We are home from the emergency vet. They aren’t exactly sure what caused her to vomit so much, but did rule some things out.
Xrays came back clear where neither the doctor or radiologist saw a blockage. They did find she has a uti and prescribed antibiotics but think that was secondary to her gastro issues. (She has been pooping and peeing like normal so we are hopeful for no blockages).
Her timeline is as follows. She threw up a small amount saturday morning but was fine rest of the day Saturday, Sunday and all day Monday until evening. Monday night she vomited a lot (several times). She slept though the night. I started a bland diet of chicken and rice yesterday (smaller amounts spread out every few hours) and she held it all down. She was still acting fine, gums pink, etc. Early this morning (around 4am) she started throwing up again. A lot. It started as the yellow bile, but then had some spots of blood in it. We knew we wanted her seen by a vet today. She threw up 5-6 times from 4-8. I called the vet at 8 this morning, and they couldn’t get us in. (We are at our one day full time home and hadn’t seen the vet here - they recommended an emergency vet an hour away.). We went. Our first estimate was over $2200 walking in the door. I almost fainted but reminded myself it would be okay. The biggest picture was her. I told myself this was also why I have pet insurance for her as I never want to make a medical decision for her based on cost. They did Xrays, blood work, rehydrated her with the fluids under the skin, and gave her nausea meds and sent us home with more plus an antibiotic for the uti. Final cost was $1300 (before insurance) with me paying $537.
We do have a call in with our regular vet to touch base with him and will head there tomorrow if need be.

Lessons learned in all of this:
-keep half tank of gas in Vehicle at all times
-know a vet’s number of when visiting to areas
-I need to keep more canned chicken / rice on hand at this location
-I am thankful for my pet insurance
-I am thankful I put away a small amount each month in the event “something happens”
- I need to become more knowledgeable on what to do in the event of no vet availability

Thinking out loud here . . . Christmas Eve is Sunday night. I'm not that far ahead in my planning. I keep thinking that I have another week, and I don't.

My whole time sense has been majorly messed up this year!
Me too! And then I get a damned crash day, with no warning. Yesterday I literally slept all day... couldn't wake up and function to save my life! Now I'm even further behind!

(And I wouldn't be on here except I need to take a 10 minute break from sewing every couple of hours if I don't want to end up too crippled to walk for the holidays)

When our baby dog got snake bit (non-poisonous), we had him on some strong antibiotics, plus a small tub of yogurt every day, and after for about a week.
That can work, but most dogs (exceptions being those on dairy farms who have gotten milk daily since puppyhood) are lactose intolerant. So yogurt can cause the same symptoms you're trying to help!

But, by all means, if you're dog tolerates dairy, yogurt can help.

I finally got time to take my canner lids for testing. Both are off a bit but one more so. She said that making adjustments I could still use both without issue. I think it's time to order at least one new gauge to have on-hand. New gauges need to be tested and I'm wondering if they can be tested before installing on the canner because that would make taking them much easier.

I went to two of my favorite thrift shops while in town. I found a like new or maybe new pair of sweatpants and sweatshirt, slightly used fleece top and new a long sleeve blue plaid cotton shirt. Prices are up so $4 for each piece. Could not have purchased any one item new for $16! Best buy of day was a tortilla press for $3. I've wanted one for a long time because I want to learn how to make tortillas. Figure that is a good SHTF skill to have. Also went to library resale shop and found three books for $3. My friend found a cookbook by some TV chef for her son for Christmas. Knowing her, he'll probably have it this evening!

Also stopped at Dollar General for cream cheese but the store brand ($1.69) was out so only Philadelphia brand for $3. Third time I've tried to find lower priced store brand so decided to spend the money and be done with it.

I have four or five cookbooks on my table trying to decide which recipe to use for dinner rolls for our Christmas on Jan. 13. I'd like to bake them next week and freeze them which gives me a chance for a do over if needed. I haven't made rolls for so long that I can't remember which recipe I used. I imagine any of the recipes would turn out okay so just need to decide on one and get started.

