This thread is not about panic, our contributors are newsgathering, trying to discern fact from fiction, and everyone is PREPPING.
PREPPING IS NOT PANICKING.
I know that from the start of this thread, many of us have tried to bring quality, evidence-based sources of information to the attention of the board. I, for one, have learned a lot more about disease, this virus, China and the supply chain. It has been fascinating and exciting.

Once my cup is relatively saturated with information, I have a tendency to move into action quickly. It has always been my nature. Not panic, urgency to put myself in a better position to receive what is coming at me.

Pride comes before the fall.....Pride month ended.
All things considered, I had no problem to speak of with this press conference, other than the fact they are not telling the people the whole truth. Like a real death toll out of China, and that they really can't contain it. But from the perspective of keeping the people from panicking, urging preparedness, basics, demeanor, I think this was fine. The tune will be changing soon, and they left that path open, clearly. Baby steps I guess. Not much anyone can do but prepare for isolation, potential food shortages and violence. Shore up some meds if you need them or can get them.

I'd of rather he had come out and said the truth though. Certainly no game changer as to the election. It was not a read my lips moment at all. Just a press conference to reassure the public. He likely achieved this, and hopefully those paying attention do prepare, though most have no idea what that truly means.

Decoupling Accelerates: Google And Microsoft Shift Production From China

Wednesday, 02/26/2020 - 23:05

Earlier this month, we mentioned how the Covid-19 outbreak would force companies with high centration of supply chains in China to "rework" operations to other countries to avoid future disruptions.

Nikkei Asian Review confirmed our thoughts on Wednesday when sources said Google and Microsoft, who are currently experiencing supply chain disruptions in China, will shift production of their phones, computers, and other devices to factories in Vietnam and Thailand in the coming months.

Two sources with direct knowledge of the shift said Google would begin production of its Pixel 4A smartphone in northern Vietnam in April. The Pixel 5 will start production in 2H20 in the Southeast Asian nation.

Google asked a manufacturing partner in Thailand to immediately start production of its "smart home" related products, with expected delivery no later than 1H20, one source said.

Microsoft could have production online of its Surface devices, notebooks, and desktop computers in northern Vietnam sometime in 2Q, another two sources said. "The volume in Vietnam would be small at the beginning, but the output will pick up, and this is the direction that Microsoft wants," a supply chain executive told Nikkei.

Google smartphones and Microsoft computers are mostly manufactured in China. From trade wars to virus impacts, the overreliance and high concentration of supply chains have left both firms in shock after production was recently halted as economic paralysis in China develops factory shutdowns. These firms are learning the hard way of overexposure of a supply chain to one particular geographical region.
"The unexpected coronavirus hit will definitely push electronics builders to further seek production capacity outside their most cost-effective production base of China," a supply chain executive said. "No one could ignore risks after this. ... It's more than just cost -- it's about the continuity of supply chain management."
Another source indicated that Google had asked suppliers to send production equipment from China to Vietnam as quickly as possible.

Microsoft also accelerated efforts to shift production to Vietnam after the virus outbreak became more severe earlier this month, the source added.

As we've noted, Apple has a tremendous overexposure of their supply chain to China and will find it challenging to shift lines – this means shortages of iPhones and Airpods could be seen in the coming months.

But here's the dilemma, even if Google and Microsoft move production lines to Vietnam and Thailand, many of the parts used in their products are from China. The next obstacle that both companies have to overcome is finding alternative suppliers.
"It's reasonable for companies like Google to want to speed up its pace of diversifying from China amid the coronavirus threat, while the trade war remains an uncertainty. But even if the final assembly process is outside of China, suppliers still need to ship some components from the country. ... It's a matter of the supply chain ecosystem, which takes time to rebuild," IDC tech analyst Joey Yen told Nikkei.
It remains to be seen just how significant the impact of the epidemic on Google and Microsoft will be, but already judging by the supply chain shifts out of China and possible supplier issues that may occur after, it seems the virus impact is going to be a full year problem.

Regarding the newly infected person in California, the one with no travel history and no (known) close contact with an infected person: Why did he/she get tested?

I thought TPTB were only testing people with travel history or known exposure? Does this mean that the testing parameters have changed and they are now testing people based upon symptoms?

I firmly believe that the CDC will not test anyone still standing upright no matter what the symptoms. They apparently even refused to test this intubated patient with clear signs of respiratory failure the first time the request was made since it did not fit their guidelines. It is no wonder that we still only have 15 confirmed cases with this type of response from the CDC.

Exactly. Zero panic here, too. I strive to share fact based information in the belief (knowledge!) that the process of successfully negotiating a crisis involves having the sense of control over ones' situation. The POV is Whatever is upon our plates, lets take a deep breath, say a prayer, roll up our sleeves and TCOB. People count on us, whether our small family units, or larger organizations and communities. I deal with my fears and tears on my own time, when there is time. But that comes later. Now, my loved ones need me to grasp the impact and see and implement mitigation strategies.

