Good morning! We too are in the squash overproduction phase! Pick 5 gallons of crookneck squash off of 4 plants. The area of the garden they are planted in got a good compost application last year and again this past January. Has paid off. I am ready to pull sugar snaps and English peas. They are producing like crazy. Picking and giving away! This week’s chore are reorganizing outdoor kitchen and laundry room. Planting wise we are planting some blue corn in another field away from Hastings corn, watermelons and sorghum. We,as many of you, are having a wet spring and are working at weird times to get everything in the ground. Placed uncle on hospice last week which is really helping all of us. The people that are helping to care for him from Hospice are the best. No drugs and he can stay right here with family.

Well, there are two tractors running, one getting a new belt put on, and a mower going - not sure what is going to be planted where, but just so grateful I have family who will step in and help take care of the place. They have exclusive hunting rights to our ground, so this is there thank you to us. They are going to move my wagon of compost from the sale barn to the back garden so I can unload it there.

Today will be a lazy day for us. No home fellowship today. Part of our group have gone on vacation. We have nothing planned.

I have baby bell peppers the size of golf balls already, and baby cherry tomatoes. The banana peppers are setting blooms, and the first cukes I planted are about ready to start running. Squash is doing well, too, but no blooms, yet. I haven't seen any baby tomatoes on any of the other plants, but they are absolutely loaded with blooms. Cary's watermelon and tomato plants are doing very well, too. I hope to be able to can lots of tomatoes, squash, and green beans this season, refill my freezer with chopped bell peppers, and make several jars of pickled banana pepper rings. I may even try to make and can my own salsa, too. I'll have to find a good recipe, first.

Nothing really planned for this coming week, except to take Mom to her ENT doctor, Tuesday. While in Big town with her, Cary needs to stop in at Lowe's for a few items, and Mom wants to do some shopping at different places, too.

Everything else that we can do this coming week will depend on whether we get more rain or not.

Gee Renee you are and at it early this morning. I just got up a few minutes ago and I'm dragging until I get fully awake, drinking room temperature coffee, its better than nothing and I can never bring myself to pour day old coffee down the drain.

God Speed and have a happy and blessed Sunday. Today is homecoming at our church, so the singing starts early.

This coming week is commodity week, tomorrow we go to town to pick up.

I only have a 4 cup pot, but my 'extra' coffee goes in a pint mason jar with all the usual additives; then is popped in the fridge as soon as it cools down enough. If it's chilly in the house I nuke it to heat it up; if it's hot I might grab the grandson's can of whipped cream and make me a foo-foo cold coffee drink - sometimes I even drizzle a little Hershey's syrup on the whipped cream and pretend I'm being real fancy

I've got all but one section of the back garden tilled - had Hubby pull my trailer of compost up to that stretch and will be raking the compost out into that section before I till it - it was a little rough yesterday when I worked it so it could use a little help.

Your comment reminded me of the time years ago when we first moved here. The whole back yard was a garden. It was huge. Our neighbor down the road had a goat farm. He would bring trailer loads of goat manure and we would rake it out and spread it all over our garden. He would bring up his tractor and turn it all under for us. Those were the best gardening years we've ever had. Then, we went crazy and turned the back yard into an inground swimming pool. We now have our back yard back, but no goat manure.

I am sore but happy. Almost all the tomatoes are in the ground. I have 6 more to go. Back hates me but cool weather let me get a lot done this morning.

Just got back in from reconnected all the pool hoses. And replacing missing parts. And adding in the inline chlorinator. Fingers crossed that I got everything tight enough and that filter works.

Then that leaves getting the sunscreen back up. And ordering the privacy/windscreen for that section of fence. Along with peppers, cucs and squash to get planted.

There are days, especially when our heat index hits 115+ degrees, that I miss having our pool. We eventually had ours dug up and had dump truck loads of topsoil brought it to fill it all in. That area is where all our raised bed gardens are today.