I can relate to low energy. I'm attributing it to being old. It's also irritating that even on high energy days, I have to limit how much I do to avoid triggering back pain.

Town was crazy busy, and we weren't even in the main shopping area. We were downtown which is NOT a major shopping area. The thrift shops were really slammed. Even the library was busy, so we had to park a good distance out. Extension Service was not busy at all and only had one person working. I even found a parking spot right next to the building.

Thank you. I was hoping you would chime in. which ones do you recommend? I need them for myself too.
Oh, boy... I haven't bought them in several years, since discovering a special probiotic yogurt starter... it contains Lactobacillus reuteri, and when made according to their directions, ends up with very high numbers of live bacteria... I combine it with my regular yogurt starter, and it works very well... at least as well as some of the expensive brands of probiotics out there.

But we used these for a couple of years, and found they worked adequately...

Hope your pup feels better soon! One other thing I always use, whenever a dog starts having digestive problems, is activated charcoal. It helped save Red's life when she ate 3# of very moldy cream cheese! You can't overdose them (but don't give within 2 hours of any meds... it will adsorb them, as well!) I usually dump a tablespoon in broth (we have bigger dogs), and squirt it in their mouth pouch with an oral syringe. Definitely a job to be done outside if possible! (Or in the bathtub for apartment dwellers!) Most dogs I've had will drink it from the syringe pretty readily... it doesn't have any flavor itself, and they don't seem to mind the texture... they just think it's delicious broth!

Smaller dogs can be given 3-4 capsules...

I finally vacuumed the carpet this morning. It's been way too long since it was last done!! Anyway, I finished the living room and hallway and unplugged the vacuum to change plug-in so I could reach my bedroom and the plug was so hot it almost burned my fingers!! I decided to wait a while before plugging it in again. All is now finished, and the dirt dumped, the filter cleaned, and vacuum put away probably for another month. I remembered to put on a dust mask before cleaning the filter which I did directly into the garbage can in the garage. No coat required as temp is nearly 30 degrees. I dearly love having an attached garage.

I have learned my lesson on overdoing so will not be looking for another project today. With therapy and common sense, I've been able to keep my life on track despite my back issues. Of course, sometimes just moving the wrong way hurts like the dickens and there's nothing I can do to prevent that. Keeping up with daily therapy helps and I had been slacking off. I missed a lot in November but have been doing better this month. I missed two days last week. and my goal is to take only one day off per week. We'll see how that goes.
The wires going into the plug may be damaged, causing the plug to heat. This is VERY DANGEROUS!

You need to cut the cord off a couple of inches away from the plug and install a new plug ASAP! Failure to do this could cause a fire.

Thanks for the info. I'd noticed it hot before but this time it was much hotter. Of course, I'd been running it much longer than usual since I hadn't vacuumed for a month.

Sure..

It works well on its own. I've started mixing it with a mild starter I've had in the freezer for years (from New England cheese making supply), and hubby (and the little girls!) love it.

It's funny.. our son was telling us about an expensive, organic probiotic he had started taking, and how it "made him sh!t three times a day" (sorry!)... and how much better he felt. Well, this L. reuteri starter does the same thing... not forever, but it seems it makes the whole gut work better.

We kicked our milk cow out with the beef cows for the winter, so I don't have fresh raw milk until spring. But there's 3 gallons in the freezer, for yogurt, because hubby doesn't want to be without it!

Voice on the Prairie / FJB!
Thursday, already. Yikes! This week is just flying by.

Got the kitchen cleaned and baking supplies laid out. Got laundry started. Met briefly with another insurance agent (see my Plan G thread in the Corkboard if interested in a Medicare discussion).

I'm going to continue working on the garage and also get the baking started -- fudge & Rice Krispie treats. Tomorrow morning, I'll bag those, deliver them, pick up last-minute items from the grocery store, and get my hair cut. With luck, I'll also finish the garage tomorrow. I've got another set of shelves to assemble and then load with the rest of the items.

I have no idea what I'm doing for Christmas dinner. It's just going to be me. I'm thinking about making several things, like a pot roast and a whole chicken, and then freezing portions. I'll decide tomorrow.

