Misc/Chat Worms

I was curious whether any one else had been seeing a large amount of worms this summer? They are everywhere in my yard, not just one or two places. My potato bed has so many that the dirt is mostly worm castings. I've been gathering them and putting them in the beds that need more work.

Not only are there a lot, but some of them are really big. I haven't done anything special to any of the beds that would have attracted them. I gather leaves and cover all the beds every fall, but nothing else is added except a little fish fertilizer. I'm really loving what they're doing to the soil.

Worms love leaf mulch. I mulch my garlic bed with leaves every fall and the earthworms there are gigantic. They also like shredded newspaper.

I add shredded newspaper once in awhile too. The last time I added it, it didn't break down very well. I wondered if it was being made with something different. I put a little bit in one bed today to see how it does.

I've never had much luck getting shredded paper to break down easily. Even in the chicken pen, leaves break down into a wonderful dark brown mulch... shredded paper stays whole and recognizable WAY too long to suit me.

Thanks everybody. I don't think I'm going to bother with the paper any more. I have a leaf vacuum that also mulches. I guess I should use that more. My neighbor's gave me bags of leaves, and I just dumped them on the gardens last year. I think I'll run them through the leaf vacumn first if they give me any this year.

Lots of worms and night crawlers.
