Managed to get through Merchant's Trick or Treat last evening - it was pretty chilly but I had my fleece lined long underwear, both bottoms and tops, plus a toasty warm deer costume on top. Poor daughter darn near froze - her costume was an inflatable and the air circulating inside was ccccold! We had enough treats left over that we can use for trick or treat at daughter's this evening - if she's up to it. I'll be riding with her to her dental appointment, then driving her back home, so I need to go downstairs and find a book to take with me or look at what Kindle Unlimited has to offer.

We got a nice surprise this morning. It was raining. Forecast is for only 1/10th of an inch, but we'll take what we can get at this point. At least it's washing all the dust out of the air. 48 degrees right now, and that's our forecast high for today. Freeze warnings for Tuesday and Wednesday nights. 35 for tonight.

I had to throw out an 8 can case of evaporated milk last night. It was 3 years old, and the cans were sort of leaking. I could tell the outside paper on the cans had been wet. So, I need to add another case of that to my next shopping list. All the rest were still ok, but some of the cases need to be used sooner rather than later. We use fresh milk for drinking and canned milk for all my cooking and baking. I empty one can of milk into a quart canning jar and fill with water up to the lower rim. It works great, and I have shelf stable milk year around. It's not good for drinking, though.

Not much going on, today with the weather outside being all rainy and cold. I'll just be doing inside chores. Cary will be reloading.

He checked down at the country store about what's been going on. They didn't know anything, either. I checked with Mom this morning. She has a police scanner. She hadn't picked up anything, but she keeps it turned off half the time.
Mama use to make hot chocolate with the canned milk and cocoa...it was so good. I remember her putting a splash of vanilla in it. I like to keep it but only really use it for cooking.

I get the shelf stable milk from Dollar Tree and the grands help me keep it rotated because they love chocolate milk. DH and I both drink it chilled and it's not bad but I try to save it for prepping since it's a little more expensive than a gallon of regular milk plus it's ultra high temp pasturized. It's always good for at least a month or two after the exp. date. I've never tried it any further out than that because we have no problem keeping it rotated.

I stay stocked up on the canned evaporated milk, but 3 years out is pushing it. That's why I lost that case. I only use it for cooking, too. I really slack off using it during the summer, because I don't do much baking when it's hot. We don't drink a lot of milk. Mostly used for cereal. I buy 1 gal of milk, and it last us 2 weeks.

I haven't been in a Dollar Tree in years, so I've never seen their shelf stable milk.

SouthernBreeze, so sorry to hear you are under the weather. I've heard of more nosebleeds in the last couple years than ever before. Be sure to check your blood pressure. Prayers up that it's just the sniffles.
It's cold here too and I never take the first cold days very well but I have to get moving today! I have an open house this weekend at one of my booths and that thing is not going to stock it's self!

DH and I went to the garden a couple evenings ago because I knew I had a bunch of bell peppers in one of my raised beds and a freeze was coming. We got about two bushels full and were shocked to find about half a bushel of tomatoes...mostly green. I've been jealous of everyone on here that got surprise tomatoes, not realizing the big guy rewarded me with abundance I didn't even pray for. I thanked him appropriately as I gathered all of it.

As soon as I get my booths restocked, my next project will be a deep clean on this house and canning all the things I can that come from the grocery store...can't wait to get some more cole slaw done. That stuff is so good with just about anything.

Also, yesterday, I ordered a lot of supplies for my business. At the last minute, I cut the order in half. I'd planned to order a year's worth of everything but got a gut feeling to put half the money in food preps. The shipping was equal to 1/3 of the total order. I had to discontinue wholesale because of cost of goods sold...just couldn't keep my prices low enough but my brain is still in large quantity mode when I order. I'm so relieved to only be doing retail now and having fun with it plus more profit.

We see them (nosebleeds) in the ER all winter. Be sure to humidify your house and drink plenty of water.

