Oil slides more than 2%, tumbling deeper into bear market territory

Oil prices fell more than 2% on Wednesday after hundreds of new coronavirus cases reported in Asia, Europe and the Middle East stoked fears that energy demand would decline, while crude oil inventories in the United States grew.

Brent crude fell $1.52 or 2.7% to settle at $53.43 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 2.34%, or $1.17, to settle at $48.73 per barrel.

“It’s still all about the virus here,” said Bob Yawger, director of energy futures at Mizuho in New York. “It’s hard to come up with any type of scenario where demand increases over the next couple months.”

Prices briefly turned positive after the U.S. government reported a drop in gasoline inventories last week. Crude stocks grew by 452,000 barrels to 443.3 million barrels, the Energy Information Administration said, which was less than the 2-million-barrel rise analysts had expected.

Goldman Sachs cut its 2020 oil demand growth forecast to 600,000 barrels per day (bpd) from 1.2 million bpd, and lowered its Brent forecast to $60 a barrel from $63.

“We see oil prices improving through the year, assuming demand begins to normalise” in the second half, it said.

This is not good for those of us in the industry and there is a lot of trickle down from the energy sector to the economy at large.

I think anyone that travels outside the country should be required to
pay for the coronavirus test and 14 days of government quarantine upon their return
"before they leave the country".
as a matter of fact

I am not understanding why everyone wants to pay for someone else's vacation expenses.

I almost agree with you. The US taxpayer should not be on the hook for this, but I think that the payer should be China. Whether they created this in a lab and it got out or even if natural, they knew about it for a period of time and kept their mouths shut as it spread around the globe. It is time to hold China accountable at least once for their actions and they should pay all expenses, including treatment, quarantine, salaries, government resources spent, etc etc as if they had behaved in a more responsible manner perhaps this would not be the issue it is today.

So I suggest we start seizing assets and bank accounts to cover the bills and perhaps they will next time worry a bit more about their responsibilities and a little less about their saving face.

There was an explosion at a California refinery. Until and if they can get it back on line I expect west coast gas and home heating fuel prices to increase at least for the short term. The picture of the explosion looked pretty impressive. They may be forced to build a new refinery. In the long run that might not be a bad thing.

Trying to do that with the eco winnies in Cali may prove problematic but so does walking long distances.

The problem is that the patients that would have gone to this facility as intermediary "skilled nursing" in individual rooms, (hopefully with appropriate ventilation.) now will be occupying the isolation rooms in hospitals. People who get the virus and need specialty inhalation services will not be able to get them in smaller hospitals as the room will be occupied for several weeks (now avg 18 days ill) by someone only needing intermediary care because they are infectious.

These (infectious) isolation rooms are not in every hospital, so people who need them will have to be scattered around.

So the 4 infectious people from the Diamond Princess could not stay at Travis because they were infectious. As Costa Mesa would not allow an intermediary care facility to be established there for infectious people, these 4 people had to be scattered around 4 hospitals in N. CA that had such rooms. Now anyone from those communities that becomes infected and needs an ICU bed with a ventilator may have to find another hospital. As these fill up, what then?

It is obvious that some sort of gateway to test and triage to appropriate and available facilities is needed and the establishment of more intermediate care facilities for infectious cases must be rapidly established in anticipation for this need. I believe it is 80% will have mild cases and can be taken care of at home. 20% will need some kind of nursing care.

Appropriate emergency legislation must be passed at this point to override initial NIMBY blocking because this will eventually be in everyone's back yard.

I would like to preface this by saying it was a simple conversation directed to me in light of my health history...all really common sense...nothing I did not already know from being a member here...;) Of course you all need to give yourselves a good pat on the back for being THE GREATEST! OK... I had a dr. appt. this morning. Asked her about corona virus...if there was anything I should do and be aware of. She said to work at building my immune system up as much as possible... take vitamin C and D3, for me large doses because of my bad lungs. Eat healthy. Take personal cares seriously, ie: hand cleanliness, no touching of mouth, face, eyes, etc. Use hand sanitizer. Wash hands really well frequently. DO NOT go to any airport or fly, train station or ride the train, bus depot or ride the bus. Stay away from any friends, family that has been in any of these modes of travel; stay away from crowds if possible, including sports events, church, etc. She mentioned masks may or may not help if you need to be in a crowd, because of different mask purposes and quality. She said there is so very little we know about this virus strain that she just cannot give me any better advice at this point. She did say that in her doctors grapevine there were rummers of possible vaccine later this year...but not to really count on it. Went to health food store...got my C and D3, and some elderberry dummies. ( Darn computer keeps putting a d on that word...won't leave a g on it.) Went to grocery store and picked up a few things. No empty places on shelves...no crowds...all seemed normal. Take it for what it's worth. :)

