Heat index has us at 106, today. No rain in sight. Cary was out watering all my roses while I gathered more bell peppers first thing this morning. I've got all the peppers chopped and in the freezer. I only got a quart bag this time, but I've already put up 3 gallons. This should be enough to last til planting time again next spring. If not, I'll use dehydrated. I use both depending on what I'm cooking. Sometimes, only fresh frozen will do.

This week is forecast to be our hottest days, yet. Over 100 every day for plain air temperatures. No rain at least for the next 8 days. It's so dry that I don't know if a heat index will factor in or not. We have no plans for work outside all week. Tuesday, we're going to visit Mom. She just got back from her 2 week trip to visit her sister in Alabama. She had a birthday and turned 83 yrs. old while she was there.

No home fellowship today. It's our "off" week. In spite of the heat, I'm cooking tonight. The tuna salad sandwiches were good last night, but I just can't eat a sandwich every meal. Meatloaf is on the menu for tonight.

Wishing All a very blessed week ahead!

Thanks, Briches - I sat down to start the thread this morning and got distracted filling hummingbird feeders, then watering the sweet potatoes, which led to the garden, which led to picking tomatoes and beans, which led to pulling weeds - and just now got back inside so I'll just do a bit of cut and paste of what I'd already typed and add on a bit

Good Morning, All
:)

It's a pretty morning here for late August - 66* F (now 74*F) , and cloudy, with a very nice breeze from the east/southeast. Sadly, this pretty morning weather isn't supposed to last long - we've now got thunderstorms predicted in the next hour or so (oh joy, muddy football gear) and I'm going to be one cranky Granny by 5 pm when middle grandson's Junior Football League game starts - it's supposed to be 93*F with a heat index of 106*F then - which is at least a lower temp than the forecast said last night. Needing to work in the heat and having temperature appropriate clothing on while doing so is one thing - playing a game in tight spandex clothing, pads, and a helmet is something else altogether. Daughter will probably make me stay home because I doubt I'll be able to keep myself completely quiet on the subject. I do think I'll print out multiple copies of our home-made sports drink/hydration beverage recipe and give them to daughter to pass out when she bans me from the field

Rant over. (Maybe) I know that I should be grateful that the temps are dropping down into the 60's and 70's at night. I remember when I was a child that we'd turn the smaller window fans in the bedrooms around at night to pull the cool night air in - and wake up under a chilly, clammy sheet from the dew being pulled in along with the early morning air  The big 'whole house' fan was always in a window on the shady side of the house and it mostly kept things tolerable. We did get a window air conditioner when I was about 10, which kept the two bedrooms we used cooler than outside at least.

The hummingbirds are hitting the feeders hard this morning - I've got 5 or 6 birds on each feeder and more waiting to land and feed. I had the hose running at low pressure in the sweet potato bed I have growing in a leaky old water tank as it was looking a bit droopy last evening. I went out to pick tomatoes and ended up doing a bunch of weeding while I was out there. I think the green and yellow beans have pretty much given up the ghost at setting on more beans, but I have several crock pot size bags of them in the freezer so we will get by. I'll pick the dried beans and use them for seed next year. I'm going to need to pick grapes here soon as well - they'll get rinsed and sent to freezer camp until the weather cools a bit, then I'll run them through the steam juicer.

Well, I'd better get headed to the shower now that I'm cooled off enough that it's not a shock to step in.

Take care all; stay safe out there!

Headed to visit youngest son for the day. We will do dinner out l am sure. Looking forward to the time together. It’s going to be a hot one, but not as hot as you are experiencing. I will also be catching up with oldest son this week to get dinner together. :rs:

As far as preps go, slow and steady will continue for me. Plans are just to replace what we are using.

Tomatoes are coming in strong so lots of tomato sandwiches and BLTs in our future. Yum.

I was up at the crack of dawn. Another layer of paint. Then fixing a trellis. Then inside to do the final removals from the old fridge and get it unplugged.