The Sjogren's Syndrome keeps my sinuses dried out just like my eyes and throat, so I'm thinking that was the cause, plus, we started a good fire in the big wood heater, yesterday, drying the air in house out. I've got a tea kettle filled with water sitting on the heater now. That puts back moisture in the air. I keep the kettle going all winter.

I've spent the last week or so practicing sourdough bread-making just about every day. And I'm thrilled with the results. Last night I dehydrated some of the starter and this week I'll test it out to make sure it works. I simply cannot risk being without this starter ever again. Today's loaves are jalapeno cheese.

We have temperatures in the 50s this week, up from the 30s and 40s of last week, so while the garden is dead and everything was already harvested, I have a few more days to clean up and prep for next year. Unlike last year when full-on, hard winter began on October 27 and we didn't warm up until May or June.

My little granddaughter will be here soon, so I'd better get dressed for the day. Oops, dogs are barking. She may be here now.

I was up before dawn again. So I ended up taking a break from work because I have to wait on someone else so I can continue. I'm trying to finish all of the end of month/beginning of month stuff as soon as possible. So that if things do go sideways, boss isn't trying to pick up my work on top of hers.

Then I summoned the energy to get the frost cover over the garlic. It doesn't really need it but the growth is so new. And the cover will keep the stupid squirrels out of them. They will pull up the bulbs, realize they don't like them, and then just toss them. They do the same thing with asparagus and sunchokes.

I got the bay laurel and hibiscus plants in the house. The hibiscus will go back out on the porch after the freeze threat is over. Everything else should be okay with this brief cold snap.

The new toilet is driving me nuts, or was. Until I learned to just hold the button down until the bowl is clear. I'm missing the old one and seriously tempted to find parts, take the pressure washer to it, and reinstall it in the spring.

Chili last night was good. Son absolutely devoured. I think there's enough to drop some in the freezer for one of the backup meals for next week.

I am not looking forward to dropping another $300 on medical co-pays in the next two weeks.

Today should be the last of our below-freezing mornings for a while. Rain arrives tonight or tomorrow morning and our highs AND lows will be around 50-55 for the next few weeks. Probably longer.

Sigh. I **like** the cold temps. It's much nicer to feed animals by walking on TOP of the mud, rather than slogging through 6 inches of it. And a fire in the woodstove just makes me happy.

SB, you can add a cinnamon stick or two to your tea kettle on the stove and it makes the house smell nice, too. Just don't let it steam all the way dry. I have a wood stove steamer and when I fill it with water in the morning, I add cinnamon sticks, a sliced up orange, and a tablespoon of vanilla. The house smells SO good.

I've done that before. Now, all the water heated on the wood stove is used for just hot water on demand, so we don't use the hot water heater as much. It really brings down our wintertime electric bills.

Thank You, Briches :) After 24 years as an RN, with 23 of those spent on an inpatient psychiatric ward, I'm a fan of happy endings. I don't read significant blood/gore/people hurting people, etc...

I've found that a lot of my formerly favorite authors from the past 40 years have stopped writing, or have slowed way down. Plus side - I don't mind re-reading books, especially if it's been a while since I last read it. I ended up going downstairs to the bookshelves and grabbing a couple at random; I'm going to finish the one I started while waiting on daughter so that should keep me occupied for a bit.

Well, I haven't done anything, except sit here and read all day. I haven't even felt like sweeping the floor, today, and that's not something I let go very often. I just don't feel well. No more nosebleed, though, but I've had a bad headache all day.

Cary decided it was time to bring out all of our toys to take apart and clean. That's been his project for today.

Supper will be another skillet pantry meal and cornbread. That's all I feel up to doing.

Hoping that I feel much better in the morning. It's our first of the month big shopping trip day.

I got my latest Blair order, today. 4 new pair of pants.

I could say the same about my reading. I highly recommend Brynne Asher on KU. A bit of romance, adventure, decent storyline, strong male character who isn’t a jerk, etc. I started with her Killers Series - first one is Vines. I will eventually read ALL of hers. I really enjoy them!

