Good morning! I, too, am waiting on that coffee pot but thought I would post before the work starts here! Sad news is that the crows have found our blue corn that we planted a few days ago. We will have to address that today, which probably means replanting a lot of it. Good news is that cantaloupes are doing well! I counted at least 10 melons yesterday and that was from a distance! Summer kitchen is already going this morning but you know that story! Can till you can’t. I try to have hot water bath and pressure canner going at the same time but that can be a challenge!
A beautiful morning here! Hope you all have the same.

Thank you for the wishes for a beautiful morning, Philkar. It is a lovely cool morning here - currently 59*f, with the high predicted to be 79* - that type of weather suits me just fine. There is a heavy dew on, good for the plants and no watering needed from me except for the porch plants. With the cool temps and cloud cover the moisture won't come out of the ground as fast, so I may not be tilling until tomorrow or possibly even Tuesday - with more rain in the forecast for Wednesday, I need to get it done. I still need to pick up more corn seed - don't know why it's taking me so long to get around to picking up the seed to replant, but I have an excuse for today as the small, family owned feed 'n seed isn't open on Sunday. I'll pin a note to Hubby's lunch box tomorrow morning to ask him to stop by there on his way home from work.

The tomato plants are doing well - I've been picking yellow cherry tomatoes frequently, but the red ones are lagging behind. I bought a cucumber from the nearby veggie patch and chunked it, then added cut in half cherry tomatoes and some Italian dressing and let it marinate for a couple of days - so good!

Plans for this week include:
Till both gardens
Plant corn and some late season veggies
Go through the grandsons out grown clothing from my house to donate
Organize and label shelves in the main floor pantry
Measure the large shelf sets in the basement for sturdier shelves - the ones that came with the shelf sets are bowing
Check both freezers to make room for sweet corn

That ought to keep me busy enough

Take care all - wishing you all a good week!

I'm moving my dehydrator to a different spot in the kitchen. The new spot was piled up with plastic ware. I have a cabinet that I have kept the plastic ware in but it had boxes in front of the shelves and I could not get to them, so I've removed the boxes and got all the plastic ware put away. It looks nice now. The last time I dehydrated anything was green onion tops, I had so many that I just left them in the dehydrator and now they are toast, gotta clean all that out before I move it.

The new dehydrator spot is on a butcher block table, the shelves underneath need cleaning out too. I'm wobbling all over the place but forcing myself to get things done. As long as I'm careful I'm okay, just have to rest some.

We are both feeling blah this morning, I think DH got overheated this week, so we aren't going to church this morning.

I've already had my adventure, today! I have to get out in the gardens early, before the sun gets too hot. I'm very, very photosensitive, so early works for me. So, as usual, I was out at the gardens, and I'd just bent over to check the cucumbers. All of a sudden, something rattled at me!!!! SNAKE! I started screaming, running into the house for Cary. By the time he got back out there, it was gone. He hunted in every raised bed and all around, but no snake. Now, I have to worry about a rattler along with Roger! After Cary reassured me it was gone, I gathered all the veggies.

It rained off and on all day, yesterday. We had two storms move over us, and one of those was warned as severe. More severe storms possible, today. Today's temps are more to my liking. High of 84 with heat index of only 95.

Oh, and thanks a bunch, Renee, for the meatloaf recipe! I'll have to try that one, too.

I'm making the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, country gravy, and green beans, tonight. Included will be a platter of peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers all sliced up and a Kaiser roll for Cary slathered in butter and poppy seeds and toasted. He likes his rolls to be hard and crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Toasted Kaiser rolls are just right.

No home fellowship, today. It's our off week. No plans at all for today.

We've gotten rain 5 days in a row so everything is soaked. But we have enjoyed eating our own veggies very much.
We got the new fridge last Thursday and I love it. Way easier to organize.

