@SouthernBreeze I‘m hoping since the tub and shower surround is acrylic it won’t be too bad to get out. Although we had discussed redoing the whole bathroom neither of us want all the work, mess, time involved and last but not least, the expense of doing that and I’m only interested in doing what has to be done so I can shower safer. We’re planning on replacing the tub with an acrylic shower pan (I think that’s what’s it’s called) in the same spot the tub is now. DH is thinking of doing tile for the shower walls, but I just want something plain, smooth and easy to keep clean so we’re still thinking that over. At some point we’ll replace the toilet with one that sits higher but there fortunately isn’t any rush yet. Besides the shower my other wish is to either finally build the storage cabinet we’ve never got around to when we built the house or maybe looking around for something inexpensive with doors to replace the metal shelving that’s in there now. I have things in both open bins and some with lids but it collects so much dust it’s unreal. I need the storage space, there is a narrow cabinet that’s built into the space at the end of the shower and things are hard to get to and tend to get shoved to the back and overlooked. Hence why I have a kajillion Q-tips. Like you and Cary, DH and I have done the work on most projects and that’s the plan on the bathroom. We’ve learned how to do a lot of things through the years but the one job I absolutely despised the most was doing drywall, I hate everything about it LOL! I hope you feel better ASAP.

@nomifyle Your husband sounds a bit like mine, where there’s a will, there’s a way!

I‘m moving very slow today (when I’m moving at all) but I did remember to take out the fish for supper tonight and plan on dragging myself into the kitchen to fix a meal somehow. I’ll be so glad when this heatwave lets up and I’m sure looking forward to fall temperatures.

Our tub is the old cast iron enameled kind. That's the problem, and with a door that was built after the tub was installed, there is no way to get it out. I guess Cary could tear the door out and replace with a new one, making it standard size. That would be cheaper. A few years ago, we remodeled the whole bathroom, but left the tub. New toilet and new sink and vanity. We put ceramic tile on the floor, and ceramic tile surrounding the tub to the ceiling. Installed a double door cabinet over the toilet, and he built me (what looks like a screened door pie safe) for more storage space. That's all I have room for in there. The only drywall we have in our house is the laundry room. The rest of our walls throughout the whole house are tongue and groove pine (original to the house built in 1930).

I'll be glad when the heatwave is over, too. It's miserable outside, and I think I have got too much exposure to the sun over the last few days which is why the Lupus is flaring up. I'm highly photosensitive. Over exposure will cause a flare up every time for me. Fall is my favorite time of the year, and it can't get here soon enough.

@SouthernBreeze Those cast iron/enameled tubs were built to hold up and last! We have a claw foot tub that was in the house that was on the farm when we bought it. It’s a replica made in the 1970’s of one from the 1870’s, I keep telling DH he needs to put it in the backyard for me to make into an flowerbed! I used to love filling that thing up with hot water and soaking the chill out of my bones back in the day when we had been out in the cold and damp helping pigs or cows deliver or other farm work.

Are the tile walls difficult to clean? DH has done tile shower walls for youngest DD in two bathrooms and they look great but I haven’t ever asked her about the cleaning part of it. We also have a ceramic tile floor and I really like it, I’ve never thought they were hard to clean but then I don’t have soap, shampoo or conditioner. etc. getting on it either so thats what’s worries me about them. DH is good at lots of things but cleaning isn’t one of them and it’s getting harder for me.

Yeah, they were built to last. There isn't a thing wrong with the tub. I would replace it in a heartbeat with the claw foot type if I could, though. One of those would sure fit the rustic motif of our house.

I have trouble cleaning the grout between the tile around the tub, but it cleans fairly well with any Clorox type cleaner. We used a light colored grout, and it would have been better to use a darker color. I love the ceramic tile floors throughout the house. We used different tile and grout on them. I just clean with white vinegar and water when I mop.