The chicken I cooked yesterday is in the fridg waiting for DH to de bone it. Will make great chicken sandwiches. I looked and I have a few more whole chickens in the freezers, first of the year I'm going to get started on finding what all is in my freezers. I've got 3+ pounds of cooked ground meat to go in freezer containers or zip loc bags, in addition to the chicken. We are not big chicken eaters. DH basically just likes chicken fried, I don't fry chicken and I don't care for the way he fries it.

Still working on the kitchen, again, its not really in bad shape this time. Need to get laundry started plus many more things that should get done.

I didn't wake up in pain this morning which helps.

Husband drank every bit of the green tea. I guess I should be thankful he drinks that instead of soft drinks. I don't know what he does with the empty cartons or I would have known we were getting low. Thankfully they had it in stock this week at the store.
I had everything loaded this morning and I went to start the car and it wouldn't turn over. I'm glad it did it at home instead of leaving me stranded at WM. I used to be able to get up and make myself be at WM by 8:30 AM, but I just can't do it anymore. It has been really cold the past week and I just can't stay outside and get stuff done.
Got to get the barn chores done and find some more fire wood.

I am beat. I don't know why getting good news is so exhausting but I think it has something to do with how I handle stress. I don't feel it until it is gone.

Son came home, curled up in bed, and went back to sleep. Friend saw him knuckling at his ear, so he may be fighting an ear infection. When he decides to get up again, I'll check some things and see what I find.

Grocery order showed up at friend's house. I dropped boxes at the thrift. I was lucky and found a good laptop bag, and just a protective case, at good prices. And some towels. Gas tank is full. And I have a list of things to handle when I finish work tomorrow.

Oh, and I need to contact Dell again. Because I discover that, at the minimum, they didn't send the hard drive that was supposed to be in the laptop. I'll need to figure out how to check on the rest of the features it was supposed to have.

We went to the dry cleaners to pick up laundry this morning. Now that's out of the way, I'm going to start making all of my pies, tomorrow. I decided to make our Christmas supper (for Cary and myself) on Saturday, instead of Christmas Eve. I'll still have a lot of cooking Christmas Eve for our family Christmas Day dinner.

I got a new sale catalog from Sam's, yesterday. Several items in there on sale that I use regularly. Gonna hit them up after Christmas for those items and smoked half hams, too. The sale doesn't start, until the 28th. I have a doctor's appointment that day, so we'll already be in Tupelo, without having to make a special trip for Sam's.

Waiting on new shoe and book orders to come in.

If you like fried chicken but dislike frying it, you could always do oven fried. Very easy, and you don't have to stand and watch it either.

I went out to find DH to ask him if he was ready to eat. I found him at the chicken house, and I finally got to see the chicken babies, they are not babies anymore, DH said they are the size of crows. 17 of the 20 he ordered made it and they look very healthy.

While I was out there I decided to look in the school bus, haven't been out there in a long time. It could have been worse and I found a couple of things I was wondering where they were. And two cases of jars in plastic. You can never have too many jars, LOL.

We both had chicken sandwiches and cole slaw, it was tasty.

I just took the last pan of rolls from the oven. I decided to go with the recipe that had the dirtiest page! While looking for the little cookbooks, I found the book for the vacuum sealer. Reading the trouble shooting information I may have found the answer so will not be putting it into the trash this week. Whew that was close, I had it by the backdoor to take out this evening.

I took my donations yesterday so that's another box of "stuff" gone. There was a nice milk glass compote with lid that was my mother's, but no one wanted it including me, so it's gone. I hope it finds a new home and is appreciated the way my mother appreciated it. Was not going to happen here.

I counted 18 boxes of empty quarts in the basement the other day. Not sure that was all of them but that's enough! I have a lot of pasta in original packaging stored in buckets and tins. I'm thinking maybe I should transfer the smaller stuff into quart jars.

When I got out my K-Tek to make the rolls, there was remains of weevils and one live one in the bowl. First time in forever that I've seen one. Most everything is stored in glass jars or in the basement in buckets and tins and that cupboard does not have any food in it, so I'm not too concerned. However, I'm thinking I need to do a thorough cupboard cleaning soon.