And then the delivery guys... Who called and said they were on their way and would be here in 45 minutes, and arrived two hours later. Then charged extra because they were going to have to remove the doors to get the old one out and the new one in. Then tried to convince me that they should just put the old one up by the road rather than haul it away like I paid for. Then stood there in front of me and discussed dumping it in the dumpster for the apartment complex across the street. And when I explained that the apartment complex would have issues with that, they tossed it all in the back without anchoring it down, which made it very clear that they just planned on dumping it.

So currently chatting with Lowe's. First, because of the fee and then second because of the haul away nonsense. And it turns out that there is not supposed to be a fee for removing/reinstalling doors when I paid for delivery and haul away. And so Lowe's is giving me a refund for the haul away fee and having a discussion with the delivery company. And they are really pissed about the extra fee, especially after I explained that they had wanted only cash or check. And that I would have had no proof whatsoever if I had cash on hand. But I couldn't find where I had put my cash when I cleaned my purse last night. And I guess I'll keep a tight eye on the checking account this week. I may reach out to the bank to have them change the account information.

Anyways, I'm about to go start putting things in the new fridge. I did "splurge" and order an air filter. There are apparently charcoal air filters that are designed to fit in. And they aren't expensive. And while it is supposedly the same fridge as my old one, there are design changes and I'm going to have to figure out the spaces.

Son stayed hidden while the delivery guys were here. He doesn't do strangers well, much less strangers in his space.

But then he was avoiding the kitchen. New fridge. New color. He was unsure. Large items changing make him very nervous. There was a mini crying storm and a nap. I left it alone.

And then when he woke back up, I had him come in and open it. So he could see everything he knew inside. And know that it was all okay. And he found his tea. And then he wanted tickles and raspberries. Because the world is all good again.

I was hoping otherwise but the absolute disaster someone made of a client's books on Friday has become my mess to clean up today. Ugh. Duplicate accounts, duplicate bills, duplicate payments. Having to hunt down copies of the original invoices/bills/receipts because the mistake deleted the originals. Every time I fix one thing I find multiple other parts that are affected. Including that it decreased a customer invoice by $10,000. I'm about halfway through the cleanup now. Well, probably more like a third. Because after I fix everything I already see, I have to dive into the expense accounts and see if there are a few things that I can't see already.

I'm done for the day. My eyes are crossing and the eyeballs themselves are hurting.

On the positive side... I have a working fridge. And there is something going on mentally that I'm just grasping at the edges of about I have a new working fridge that I picked out, and I'm paying for, and it's mine.

Okay. Free again.

I have discovered over the last year, that I'm really, really tired of the messy pile in that occurs in freezers. My deep freezes have been organized. I'm seriously considering getting a second shelf for the freezer section of the fridge. And some more trays. That way most of the items can be tucked in neatly and I can, hopefully, easily find what I need. And random things won't become lost in the depths.

I found a lot of "lost in the depths" when I had to clean out the freezer. Not so much so in the fridge because I had already made changes in there that had most things in a very organized manner. I do need to get two small plastic trays for holding the butters, and the misc small things, that used to be contained in a compartment the old fridge had that this one doesn't. I don't want things falling over, or rolling under, or otherwise disappearing from sight.

I cannot breathe outside when it's so hot and humid. I got into the garden early and back inside before 8:30. Lots of cucumbers and summer squash which I'm trying to give away!! I checked my shelves and found six pints of bread and butter pickles dated 2013 so pulled them to dump and will not be making more. I need to check as there may be part of a jar lurking in the depths of the fridge. Still getting cherry tomatoes by the dishpan full but today also picked 4 yellow slicers and my first Box Car Willy. All still need a day or two to finish ripening.

Last year the yellow tomatoes were last by far to ripen, but this year are first. Why do these strange things happen.

The sweet potato vines have filled the fenced area around them and I saw a rabbit nibbling on anything that protruded through the fence. Chased off the rabbit and put all vines back inside the fence.

I think I made a mistake this a.m. -- I cleaned out one section of the deep freeze, bagged up the stuff and put it into the garage -- the mistake is temps nearing 100º today and for the next several days. Garbage collection is not until Friday!! Everything is in plastic freezer bags, plus double garbage bags still I'm concerned about leaking and smell. A lot of stuff is 10+ years old. I also found two turkeys in the very bottom and have no idea how old they are. I'm thinking that when temps cool down, I will thaw them and, if they appear and smell okay, cook them. On the other hand, maybe, it would be best to donate them to the garbage collection on Friday. Comments?? I also found a turkey breast that I bought last Thanksgiving so that will be staying. I now have room for flour once I finish with the defrost and clean stage.