Speaking of bathtubs. After Katrina we landed in the driveway of my oldest son's gutted house in Chalmette. We were living in a camper with a tiny shower stall. A neighbor was throwing away one of those large castiron tubs and we asked if we could have it. Ex put it in the bathroom of the house, my dear brother paid for a comode and a sink. Ex got it all hooked up. that tub was wonderful, it was the best tub I've had since then. I hated to leave it.

Our house was built around 1960. Cast iron tub with narrow bathroom door here too.
When my husband laid tile in our main areas I chose a grout called earth. Best decision ever. Nothing shows on grout or tile. I am surprised when I sweep because I can't see the dirt , dried grass etc.

My folks house had a narrow bathroom door and when dad used a walker they had to keep a separate walker in bathroom because the walkers wouldn't fit through the bathroom door.

We made a stock up run to Costco. A lot went in freezer.
I get so frustrated with packaging these days. I have arthritis in my hands and I didn't think I'd ever get the giant box of granola bars pried open. And those giant containers of laundry detergent are getting heavier !

Forgot to add that Costco fairly well stocked. Saw tomato sauce and canned tomatoes which they hadn't had previously. Limited pasta sauce.

They did have several kinds of rice. But barely any pasta. A bit of spaghetti and one other shape in a bag.i would thing it would sell out in a day.

The produce still sparse and did not look good overall.

It didn't not seem normal because aisles had been rearranged and I'm sure items are missing.

No books that I saw. Tons of women's pajamas. Some slim fitting sweatpants and few jeans and tops.
Didn't notice as much children's clothing but I could have been in wrong area.

Lots of shoppers.

It was fairly cold in the house last winter and I relinquished my nice cozy bathrobe to DH. At some point I got it back and then DH wore his outside zippered with a hood sweatshirt. I felt bad about it but I needed my bathrobe back. so I started looking around for a robe for him and that search had kinda fallen to the wayside until a few days ago. Amazon had one on lightening for a decent price. Plush with a hood. Me I don't care for the plush fabric but DH does. The robe came today and he like it. Usually when I buy something for him he's kinda ho hum about it but he acted like he liked and appreciated it. Now we both have cozy robes for the winter.

Monday I went to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned. When we got back, there was a message on the answering machine that the front tractor tires hubby ordered were in. He needed to pay for them and they would ship them. He paid them they still set on the dock 3 days waiting on FedX to pick them up. The girl hubby had been talking to finally put them in her car and took them to FedX. Hubby ordered these tires 7 months ago. I am glad we weren't in dire need of them.

All week we have been 100* or higher with an extreme heat index. We planned to cut hay, but have put it off till next week. All my hay buyers were relieved they would not have to haul in that weather.

I have been having a lot of pain in my arms and shoulders especially at night. I have been trying to take my thyroid medication again because my levels were high. I was only taking 1/2 a pill every other day or every 2 days with the blessing of my dr. Well I have been off it for 7 days and on the 5th day I was able to sleep with little pain. The 6 day I slept even better. Last night I hurt some on one shoulder, but I think that was from carrying a grand girl that was fussy.

The delivery of the part for my stove has been pushed back to late September. I know we have been waiting at least 2 months already. I have to light my burners with a grill lighter. We just keep the breaker off on the stove unless we need to use the oven. We found we like the .99 cent grill lighters at Atwoods better than any we have tried. And they are easier to light which it easy on my stiff hands in the morning.

Our daughter was notified a little over a week ago that she would be laid off from her current job. She has applied for some other jobs within the company. She works from home and they really want her home with the kids. They don't think they can quite make it on one income, but are going to try if she doesn't get something else before going on unemployment. She was a supervisor at Tyson. But they worked a lot of overtime and she ended up taking this job after Tyson made her come in while sick with covid when she was pregnant. She did test negative the first time and they told her she had to come back to work even though she was still very sick. They were in a meeting and the Nurse over rulled management and sent her and another supervisor home. This time they both tested positive. Hubby and I both got it from keeping the grandchild so she could go back to work. But it wasn't as bad as the first round of covid. She has been working from home over a year.