I can't. It's above ground. Last year I did sprinklers for son. That was more expensive than the chlorine for his pool would have been. So at end of season we got a big bucket of chlorine, barely discounted.

Son uses it to self regulate his sensory issues. Without it, he spends hours in the shower or sprinkler.

I got very lucky in finding new poles to replace the ones that the salt water chlorinator destroyed. According to the pool folks, the fact that the poles made it two seasons with salt water was a miracle. But I almost had to buy a whole new pool.

But I'm two months behind in getting it going. I normally have it up and running in March. Right now I'm hoping to have it running by the end of the week. Well, clean by the end of the week. I should be able to kick the filter on tomorrow morning.

Have any of you gals ever used boxes of jello pudding/pie mix (follow the instructions for making a pie) and a graham cracker crust to make quick and easy pies? I made one using 2 small boxes of the coconut pudding/pie mix, sprinkled the top with toasted shredded coconut, and it was really good. You could use any flavor you want. It's a quick fix for something sweet during the hot summer months.

Another quick sweet lover's fix is to use a can of eagle brand milk, a small tub of cool whip, and a packet of whatever flavor you want, koolaid. Mix all together, and pour into a graham cracker crust, chill, and you're set. I've had a cherry and strawberry pie fixed this way, topped with fresh cherries or strawberries, and they are really good, too.

I made it through the church pot luck and stayed basically on plan. Pork loin, green beans with bacon bits, cabbage with some sausage and carrots. And two cups of coffee with half and half. There were so many desserts and I was not the least bit tempted. After eating the cherry pie a few days ago, its just not worth it.

I really took a step out in faith and wore my ostrich skin western boots. I have no clue how long its been since I've worn them, but its been awhile. Walking in the books is way different than walking in athletic type shoes. But I managed without tripping and falling. Maybe I'll make it a habit and maybe I won't, I'll see how I feel at the time. I use to wear western style boots all the time, but got away from it, mainly because I was wearing compression stockings and shorts (knee length) and it looked stupid. And then I started having balance issues. But today I did okay.

It’s a quiet day here today. DD1 wasn’t feeling great so she stayed home and DD2 and family went to MO for a Cardinals game and zoo trip this weekend. DH just started cutting hay about an hour ago and I’m working on repairing a couple of wind chimes that have taken a beating the past few years. One has been fixed and rehung but the other one is going to be a bit trickier. The weather is really nice today and the windows are open and lots of birds are singing.

This week looks to be busy especially with haying going on. I keep telling myself to get things situated for the week today but I’m just enjoying a lazy day instead. School is out so we’ll have a bit more free time from babysitting but there is always something that needs doing.

Hopefully our new freezer will be delivered this week, (that was supposed to have been last Wed.) I need more freezer space upstairs badly. I’m planning/needing to get some meals or components of meals in the freezer for us and DD2 and family for the summer since she’ll be having surgery coming up soon that will take awhile to recover from.

The deer are already eating the green beans grrrr, so DH will be putting up the electric fence today or tomorrow to keep them out of the garden. Between fighting deer, rabbits, squirrels and raccoons, it’s a wonder we ever get anything from the garden. I’ve got basil, lemon thyme, flat leaf parsley and rosemary growing in large pots on the back porch, I hope they do well. The pineapple sage came back which after the really cold we had this winter surprised me, it doesn’t always make it. Lemon balm, spearmint and peppermint is still spreading from the plants I put out many years ago, I actually never use them but I should learn to. We’re planning on finally doing a patio off the back porch this year which means I’ll need to find new places for onion chives, oregano, garlic chives and maybe some thyme if it made it through. I’m most interested in the onion chives and thyme than the rest.

Last week a local store had pork tenderloin on sale at a good price and we were down to one in the freezer so DH bought 5 packs, that should last us awhile. That and frozen orange juice are the only things we’ve stocked up on lately.

The sun is shinning and its starting to get hot.

