, energy, and money to those deserving of it; a man of many talents as well. Prayers for daughter and the three boys would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I'm so sorry, Renee. I hope it's some comfort that he's no longer suffering. I know, even kniw I g that he's only gone on ahead, and that you all WILL meet again, is scant comfort in the face of the overwhelming hole in your hearts and lives.

May God be very close to your family in the coming days, and may He especially comfort and console the children, whose lives have changed so drastically. Above all, may He provide absolute certain ty that this wasn't "goodbye", but only "until we're together again in "Eternity".

I'm sorry for your family's loss Renee.

I haven't done much prepping since November--a cruise and then knee replacement surgery have kept me away from shopping. Today I finally did a couple of errands and got a few things. At Home Depot I used a gift card from Christmas and got a set of 3 heavy duty work gloves. We have plenty of the thin kind, but are kind of low on the heavy ones. This will help.

Then I went to Save A Lot. They have really spiffed up the store and it looks great. I bought 8 cans of cream of chicken soup (44 cents each), 8 cans of sausage gravy (1,19 each), and 4 cans of petite diced tomatoes (49 cents each). I was pleased about the gravy as it is really hard to find around here.

Renee, sorry about the loss in your family. .

Hubby got his other eye done. It went well. He said it already feels better than the first one. The first is doing good, but is still sore sat times.

I got my blood work. I no longer need the prescription potassium. My TSH was up to 5.38. But I wonder if it could be caused by the overdose of potassium. I restarted my Armour Thyroid, the lowest dosage made. After five days, I felt bad. I wanted to nap a lot, my legs hurt worse, I was nauseous, and my blood pressure dropped to 95/68, but my resting pulse was 110. Yesterday, I only took half a pill. Today, I did not take any, and I feel much better. Pressure and pulse normal today. That just leaves me on blood pressure medication and my supplements. Almost 5 years addressing my gut health. Best decision I ever made.

Not doing any preps except decluttering and working on taxes.

So sorry, Renee for the one lost.

The only prepping we'll be doing for awhile is cutting, splitting, and stacking more firewood. The storms that hit us this morning brought down a huge tree in our yard! What a mess! It came within inches of hitting our house.

Many prayers for your family, Renee. I will start next week's thread at noon if you haven't, if you'd like.

Digger, could you please give a cliff notes version of how you have healed your gut? so important, but so overlooked. We have many hormones that are produced in our GALT (gut-associated lymphatic tissue) that greatly affect our lives, yet it barely seems to register in information we receive on a regular basis (media, physicians, etc).

Moldy,
I have been using Plexus supplements. I started with their Triplex combo, which is the Slim drink, Probio5, and BioCleanse. I later added Vitalbiome, another probiotic, and XFactor Plus, a multivitamin. I felt like a new person within a week of starting the Triplex. But it has taken all this time to slowly get my health back. I know people who have quit because they say it cost too much. But to me, being sick was much more expensive in the long run and I was missing out on life. An overgrowth of yeast in our gut wrecks havoc on our health. Rebalancing our gut flora allows your body to heal itself. I get my products wholesale to make them more affordable. I also sell a small amount, less than $100 a month, but I don't try to sell much. People scoff and say it can't possibly work and it cost too much. I just keep taking my supplements and keep getting better. They still complain about the same old symptoms.

Many prayers for your family, Renee. I will start next week's thread at noon if you haven't, if you'd like.

Thank you for your recipe. I have all I need to make it. I can make onion soup from scratch but it will make too much for us to eat and I find the onions have an "off" flavor when I freeze it. Canning makes some of the spices too strong. This would be great to stuff in my BOB.