I have been selling some of the hay out of the barn from the earlier cuttings. I also have a buyer for the 15 bales left from last year. The people needed it to put on some dirt work they had done. It is 1/2 the price of new hay. It works for both of us. They get it cheaper and I get it out of my way.

I grew big boy peas this year. I love them but hubby prefers the purple hull. So next year I will grow purple hull. I like them too.

I can't manage those big laundry jugs anymore, so I switched to detergent sheets.

I didn't research it well enough and I picked Earth Breeze. They work really well but I didn't know they were made in China. As soon as I finish this batch I will be switching to another brand. I still have to keep a jug of detergent for dh, he can't be trusted not to throw an entire pack of sheets in the washer.

I'm not feeling any better this morning. I'm waiting on my RX meds to kick in. I usually don't start noticing any change until the third or fourth day on the meds. It's a slow process. I'm still using AZO pain relief and Tylenol for the low grade temp. I'm praying that no bladder treatments will be necessary this time. My rheumatologist and urologist work hand in hand with me on this. I have a great team of doctors, and I'm so thankful that they all work well with each other and myself.

Nothing getting done today, either. It's too hot to be outside, and house cleaning will just have to wait. My energy level is at zero. Actual temp of 101, today with 111 heat indices. Still no rain in sight. I'll be glad when this high pressure heat dome moves!

We're still getting a few tomatoes along from the big garden. They're getting water from the kitchen sink and washing machine. I was hoping that the bell pepper plants would hold on long enough for cooler and wetter weather, but they are dying. Usually, in the Fall, they start producing again, but not this year.

I love my claw foot tub - I'm short enough that I can sink down and put my toes over the overflow drain and have just from my chin up out of the water; so great for those muscle aches and pains. Only problem with it is I've drowned a few paperback books while reading in the tub

I got some energy from somewhere this morning and got quite a bit done around the house, including clearing the counter of tomatoes by dipping in hot water, peeling, coring and plopping in freezer bags. I put the freezer bags of tomatoes in a tub of ice water, then transferred them to the freezer when they were chilled. I peeled and sliced what peaches were ripe from the first batch I bought, put them in freezer boxes and then in to the freezer. The ones I bought this past Tuesday are still hard. I'd been hoping to be able to work them up before the weekend as I'm keeping the grandsons one day, and going to a football game (JFL) the next. I'm not thrilled with the type - they are Cresthavens, and when picked while still hard, they don't seem to develop enough sugar. Guess if I don't like them, then I should buy some Red Haven peach trees to replace mine that died, right? I've got enough time to properly care for them now that I've retired.

Yesterday, the neighbor lady and I went to the pool, then hit some thrift stores before going on to the next town to the Amish Salvage grocery store. I picked up 6 bags of All free and clear laundry pods - bag of 22 for $1.19, 4 pkg of Jimmy Dean turkey sausage crumbles at $1.29/pkg, freezer boxes for peaches, and a dozen Knorr side dish packets for 49 cents each. I'm going to use one of the packages of Knorr teriyaki rice and some of the sausage crumbles for supper tonight; the rest of the food products went to freezer camp.

At the thrift stores, I picked up some nice long sleeve tops for myself, several pieces of clothing for the grandsons - and my favorite item: a pair of huge and insanely gaudy clip on earrings that the crow family that lives on the east edge of our ground are going to love - for 39 cents  I'll take them apart and leave the bling on picnic table for them. I love my crows - they are my early warning system that something is lurking around that shouldn't be.

Well, I've been up and down a dozen times while typing this, and my ride to the pool will be here shortly so I guess I'd better get ready to head out.

Take care all; stay safe out there!

I use to drink instant coffee and was trying to remember when I stopped. When I married my ex he wouldn't touch instant coffee and being a big coffee drinker here he used a huge drip pot. I got use to his coffee and never drank instant again. I do have instant in my preps, some cheap from DT and some of the good stuff too, still don't care for it.