My freezer has three baskets that you're supposed to be able to slide but the "slide" areas are full, so I always have to lift out the baskets. I'm planning to fix that once everything is done. I still have 3 sections plus the slide areas to go through as well as the three baskets before I can defrost and clean. My mind is already busy trying to decide how I'm going to arrange things.

Do any of you have deep freezers in your unheated/uncooled garages or sheds? Do they work okay in such environments? I do not have room upstairs for a freezer but would like one not in the basement. It seems a bit silly for me to have two freezers so guess I could consider moving the one from the basement to the garage. Temps here vary from 100º in the summer to -30º in the winter. Both are extremes but do happen so have to be considered.

I used a 6 year old commercial turkey (shrink-wrapped in that heavy plastic they sell them in, but not overwrapped) for soup... I roasted it first, to get the rich, browned turkey flavor, then used the entire thing for soup. I cut up the breast meat and added it back to the nearly finished soup, but gave most of the rest (deboned) to the dogs. It was fine.

Newer freezers DO NOT work when it get much below 20°F. Older ones (different refrigerants) used to work in unheated outbuildings, even in bitter cold temps.

It turned off miserably hot and humid this afternoon. It was a lovely 78*F when the neighbor and I went to the pool around 9am; 85* when we headed home, and a hot and humid 94* when I went out to refill the hummingbird feeders an hour later. I needed to pull weeds but that has gone by the wayside as we're looking at 97*, 101* and 105* for the next three day's high temp, before cooling back down into the low 90's, with overnight temps in the 70's. I'll keep busy filling bird and bee feeders, watering plants, and making sure the cats have plenty of water.

I'd picked up a bag of ice on the way home from the pool as I knew I needed to do something with all the tomatoes that were taking over my kitchen island. I did have my small stockpot boiling for a bit to scald the tomatoes in preps for peeling them prior to freezing, so used part of the ice to chill them after they came out of the boiling water; the other half I put in the cooler to help chill down the bags of tomatoes prior to putting them in the freezer. I put 8 quart bags of peeled and quartered and mostly seeded tomatoes in the freezer - they will be nice to have to add to spaghetti sauce, soups and cassaroles this winter. Now to convince myself to make another trip out to the garden early tomorrow morning... I'll probably pick grapes first though - they are trellised on the west porch so it will be nice and shady. The elderberries are also ripe so I'll take the buggy down to the waterway between the two fields. Both the grapes and elderberries will go in the steam juicer, eventually - but will go in the freezer until it cools down.

Has anyone tried the new Kitty Litter called Pretty Litter? I've seen ads, then I saw it at Wal-Mart so picked up a bag. I used the bottom portion of a storage tote that was 2'x4' for the tray. There is no odor so far- it's silica. The litter encapsulates the urine, and the feces is easy to scoop. It's supposed to be good for a month or more - hard to believe, I know. It also has something in the litter that changes color if your cat is having a medical issue. The only issue I've found so far is that it must stick to the cats' feet as it tracks on to the floor so sweeping two or three times a day is a neccesity. I'm going to put an old rug next to the tote and see if that helps with the tracking some.

Well, I've got a couple of loads of laundry laid out on the bed that I need to get folded and put away - I guess if I want to have room to sleep I'd better get it done

Take care all; stay safe out there!

@anna43 The last freezer we bought, an upright was ”garage ready”. I believe you can get a kit to make freezers garage ready but I have no idea at the cost or how much work it would involve. I do know when we used to have a chest freezer in a shed it had to work a lot harder especially in our hot summers and it didn’t last as long as it should have. I’m sure the cold temps was hard on it to, but the heat was probably the worse.

Another scorcher, today. Nothing outside is moving because of the heat. So, we're going to visit Mom, and Cary wants to look at new tires for his Jeep while we're there in town. He knows the guy who owns the tire store in town, so he always does business with him when he can. They worked together for a few years a while back. I know his wife really well. Have known her since first grade.