Saw the head and neck surgeon for a check up today. Everything looks good, and I will see him again in 6 months. Thank all of you so much for all your prayers when I was fighting cancer. I am blessed no matter what - but I am glad everything is good.

Since we were in the big city, DH and I went thrifting. I didn't really need anything, but i did get a Lularoe top (I really like them, but I'm not about to pay what they want for them!), several books and.....a Zojirushi bread machine for a whole $5.50. I need to see if I can get the manual online. It looks brand new. Also got a bunch of Yankee Candle tarts, and a gob of stuff for our camping sites. I like to have lots of life vests to offer campers, and we also found a set of plastic cornhole boards.

It seems like this year just keeps giving and giving. Computer, house paint, garage door opener, dryer, trees, mudjacking and to top them all -- my furnace has to be replaced next week. I'm trying to see this as preps in that I'm getting these items taken care of while it's still possible. I still haven't bought the clothes I need but have decided I'd better do so asap for the same reason. The only expense that I'd budgeted for was house paint so I'm trying to be thankful that I have savings to pay for everything.

I have a mixture of metal and wood shelving for my downstairs pantry. On metal shelves I do not store cans touching the metal. I use cardboard from cereal boxes on the shelf under the cans. Glass or plastic is okay on metal but metal on metal seems to make the cans rust sooner.

When my sister was up, she brought 80 paperback books, and I sent about the same home with her. A few of the ones she brought, I'd sent to her last time. I guess we need to remember to initial the book, so we know if we read it. I do re-read some of my favorites. She takes books to a half-price bookstore to trade in for credit, so I sent a box for her to use for that.

My first Kitchen Aide mixer caught fire kneading bread. It was under warranty and was replaced for free. Now the new one (warranty expired) is leaking fluid after kneading bread. I wonder why they include a dough hook if the machine is incapable of kneading bread without expiring. I'm going to look for a bread machine next time I'm thrifting. I need to do baking this week to contribute to Sunday's coffee time at church so I hope it will stay alive for that. Another gift of 2023.

Thanks John Deere Girl. It's not right now but it could go that direction eventually. I haven't found my new normal yet since I'm no longer doing wholesale. I never had time before even though some of my wholesale customers sold my products online. On the other hand, this semi retired thing is not bad lol.

Wildwood, where is your booth? I would like to stop in the next time I am in town.

I made my mullein salve in a double boiler. I cut the roots as fine as I could; no bigger the 1/4 inch. I added finely cut dried leaves too. Covered it all in coconut oil and heated low for a couple of hours. I did not add wax but it is working ok without it.

We worked at our church Hallelujah Night last night. We had games, candy, hot dogs, and nachos for everyone. It was lots of fun. I am getting around a little slow but my coffee should help with that.

I'm feeling much better this morning. Still tired, but no more nosebleeds or headache.

I got the call letting me know my new glasses are ready to pick up. That's what we'll do today, instead of shopping for groceries. Glasses means a trip into big town, and grocery shopping is done in a small town (taxes are much cheaper). We'll grocery shop tomorrow. I might decide to go another route home from big town and swing through another small town where we buy all of our meat. That will save us a trip to that town, tomorrow.

27 degrees overnight. Brrrr, it's cold. Only in the low 50's today. No rain in sight, again. We're still under a burn ban and a red flag warning, today.

Is this the comfrey salve you are talking about. I could do that with some I've purchased.

Baby girl went home and I had great plans for the rest of the week. But she left something behind…
her cold!!! The last time I caught a virus from her I ended up hospitalized for 7 days, so I am going to do all the recommended cold treatments. REST, fluids and more rest!! I have a cookie order for a baby shower that I HAVE to get done before Tuesday. It’s 100 cookies so it will take me at least 1day to bake, and 2-3 days to decorate depending on my carpel tunnel situation. UGH! If it’s not one thing it’s another!

