Prep Genrl Weekly Prep Thread: September 1 ~ 7, 2019

Woo-Hoo! September! My most favorite month of the year, especially for prepping, because it's apple season, fall hunting season is kicking in, and it's finally cooling off enough to enjoy being outside!

Any prepping going on out your way? I picked up a couple more bricks of .22, my canning jar connection gifted me with several more boxes of jars, and I added a bit more Ensure and Boost to the pantry for Hubby last week.

This week, I'm planning to pick up more sugar, but most of my spare energy this week is going to be spent cleaning up around the shed in preps for getting it painted, and doing a heavy fall cleaning on the house in preps for company coming in a couple of weeks. If we get time, we'll also slap a coat of paint on the porch rails, and maybe give the porch chairs a fresh coat as well.

It's another work weekend, so I'd better get myself around so I can stop and pick up the donuts - the crew tells me that they are glad to have their donut connection back at work

DNephew and 2 friends are here to help with farm 'mechanic-ing' in exchange for using the pasture to dove hunt tomorrow. Really good kids and get excited about home cooking. I'm happy to have someone to cook for!! Plan to try to do a little weeding and work on cleaning my pantry, measure a swing seat I need to make (ugh - years long project - just hasn't been a priority). I"m off tomorrow, so I'll have time then too (hopefully).

Later tonight, I'm going by my boss' for her birthday - hog roast and I can't turn that down!! Not sure if DH will go with or stay home with the boys and do some target shooting (I"m guessing I know which!!)

This is a repost from the GSM thread, concerns prep.

Went to a local farmers market this morning, gasp we got up at 7:00 am very early for us. This market is supposed to be a very good one. We are less than impressed, most hand crafted things and cooked food. I was looking for American grown garlic to plant and local honey, none at all. Went to a health food store, no American grown garlic. Walmart had organic garlic, 3 to a package, I got two packages. Walmart shelves were over flowing, there was a Delmonte section, I did notice a lot of Libby products too. Went to a Super One and a Country Market and Dollar Tree. I did buy a few things at each store, but not much because I don't have any holes in my food stores. I did buy 2 cases of water at Super one because it was $1.98 which is cheaper than Walmart. We also went to a thrift store, but I only spent a few dollars there.

I took DH out to eat for our Anniversary which is coming up. It was kind of pricey, food was medocure but the company was great.

The town we went to is about 50 miles away, we are home, unloaded and now I'm about to take a nap.

I found honey at a gas station on the way home, close to a quart for 14.99. I think DH has decided he wants to keep bees.

Got bok choy and carrots planted in time for the rain so no watering. I am finally getting okra so hope to put some in the freezer. Putting everything I can in the freezer. The pantry is looking pretty good.

Cleaning and minimizing so things can be organized easier. Washing up sheets and blankets but need to purchase a couple of new blankets for the winter.

Tomorrow is our bimonthly trip to Sam's Club. Even though my pantry is stocked, I will still be picking up items that are on sale there. I've just got the feeling that I need to stock more food. With a very limited income, more food is my priority, instead of more TP, dish wash, laundry detergent, etc. I guess if one is serious about prepping, no one is ever finished.

My Dad moved back to the city after I told him not to (too much traffic and not safe), so I hit some different stores when I went to visit him. Finally found some shorts. End of summer, but I was down to one pair.
I stopped at a Walmart to get him some soft drinks, and everyone was stocking up on bottled water, soft drinks, and comfort foods. They change the hurricane threat every 15 minutes but at least people are paying attention. I didn't really need any more water but I got some since I was there. I was out of cat food since I had to throw out all my Friskies stash and my spoiled cats wouldn't eat any of the baby food I tried to feed them. They pretty much attack me when I open a can of Aldi chicken for myself, so I was sure they'd eat that. They wouldn't touch it. The dog was more than happy to eat everything they refused. I bought a few cans of different cat food and I hope they'll eat that. And I got more cookies for me.
Did two extra loads of laundry and topped off the tractor fuel. I really wish this hurricane would just blow back out to sea...

After leaving my Rheumatologist's office today having more x-rays on both my knees, and fending off steroid injections in them, I hopped on over to Sam's and took advantage on some of their sale items, today. I got more canned chicken breasts, coffee, spices, and mayo. I did splurge on a few extras like TP, cleaning products, large box of Scotch Brite, and a 4 can package of Lysol spray. With winter right around the corner, I like to keep my house sprayed with Lysol.

Just getting home, and am relaxing with feet elevated to keep the pain and swelling down in my knees. Lupus sucks!

We canned 12 qtr of very hot salsa.

I took a bite and my eyes closed from the heat and my lips were numb for 30 minutes...

Wife says it was perfect.

I lucked out on a super sale on Ball canning jars at the grocery store. I got all the wide mouth pint and quart jars they had. 16 cases. Yes, cases, for $58. I have them stacked in the corner, where I can admire them, for the time being. Going to try my hand at canning meats for the first time.

Wow, that's one heck of a great deal!!

Little bits here and there--some canned potatoes, poptarts, granola bars, deodorant, soup, yellow rice, more flour and sugar. It all adds up rather quickly and I only buy stuff on sale. I also placed orders through Carters for some clothes for my grandkids in the next two sizes up--had $40 off when I spent $100 and most of the things I bought (various t-shirts and leggings) were $5 each. That is about what they cost at the thrift stores here. On Amazon I just ordered a "wood gasifier stove" which is basically a hobo stove. Lots of sticks and little limbs to pick up around here to start building up a fuel supply. It is to supplement my coleman stove in emergencies.

Very disappointed to find out today that our campaign to recall our governor did not receive enough signatures. I am trusting that God will keep us and put us where we need to be, but for all my conservative friends - avoid Colorado. Most of the state (not including the blue stripe up the middle) is conservative, but I can't suggest you spend money here to go into the state coffers.

Bought a new-to-me dining room table that needs a little love. The one I have needs a LOT of love! I figure I"m getting off cheaper by buying the 'new' one and working on it. Old DRT is the 80s oak style that everyone and their dog has. New DRT is antique Duncan Phyfe with needlepoint chairs that is in pretty good shape. I paid $75 for table and 6 chairs.

I also called to cancel a couple credit cards that are driving us nuts with the way they bill - and we've ended up with late charges. Completely unacceptable customer service, so they're gone.

Finally gotten the marjority of my store bought canned foods organized. Now I can see, just by looking, when I've used something. Before I go to the grocery I can check to see where the holes are and replace that amount. This will cut back on my impulse stocking up. There are only a few things I need to go to the grocery for, except filling the holes.

It is so great to have home canned meats on hand - having them makes it so easy to put together a quick meal! What types of meat will you be canning?