We picked up commodities, two boxes of frozen cat fish, several bags of nuts, walnuts and another one I can remember. Chicken drum sticks, and two bags of potatoes. One thing we haven't gotten in a good while is canned salmon, 4 cans (that's for two of us). Various canned foods, one box had a two pound bag of navy beans, none in the other box and two one pound bags of rice, one in each box. Peanut butter, that has been missing for awhile and each box got one jar. We get two boxes, one for each of us.

And I did a walmart pick up, usual stuff, only this time I didn't get any frozen vegs or fresh onions. I have plenty already.

I ate cottage cheese, with chopped up tomatoes and a very small amount of mandarin oranges. And a slice of ezekiel toast with avaccado on it. This meal is turning out to be my first meal on a regular basis. DH got mcdonalds while we were in town and I was kind of hungry when we did get home. I had some more cottage cheese with mandarin oranges, a very small amount of each. Now to rest and then figure out what we are having for supper. I'm starting to lose inches, thank God.

Son found pool. Son is in pool and does not want to come out. Ever. So normal first day of pool stuff. The surprise was finding that Solarcaine has been stopped by the FDA. It cannot be sold in the US because of possible microbiologicals and more likely issue, the amount of lidocaine dispersed in the spray was higher than stated on the bottle. But it doesn't appear that they are making stores pull it from the shelves. And the knock off brands are not being pulled. So I ordered two cans to hold us until I can find an alternate.

Otherwise, tired. Long work day and people trying to make my head hurt. I think I'm going to get dinner going and then go get some gardening done while the day is cooling off. Oh, and go shopping in the freezers for the meals for the rest of the week. I have a bulk order coming Wednesday. And another bulk order next Monday. Both will fill in some gaps. The second one will also provide dairy free evaporated milk and condensed milk for son. And some interesting food garden plants for me, a type of onion and cutting celery.

Son has effectively killed all of his "drums" and he desperately wanted one today. So I gave him one of the empty cat litter pails. He is now guarding it like he thinks I'm going to take it away. But he's happy and I'm looking for 5 gallon plastic barrels/drums for him. I think the heavier plastic might make a drum for him that will last a good while.

I don't use the pudding mix to make pies, but I do use my Kerr 8 oz wide mouth canning jars to make a sort of dessert pudding. I use cook and serve pudding mix and cook it as the instructions say. While it's cooking, I put cookies in the little food chopper and chop them up into coarse crumbs. I like to use the Keebler Pecan Sandies cookies as they make good crumbs. I put a layer of cookie crumbs in the bottom of the jar, then a thin layer of pudding, sliced bananas, pudding, cookie crumbs; and repeat.

Today was a frustrating day in some ways - but luckily my daughter was able to straighten out what was going on and got things running smoothly again. I am so blessed to have my daughter to help me deal with all this getting older stuff.
I plan to go out early tomorrow morning and lay out the rows for my beloved zinnas, green and yellow bush beans (the pole beans from last year were tough), more zinnias, sweet corn, and a few other assorted items before I head to the pool with the neighbor lady. With temps forecast to be in the mid to high 80's the next two days, I'll make sure to water the trenches for the seeds well before I put the seeds in; as well as water the plants currently in the ground, then pull dry soil up over the wet soil so the ground won't crack.

I'll probably have some ripe strawberries to pick after I get home as well - maybe even enough for a small strawberry shortcake for each of us for after supper. Maybe I'd better bake the shortcakes before I head to the pool so it won't heat up the house before we go to bed.

Well, I think I'm going to go read for a bit before bed - a book I'd ordered several months ago dropped in my Kindle so I'm just going to take a brain break and enjoy it!

Take care all; stay safe out there!

We have done absolutely nothing, today. It RAINED!

Tomorrow, we take Mom to see her ENT doctor. I don't know what to expect there. Her nose has been bleeding badly since April 28th off and on. It bled almost all night last night. Sometimes heavy, and sometimes just a bit, during the day and night. She's very weak. I think she's anemic from all the blood loss. I don't think she's going to feel well enough to go shopping like we had planned, afterwards. I just hope that her doctor doesn't put her in the hospital.

praying for your mother also Sherree.

