What would you miss from your kitchen the most?

If tomorrow you couldn't go to the market or possibly even pull something out of your pantry or garden or root cellar. What one item would you miss the most?

Well of course as soon as I thought of this my little one needed to go potty and still needs mamas help...

I think I was thinking about this because I thought I had a package of almonds in the freezer and as I came to realize I didn't I almost had withdrawl just thinking about not having any. It's 60 degrees, frrrrreezing almost rain in buckets and I almost didn't make it down the road coming home a little while ago and yet I was entertaining the thought of driving 20 miles (one way) to chinaworld to get some, and not even good ones at that.
I put pecans, walnuts or almonds in almost everything I make, including green beans. I know I could find pecans or walnuts if I looked really hard but almonds would be hard to come by. I'd possibly kill for almonds at least throw a punch for them. :)

Ice, tea,(both at once), milk, potato chips, eggs, okra, fresh butchered beef & pork. I have alot canned. That's not fair! If I can't go to my grocery store or garden you should at least let me go to my pantry. Now I'm pouting.:(

I made a huge amount a few years back for a church bazzaar. I just used canola oil, a must, and added dried chili peppers. I use as many chilis as I can cram into whatever jar I use and fill to the top with canola oil. Then you replenish with the oil as you use it. My oldest SD drizzles it on popcorn!

Thanks, MissTina! That sounds easy enough so I'll give it a try soon. Oh, I hope it works because I love the stuff!! Does it turn out super-duper hot?

I'll definitely try that fire oil!! Thanks MissTina! One of the things I'd miss most from the kitchen I guess is ice cold milk. Can't stand to be out of milk and always plan to be sure I never run out. "Got Milk?" Annie

The longer it sets the hotter it gets!!!!!
It makes really great presents during the holidays.
I found some glass decanters at a dollar store, the kind that actually sells things for a $1. They sat in a green and cream woven cozy and they look fabulous with the red inside. Tie with some ribbon or raffia and it's a GREAT gift! Good Luck!

Okay you guys; please clue me in on the various ways you use this "fire oil". And what other variations & uses are there?

Can you see any problems with making some up using herbs like oregano, basil, garlic, etc.?

Thanks, MissTina! Do the peppers have to be dried? I guess the fresh ones may turn a bit funky, huh? No prob, I'll just dry some first.

Shep, I use fire oil on everything!! Drizzle it on, well, anything. Use it in cooking and as a table condiment. Eggs, casseroles, soups, stir fry, meats, side dishes, salads.... *drool*

Don't know about herbs in oil personally but they make great vinegars!!

I've been pondering this question because of the "possibly even pull something out of your pantry or garden or root cellar". In which case I, or my home would be incapacitated. In that case, I would miss everything.

But, if it were just "couldn't go to the market" I would say ice cream. I have the back up for all dairy, except making ice cream.

Red Rose Tea! My most notable vice.

Tell me more about this tea. My favorite color is red, my favorite flower is the rose and my favorite drink is tea. My favorite scent is green tea. But I've never heard of Red Rose Tea.

FYI: I use the "fire oil" to cook just about anything as booger stated. My favorite is in cooking oriental cuisine. I like to mix some with sour cream as a dip for chips or veggies.

I guess I never really answered the original question, did I? Well I have to repeat what Arubi said because my pantry is where my food storage and other supplies are... that IS my grocery store for the most part. But my biggest concern of being unable to literally go to the store to refresh my supplies, are for things like sugar, chocolate, salt... etc. Things we cannot "grow" ourselves. Therefore, I keep adding more and more to my "supplies", as money and space allows. Of course, cigarettes and Pepsi are the biggies... we'd survive, but probably kill each other out of frustration, LOL.

I think if TSHTF, the thing I might miss the most if utilities were turned off, is my wonderful kitchen sink with the faucet where the hot and cold water come out.

Ever noticed how hard it is to keep clean, and clean up the kitchen and clean the food before cooking when the power's off and the water's not running?

:shkr:

ACK ! ShepITV , please don't put a herb to an oil, without FIRST researching about it. Something about an "aerobic state" in which botulism can set up.Heard about it on "food network" Sara Moultons' show, I think. Sorry, no time to research it for you, but please do so, yourself !

Gee, what would I miss the most? Putting aside the dishwasher, fridge and stove, I would have to say chocolate! It is always good for a quick pick me up and always helps when you are depressed!

Everything's better with chocolate! :D

Thanks Occupant - I thot I'd heard such rumors, but was wondering if anyone here knew for sure. You see those bottles in the stores with various items, including what looks like herbs in them... so I wondered if it was safe.

ohhhhhhhhhhhh

Butter & or margerine, have done with out & had to use bacon grease to make pies, even instead of useing lard. My great uncles family ate lard on toast as they couldnt afford butter back in the 30's. never know what u can do & stand when you have to.

I'd have to say if I couldn't go to the pantry, root cellar or garden. We'd miss food. That is where I keep the food. Well I don't have a root cellar per say but I use the power house as a bit of a root cellar.
