I love cats. They can be so funny, so loving, so brave.

That one in the vid is spectacular.. man, he hit that big dog like a ton of bricks. Then slid to a stop and went back to his kid.

I just posted this to facebook, I had a rescue Main Coon that did the same move on a huge dog that was about to eat the tiny kitten she had adopted, in that case she racked his eyeballs and the dog dropped the kitten, "Momma Cat" grabbed it in her mouth and ran - I saw the whole thing from a distance too far to do anything and I didn't need to. This kitty has adopted this little boy as her "kitten" too and risked her life to save him - good kitty - some cats will do this sort of thing, it just isn't "trainable" the way it is with dogs. Some of the Orientals can be trained (Siamese) because they were bred to be temple guardians and are more "dog like" in that way, but most cats it is just something that either comes with the cat or it doesn't; when it does it is usually and extension of maternal behavior (even if the cat is male).

Sorry if I make the owners of same mad here, but ---

wasn't that a pit bull?

Thank God the child wasn't KILLED---just in the few SECONDS the dog had at him, he managed to make those deep gashes in his leg and the cuts required STITCHES.

GOD BLESS THAT CAT!!!!!!

Poor kid. I'm guessing that's going to be a cat family henceforth. Great job, kitty! Better give that cat lots of loves and some real meat, cut into small pieces. I was appalled at how badly the kid's leg was trashed in just those few seconds. Hope the neighborhood is on the lookout for that dog. That dog went after the kid without provocation, entered the kid's territory and attacked. Whether stray or owned, he needs to be found and put down. I'll have to look at it again, but the dog looked pretty healthy for a stray. Which might mean someone lets their dog roam -- and that someone is responsible for the injuries to the child.

does it seem strange that the video includes the dog before the attack - looks like from over the fence on the woman's property...????

I suspect that as the economy continues to tank, this is going to become more of a problem even in "nicer" areas. One of the things that happened in Ireland during the sudden crash was that people losing them homes were forced into rentals that in Ireland almost never allow pets. I mean, they just don't, not with a deposit, not for anything - rescue centers were swamped with greatly loved pets surrendered by tearful owners whose backs were up against a wall - those were the lucky pets. It hasn't been all that long here since many country people simply viewed cats as stray working animals you didn't even feed and dogs were allowed to pretty much run about doing as they pleased as "village dogs." So there were also quite lot of animals simply chucked out when the food bills got too high or the move was forced, our lovely border collie Buddy just showed up one day with bloody paws and thin as a rail. He's "The Fat Collie" now for all we try to limit his feeding, we will never know if he jumped out of someone's car or was dumped, but that was the same Summer I ended up with TWO rescue Momma cats one of whom had a second litter before she could be spayed (obviously she had gotten pregnant just after giving birth, it happens).

Stray dogs are one of the serious dangers that tend to be much over-rated by people not living in rural areas because the subject usually doesn't come up and when it does people think of the poor little lost puppy; not the pack of escaped pets gone feral ready to eat your house-cat or attack your child. This dog acted alone, but he did it very fast and I suspect was an accomplished killer of other animals (cats, smaller dogs, rabbits etc); if there had been more than one dog the cat might have distracted the dogs (and died for it) but seriously would have been unlikely to be able to run them off. We'd either not being seeing the video at all, or bits of it with calls for donations to the local cat shelter in the name of the "hero kitty." If there were more than two dogs, both the cat and the child would probably have died, and the Mother been badly injured herself (or worse).

This has only been a minor problem in rural Ireland because out here, it is perfectly legal for farmers to shoot loose dogs they fear my be a danger to livestock and Buddy is safe only because the local farmers all know him and know he is harmless. He is also impossible to contain being able to leap, jump or climb anything and that's the problem; back when he was a stray if he had teamed up with other wild dogs, they could have destroyed chickens in minutes and lambs nearly as fast.

But right after the crash, that Spring there was a serious increase in wild dog packs here in the countryside before they were culled; this problem is likely to get worse in the US, before it gets better (sadly) though I would not have expected it either in such an obviously quiet area.

I'm impressed by the cats tenacity and courage.