I was making a big salad for my supper and I caught my shoe on a loose floor tile and well, you know, on the the floor I was . I was so upset with myself. I must have wrinched my left arm because I had a hard time using it to try to get myself up. I guess DH heard me fall and he came rushing in. No way could I get up in the kitchen, although I could get myself in a sitting possion. I was determined to get up off the floor, but it was a job. I had to scoot into the living room, no trouble doing that and somehow, after several trys, I got myself on my stomach on my lift chair. I grabbed the back of the arms and lifted myself off the floor but I was still on my belly. It was a chore getting turned around but with DH's help I managed. I was sore as heck, but alright. I finished making my salad and ate it and took a pain pill because I was sore all over. I ended up falling asleep for a couple of hours and now I feel alright and was so thankful to get off the floor.

Today I hope to get a lot done in the garden. We have one that has not been planted yet. Today is the day for that. We tilled it all yesterday. Hubby got the electric fence in good shape and did the weed eating under the fence. I worked in the other gardens while he did that.

I am almost over this sinus stuff. Hubby is improving, but is a day or 2 behind me. But he came down with it a day or so after me. He can't take most cold medications. I had some Zarbees for the kids that he tried and it works for him. I have to get more. It is honey and ivy leaf extract with some other stuff in it, but those are the main ingredients.

Our son invited us to his house for supper Saturday night. It was a nice visit. Their yard is filled with food production. Gardens and fruit trees. Then they have rabbits, chickens, quail, and ducks. We had steaks and quail cooked on the grill. To go with it we had potatoes and some home canned green beans.

My cherries are getting ripe. I have to save seed to plant. A lot of our tree died last year. One side survived and has a decent crop for the size that is left. I have some heirloom plums that I planted from seed. I have to figure out where to plant them now.

Coffee is drank. I better get to work. Everyone have a blessed day.

Sad to hear about your mom Sherree. Will add her to our prayer list. I think nose bleeds are the worst. Nomifyle hope you are still feeling well today. We are bush hogging and planting a little more. I have some perennial hibiscus that I hope to get in the ground today. All of this between showers but probably during light rain. Trying to get some tinctures made today and reorganizing medicines. Not sure the organizational part will get done! Stay strong everyone! And I am off to the front porch for a quiet moment!

Thanks All for your prayers for Mom. Like I said, I don't know what to expect, once we see her doc. She's 82 yrs. old with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (autoimmune) from Lupus. That's just one of her health problems. Her liver is in bad shape, and I have to wonder if there is a connection between that and the nose bleeds. We'll, hopefully, find that out, today. If she has to go in the hospital, I'll come back home, once I get her admitted, and fill my bags with more clothes and personal hygiene items. I'll then go back and stay with her, until she's released.

Yesterday DH and I treated the entire garden and lawn with beneficial nematodes. We garden organically and don't use any pesticides on our property. We have trouble with squash vine borers, asparagus beetles and a few others so we are hoping that 30 million beneficial nematodes will help.
It took a few hours and we were tired when we finished. Now we are hoping for rain.

Today I will be in the greenhouse transplanting seedlings.

I wish the weather would settle, one day 80's the next day frost.

Judy and Sheree, extra prayers for both of you. And fingers crossed. And hugs.

I got to work in the garden for a bit this morning. The next bed is ready for planting. But I had to stop there because the boss called needing help. I did get a count of what plants I need to look for at this weekend's market.

Thanks ladies for your considerations. I've got a slight headache and my left shoulder is painful, all where my 200 pounds landed. DH said you have got to lose a lot more weight so I can help you get up, he wasn't being mean just truthful and I agreed.

The egg shortage must be getting better because we got eggs in the commodities yesterday. We will give them away. There are still people getting eggs from us. The hens have slacked off some from their winter laying, but still getting 12-16 eggs a day. The daily count was higher in the winter, go figure.