Dh has started a small hydroponics system, if it works he will build a bigger one this fall. He loves to dabble and is very good with his hands. He fixes everything around the house.
Got laundry going and need to clean the kitchen.
Prayers for those who need them. Which is probably all of us!

O MY GOODNESS! How scary! I do not like snakes at all! I tolerate black snacks, but anything venomous can't stay!

I have our cucumbers growing in a 40ft. raised bed. The vines have taken over the whole bed, and you can't see the dirt without moving the vines around. It was under all those vines! Me screaming so loud must have scared even him (a rattlesnake) off. Thank God, I got the warning, instead of being bitten! We've had so much rain for so long even the snakes are looking for higher ground.

I'm still cleaning out dusty and cluttered areas in the kitchen. Unfortunately I can only do a little at a time, completely wears me out, I rest, I work. The resting is longer than the working. I'm trying to get to the point of canning. I'm really feeling that I must start canning things in my freezers. Please pray for me about this. I'm going to go back and reread all the posts about canning in an electric canner, that SB has done,

I've been making and canning jam with all our berries, and I'm thankful for that!

I'll be working on more fencing this week. It's not my favorite thing to do, but it has to be done.

I may do a fun project in our small pantry that is visible in our kitchen. I'm thinking of painting the shelves and walls white, and putting some farmhouse style signs up in it. I'll put some canned goods in there, but I plan on storing my appliances and big glass jars I use for my various flours, sugars, oats, coffee, and tea. I might even paint our island and bar stools. I already have everything I need to complete the projects, so it won't cost anything.

Judy, just follow the canning instructions and recipes in the canning book that came with your pressure canner. It's what I do, and it's so easy. I enjoy canning with it. I do it all in stages. I wash the jars, rings, and lids one day. I cook out the meat the next day and put it in the fridge. Next day, sterilize jars, rings, and lids, and I can it all up. I let the finished jars sit on the countertop, until the next morning, undisturbed. Then label and date.

Oh, I love to decorate! Sounds like a great plan to me! My small kitchen pantry consists of floor to ceiling shelves along one wall. 5 shelves, each about 36 inches long. I love open shelves. I decorated each shelf with that white plastic lace shelf edging. It wasn't much, but it made it look so nice. This is my "working from" pantry. Everything else is in the big pantry room.

Brain is starting to come fully back online. I realized/remembered today that if I'm getting hit with barometric headaches, then I need to be drinking more. And when I honestly thought about it, I realized I haven't been drinking anywhere near enough.

I finally got the pork roast in the crockpot. Every time I've planned it for the last couple of days, I didn't remember until it was too late to have it ready for dinner. And I really didn't want to cook it in the oven.

The vegetables to fo with it will be oven roasted rutabaga, jicama, turnip, and zucchini sticks. I'm planning on cutting them and marinating them in a few minutes.

Since my cast iron ovenware pieces have been having problems keeping a good coating, I'm changing things up. They will now get a light coat of avocado oil before use, and then another after they are cleaned.

I have hearthstone in the oven, so it maintains the oven temp for quite a while after I turn off the power. So each time, I will just put another piece or two, with a light thin coat. Over time that should become a good solid base coat.

I'm going to order more hooks. The ovenware pieces will be hung in spots close to the stove. Storing them in the stove is not good. It ends up destroying the seasoning coat. And the warming bin has had occasional mouse visits over the years. I don't want to have to completely strip and reseason them all if it happens again. Especially with how difficult it is to get them seasoned correctly in the first place.

And after looking at stovetop shelves, and brainstorming with Dad, the final decision is to cut a piece of 1/2" hardbacker to fit the space and proved the solid base. Then get one of the silicone shelves to hold everything and keep most of the mess off the hardibacker shelf. As well as to provide edges to keep things from falling off.

I may also just go ahead and buy a can of high temp paint in white and give the hardibacker a layer of that as well. The stove is white. The white paint would help it "blend". Bonus on the hardibacker is that a hole can be cut in it for the light switch. In case I ever actually decide to use it.