Bulk pickup went okay. Son was out of sorts because it was two adventures in one morning. He kept trying to get me to go home. One the truck arrived, he put it all together. Got everything loaded and paid for. Got home. He was thrilled to be home. I got everything in the house. Then I discovered I need to rearrange the freezers. But everything is in a place for the moment. I'll finish it after work.

And then my body decided that it is going to cramp. All lower body, wrapped all the way around, solid cramping. I have very not nice words. It's the uterus. So I'm grabbing Pamprin, arnica, ouch ointment and trying to help the muscles relax.

And handling all the "oops, I forgot" last minute things that the boss found this morning. Ack. I want to go back to sleep now.

We made it back home without incident, although armed. I got my new glasses and I love them. Cary wanted to go to Academy for more ammo and reloading supplies. He spent more than he should have, but he thought we needed it, so I didn't say anything. I let him take care of manly stuff, and I take care of the food supply. He doesn't say a word about what or how much I stock, so I can't say much about what he buys. Then, we went a different way home, so we could go to our meat store. Loaded up there, then came home. I bought more cake mixes for the freezer there, too. They have a great supply of all kinds of cake mixes whereas Walmart's supply and variety is most pitiful. I bought 5 more boxes.

Everything is dated and put away. Supper will just be sandwiches and chips.

Have gotten a lot done today - errands, pulled 2 boxes out of storage and went thru them. A nice pot that will go in the camper, and a lid for my others I have been missing. Again - I am so disorganized!! Reloaded the freezedryer and managed to even clean off my dining room table. Downloaded the instructions for my new breadmaker, folded a load of laundry, and pulled out some magazines to get sent to my awesome son-in-law.

Tonight, I'm teaching a class on gut-brain health where we are going to make kraut, so I got every thing ready for that.

I got three bags of stuff prepped for the freezers. But I can't go put them away until son settles down some. He decided to not eat lunch so his system is out of whack.

I'm honestly debating waffles for him and keto grilled cheese sandwiches for me, for dinner.

The cramping eases off for a bit if I get up and walk. So much like pregnancy labor. So I'm balancing that against the pure exhaustion the pain is causing.

Son just snuck in for kisses. And then stomped out because he got kisses. I love my son.

More son mischief. He came back in dressed in normal clothes so we could go get the toys and blankets he tossed out the window. Then he got upset because he couldn't get his coat on correctly. He started to get all angry and pissy. I told him I was not willing to go outside with him until he calmed down. So he stomped away again. I honestly thought he was going to change and curl up for a bit. But he just stomped around. Then he came back and peeked around the corner.

I asked him if he could be good and got an air kiss. So I told him we could go outside. Then he wanted me to go right then. I had to remind him that I needed my coat. So he followed me to my coat. And then guided me to the door. All while behaving. And then he ran out to get everything. Stopped. Came back and gave me a forehead to forehead hug with a kiss, and then cleaned everything up.

When he doesn't eat, his system goes all crazy. And for some reason, he's turning down some of his normal favorites. I'm not sure what is up with that.

But he's back in a relatively good mood. And dinner should put an end to any of those issues.

Just some interesting history: Nov. 1968 -- Folgers coffee 3# for $1.89; 1# brown or powdered sugar 14 cents; 8 oz. Kraft Philadelphia cream cheese 29 cents.

Ran some errands this afternoon to bank for cash, post office to mail stuff and buy stamps, drop off water bill and to get gas. At the bank they had 2024 calendars, so I picked up two, one for the office and one for the kitchen. When I got home, I went through each calendar with a black marker and wrote the date in large numbers so I can read them from a distance. I do this each year. BTW stamp prices are going to go up again soon so I'm going to buy more soon.

When I got up this a.m. I was all primed to go to town to shop, until I put on my shoes and remembered I was minus a toenail, and it is still in the healing process. I go back to the doctor the 9th so will wait to shop that day in the morning before my 1:30 appointment. Hopefully no snow or ice then or in the meantime. I only need to go to Walmart, Dollar Tree and Aldi and they are all close together. The bridge to the shopping center should be open by then, however, the bridge to the medical center is down from four lanes to two lanes until late 2025. Fun and games. At least I will not have to go back through the two-lane mess after the doctor appointment.