How many CoronaVirus casualties could be hidden in flu stat numbers like this...

CDC's flu numbers from October 1, 2019, through February 15, 2020,
show at least 29,000,000 flu illnesses, 280,000 flu hospitalizations, and
at least 16,000 deaths. With little testing for CoronaVirus, it's inevitable
that more than a few of these numbers above aren't seasonal flu, but CV.

Panic Early, Beat the Rush!
- Shane

Agree. If we had 3000 deaths from COVID (that's the number China is officially reporting (with a population that has 1 Billion more people than we do), it could easily be swept into the flu numbers without anyone taking notice. That's why I think this could be one possible approach the admin is taking on this. Play it down and sweep the numbers into the flu tallies. Don't test of course, because if you test, you can't call it flu if the test comes back positive, can you? So they don't test, and they say it's flu.

I do want to add that my local TV only played Pres Trump and VP Pence's statement before cutting away and I didn't have a chance to watch the q&a's until now (thank you to those who posted the youtube link to it). While I was very disappointed with his official statement which to me seemed to be along the lines of Baghdad Bob, I thought his answers were much better, much more truthful and much more presidential. I wonder who wrote his opening remarks - and why it wasn't on the teleprompter for him - which could mean it was written so fast they didn't have a time to get it up on the teleprompter. I hope they put up a transcript, there was one part where he slipped and said something hinting that it was more serious then quickly corrected himself. I can't remember what it was in reference to but I'll find it on the transcript and highlight it when it's available. And there were a few times he got political but quickly pulled himself back, which I liked because he's right, this isn't about politics and some on the stage are probably not political supporters which could make it awkward for them as they should be working as a team with politics shelved. He also touched very very quickly on supply chain and then moved along to change the subject, but I was really relieved to hear him mention it so that we know that he's aware of it, he just doesn't want to discuss it. And I like that he blamed some of the market downturn on the dem debate because I do think Bernie winning Nev so handily did have some effect on the markets, and it was only the liberal communist news that tried to shift all the blame for the losses to COVID and not to investors knowing how bad a Bernie presidency would be for the markets.

WOO warning. Totally bonkers thought.

What if Trump ended China tonight? A Cuban Missle Crisis moment.

"My fellow Americans, I come to you tonight with troubling news. For the past several weeks we have been basing our coronavirus response on the officially reported numbers from China, the WHO, and other UN organizations.

We have discovered that this has been a series of lies. Here is satellite footage of mass graves....pictures of executions....We estimate that the actual number of cases is in the millions. These lies have not only endangered the US, but politicians and news organizations here have conspired with those forces to lie to the United States people.

We have posted on the WH website documents that show collusion between members the Democratic Party...."
I will counter your woo.
What if China faked the whole thing. What if they were all putting on a fake crisis, all the video's etc...choreographed. Then they struck us, given Russia has already stated the US was behind the virus, plausible validation for retaliation.
That's real woo.....but who knows. Perhaps it's a real virus, and a staged plot to transition to the nukes, with agreed upon targets.......as the worlds population is reduced drastically by design... So many possible storylines, though the probabilities vary greatly. He who strikes first comes out ahead, though it's a terrible reality that will follow. Unless you are in leadership, then it may just be their cup of tea.. 50 million plus aborted kids puts this idea into perspective. Evil is real.

Why now do they think India is going to weather this Pandemic better than China

I honestly don't know. Perhaps they are just grasping... Right now they are bleeding money and some of their big clients are screaming at them daily about shutting down lines... Shutting down lines seems to be a scary bad thing

OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - The first U.S. novel coronavirus case of unknown origin has been confirmed in the Bay Area, the Center for Disease Control said on Wednesday.

The patient is a Solano County resident and is being treated in Sacramento County.

According to the CDC, it's the first possible COVID-19 case of person-to-person transmission in the U.S.

Authorities said the person had not recently traveled to a foreign county or had any close contact with someone who had the virus.

It's the 15th case that was tested positive in the U.S.

The California Department of Public Health said that while the health risk from the virus to the public remains low, the state working to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Scientists have already begun the process of trying to trace the latest patient's whereabouts

This is a map of N CA. The counties in red are where those with the virus are resident. The green dot is San Francisco. My county is blue.......

I'm pretty sure that the alien lizard species that has been broadcasting radio signals from outer space to his colony under the North pole are responsible for the virus and it's world wide seeding. They have grown hungry, but have a taste for tender young flesh, so are gettin' rid of all us stringy ole geezers. Soon they will ride in on an asteroid that they'll steer into the earth to finish the job. Then they shall feast on the morsels left over, before riding off to the sunset on the next leg of their journey/ tours.