After watching the video, the dog needs to be put down. It stalked and then attacked the kid, which may or may not be the dog's fault but it will still pay the price.

I thought that was odd, too. I'm guessing they had multiple security cams and just spliced the clips together, post event.

If it's not a stray, it's gonna suck to be the dog's owner. Video went majorly viral, so they'd be a national villain.

Would *I* Lie???
Wow, that cat was NOT new to dogs! He hit that thing with ALL FOUR PAWS AND STUCK... then when he dropped for a minute and the dog bolted.. the cat is literally spinning his feet like looney-tunes to get a grip on the grass/concrete.. that cat was PIIIISSED... Then comes back and checks on kid.

BAKERSFIELD - A cat came to her best friend's rescue Tuesday when a young boy was attacked by a dog in his driveway in Southwest Bakersfield and it was all caught on video.

The surveillance video shows the boy, 4-year-old Jeremy, playing on his bicycle. He was coming home from school when he wanted to fly a kite. Jeremy has mild autism.

The neighbor's dog, an 8-month-old labrador/chow mix, sneaks up behind him and bites his leg.

The family's cat, named Tara, rushes the attacking dog and chased it away.

"Tara is my hero," Jeremy said.

Erika Triantafilo, Jeremy's mother, was nearby watering a tree when she heard his screams.

"I didn't really even realize what had happened until after when my husband showed me the surveillance video," Erika said.

Erika told 23ABC the boy needed a few stitches, but he is doing fine. Erika said it could have been much worse.

"I've never seen a cat do that," said Roger Triantafilo, Jeremy's father said. "Especially ours. It just shows how much she really has a family-oriented mind set."

Tara became a part of the Triantafilo family in 2008. She loves to be pet and comes when called.

She also said the dog belonged to a neighbor and is now under voluntary observation at Bakersfield Animal Care Center.

Sgt. Joe Grubbs, Bakersfield Police spokesman, said the dog will be quarantined for 10 days then euthanized.

The neighbor was pulling their vehicle out of their gated driveway when the dog escaped.

The neighbor called 911 on behalf of the boy and his mother.

Yeah, don't mess with a pissed-off kitty. A 10lb cat can be an equal match to a 160LB full grown man (ask me how I know). That dog had no chance once the cat decided to "let 'er rip."

The dog clearly stalks the child. It looks under the car spotting the boy, then goes around and attacks him, dragging him off his bike and pulling/jerking him down the driveway by the leg. Then marvelous Super Kat attacks the dog. Dog retreats. Mom hears the commotion, comes to help, then somehow knows the dog is still nearby and tries to run it off. I thought that I read that she had also been bitten.

I hope that the boy is not emotionally scarred by this attack.

the video looks to be from multiple vantage points so I'm thinking security cameras. I'm betting there's some maine coon in that cat. I'd be feeding the cat fresh dog for dinner!!!

Yikes on the poor dog, only eight months old and getting the needle already. Kuddos to the cat.

The little boy has autism, dog senses there isn't something right with boy and proceeds to remove him from the gene pool. This is what predators do, they prey on the weak, infirm, aged, and disabled.

Never seen anything like it. That cat should be eating out of a crystal goblet for the rest of it's days.

And it does look like it is a pit terrier mix.

I believe it was the ancient Egyptians and Tibetan monks that used cats for protecting things. A cat will dig in and not give up, but a dog can be beaten off.

Preppers, good analogy by our Melodi...... Hopefully, the future will be kinder; however, the point is well made about being thoughtful of what possibilities we might all face with feral animals..... Just Sayin.

From the fathers YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-Opm9b2WDk

My cat defends my son during a vicious dog attack and runs the dog off before he can do additional damage. Thankfully, my son is fine!

Question: Why did the mom run away?
Answer: After checking his wounds she made sure the dog did not return for a second attempt. The owners were there also and she was bit by the dog as she tried to pin him in his yard. The owners did get control of the dog and secured him in which she immediately returned to attending to our son. I did not include that video because it was not so much about the dog but about the cats actions.

Nice kitty. I would have let go when the cat started going crazy. That was the first thing to come to mind the first time I watched this video.