The sun is shinning gonna be in the mid to late 80's today and no rain in sight. DH is watering the garden from his collected rain water.

I've got some much needed clean up in the kitchen today, so better get off the computer and get at it. God Bless.

The neighbor lady and I skipped the pool yesterday due to each of us having plans, so we went today instead; we're going to try for one more day this week rather than our usual three as we've both got gardens that need some work. The youngest grandson called shortly after I got home and asked if I'd come help him clean his room this afternoon - found out later that there was a bribe from daughter involved, but what the heck. We went out and picked up sundaes and shakes for the 4 of us so all were in a pretty good mood by the time I went home.

That was about all I did besides a load of laundry and keeping the hummingbird feeders filled, but I'm already to crawl in bed. Maybe I'll have more energy tomorrow...

Prayers were answered! There was nothing seriously wrong with Mom's nosebleeds. Doctor just cauterized a small blood vessel and that was it. Thank God, and thanks to all who prayed. She wanted a cheeseburger for supper, so we stopped at Mc D's and ate, before taking her on home. She loaded me up with a half bushel of huge green bell peppers and several cucumbers.

We'll be making a run into small town tomorrow to pick up some laundry from the dry cleaners, the Wine Shop, TSC, and the bank. Still don't need anything from the grocery store, so will skip going there, until the first of the month. DS called a few minutes ago and told me that Food Giant had their extra large eggs for $1.09 a dozen! I'm tempted to stop there just to get eggs.

What a blessing that your Mom is okay. And it looks like the egg shortage is over for now. I think DH got 16 eggs today.

I made a huge dent in what I needed to do in the kitchen, but not quite finished. I'm kind of tired now so I many not do any more tonight. I though I'd ruined one of my good skillets last week when I cooked cabbage in it and forgot to turn off the stove burner, maybe not, I've almost got it cleaned up and the finish seems to be fine.

DH fixed himself a pizza tonight and I had a stir fry with brussel sprouts, broccoli, riced cabbage and red onion with two eggs scrambled up in it and then a piece of ezekiel bread with avaccado on it, completely full. I've had three meals and it added up to only 631 calories. All the veggies I'm eating don't have many calories in them so it ends up not being a lot of calories. Doesn't seem like much.

I skipped the pool on Monday because I felt like every bone and muscle in my body hurt - Ibuprofen helped some but I had to try out two different beds, a couch and a recliner before I could get comfortable enough to sleep that night. I did go to the pool Tuesday, but was right back to the Ibuprofen bottle when I got home. I took a prophylactic dose a bit ago because I have some garden work I need to get done once I get home from the pool today. That big old Troy Bilt Horse is getting to be almost more than I can handle - reckon that means I need to get in to better shape!!

Younger grandson ran a con on me and his Mama yesterday - he asked me to come help clean his room which is no problem, but the reason he asked was because he had a side deal going with his Mama that he had to clean his room if he wanted her to get him some V-Bucks to play a game, so now he owes me some time. We got the room clean - but still have to do his closet; I'm going to sort out some storage tubs from here at home and take them over so at least the stuff he wants to keep will be organized. And the closet cleaning things is going to work out good too as the local foster child closet just put up a post they are in need of summer clothing and I'm sure he has some that he's outgrown.

I did find some assorted pinwheel lawn ornaments at the Dollar Tree yesterday, so my garden is going to be looking tacky - but if it keeps the dang moles out, I can be as tacky as all get out. I got four big royal blue ones and five smaller holographic ones. The store in daughter's town only had 3 red/white/blue ones left so I may scout the Dollar Tree in work town and see what they've got on hand - I wanted them for the front of the garden.

Well, my ride should be here shortly, so I'd better get off here and make sure I've got everything I need to take with me!

Take care all; stay safe out there!

We got the 1st fence project almost done. We still have some wiring of the fence to the posts to do, but it looks done.