MAYFLOWER, Ark. – A local courtroom has been cleared by order of a judge after a woman reportedly claimed to have possibly been exposed to the coronavirus.
It happened Wednesday morning at the local district court.
The Mayflower Police Department issued this post on its Facebook page early Wednesday afternoon:
“The Faulkner County District Court in Mayflower was ordered to be evacuated by the Judge this morning due to a female who made claims that she may have potentially been exposed to the Coronavirus during a commercial flight. Medical Personnel are on scene and Ashmore Drive is shut down until further notice. At this time we have no reason to be believe the public is in any danger. The State Health Department is also involved. Thank you all for the multiple calls of concern. If any additional concerns that the public needs to be made aware of arises, we will get that information out ASAP. Have a great day!”
The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) has released this statement about the incident:
“ADH is aware of the situation in Mayflower. We are working with health care providers to assess the person to determine if they have a communicable disease. Our process is to gather information from the patient and health care provider to determine if a patient has symptoms, and if they do, when those symptom started and if there is any travel history. We also encourage evaluation for more common diseases, such as the flu. Those considered at risk for Covid-19 have traveled to areas of concern within 14 days, or have been in close contact with someone who has traveled to areas of concern and developed symptoms within the last 14 days. There are currently no confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the state. If there is a risk to Arkansans being exposed to the virus here, we will communicate that as quickly as possible.”

Update:
MAYFLOWER, Ark. — The Mayflower Police Department has confirmed that the female who caused concern during a court session earlier today has been cleared of having the Coronavirus.

Dr. Mike Hansen (in that last clip a few pages back - I think,) said that studies failed to show that Vit C had any preventive or therapeutic effect on the flu, and could cause kidney stones.

From a previous post, I went to Vitamin C Foundation.

Just purchased bottles of Vitamin C Powder Bottles
World's Finest Vitamin C Powder (300 g) w/Quali-C®
Cost of 14c/gram. Product made in Scotland from European countries.

Snip from Hannity's opening segment.

Some company is shipping a first trial of covid vaccine for government testing.

He may have said trials on humans, but not sure.

FWIW
Dr. Faucci just testified that they will be ready to do initial testing on humans in a few weeks. This is phase 2 (after mice) which involves only a small number of people (around 45.) There is still another step of testing up to a thousand people, which takes up to a year. Then it needs to be manufactured.

Whether or not this virus infects many in our country, it has been our experience that being stocked with food and other necessities always pays off. It may be a job loss, natural disaster or other personal emergency or it may just be a hedge against rising prices or unavailable items, but it’s always a wise thing to do. No panic here, just determination to not be caught unaware.

Amen, Deena.

About five years ago, DH and I were away from home at our little rural cabin when he suffered a heart attack. He was too unstable to transport back to our metro home, and wound up having a triple bypass at a regional semi-rural hospital that just happened to have a top-flight heart facility. We were not able to leave the cabin for nearly a month.

Having ample preps, including food, meds, and a little bit of cash on hand, kept a bad situation from becoming monumentally devastating--and kept me, as caregiver to a seriously damaged individual, from completely losing my mind. Our preps were and are carefully chosen, acquired a bit at a time at the best available price, and consistently rotated. I will always remain prepped to the fullest extent my health and finances allow.

Yes, this bug is worse than the Flu. Yes, it will cause suffering and disruption. Yes, it will re-shape our political and social behavior a bit. It is not, however, going to be TEOTWAWKI.
... unless it morphs, mutates, and moves on up to the Eastside.

THANK YOU MARSH.

Guys, ANYONE who understands the steps in generating AND TESTING a vax understands that we STILL have to do Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 testing AND EVALUATE THOSE TESTS.

AND THEN we need to test for both safety AND EFFICACY which usually means exposure to the disease for the efficacy testing, and 1000 for the safety testing... And THAT means about a year and a half if done RIGHT.

And BY GOD don't even THINK the FDA is going to do anything more than standard fast tracking the tests. That 1.5 year estimate IS fast tracked.