We have never liked instant coffee, so I don't have any stored. I bought a glass jar of it just to have on hand in an emergency. It sat on a pantry shelf so long it turned into one big hard coffee crystal. I guess the jar sweated on the inside. I haven't bought any since then. I've got at least 2 years of regular Folgers stored up, though.

I decided to store instant also after I read Alas Babylon. I imagine that at some point any kind of coffee will be worth it.

I had some Community instant turn globby so I've vacummed sealed my Community instant in glass jars.

I got a surprise yesterday. Made car loan payment. Instead of listing a payment due this month, they had moved my next payment due out to October. I've been paying extra for over 6 months now. That was a first. Nope. On track to have it paid off by Thanksgiving and I want to be able to celebrate that.

Made the first payment on the personal loan for the fridge. They already had the first payment marked out for October. I made a payment and they moved it to December. Nope.

Used to be that it didn't matter what you paid, the next payment was due on the regular date, for the regular amount. People are going to fall for these stunts and find themselves with extra debt due to interest. I'm just determined to keep plugging along and paying things off as fast as I can.

Before Katrina I was paid 5 months in advance, but after Katrina that didn't matter they wanted their every month payment.

"They" don't want things paid off in advance that costs them interest.

@Digger I pray for everything to work out well for your DD and family.

@SouthernBreeze I‘m sorry to hear you aren’t feeling any better today, hopefully you can get plenty of rest today.

@ReneeT Toss some of that energy my way please!

@kyrsyan Thats great about getting your loan payment paid off early!!!

I woke up at 1:15am and could not get back to sleep, I gave up about an hour later and went to the living room. It wasn’t long until hubby joined me, he had been tossing around and woke me. I think he was achy and couldn’t rest well so neither did I. Plus he was expecting a concrete load that he and a friend were going to be finishing bright and early this morning. They waited and waited, finally finding out they were having truck trouble but would be here after noontime. It’s too flipping hot then. Between rain knocking that job out for awhile, then having them cancel twice at the last minute just chaps my hide. DH has worked so hard on getting everything ready for them and just wants to get the job done but here we are again.

I‘m still working as I can on going through all the stuff in the bathroom, I think we have about as many bandaids as we do Q-tips SMH. I sorted the best I could (such a mind numbing chore) and separated them out in ziplocks. Maybe this will be easier finding the kind and size we need without everything getting dumped out.

I am sooo tired and I still need to decide something for supper.

I hope everyone gets a good nights sleep tonight and feels better tomorrow.

DH will be having hamburger steak with gravy for supper tonight, just have to come up with something to go with it.

I had a late lunch, chopped up Nathans with lots of vegetables.

Its after 3 and I'm still trying to get motivated to get something done, well I did get dressed.

Green peas, that's what he'll have with is hb steak.

Forgot to add that I've been stacking up cans of food from the commodities for the last several months until I could figure out a way to rotate them. So far I have two cases of green beans and almost that much of corn. I did get some box bottoms to contain them

The second commodities that we get monthly did not come to fruition because there was no one to pick them up in Natchitoches. I called yesterday and they told me it was too late to get our boxes, if they aren't picked up they are sent back after 9:00 am. Its not a big loss for us but there are people that really depend on those boxes. We've probably not used any of what we've gotten in the last 6 months. I still get the food because its boosts up my pantry and I don't have to buy those things at a later time.

DH liked his hamburger steak and peas with beef gravy. There is some gravy left over to pour over the dogs food. I guess I'm going to put a can of beef gravy on the grocery list. Although I do have several cans (maybe three flats).

There has been thunder for the last little while and the sky has darkened but no rain. I sure hope there is no lightening from the thunder, everything is very dry and there have been some fires in the general area.

DH let a couple of the goats in the tomato garden because the tomato plants are dying, goats love tomato plants.