Depending on how much space the cast iron takes, I may add one or two small basket shelves to hold different oils and vinegars that I use frequently.

It sounds a lot like mine! Our small pantry is about 10 ft tall with open shelves on two walls.

I love to decorate too! Pintrest and Instagram are great for ideas, and so is Pottery Barn. I can usually find a cheap way to copy their ideas. I prefer to decorate in farmhouse/rustic style for our home.

Inside and outside, our house looks like a cross between an old country cottage and a rustic cabin! Work all done by Cary and myself. Outside the house has western cedar board and batten stained with honey cedar stain. It has gingerbread trim all over it in a pale yellow color. Inside, the floors, walls, and ceilings are all also natural wood pine tongue and groove. No stain or paint. I do have ceramic tile on some of the floors that match the color of the inside. Cary has hand made about 95% of our furniture to make it look rustic. He loves woodworking in his workshop. We would go into a store, and I would see furniture that I liked, and he would buy all the materials and make it himself. He's really good at it, too. I love the old and rustic style.

Thought you might enjoy this tidbit. My 83 yr old aunt who is post stroke with a healthy dose of dementia has been helping me can! She becomes very clear minded when preserving food except when I pressure can items. Apparently her mom only hot water bathed everything and pressure canning is foreign to her.
I struggle a bit keeping me on track and answering all her questions!
On a different note…all the decorating sounds like fun! My aunt who LOVES purple might be a great help to you JD! She also loves leopard print so it would be an exciting pantry. SB you need to pack heat girl! Rattlesnakes are nothing to play with!! Me I am shooting crows that pulled up my blue corn.

We got some heavy rain and thunder last night, and more is predicted tonight and in the morning, we'll see.

I have a chronic cough. Years ago China Connection recommended some chinese tablets called Cydiodine Buccal Tablets and they were sold on ebay. I just about bought them by the truck load because they worked. Then they were no longer sold on ebay and I kind a forgot about them. I just ran across a package that had been in my van for the longest time. I opened the box and there was three packages. I was starting to feel like I was going to start coughing so I melted one in mouth. It worked, its doesn't last forever but it stopped the cough feeling. Now if I could just find the stuff that kept my nose unplugged without taking sinus allergy medication, which I'm thinking may be adding to my dizziness. I can the that from walmart but its gotten very expensive, now to remember the name of it. It'll come to me afterwhile.

Still working in the kitchen, little by little.

My husband built shelves above the washer/ dryer in our utility room and that is the working pantry. I am tall and can reach most of shelves without stepstool.
I have always stored dry goods in glass jars. I am finding that as I've aged and gotten arthritis in my hands that I can no longer easily handle gallon jars of rice or beans. Pasta is Ok. So I am switching over to half gallon jars.
A few years I decluttered the kitchen cabinets and got rid of things I no longer used. Put a bunch of small gadgets in basket on bottom shelf. Easy to pull out and not used frequently. To get to back of bottom cabinet is no longer as easy task. I use glass containers for leftovers etc and moved them to upper cabinet for easier access.
Seems everything is heavier these days with my arthritis. But I banished plastic from my kitchen long long ago.

At church this morning during coffee time, several were complaining about the weeds in front of the empty hoarder house next to me. When I came home, I took a closer look and found a cocklebur taller than me! So, I came in changed clothes, grabbed my equipment and started on the mess. I had to cut the cocklebur down piece by piece and put it all in a bushel basket so I can make sure none of the seeds get spread. The rest was thistles and catnip. Both were shoulder high. I piled all of the stuff I cut or pulled on the cement next to the front steps. I cut one tree and need to go back with my ratcheting loppers to cut it and the cocklebur closer to the ground. It took me about 1½ hours, and I got overheated even though it was mostly in the shade. I'm sure the catnip will come back because I cut it. The clumps are too large and deeply rooted for me to pull. BTW that one cocklebur filled the entire basket. This is one flower bed in front of her house. I pulled a few thistles on the side of the house closest to me but left everything else. I'm not going to do the sides or back.