Other than the Christmas Eve service at church I do not have any Christmas plans. As far as I know at present, I will be home alone. One grandson may come out in which case I'll cook something. His brother and family plus his mother have been invited to brother's in-laws and grandson was not. I told him if he doesn't get an invite there, he's welcome here. I know the in-law and am sure the lack of an invite was just an oversight because she is a kind person.

Best Christmas card message this year was from late dh's cousin who says she remains cancer free. Worse from my cousin who bemoans the fact that Iowa has become one of the most conservative states in the USA, not prochoice and not supporting LGBTQ rights. (Yeah, for Iowa.) Also, for our president to be surrounded by those who give good advice. (Like that's going to happen.) Guess why I avoid communicating with her face to face!

Doing laundry and making pecan pies, today. Thank the Lord that we have our own pecan tree with lots of chopped pecans in the freezer! Have ya'll seen the price of pecans these days?! I'll make the pumpkin pies, Sunday. Since I'll have the pecans out of the freezer, today, I'll be looking up my fudge recipe and make fudge with the pecans, too.

Our weather can turn bad Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Thunderstorms with possible tornadoes! I think I'd rather have snow! 71 degrees for both days! 65 for today.

I began taking the new medication from my Mac Degen specialist. It hasn't done anything to my BP. As a matter of fact, my BP is still running too high. Even with home remedies included, I still can't get it down. Around 153/90 consistently. I don't have a clue as to what's causing it. Once I see my specialist on the 28th, I might have to call my PCP to see what he says about it. I'm not supposed to see him again, until April.

We're still resting and relaxing, today. Our bodies need it. Cary's leg hurt him a good bit, yesterday, after making the trip. It's just sore from sitting on it all the way there and back. Inside a vehicle, there is just no way to relieve the pressure off of it.

We have to make a quick run to pick up laundry at our new dry cleaners, tomorrow. I forgot about having to do that. No other stops, though.

At least, we're getting good home cooked meals for a change. Tonight, will be baked boneless pork chops, homemade baked beans, buttered steamed potatoes, and cornbread. Butter cookies for dessert. We had Polish sausage cooked with kraut, green beans, boiled potatoes, and cornbread last night.
Have you had your kidney function checked? Kidneys help control BP.

Time to start a food and activity diary, with BP numbers once or twice a day... preferably at the same time a day. See if youncan find any patterns.

Summerthyme
My PCP has had me taking my BP and recording it twice a day for quite a while now. I check it when I get up every morning and about an hour after eating supper every night. I've tried to see if there is a connection to what I'm eating. Sometimes, I can justify the higher readings with what I've eaten, but it's not consistent.

I take my recorded readings to him at every visit.

We grow the thornless berries on 6 foot field fence just a line with t posts... very easy...
Our area is wonderful for berries of any type...

we are on 11 acres...and we have tons of wild thorny blackberry bushes on our property line in places....10 feet wide ..it is a wonderful thorny hedge....on a good year.... rain wise .....we will pick a few if they are large but mostly leave them for the birds and wild critters.....
We also grow blueberries and strawberries..
That fits right in with the rest of my gardening. My garden is over 50% vertical with the rows being mostly around 6 ft. high. We also have the wild blackberries along a fence row in the pines. They are just too hard to get to so we also leave them for the wild creatures.

MIne was doing the same. I added Garlique in the red and green box and it took it down about 20 points. That was well over a year ago. The green and blue for blood pressure doesn't work nearly as well because it isn't nearly as potent. It has to be the red and green one.

This week I have made 2 small, gluten free plum puddings. DH doesn't eat wheat so I modified my regular plum pudding recipe using gf flour and gf bread crumbs. I haven't tried it before so I hope they came out alright. I still used the brandy soak! I made lentil and mushroom pate and a fruit bread that my Mom used to make (NOT gluten free it is for me).