Dang, when I started the last post I had something else in mind to say and I forgot. Now I remember, winter clothes.

Since I've lost about 15 pounds I should be able to get into some tops that were too tight last winter. I have some really nice tops that I probably need to lose another 15 to be able to wear. Need to sew up my mouth, LOL.

DH could probably use a couple more pairs of jeans, he keep saying he's going to buy some at wm, but never seems to get around to it. ETA: I just ordered him two pair from wm.

It's been really busy here with canning, cooking, cleaning. Normal life on the farm, and I feel blessed to be able to live this life with my family!

It should be a lot cooler tomorrow, and I'm thankful for that! Our livestock has been miserable this week. They have shade and we give them fresh water several times a day, but I still worry about them.

I was shocked at the prices at our local orchard. A half bushel of apples was $45. A tiny container of plums went for $15. It's a good thing we have our own fruit trees!

Good Morning, All! It started raining last night and just tapered off a bit ago. Rain gauge shows that we got an inch and a half of rain - such a blessing! With temps in the mid to high 90's this past week, the leaves were curling on the sweet corn in my garden and on the the farmer's field corn across the road. The rain is supposed to start in again around noon, then taper off again around 3pm.

John Deere Girl - yes, the orchard prices were a shock to me as well. Two of our apple trees have fruit on them this year - the fruit isn't pretty, but it will make good applesauce once I wash it, quarter it, cut out any bad spots, put it in a pot with a little water, then run it through my Victorio strainer. I need to ask the cousins to mow the area where the trees are so I can get it there well enough to pull any dead ones out, though pulling them out may need to wait for the fall rains as it has been a dry year here. Things were so hectic at work the past few years - dealing with Covid patients, staff quitting and/or being tempted to leave by offers from other hospitals offering sign on bonuses and other incentives, etc..., all the extra things that had to be done - well, I just didn't have the focus that I needed beyond doing what I absolutely had to do here at home, so things like pruning trees, etc... went by the wayside.

I looked at the Stark Brother's catalog of fall offerings and about fainted at the prices. $117 for one Gala apple tree; $64.99 was the lowest price I saw on other fruit trees. I realize the bulk orders for orchards are priced less, but it's no wonder why the orchard prices for fruit have gone through the roof!

Well, I'd better get ready to head to daughter's...

Take care all; stay safe out there!

Hopefully, today is our last day of excessive heat warnings! 102 with 110+ heat indices. A cold front is supposed to move through tomorrow bringing cooler weather, but only a very small chance of rain. If we don't get that rain, it's another 8 days of sunshine. Temps will be only in the 80's, though. It will feel like Fall compared to what we've been dealing with.

Cary watered everything that needed it outside this morning, and that's it for outside work, today.

The Lupus Cystitis is still giving me a lot of trouble. Hopefully, tomorrow I'll start feeling the effects of the Prednisone. Tylenol for the low grade fever, and I'm sure it's helping with the pain, along with the AZO. Still very little energy, and I feel really bad. I'm not getting much done around here.

So sorry Sherree that you are feeling poorly. Praying that you get relief today.

Thank you. I'm praying that the prednisone is all it takes to clear it up, but it does take time. I can no longer take Plaquenil, because of the macular degeneration. Methotrexate is the next treatment option if the prednisone stops working or a prolonged bladder treatment procedure.

I started with sun up. Friend and I got about two and a half hours in. He kept asking me just to tell him and I had to explain that I didn't have words and just needed to show him.

This is a from scratch build with used and new materials, and no blueprint. So each angle and cut has to be marked individually. It did help when we got both ends of the a frame set to the same distance. And I'll go back out this week, when it's cooler, to anchor in a few more screws.

Turns out I was right. A linoleum utility knife works well for splitting bamboo. 4 10 ft+ long pieces split into 1/2 wide pieces to make lattice with. And I've figured out how I'm going to support them while I clean and stain them. And the stain is barnyard red.