I would have preferred to be pulling purslane from my garden, but felt I needed to do the neighbor's mess. I must say it looks a WHOLE LOT BETTER! The bed has some lovely daylilies but only one is blooming. There is a good-sized clump of another flowering plant, but I don't know what it is. If I'm able, I'm going to try to keep ahead of the mess and not let it get so bad again.

I did pull most of my onions and have them laid out in the garage to cure. Several of the yellow onions were rotted but all the white look good. I've found over the years that the white onions keep better than the yellow for some reason.

This week has more "needs to be done" than I know I'll have the energy to do. I keep putting off going to town, but I really need to do so. I need to order shoes because I definitely consider them a majorly important prep. Also, I need to do regular shopping plus I have a good-sized list of prep food items I want to add. Wednesday is supposed to be stormy so I think I will work on the purslane issue Monday and Tuesday and maybe get fence around the sweet potatoes. I plan to clean on Wednesday and to town on Thursday. I hate going to town because the whole town is one big mess of detours. I swear their planning department sits down and figures out how best to inconvenience everyone as the plan priority. There are two main throughfares to get to shopping area. One has been closed since early spring and detoured to the other main street which is now down to two lanes. Only good thing is the newspaper publishes "closing" each Monday.

So much rain! We got deluges off and on all day, yesterday, especially last night. I went to the gardens (strapped this time) and everything is standing in water. The big garden has water standing in between the rows and has nowhere to go. It doesn't bode well at all for the gardens. Rain is supposed to be ending, today and tomorrow, then rain coming back in. We haven't seen a dry patch of ground in at least a month.

I was going to do laundry today and hang them outside, but it's really dark out like is going to rain, again. I'll wait til tomorrow to do it, instead. I don't really feel up to doing it today, anyway. I'm not feeling well.

Cary is in big town getting replacement parts for the lawn tractor. He likes to have plenty of parts in reserve for it and our big tiller. Never know when you might need them and not be able to get them. I didn't feel up to going with him. No telling what all he'll come home with!

The meatloaf I made last night in my new pan turned out good, but not great. I much prefer a denser, firmer loaf than what this recipe made, but at least it didn't fall apart. I think I'll cut back on the amount of water next time. 3/4 cup of water for 2 lbs of ground beef seemed a bit much when I was mixing it all up. It was almost too soupy to shape into a loaf. We only ate half the loaf, so we'll be having the rest tonight with garlic roasted potatoes, purple hull peas, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, and rolls.

I'm reworking my grocery list to only include a few things that I'm almost out of, things that I can do without, but like to eat. So instead of $100 plus I've got it down to $25. I'm trying to build my cash back up to where it was before we bought the last generator. I wanted to replace a few things I'd uses out of my pantry but I am going to force myself to spend less, its going to be painful (LOL) but I really must do it. Not really an emergency but I feel that I should do it. I love to grocery shop.

I love to grocery shop, too, and I love to cook. If I could cut our grocery bill down even more, it would really go a long way in helping to build back our savings from buying the SUV. Our grocery bill each month is our largest expense.

We are having company in about an hour. Two of my cousins (brothers) they are from the Memphis area, one lives in Texas now. We rushed around and got the front room (sand/mud room) in really good shape. I had to rest a lot or I would have fallen over, DH is different if he stops then thats it. He can push himself more than I can. I had a new table cloth for the table that looks nice (I had it on hand just in case)(I need to order another one for just in case).

Now if I can just keep that room looking good. Its a combination room, one one end is DH's desk, along with bookcases. In the middle is a round table to eat on, and on the other end is the wood stove and in the other corner away from the heat is a medium size fridge and I have my dehydrator next to the fridg, but its going in the kitchen, soon, I hope.

