ok,

I'm not the handiest with tools - just basic house repairs and putting bikes together for kids type things.

Assuming gas shoots to $5/gallon, a small wave of terrorist attacks and an economic meltdown...

what would be the basic mechanical skillls and tools needed for urban/suburban survival?

Do i learn to fix bicycles or motorcycles when people start dumping their SUVs?

if electricity gets unreliable, should I plan on getting a small solar rig and learn soldering/welding, etc?

ham radio for comms?

not everybody can move to the country and start small farms.

appreciate any ideas people can throw at me.

Wow! Where to start????? No skills are bad; learn what you can. If you drive older vehicles, say 60's or so, far less technical skills are required for maintenance. They don't have computers and electronic engine management systems.

Maybe a Honda 90 will be a better mode of transportation, in the scenario you describe.

what's a honda 90?

don't know what a honda 90 is?

you talking 2-stroke bike?

I actually do have a dirtbike for fun. However most people you can haul on a 2-wheeler is 2.

for economical transport in the burbs I'd have to use human-powered bicycles or maybe some kind of electric vehicle that can be recharged from 12v solar.

I'm also thinking some kind of basic medical training woulding hurt.

Naw. a sidecar would work on that bike, although I'd uprate the motor from 70cc's to 110cc's. It'd hit about hmm 50 with one, i'd wager.

As far as dune buggy's go, the idea is maneuverability. On this bike, you can cut through stopped traffic like it simply isn't there. You'd also be suprised at how well that little booger does off pavement.