Both of my chest freezers are in the laundry room, so its temp controlled in there. Mom has 3 chest freezers, and none of them are temp controlled. One is in an outdoor storage shed, and the other 2 are in her laundry room which isn't temp controlled. It's stays shut off from the rest of her house. I imagine all of them have to work harder in the kind of heat we have down here.

We're hoping the guy comes to cut our tree next week. With this heat, it's really looking bad. No rain in sight.

Hot and no rain in sight. Although its looking like "maybe" in the high 90's next week, even that would be a relief.

Picking up commodities today, as usual, it will be interesting to see what we are given.

The ribs and cobbler were a big hit yesterday. Since I'm having so much trouble finding something that DH will eat I'm thinking about buying a box of frozen hamburger patties. I'll have to look at the box to see what all is in the meat before I buy it though. He is so picky.

Cary absolutely loved the apple cobbler recipe you use, Judy. 2 cans of apple pie filling, one box of yellow cake mix, and butter drizzled over the top. He's looking forward to me making a peach one, next. I'm having trouble finding peach pie filling.

I think Cary could live off of a good hamburger. I don't buy those frozen in a box. I don't know what all is in them, either. I buy the grass fed, all natural, ground chuck, 1/4 lb burger patties from the beef section at Walmart. I get the 4 patty packages, but you can get them with 6 or 12 patties also. Cary likes hamburger steaks made from them, too.

Wake up at a little after 2:30 am to someone trying to break into the house. Then they stopped because neighbor came outside to head to work. I went outside, armed, to take a look around. Didn't see anyone in the yard or hiding in the shrubs. Did see someone walking off just past the shrubs. Left it alone and came back inside. Pretended everything was okay, shut off the lights, went back to bed.

Son was awake so he got up to use the bathroom. Multiple times. This is normal for him. Then he settled for a bit. I heard someone back again and was about to call it in when son got up to go to the bathroom yet again. Note, son is oblivious to all of this. But person apparently decided that two close calls was enough and didn't try again. I'll call the non emergency number later today and ask them to do drive bys for the next few nights. And I'm looking at two more cameras that will cover that side of the house and can be mounted outside. I have one mounted on the window inside but it only covers the vehicle.

End result was that it took me almost two hours to settle down enough to sleep. I needed the extended awake time to be sure whoever it was wasn't going to try a third time. They wouldn't have liked the results. And I was dragging this morning. I went out and got some painting done. Fixed the trellis again. Looked around the area. It looks like they were trying the bathroom window which also matches where I was hearing the noise. Scuffed up mulch there.

Now off to work, and fix more of the mess.

I don't know why this isn't stressing me more. But it's not. Called the cops on the non emergency number to ask for extra drivebys. The guy on the phone couldn't understand why I wasn't panicked and why I didn't call last night. Even though there was nothing I could have told them and nothing they could have done. I couldn't ID anyone and I didn't have any video. But he insisted that I needed to have them do a report. Which made it all that much more amusing when the cop that showed up made it clear that he thought the same thing that I did. I told him I figured it was someone stupid and high. And that I was just asking for a driveby or two when they were in the area. I'm only about 4 blocks from the station.

And I looked at cameras for the system I have. The ones I want are currently out of stock. So I'll keep an eye and grab them when they are available again. They have video quality that would hold up in court if needed. Two will go outside with crisscross view of that side yard. And one will window mount inside my bedroom. I already have the window mount, I just need to get it installed. I may just save and get the four pack and figure out how to mount one for the front yard, and back at the garage doors. I did get the unpleasant reminder that if they don't have an SD card, they won't record even if I am live viewing. So that will need to be fixed as well.

I haven't really used these for security. They main reason for having them was to be able to see my son when I am working outside, so that I can see if he's having a seizure. But I guess my little town is growing up in a not good way, so it's time to get security in place.

We had a great visit with Mom. She had to show me all her new shoes and clothes she bought while visiting her sister. I think that's about all the two of them do is shop and party while she's there. She's like me. She loves pretty clothes and shoes, but she can afford it. I have to pinch pennies while trying to build back our savings account. I've got plenty for the time being.