These fellows are my second cousins and are the salt of the earth, so to speak. Their dad was my maternal grandmother's brother. We all spent time growing up here, their grandparents were my great grandparents. We all have fond memories of spending time here. And now i'm blessed to live here, going on 13 years.

We had some rain off and on today, I think its gone for now, the sun is shinning, but that could go away in a split second.

We were offered apricots :) dh and I or just him if I am not feeling well will go Wed. to pick them. He doesn't like fresh ones (I do) but he likes the jam.
The garden is growing and the idiot prairie dogs are taking their share. We are doing all e can to get rid of the lousy creatures.
We are in our dry time so the garden has to be watered by hand every other day. We had 13% humidity yesterday.
We're already cutting wood for winter and had to have one of the 90 yr old maples cut down. So that will be used next winter.

I finished the major portion of purslane removal this morning. Two large garbage bags are now cooking in the sun. Obviously, there are still a couple million baby purslane and likely additional large ones I missed hiding away, but I'm satisfied I got the majority out before they could go to seed.

I love new potatoes so may dig a couple hills where the vines have died back to see what's there. It's always like a treasure hunt! I should have some summer squash by the end of the week. No zucchini as seeds did not germinate, but I like summer squash just as much.

Something is biting off plants. Not eating them just biting off portions and leaving them on the ground. What would do that? Squirrels? Also, something has dug up some potatoes and left them laying in the row with teeth marks on them.

Rain was forecast for this evening along with thunderstorms, but we did not get anything. I'm debating between trying to put up fence around the sweet potatoes or going to town tomorrow. Guess I'll sleep on it and decide when I get up.

I have a drawer full of recipes I've clipped over the years and started sorting through them this evening. I've already thrown away a bunch, found a couple I want to try and made another pile to pass along to a friend. I really want to weed out so any recipe that I know I won't use is gone. Any recipe that has ingredients I can no longer eat -- gone. A recipe with expensive ingredients never in my pantry -- gone. After the first go through, I'll go back through them again and either sort into categories to keep or discard. I have dozens of cookbooks, so I really don't need all of the these. After I finish this little project, I might think about downsizing my cookbooks.

I also managed to do two loads of laundry including sheets and remaking the bed. My hands were hurting so much after making the bed and doing all the weeding, that I've not accomplished much else.

Another beautiful 60 degree morning here; temps will be in the high 80's by afternoon so as soon as the heavy dew we got last night dries off, I will be out in the back garden replanting the sweet corn that didn't germinate - Hubby stopped and picked up another pound of sweet corn seed for me on his way home from work last evening.

Welp - daughter just sent me a text; we're booked in to another parade so I'm off to Rural King for more popsicles...

I wore my usual outdoor flip flops to the gardens this morning. I went down to the big garden, Still soupy muddy, but there was a nice squash that needed to be picked. I knew better than to try it in the flip flops, so I pulled them off and away I went, LOL. I was determined to get that squash! I got half way to the plants, and sunk to my ankles. I almost fell trying to pick my feet up. I didn't know it, but Cary was watching the whole thing. He died laughing at me, wanting to know if I needed rescuing. He said that he would throw me a line if I wanted him to. Silly man :smashblue:! I made it back out with squash in hand! Took the water hose to my feet and ask him if he wanted to wash between my toes........He said, NO.

No rain today, so I'm doing a big load of laundry to hang out. 90 for high and 101 heat index for today.

We're having BLT's tonight, so I'm going to be cooking out 1 1/2 lbs of bacon for those. I'll put what we don't eat back in the freezer for use for other meals. That way, it's already cooked, and it's a grab and use thing when needed.

There have been some things I've been watching for, for the house. And it's Prime Day. So I managed to get the range hood, and stove top shelf. And cup hooks. And a small pile of other things I've been looking at. I debated extra cupboards for the bathroom, but I'm temporarily holding off on that. Mainly because they are press board and I don't see them holding up well or long term.

Two solid 8+ hour nights of sleep have helped a lot. I am actively resisting the urge to stay up late and it is helping.