Also, we framed up the blueberry bush, more like tree now at 12+ ft tall. Yes the frame is straight, but my picture taking is not.

The frame is 5 by 5

The fence is 189 feet long 5 1/2 feet tall but has only 4 ft of actual fence. This is to allow water / animal flow.

Thanks Dennis for the help a while back on the photo direction!!

I've made big strides in one area of the kitchen but I've got several other areas to work on. I had to get this one area done to get to the other ones. Big messes but one step at a time.

I had some throw pillows piled up on a table in the living room, mostly used when the sofa was in there, which we moved to the cabin last year. I've run all the pillows through the dryer and now to get them in a large plastic bag to be stored in the cabin.

I've let so many things go, but now I seem to have more energy to get more things done. I'm still dusting in the living room, so that part is still in good shape.

I have a folding recumbent bike in the living room, along side my chair. I managed to get on it twice yesterday. It also has hand things to work my arms. A little at a time.

My offices is still a nightmare, but that may have to be a few things at a time. I want to get to my tread mill to get some walking in.

I've lost right at 11 pounds and some inches. I've got some fat lady shorts on that may fall down soon.

11:45 and I've not eaten anything, but I've been cleaning. I feel pretty good today, the soreness from my recent fall is just about resolved. Dh is feeling much better, he's outside doing things much longer than he had been in recent weeks. God is good, all the time.

@SouthernBreeze Happy to hear that your moms issue wasn’t serious. I read your post the other day about the pie making. We had a graham cracker crust here and I had a couple of boxes of sugar free vanilla pudding needing to be used. So I mixed those up and added some coconut extract, pour it into the pie shell, toasted some coconut for the top and DH was a happy man LOL. Fast, easy and delicious.

@nomifyle So sorry about your fall. Glad that your soreness is going away.

@ReneeT I can’t help but laugh over your grandson! I can see mine doing something similar.

I overdid on Monday and I’ve been paying for it ever since. I’m so sore, stiff, tired and after not getting much sleep last night, I’m sooo sleepy today. Last night I was just about to turn out the light and try and get some sleep when I got a text from a relative, talked for a bit then was just about asleep when some of the smoke alarms went off. We got up and checked out everything, found nothing and went back to bed only to have them go off again. DH noticed a light on one of the alarms blinking and changed the battery (although they were all changed not long ago) and that apparently took care of it. That was after 1am. Then the Lowes guys brought the freezer bright and early this morning and I had been sleeping so well at that point and even though DH was taking care of that, I couldn’t get back to sleep. I feel sluggish!

The freezer is in place, plugged in and is in the process of cooling, I sure hope we don’t have any issues with. Once it‘s ready I plan to slowly move certain things to it. The first things will be those that tend to get lost, overlooked and forgotten about in the chest freezers downstairs. Having this should make things immensely easier for both of since I can’t do stairs very well and he has to make too many trips up and down, and he already has more than enough to do.

Oldest grandson came over yesterday and helped work cattle with DH and the vet. It used to just be me, DH and sometimes our youngest DD. I miss being able to do it but I don’t miss actually doing it

editing to add: I was going to say that our prep this week looks to be DH putting up hay for the cows. He’s presently raking some of what he cut on Monday to start baling today.

I've made banana cream pies with the pudding mix, put a layer of sliced bananas in the bottom of the crust, before filling it with the banana pie filling. Chocolate fudge pies with crumbled oreo cookies or shaved white chocolate on top, etc. Lots of possibilities. The pie recipe using a packet of Koolaid are fun and easy. too. So refreshing on a hot and humid day during the summer.

All of those sound good. We almost always have a graham cracker crust or two on hand because DH loves the cheesecake pies, I can’t remember all of it right now but cream cheese, cool whip and powdered sugar I think. I started making those for him right after we were married but he makes them now! He loves to top it with cherry pie filling which I don’t care for so that part is generally dumped in a bowl and those that want it, can add it.