Because of her age and health, she qualifies for a local commodity box each month. She gets all kinds of food in it. She had a huge box of canned goods and bags and bags of rice and egg noodles all piled up in a corner in her laundry room for me to bring home with me. I tried my best to get her to keep it, but she just doesn't get it when I tell her things are about to get very dicey where food goes. I finally talked her into keeping it and giving it to someone she knows that might be needing help right now. I agreed to bring home all the cans of turnip greens that she had. That satisfied her. I told her how much I appreciated her saving all of it for me, and I explained to her that I just didn't need it or have room for it all. She lives alone, and she doesn't think she needs too much food stored, since she eats like a cat, which is hardly anything. I can sorta understand her point, though. At 83 yrs. old, she doesn't need 20 yrs of food stored away, plus she has 3 chest freezers that she keeps full.

Cary got new tires for his Jeep and had his spare tire fixed. It was flat. He needed them. Every time he went out to go somewhere in it, he would have to air up the tires. He's been doing this for quite a while now, so it was time.

He wanted to stop at Mc D's on the way home for a double quarter pounder with cheese. So, we ate there. Bought an extra vanilla milkshake to bring home for our fur baby, since he has been outside in the heat, since we left. He loved it! It was almost melted by the time we got home but was still icy cold. He loves vanilla ice cream, LOL!

Hot. Miserably hot and humid - 94* F and the heat index is 106*. Bleah. I went down basement to feed the indoor cats this morning and found Hubby's work clothes in the washer, so hung them up - if they aren't dry by evening, I guess I'll run the dryer for a bit. His work pants are black so I don't want to hang them on the clothesline as it is out in the sun. They'd probably end up covered with honeybees looking for moisture, although I have set out several pans of water on the porch and on the picnic table under the trees in the side yard for the bees.

I went up to the nearby orchard today to get peaches - they had one peck bag and one half bushel box inside the store; not sure if they had more in the cooler or not, but there was only one person working that I saw - the rest may have been out picking while it was still halfway cool. The gentleman in front of me snagged the peck, so I took the half bushel - I'd only planned to get a peck as I didn't particularly want to work up that many at one time, but instead I guess I'll be busy in about three days or so, once they finish ripening. I usually can the peaches, but they are all going in the freezer this year - I have room enough in the chest freezer and it's just too darned hot to can them since I have the other option.

The grapes are starting to come on; I'll cut the ripe ones early tomorrow morning before the bees get active. They are going in the freezer as well - at least until it cools off enough to use the steam juicer. Looking at the forecasts, it might be Sunday before that happens (80 degrees is 'cool enough' ) Looking at the 10 day forecast, I will likely be watering the gardens and planters early tomorrow morning before the sun gets very far over the tree line.

I'm going to start working on putting meat in the freezer again; I'm low on meatloaf mix - I use it for meatloaf, meatloaf burgers, meatballs with assorted toppings like BBQ sauce, or mushroom gravy, etc... I'm also going to stock up on the chicken sausage that we like, as well as chicken breasts. Might throw a few roasts in there - we mostly use roasts to cut into chunks to make beef stew. I don't find that pork sausage lasts as well in the freezer so will not stock up on as much of it.

Welp, just got called for grandkid duty so I guess I'd better head out!

Take care all; stay safe out there!

I’ve been trying to keep up with everyone by reading posts but I haven’t been feeling good, so I haven’t posted much.

I despise this weather we’re having with a passion and I‘m sure I’d feel so much better when this heat and humidity breaks. Even staying inside with a/c I’m having trouble breathing and needing my inhaler more often.

DH has so many projects going on around here right now and of course they all involve being out in this miserable weather. He’s cutting our main hayfield today since the grass is probably as good as it’s going to be until we get some rain and lower temps which doesn’t seem likely for the time being. We’ve been keeping a close eye on the recently purchased pullets, so far so good and the new covered pen is close to being finished. We’ll still have a few more things we want to re-do on the henhouse but the pen itself should make things much safer for them. The concrete pour for the patio (aka DH’s outside kitchen) that’s already been put off once, got put off again today. Maybe before the weekend is up!?! He’s also decided that he wants to make a small greenhouse out back but I’m still not sure what he’s going for *shrug* but I certainly don’t have a problem with it.

