The "no apparent reason" is quite apparent. They don't have the hospitals, personnel, or medical equipment to cope with a mass infection of severely ill and severely contagious patients in respiratory distress with a nasty and virulent new bug. Knowing this, if they don't lock down, Italy could become Hubei 2.0.

The death rate can likely be kept to a minimum if you have optimal equipment, enough rooms, and enough medically trained personnel to deal with it. If you don't, or if the hospitals become overrun or even contaminated, that's a massive disaster.

Not really sure how you can get any more doom and gloom than that! Heck, even an asteroid or an EMP at this point would tell us exactly where we're at or wipe out humanity altogether. The unpredictability of this thing is what has people really freaked out.
Yes and people are doing no service to the community when they use the deaths versus infections instead of cured. It makes this whole thing look like a nothing burger.... when obviously it is something.....

How many people in Oregon are being monitored for coronavirus? Health officials won't say
In comparison, the state of Washington posts on their public website the number of people being monitored.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon Health Authority refuses to reveal how many people in the state are being monitored for the coronavirus, now called COVID-19.

Spokesman Jonathan Modie said “there is a lot of stigma connected to the virus right now.”

He added that withholding the total number of people monitored would “protect the privacy of the individuals we are monitoring.”

He also cited a state law, ORS 433.008, which he said means “any information obtained by OHA or a local public health authority in the course of an investigation of a reportable disease or disease outbreak is confidential."

KGW is not asking for names or addresses, only seeking the entire number.

In comparison, the state of Washington posts on their public website the number of folks being monitored.

And in California, the California Department of Public Health reports 7,600 people statewide are self-monitoring.
Knute Buehler, a leading Republican in Oregon who is now running for Congress, and happens to be a medical doctor, issued a statement on OHA’s refusal.

“In times of serious disease outbreaks, where lives are at stake, government health officials must go the extra mile to share information with the public. Unfortunately, our state government does not have a culture of transparency. Now is not the time to be holding information back. It not only breeds distrust; it could cost lives,” Buehler wrote.

Unlike Singapore, who has text alerts if you get within a certain proximity of a confirmed infected or quarantined person. They care more about preserving the lives of their citizens, rather than their feelings.

Remember all the memorials and obits that were online after the Twin Towers? Where are all the ones for the Pandemic? It looks like there would be obits all over Twitter (it is an International platform) and I'm not seeing any. Just something else in this train wreck that makes me go Hmmm?
This isn’t an attack, a point source of instant death. This is just people dying by another flavor of nature. Has anyone compared these deaths to normal death rates of various causes?

A little thread drift but triple antibiotic ointment may get hard to find as I imagine the antibiotic components come from Asia. I’m guessing but perhaps cats are more popular now in cities because years ago, a scratch could cause major problems or at least expense from an apothecary. Country folk had knowledge and free access to natural medicines and probably a better inherited immune system for such things. I do not expect a long term shortage (years) but it may become unobtanium for at least several months. Summer and nicks and cuts are are arriving soon.

Thinking there is an electric shock applied to the head when that net went over the head. Guy stopped moving. I'm not sure I'm loving this like everybody else is saying.

He knew he was supposed to stop, because it was a drill. The blocking vehicle was a little slow. They'll get better with more practice victims.

Stopped at the Farm & Fleet this morning for feed and a new battery for the 4-wheeler that finally went TU after 16 years. Don't want to do without that little workhorse in case re-supply gets sparse (or the batteries come from China...didn't look).

Anyway...WallyWorld parking lot, Aldi's etc. seemed normal for a Monday morning. People are still snoozing here, but doubt it will be much longer. I'm waiting on the next official CDC update. Should be "interesting". They are gonna have to start priming people soon.

Canada confirms 11th case of coronavirus
From CNN’s Paula Newton

Canada has confirmed its 11th case of coronavirus, according to health officials.
In a joint statement, Health Minister Adrian Dix and Dr. Bonnie Henry, health officer for British Columbia, said the affected person, a male in his 40s, was in close contact with a previously reported confirmed case.

“Both cases remain in isolation at home with support and monitoring from public health teams,” the statement said.
“Given the changing dynamics of the outbreak in China and globally, and recognizing we are in the midst of influenza season, we ask all travelers who are returning to B.C. — no matter where they were in the world — to monitor themselves and their children closely for symptoms,” the joint statement said. Adding, “the risk of spread of this virus within British Columbia continues to remain low at this time.”
In total, Canada has 11 total cases of confirmed coronavirus; four in Ontario and seven in British Columbia.

US senators will be briefed tomorrow on coronavirus
From CNN's Manu Raju

All US senators will be briefed Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. in a classified setting on the novel coronavirus, two sources with knowledge of the plans tell CNN.

One source said that the briefing will be in a classified setting because the senators who are organizing it wanted to be prepared in case a senator asks a question that can only be answered in a classified setting
.
There will be briefers from the Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Homeland Security, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health and the State Department, one source added.

The last day of the month is the 29th, that is Saturday.
Military and lots of other people will get paid on Friday.
Thursday of this week might be a good day. Friday could be sparse depending on where you live.

I agree with this, but on the plus side, the recovered:dead ratio has been steadily improving. Was 4:1 a couple of weeks ago and now around 9:1. death as percentage of infected has remained pretty steady at 2-3%. If you believe the public numbers.

I noticed the same and for one am very glad to hear that..... that fact that people stay sick for long periods of time does not make me happy.

'Don't open the door'

(ANSA) - Milan, February 24 - Lombardy's Welfare Councilor Giulio Gallera on Monday warned the population living in areas in the northern Italian region affected by the outbreak of the novel coronavirus not to open their doors because there are looters dressed like Red Cross personnel.

"In the red area" affected by the spread of the virus "there have been people dressed with the Red Cross uniform who show up to do screening" tests, he said.

"They are looters who walk into people's homes, there are no Red Cross volunteers or other who have been dispatched for screenings", explained Gallera, urging the population "not to let anyone in if you have not requested beforehand the dispatch of ATS (Alto Trevigiano Servizi) personnel for exams".

Panic Early - Panic Often
Well, Costco IS a “buy in bulk stock up “ kind of store anyway, so large amounts make sense. But who knows what that means seeing those 50# bags with a pandemic virus on the loose.
This was Sam's club on Saturday. 50# white rice on right, 25# rice on left. I did not see any other pallets of this rice in the store. SW Florida

Day by day
I am at Costco and I can say that the herd is starting to wake up....

Took me almost 15 minutes to find a parking place on a Monday afternoon usually I could park right at the front. Half the parking places should be half empty and instead there is not a parking place in the entire lot front to back

Oh cr*p...thanks for sharing that. We just got our rebate check and were heading there in a few days...last big stock-up before we pretty much hunker down and only go locally and for med appts or a critical, unforeseen need. The closest Costcos to us are in Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, and they're all hrs away.