I added up my savings for the year through November and discovered even with the additional expenses there is enough there to cover household (full year) and car insurance (six months) due the week after Christmas. The furnace will have to come out of long-term savings. I keep repeating to myself, be thankful you have the money and trust the Lord in this whole year's financial chaos. More and more I keep thinking this is the Lord's way of preparing me for whatever is coming.
On another note, the last time at was at the Post Office the clerk was NOT at all friendly and really surly. Today's clerk was so nice and friendly and helpful. She was absolutely covered in tattoos which I don't like, but hers looked to be very artistic. I don't judge anyone for having tattoos, but really don't like the whole idea of permanent disfigurement.

The best laid plans etc. My brother texted me at 1:00 pm that our mother’s last remaining sibling had passed away. He had no other details. I was able to get ahold of a cousin and found out the funeral is tomorrow at 1pm. So after a mad dash and a 2 hour drive, I’m sitting in Boston airport waiting for my 9 pm flight to Iceland!! Return trip is Friday so first thing Saturday I’ll start on the darn cookies.

I wasn’t feeling well on Monday so pretty much just made the bed and spent the day with granddaughter. Worked in the basement again for a few hours yesterday and finished up an inventory and organization of the home canned items and spices, herbs, seasonings etc. Started looking at the bucket items and we seem to be well stocked on different sugars, even though we don’t use a lot of it. I’ve got so many buckets pulled out in the floor it’s going to be hard to move around in there. DH brought more things up that I need to get put away.

We decided last minute last night that if I was up to it this morning we’d head to Jackson and do some more “hole filling” and a little Christmas shopping. We stopped first at Aldi where I bought some canned items, little cans of tomato sauce, some pumpkin purée, pumpkin seeds, a few cans of corn, a few cans of evaporated milk. Lots of baking chips, pudding mixes, some chocolate bars for the grandkids Christmas stockings, a few different flavors of canned frosting for when the grandkids want to make cake or cupcakes and I don’t want the mess of them making it from scratch (the two youngest make the biggest messes). And several rolls of the Goya Marie cookies that we all like.

Sam‘s was a couple of containers of coffee, two big tins of the butter cookies that has been talked about here recently, 10 lbs of onions, chicken and beef broth, a bag of russet potatoes, 12 lbs of butter, maple syrup, generic aleve, granulated garlic and onion (I noticed there was only one bottle of garlic left downstairs yesterday), some cheese, sandwich meat, buns, boxed mac&cheese, several snack items for everyone in the family, some practical Christmas gifts for the kiddos like deodorant and body wash for the 12 and 14 yr olds, a few cleaning items and of course 2 rotisserie chickens.

I’m so exhausted tonight, it will take me several days to recuperate from it and I still have everything minus the cold/frozen items to put away.

Stopped by Dollar General and picked up a bunch of generic cold medicine from the $ shelf, plus a few other things.

Then off to Aldis. They had the yellow potatoes (which I prefer) for $2.49 for 5 lbs, so got 2 bags, which will cover us through Thanksgiving (a whole bag) and the rest of the month. Their Christmas stuff was out so I got 4 bags of my favorite butter cookies. A 4 lb. bag of sugar was $3.29. Man, that has really gone up. I was just topping off the container in the kitchen as I have a lot of sugar stored. Bought some hamburger meat, some pork steak, some chicken tenders and some burnt pork ends. First time buying meat in a while. Another bottle of oil and one of olive oil. Didn't buy a lot of fluff and walked out with $76 of stuff, but they didn't have any whipping cream. Trying to get everything together for Thanksgiving.

Then at home I ordered the pantry pack November special from Thrive Life foods.

I will be watching the sales this month and trying to find room to stuff extra cans and boxes. Also buying extra for the food pantry.