In cleaning the bathroom vanity and sinks earlier, the one sink drain keeps getter slower to drain. It’s always been a problem but today it’s even worse. I used Draino Max and guess what? It didn’t do one darn thing. I’ve emptied everything out from under the sink so I guess it’s time to get a bucket and some tools so hubby can clean out the pipe/trap/whatever it’s called. It’ll be a good time to go through all the stuff I pulled out since it needs doing anyway. I hate to add to his list right now but…I can’t fix it.

Here‘s hoping that we get a break in the weather soon. Did I ever tell y’all how much I hate summer?

So we got back from picking up commodities and a trip to wm. I had a short list for wm, but still spent $118. A large part of this was two cases of 64oz jars and two cases of regular mouth quarts. The quarts are getting hard to find and really so are the 1/2 gallon ones. I should be in good shape for the forseeable future on jars.

Prices are up up up at wm and in some things there were slim pickens and some empty spaces. There are some things that have gone up as much as $5.00 since precovid.

I up graded the package of hamburger patties I got. Instead of 32 for $26, I got 6 Angus beef for just under $10. These are 1/2 pound. One should do for a meal with gravy and other food for a meal for DH.

I got two more Jack's pizzas at wm, that gives up 4 or 5 in the freezer, enough for one a week for a month. Mostly what I got was a little fresh stuff. I think we are in good shape and I won't need to go again until I get my check next month. I got a barS brand of bologna and we have American cheese, so if DH wants a sandwich he's got the fixins for it. I looked at other cold cuts and nice sliced cheese, but decided not to get any.

I need to replace the two bottles of barbque sauce I used on the ribs yesterday, but will wait until I go to DT.

We got pasta twists in commodities, two large cans of vegall (gag) these will go to the church. Two packages of chicken leg quarters, these will also go to the church for a fund raiser they are having, along with the two packages we got last month.

I'm now able to walk around in wm and do my shopping instead of just doing a pick up. I did get a little cash back to add back to my stash, not much but better than nothing like last month.

Praying for you dear ladies. Times are hot and tired.

I haven't been in the canning mood, either. It's 120 degrees right now, and it's been hot, hot, hot. I can hardly breathe when I go outside. It's just not healthy to be outdoors.

I need to be restocking my meat freezer, too. It's got so expensive, though. I'm having to be really careful with my food list when I go shopping, so I can only buy a little at a time to replace what I use. Lately, I've been replacing with only bologna, wieners, bacon, and Polish sausages. I've still got several large bags of chicken breasts, family packs of pork chops, and ground beef in the freezer that needs to be used up, before it gets too old. Can't stand freezer burned meat or the smell of old meat, once it's thawed. It then becomes dog food if it has the slightest smell to it.

I don't know what it is about pork sausage not lasting very long in the freezer. I've found that to be true, too. It will stink to high heaven if its left in there too long. I've thrown out enough to know better. Now, Cary can't eat pork sausage, so I don't buy it any longer.

I ate completely off my food plan today and feel yucky. When I do that its like I have no control and want to keep eating. But when I stick to the food plan I don't feel like getting out of control. I think its the additives in the food and sugar. Best to stay away from it all.

We got one egg yesterday and two or three today. No eggs for the ladies at church for tomorrow night. Its barely enough to keep us stocked and I haven't put any in the freezer or dehydrated any.

I crashed hard last night. Fell asleep, phone in hand, while reading KathyinFl's new chapter. And woke up maybe once.

Son surprised me with a quick morning hug that he decided was needed. I was more than happy to receive and give one.

And the edge of brain fog, that I hadn't fully realized was there, is gone.

Brain worked out the doors issue for the garden storage base. And then I debated getting clear fiberglass roof panels to make a cold frame of the top for winter. Something that could be removed in the spring. The brain will have to work on that idea some more.