A couple of years ago my blood pressure was spiking (still does). I told the doctor that I thought it was connected to the colitis because it went down after an episode of colitis (going to the bathroom). No possibility she said and off I went to Iowa Heart for the full round of testing. I'd told that doctor the same thing and he made fun of me saying that there was only one paragraph in all medical books even suggesting such a possibility. Okay, all testing done, and I go for follow up visit and guess what I was told -- it is probably related to your colitis. And more irritating is that he didn't even give recognition to my original comment.

The diary sounds like a good idea to see if you can find correlation. Mine is easy. Major blood pressure rise followed by episode of rushing to the bathroom followed by blood pressure returning to normal. Not fun but doctor says not life threatening. Just another old lady thing I have to live with.

I planted raspberries (3x) and blueberries. The rabbits enjoyed eating the raspberry canes to the ground until they died (the raspberries not the rabbits). For some reason the blueberries never thrived. We built a cage for them to protect from rabbits, deer and other varmints so that wasn't the problem. I think I got two harvests from the raspberries before the rabbits finished them off. Never got a single blueberry in six or so years. I finally dug them out and took the cage down as it had become overrun with weeds. Rabbits got the peach tree too. The cherry tree just died for no apparent reason. Strawberry bed has been planted at least six times with zilch results. I've given up on fruit.

My grandmother used to make plum pudding from her grandmother's recipe. Her grandparents immigrated from England, so it was a recipe brought from there. I personally never cared for it, but I do have the recipe somewhere. I love fruitcake but it is on my list of foods I should not eat so I no longer make it. The lentil and mushroom pate sounds interesting.

Deja vue. Did Thanksgiving without water. Grand and DH were replacing disposal when DH said something about the faucet that has leaked for years. In spite of my request to leave it for later they messed with it and now we are pulling the sink today. Dinner is tomorrow. Sigh. Everything in the house is more than 30 years old. We have been blessed not to have had to replace things sooner.

Gotta get the washer off the front porch. Hauled it out yesterday. It's move it or put duct tape on it and celebrate our redneck status. : )

For my anniversary and Christmas this year I have now gotten a new water heater, a new water tank, new flooring beneath them, new disposal, new toilet seals and now a new faucet. The washer is going to have to wait. Will use neighbor's for a couple weeks. I feel like I have had a makeover. So do our finances.

Got more jars washed and put away. My donate bags are taking over. Hope to take them in next week.

Got a baby Christmas tree to replace the one I forgot I pitched. It's a 3 ft prelit. I put a box under it to raise it a bit. The great grands will be here and I wanted it for them and MIL. When digging in the closet for decorations I found some very old tiny figurine ornaments still in the original box. They are so pretty. And fragile. But we are using them. Should one get broken we will sweep it up and go on. It's about our loved ones, not our loved things. Grand is in from military. Stealing MIL from nursing home. Any one of us could be gone tomorrow. We will make the most of this time. Even if we end up doing dishes in the laundry sink.

Kids are taking bulk of Christmas decor when they leave. We won't have room for anymore. They are also going through the books in personal library. Every item they take is something I don't have to move or deal with.

Found an absolutely gorgeous old coat someone gave me. It is too big for me but I can get a vest and pillow or 2 out of it. Heavy lining. Super soft on the outside. Someone spent some money on it. Leaving it on the sewing machine to be done as a snow day project.

Off to work on faucet. I have found something I hate as much as sh*trock. 30 year old rusted sink parts. Very grateful however for indoor plumbing and sinks.

For the last 3 months, we've had doctor appointments all the way into Tupelo almost every other day. That has totally and completely taken us out of our comfort zone. We're just home bodies. Plus, I got very concerned over a wrong diagnosis for Cary. I am beginning to think that my high BP is due to all the stress of it all. I'm watching to see if it goes down now that we're sorta back to living our normal lives. My consistently high BP didn't start, until we got that wrong diagnosis that Cary had kidney disease.

That's very likely! And you're probably stressing over the high blood pressure readings (as well as your MD), which of course ends up in a vicious circle. Praying you find something which can help you relax and destress (and I'm sure the clean bill of health in regards to Cary's kidney issues will help!)