I can't seem to locate the small brad nails that I know exist. Small, 1/2 to 3/4, simple small nails that I can pre-drill tiny holes for through the bamboo. And have the construction glue on the backside to hold. I may just have to use the construction glue.

Friend was wondering why I was upgrading the build. I explained that what had come back to me was that as long as I am actively working on it, and nothing appears to be trash, any new complaints are null.

The garden things are temporarily tucked under a good tarp. And hopefully next weekend I can start moving them to what will be their normal home. Maybe the weekend after.

The metal a frame is being painted. It is the next project. We're going to take down the old wooden player, salvage what is salvageable, and get rid of the rest. Son's outdoor swings are being moved to the metal frame for now. I'm going to watch for supplies to make a full adult sized frame for him.

By the time we quit this morning, I was soaking wet and dripping. I went back out and sliced 3 off the bamboo pieces into steips and had to stop again.

I think the rest of today is inside cleaning and laundry. Once I bounce back fully from outside.

Son... no migraines for 5 days. This might be the change in his CBD formula. I'm hoping. It's making him a lot happier. And sass. So much sass.

I keep hoping that one of those tropical depressions (nothing dangerous) will break our drought, but it will only re-enforce the heat and humidity that we're already experiencing. A cold front would be much better if it would just bring rain with it.

@SouthernBreeze Prayers up for you!

Well I think I’m starting to see a little light at the end of the deep clean/organization of the bathroom tunnel. Everything got removed from the vanity under the sinks and gone through/sorted. Only things that are going back down there are extra cleaners on one side and extra peroxide and alcohol on the other. It’s too hard for me to find what I need the way it’s been. Also went through the little drawers each of us has in the vanity and got those sorted and clean, still have one more to go. I set combs and hairbrushes to soak in hot water and shampoo while I was in there. We each have a cabinet over each sink and everything got removed and all is now sorted and cleaned. They were so messy and dusty inside.

I’ve probably filled a whole kitchen trash bag in the past two days, mostly packaging from things like deodorants, shave gel, bandaid boxes, etc. but also things that we aren’t using nor will, old make-up (can’t even remember the last time I’ve worn any) makeup brushes, etc. It feels great to have all that junk gone!

I did find that I should get myself some new hair clips and I couldn’t find a single ponytail holder left in my drawer so I’ll add those to my ”need to get“ list. We’re decently stocked for the most part but it’s always better to know what you have and what you need.

Hopefully I’ll be finished in there tomorrow, still have a few more things to go through and get organized. I’m feeling better about the work that will need to be done regarding the tub/shower knowing everything else has been taken care of.

And I definitely slept better last night but I still feel like I needed several more hours!

I have opened bandaids that won't 'stick' anymore. And you don't know it until you need them.
We don't use a lot but I am making a mental note to replace more often.
I keep more gauze and tape than I used to because I remember my folks used more as they aged.
Not something you want to be without when you need it.

I threw out 2 whole boxes of Band-Aids just last month, because none of them would stick any longer. I also keep gauze and tape on hand. The 2 boxes I threw out weren't that old, either. IIRC, they were bought sometime last year.

I have opened bandaids that won't 'stick' anymore. And you don't know it until you need them.
We don't use a lot but I am making a mental note to replace more often.

Think about using coban. That is probably a brand. It looks like an ace wrap but sticks to itself and is reusable. Sometimes labs use them instead of a gauze and tape. Is found on Amazon.

I haven’t noticed any bandaids not wanting to stick (I hope we don’t either) and with the grands we’re usually into them fairly often. I’ve got a big tote in the basement with lots of different sizes of gauzes, tape, vet wrap etc. and smaller amounts of those things in the big first aid box in the bathroom. That wrap is one of the best inventions ever!

Put a small bottle of tincture of benzoin in the bandage cabinet. It really helps them stick better/longer, and has other reputed benefits as well...

Bandaid kept where it gets hot really seem to lose their stickiness early...