After 3 nights, I finally got a good night's sleep last night, too. My knee and hip (same side) have been bothering me really bad. Kept me awake most of the night for the past 3 nights. I slept so good last night that we slept late this morning. By the time we had our coffee, the sun was already up and it was hot. We had to still get out there to water everything. Gardens are all finished, so we didn't have to water them. Just my giant hostas, azaleas, and roses. Used community water on them, since all the rain barrel and water tank hoses have already been put away. It was a hot and hard job for me to drag a long hose all over the yard, but it got done. Since there is no rain in sight, I just left the water hose stretched out in the yard. It'll have to be used again soon. It's in the shade all day, no worries about it bursting.

I'm doing laundry and will put it in the dryer. Too hot to hang out, and everything here is so dusty. Don't want dust getting all over the clean laundry.

Cooking will be kept to a minimum, tonight. A one skillet meal from the pantry and rolls. Basically, it will consist of ground beef, rice, green bell peppers, onions, minced garlic, mixed vegetables, tomatoes, shredded cheddar, and spices. All from the pantry.

DH got the sink drain working in a matter of a few minutes, YAY! I‘ve decided since I was cleaning the bathroom anyway, I’d just go ahead today and start a deep clean and go through everything. I’ll have to work on it a little at a time and rest in between and there’s no way I’ll get done today. So far the shower curtains are down and in the washing machine, all the bottles, soaps, etc. out of the tub/shower and I’ve sprayed cleaner and let it sit to hopefully not have to work as hard! We’re planning on redoing the bathroom in the next few months since it’s getting harder for me to step over into the tub to get a shower, knees are bad and hips are starting to get worse. So it seems the perfect time to go through and get as much out of there (and do an inventory for needs) to make things easier when the demo starts.

I noticed a few days ago that we only had one filter for our ac/heat left (I couldn’t believe I let them get that low) so since Sam’s had them on Instant Savings I ordered 2 packs of 4. I changed the filter earlier then walked into another room and spotted a box that looked suspiciously like a box of filters, yep, a box of 4 filters. I guess DH moved them from their usual place.

I’m thinking I’ll get a few pieces of fish out for supper, a rice mix and veg to be decided. It’s too hot to do much in the kitchen.

I, too, have trouble stepping over the side of the tub, getting out is worse because I'm afraid I'll fall. I still sit down in the tub because I like to soak for a little while, but I may have to give that up.. And after all that stress of getting down and then up and then in and out I'm exhausted after getting dressed. We won't be redoing the bathroom though, not at our ages anyway.

And speaking of age, we just decided that DH will not get another colonoscopy, he's had not issues in that area and will be 80 in a few weeks.

@nomifyle It has gotten much too hard for me to get down in the tub and back up again so no soaking for me! And the nice fancy tubs you can walk into and shut the door are way too expensive for our budget. DH and I both prefer a shower over a bath anyway, although a nice soak in a hot tub of water really helps achy body parts. The plan is to put in a walk-in shower and make a few more changes to make things easier for us both going forward.

Ugh, I definitely did way too much today and oh am I feeling it. Probably need a crane to get me out of bed in the morning. I’m no where near finished in the bathroom deep clean and inventory but I made a ton of progress. Had a few surprises from some shelves in a cabinet that I didn’t get to when I did an inventory back in Feb. I thought I would never need to buy Q-tips again but I found 5 more packages, so not only will I not need to buy anymore EVER, my children and grandchildren will NEVER need to buy them. Outta sight, outta mind!

DH had to go run errands so he picked up cheeseburgers for supper. Which was great since I forgot to get fish out of the freezer and time had gotten away from me!

I sure wish we could redo our bathroom. I think when they added the bathroom onto the house, they installed the tub, then built the walls and door around it. We still have the original tub. Thing is, the door is too small (not standard size) to get the tub out through. It would have to be broken into chunks to get it out or knock the outside wall out. That's too much work for Cary to do himself, and we can't afford to hire it done. I think, barring a disaster or the floor falling out, we're done remodeling. What we have is what we have. It's enough just to keep the upkeep/maintenance on it going.

I slept good again last night but woke up to a Lupus attack on my bladder. Another round of Prednisone is going to be on the way, after calling my rheumatologist this morning. I hate taking that mess, cause it makes me so irritable, and it always causes me to gain weight. If the Prednisone doesn't knock it out, I'll have to go in for steroid injections or to my kidney specialist for bladder treatments for 6 weeks. Those are no fun at all. Once a week for 6 wks. The procedure is quite uncomfortable.

