Been an eventful year so far, we literally just had the very long doom thread about the Iranian general and right away we are already onto the next long doomy thread about a possible pandemic

Uh no, The Common Cold is one of the many variants of a coronavirus but this is a totally different one. From the reports, I'm hearing some people are lucky and get a milder form which is something like severe cold/chest flu but many others are getting a very serious and potentially deadly version that attacks the lungs.

Most hospitals only have room/equipment for that sort of lung collapse - thing about that...

True, but that doesn't mean that they can't also cause other illnesses. SARS and MERS are also both coronavirus'. Last I knew they were slightly worse than common colds.

Actually, seems that this has been reported as an airborne threat. Handwashing means precisely dick when someone sneezes within a certain range and under certain conditions. This one seems to be particularly virulent, and is a new contagion that is not necessarily something well-addressed by every person's immune system.

Reuters: China’s finance ministry says it is allocating 1 billion yuan ($144 mln) in funding to Hubei province to assist ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak of a new coronavirus that has infected more than 600 people in the country.

Yes ... same core type illness .... but that doesn't mean much. Lions, Tigers, and the common House cats are all from the family of Felidae and share 95% or so common DNA ... one may scratch up your favorite easy chair, the other two may flat out eat you. Common linkage doesn't equate to same danger.

Yep, that every year common cold that quarantined 10’s of millions.... I’ll buy that for a dollar!!

You are mistaken. This coronavirus is more virulent. It can develop into ARDS. Do research on that.

I'm not a med student, and am not disagreeing with you. Just making a note that governments (because of the money involved) don't usually quarantine areas, and stop flights, and put in place medical check points at airports, due to the common cold.

ETA: looks like I clicked on the wrong reply button, which was supposed to be back to: You people do know that coronavirus is just the common cold.

Important to note: Wuhan (and the surrounding region) have not released ANY new figures for more than 26 hours. No one knows if the death toll there has risen, or how many new cases there are.

One of my coworkers (not in my office/ city) is planning on traveling to China for work the last 2 weeks of February. I was talking to her a couple days ago about this and then my boss texted me and said I was scaring her so stop talking to her about it. I am sitting here going see? 2 days ago no cities were quarantined. There was no travel warning from the US State department. See what 48 hours can do. I have not spoken to her since Tuesday so not sure if she is staying up on the news.....

I tend to believe the latter items. China never ever reports the truth. If it is 600, then it is 6,000. If 6,000 then it really is 60,000 or 600,000. That is just the way they are.