One point that I have made before is that it really isn't the mortality rate that is so concerning about this virus. Lets say for argument's sake that it is 5%. Our best estimate is that his thing has a 60-70% attack rate. In this coungry lets say we are better off and go with half that--35%.

Thats 122 million infections. Overall consistent breakdown of case loads has been that 15-20% will need inpatient medical care of some form. Lets say that due to better hygeine, vaccinations, education and diet we can cut that in half to say 10%. That is 12.2 million cases that will require hospitalization or more intensive management such as antibiotics, fluids, supplemental oxygen, etc. Of those 12.2 million cases, roughly 10-15% will require ICU care with mechanical ventilation or ECMO. Lets go with the lower number there of 10%. 1.22 million americans would need ventilators. The existing mortality of those on vent is around 67%. Wihout vent and in ARDS That number will go to, at a minimum, 80-90%.

There are between 900,000 and 1 million hospital beds in total in the United States. Of those, roughly 80,000 are ICU beds. There are roughly 65,000 mechanical ventilators in the US.

So, using those numbers what is the impact?

You have 1/3rd of the US missing work, missing mortgage and car payements, and clogging up health care systems. 12 million of them will need intervention, be we only have beds for roughly 7-8%. Those who are not admitted will have to use oxygen at home (If it is available) and will be much more prone to infect others and experience seconary infections. The eventual rate of death of these will not be unsubstantial. Of those, 1.22 milion will need ventilators. Just short of 1 million of them will likely die because there are no ventilators available.

Why those numbers could be too optomistic:

1. The supply chain disruptions will seriously impact healthcare above and beyond the demands from Covid. Without medications, supplies, PPE the entire system will come to a stop. No surgeries, no chemotherapy, no heart medication, insulin, BP meds, etc. Not only will this cause their own, higher morbidity/mortality it will increase the attack rate and poor outcomes of those co-infected with Covid.
2. Economic problems have the potential to lead to food shortages, predatory lending, and unrest. Recent articles I have read were saying that 1/3rd of americans--regardless of income up to 200,000/year, run out of money before the end of the month. This would indicate that they have no savings/reserves and mandatory quarantine and the stop of those needed paychecks will cause shortages and defaults. This will ripple through the system.
3. Federal bailouts of the financial system will likely lead to unrest. We bailed them out in 2008. It is unlikely that if we bail them out in 2020 and a large part of population suffering without a "bailout" will simply not tolerate it.
4. The entire health system will collapse under the cost of treatment of millions. Insurers will decline payment because the infection is an "act of God" or will simply go bankrupt. The ramifications of this are clear--it will be taken over by the federal government.
5. We are only talking about Covid here. not heart disease, trauma, cancer, COPD, diabetes, etc. Those cases all need care as well.

4. . "The entire health system will collapse under the cost of treatment of millions. Insurers will decline payment because the infection is an "act of God" or will simply go bankrupt. The ramifications of this are clear--it will be taken over by the federal government."

Which is to say, were effectively gonna end up with the equivalent of the NHS, sooner or later. Right?

Congressman Ruiz just got to the heart of the matter. The County of Riverside Public Health fronted services - including feeding - of Wuhan evacuees. There is not yet a way to rapidly reimburse them for theses funds outside of regular emergency funds already allotted.

That money has got to flow directly to the counties in rapid fashion.

A note about universities and spring break. UT in Austin has told students they are not allowed to travel to Asia and return to school. They will have to be quarantined if they go and come back.

Separately, Austin is not canceling SXSW.
Ah, SXSW. Then forgotten about that 1. Technically, I wouldn't consider it part of Spring break. But it certainly is a chance for a lot of the young techies to get infected.

New data from China buttress fears about high coronavirus fatality rate, WHO expert says
A case fatality rate of between 2% to 4% rivals and even exceeds that of the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, which is estimated to have killed upwards of 50 million people. Even a case fatality rate of 0.7% — which means 7 out of every 1,000 infected people would die — is sobering. It is seven times the fatality rate for seasonal flu, which is estimated to kill between 290,000 and 650,000 people a year globally.

So... 7 billion people in the world. Harvard research says up to 70% will catch this which is 4.9 billion people. A 4% fatality rate and we could see 196 million deaths from this...

I just can not keep up with this thread. I just don't have time every day to devote to it but I need to keep up with the news. Does anyone recommend another news source that is devoted to what is happening with the virus that I can check everyday? I need something that I can check and get a quick daily update on just the hard facts and not spend hours. Would Bannon's broadcast fit the bill? Any good twitter accounts?