No outside work to be done, today. I'm not feeling well, so nothing much inside will get done, either. No energy at all, and Cary had to help me make the bed this morning. That's about all I'm doing, today.

Sandwiches and chips for supper.

One of my daughters came home last weekend, and brought something I had never seen before. Shelf stable meatballs! They’re in a pouch like tuna fish. Hereford brand.

They are in tomato sauce, gluten free, but have soy in them. They aren’t the most healthy thing, but they’re pretty tasty. They remind me of the meatballs in Spaghetti’os, only better. I think they’re great to store for a quick meatball sandwich, or spaghetti and meatballs.
My daughter found hers at Dollar General for $4, but mine doesn’t have them. I found them on Amazon and Walmart.com for .75 less per pouch, in a 12 count box. I also saw that Dollar General has some in their Clover Valley brand.

Same for us on the bathroom issue. Funny story about DH and taking out a wall. DH was in the mobile home repair and set up business for many years, so he's done some stuff. A while back our washing machine died dead. It would have been a nightmare to try to get it through the house. The laundry area is right next to the master bedroom so DH decided to take out part of the wall to get it out that way. And he had gotten his tractor a little while before that. So he cuts out part of the wall and we get the old one out that way and then the new one in. He repaired the wall and you could never tell the difference. At some point after that he built a 10x12 walk in closet off that wall. This was all a few years ago and he could possibly do it again but it would be a lot harder due to his age. He's a master at doing things like that.

I'm so sorry you are not feeling well. The extreme heat is causing a lot of health issues for folks, praying for you.

I started working on pantry room issues and my back started screaming. I took an Insiad (sp) and put a lidocane patch on it, so maybe I can get back to it. I hurt all over every day. But God is good all the time.

Back when we were a lot younger, we remodeled the whole house inside and out. Only a few things were contracted out. Cary loved doing it, and he still does all the maintenance work on it. To take on a job as big as it would be to take out our tub, it's more than he wants to get involved with. He doesn't have the tools needed to break up the old tub. The tub is against an outside wall, so the whole wall inside and out would have to be replaced. The cedar we have on the outside would have to be replaced, too. I shudder just to think about all the work involved. We'll keep what we have. We just have to be very careful about getting in and out of the tub. We both rather take showers, but I need the tub to do my hot soaks in, too.

Thanks for your prayers. I'm taking AZO maximum strength urinary pain relief pills right now. They work a little bit to ease the bladder spasms.

@SouthernBreeze I‘m hoping since the tub and shower surround is acrylic it won’t be too bad to get out. Although we had discussed redoing the whole bathroom neither of us want all the work, mess, time involved and last but not least, the expense of doing that and I’m only interested in doing what has to be done so I can shower safer. We’re planning on replacing the tub with an acrylic shower pan (I think that’s what’s it’s called) in the same spot the tub is now. DH is thinking of doing tile for the shower walls, but I just want something plain, smooth and easy to keep clean so we’re still thinking that over. At some point we’ll replace the toilet with one that sits higher but there fortunately isn’t any rush yet. Besides the shower my other wish is to either finally build the storage cabinet we’ve never got around to when we built the house or maybe looking around for something inexpensive with doors to replace the metal shelving that’s in there now. I have things in both open bins and some with lids but it collects so much dust it’s unreal. I need the storage space, there is a narrow cabinet that’s built into the space at the end of the shower and things are hard to get to and tend to get shoved to the back and overlooked. Hence why I have a kajillion Q-tips. Like you and Cary, DH and I have done the work on most projects and that’s the plan on the bathroom. We’ve learned how to do a lot of things through the years but the one job I absolutely despised the most was doing drywall, I hate everything about it LOL! I hope you feel better ASAP.

@nomifyle Your husband sounds a bit like mine, where there’s a will, there’s a way!

I‘m moving very slow today (when I’m moving at all) but I did remember to take out the fish for supper tonight and plan on dragging myself into the kitchen to fix a meal somehow. I’ll be so glad when this heatwave lets up and I’m sure looking forward to fall temperatures.
