CORONA New First Presidency letter (LDS church) urges individuals to receive COVID-19 vaccinations ‘proven to be both safe and effective’; masks encouraged

LDS believe in continual revelation via the church president. Up until last year it used to be the "Corporation of the President". However, this was changed last year to merge the Corporation of the Presiding Bishop and Corporation of the President into just "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". It was a play for the 501c. Previous to that, everything was owned by the two entities. The IRS had been hot on their trail a long time. LDS are not the only ones like this. If you look, you'll find most churches are incorporated. Most churches care more about tax status than God.
Yep, 100 billion is a juicy chunk of pie for the IRS for sure.

I’m going to have to come up with decent wording. I don’t want it to be an incoherent rant. But yeah, I really gotta write something up.
Tell him that the most charitable interpretation possible is that he is utterly outside his areas of competence and authority. Further, tell him that most people will not conclude the most charitable interpretation of his motives. "I" figure he has to be one of bribed, blackmailed, pro-commie, or (in this matter, at least) an ignorant fool. But, you may not wish to spell those out unless you're prepared to become an Independent Mormon.

Well, the president of the LDS Church is a physician and scientist. MD and PhD.

People would have to repent if they don't follow the advisement. "When our leaders speak, the thinking has been done. When they propose a plan–it is God’s plan. When they point the way, there is no other which is safe. When they give direction, it should mark the end of controversy. God works in no other way. To think otherwise, without immediate repentance, may cost one his faith, may destroy his testimony, and leave him a stranger to the kingdom of God." Free Agency is still #1...... with personal revelation from Holy Ghost. Not a contradiction as we are Urged, not Commanded, so that the world-wide church is not in contravention of the laws/rules of different countries. In our part of Canada, we are fully open and it would be silly to take a poison if we think of it that way, when there is no mandate to take the vaccine or even mask up.

What TYPE of M.D.? Most medical specializations give little background related to this after medical school and residential rotations, and those were how long ago? If the guy spent 20 years being a podiatrist, orthopedist, general surgeon, etc. (that he largely stopped doing 20 years ago to be a big shot in his church), then my position still stands. Odds are low he's a stayed-current FT virologist, immunologist, hematologist, etc.

No. They said nothing about free agency in that letter. They could have easily said "Research it. Pray about it. Ponder it. Make your decision. Use your free agency." Don't add words to it.

Brilliant as a cardiac plumber, possibly. As an epidemologist/virologist/ immunologist, going by how you said he spent his career, almost certainly not.

He's no immunologist. That's not the point here, though. The point is that this stuff is worded very legally and couched in wording to appease the government. This letter is the doing of Dallin Oaks in my opinion.

They already did previously…. This was a letter to everyone not just Americans, where some countries are having problems and others aren’t.

Of course the public perception has to be there that we all are doing what we can to curb this “disease “ but ultimately it is our own agency that controls how we act. You won’t hear him say “thus sayeth the Lord” about a vaccine

Is the plan actually handed down from God, or is actually what the human leader(s) think should be handed down, being “received” and filtered thru their own personal biases? If they’re not engraved on the Mormon equivalent of stone tablets, how to you trust it?

They didn’t mention that people are individuals with individual health risks that should be addressed with discussions with their personal physicians. That is far from incendiary.

Obviously, officially approving the "Respect for Marriage Act" makes whatever they say suspect on coming from God. The Lord does not approve of gay marriage. Mike Lee was correct in his assessment of this Act. Lee went against the church on this one. Meanwhile, Romney voted for the mess, stepping in line with the church. The Act indeed does not do enough to protect churches. Other churches came out against it. LDS could have just not commented but they chose to offer their full kudos to the legislation.

So the first action of the Mormon head is to give orders to murder his followers? The new religious motto must be Follow Jesus and ignore man. Of course that may trigger arguments about whether
Mormons follow Jesus or not.

You have to love this line from the letter...

"We can win this war if everyone will follow the wise and thoughtful recommendations of medical experts and government leaders."

It's anything but wise and thoughtful.
Yeah!
It's more like "get with the damn program, you peons!"

Coffee? Uh-oh….I’m in trouble for sure. /snickers

Yeah but this from a group that thinks alcohol, tobacco, and coffee are evil? Who woulda thunk?
Well, I don't think most LDS look at coffee, tea, tobacco, and alcohol as evil. Things aren't evil. Things may not be good for one to consume. In this case, it's more a dietary law that comes into play rather than something being evil. The temperance movement started early on in America for sure and even plenty of Baptists abstain from it, of which Joseph Smith was fully aware of it. Coffee and tea...well caffeine is addictive but that's not the reason for banning it for LDS members. Tobacco. I can't even see any benefit of smoking or chewing.

One of the things that I hate about many churches today is that it's essentially coffee churches. They even have coffee bars at church. People bring in their giant coffees into the chapel and they often get spilled. What a mess. People can't go 5 minutes without a big gulp or a latte. That's addictive. For LDS, I recall a family member at the LDS Church Office Building, in SLC. She said the head honchos had flunkees go out to the convenience stores nearby and get them big gulps of caffeinated pop. So, it's not the caffeine. It's the dietary law. I have seen plenty of LDS missionaries return from South America hooked on yerba mate.

Perhaps it is time to make some evaluations of affiliations one has.
Given the times we are living in, we may want to read the Revelation given to us, especially those first few chapters.
