We are under an ice storm warning. It should start after midnight tonight. I have a list of things to do incase the power goes off. Filling some buckets for animal water and toilet flushing is the main item. We are on a well so no power means no water. We have a generator but won't get it out unless the power is off more than a couple of days. We will warm up above freezing Monday late and the freezing rain will turn to just rain. But we may get 1/2 inch of ice before the warm air gets here.

We have gone through a lot of fire wood this week. I am so glad we stay a couple of years ahead. We still have snow on the ground from last Sunday's storm. We stayed toasty warm with our wood stove. We have a heat pump, but don't use it to heat much. The wood stove is much more pleasant and warmer. We went to friends house for dinner last night and I don't think their heat pumped ever kicked off the whole time we were there. They did have a fire in the fire place and it was nice to sit around. But it did little it warm the rest of the house.

I hear hubby up so I am going to have coffee with him. Have a blessed day and stay safe

Ugh. I woke up slow and hard, and with a migraine trying hard to blossom. It's taking a bit longer to get the body moving.

Son had a rough night. I'm letting him have a slow lazy morning in the hope it will help him. I'm wondering if the problem for both of us isn't that the heat was running all night.

I got enough laundry done. We should be defrost fully by tomorrow. And then comes the fun of water shortages due to people not realizing that their pipes are busted and getting them shut off, and people going water use crazy when they have water again. I have a feeling next week is going to be more of a mess that this past week. But at least pipes won't freeze and break due to freezing temps.

And the more recent info says that the water department is using the electric meters to track locations that seem to have excessive use. They are then visiting the locations and turning off the water if there are signs of a leak. They try to speak with an owner first. I'm not real fond of the intrusion but this is a valid use for it.

There are people on the local town FB page having meltdowns because the government wasn't prepared for a "once every 50 years" event. I want to smack them somewhat. But they do have a valid point on a few things. First is that the water department has badly failed in the communication department. It was the county level that issued the warning.

And then the local level released the personal mobile phone number for the county level controller to the general public. Yeah, someone is going to get fired over that one.

All the counties around us notified people in advance of the pressure drop and took proactive steps. Although I'm not sure their proactive steps helped in some areas. I would say that if I got an announcement that told me the local water authorities were going to turn off water on a deep freeze night, I'd remember to run the water until the pipes were completely drained. And turn off the hot water heater. But who knows. It probably would have been better if the authorities had explained these things.

On the other hand, some people are going to be real unhappy with their next water bill. Apparently "a drip" was to open their taps full force, including the outside ones. And that would be another reason for the water shortage. Interestingly enough, the authorities did release guidelines for that. Although they made me laugh because if I followed those, I'd have frozen pipes. They told people they only need to have cold water dripping and at the faucet furthest from the connection. That works for me down to about 25, if both hot am cold are dripping. Any lower and kitchen and bath must be dripping.

I am seriously considering heat tape this year, regardless of whether I get reimbursed for it. I wonder if those weatherization grants would cover it.

Anyways, caffeine and time are slowly backing off the migraine and getting me fully moving. It will be time to tackle some things in a little bit.

Oh, and the delivery last night was interesting. Apparently two women teamed up for safety. And they were being careful and smart. I went back and boosted their tip. They saved me a worlds worth of stress and headache. I met them at the end of the driveway because I didn't want them to risk getting hurt on the ice. Because that thick snow is now deep ice that is breaking in sheets.

I think another change is going to be a barrel of ice melt stored near the driveway. I can decorate it, maybe put a planter on it, to help "hide" it. That would have it close to where it would be needed so I wouldn't have to figure out how to haul a 50lb bag.

Trash is another problem. It normally wouldn't be, for me, but I was purging so both cans were crammed full. The county and town have already said to put it all out and they'll grab it all next week. Pick up cycles are going to be fragged so everyone is supposed to have trash roadside as soon as possible. But I really do wish this had occurred on a normal week when I barely have half a can. I am glad that I have big bags on hand. I normally don't. I may add a dozen to the 5 gallon bucket of supplies.

And I found two nice, collapsible silicon wash basins. They have good reviews and will be on my next order.

It is hard to remember to grab the disposables. I haven't used disposable stuff in so long that I have to actively remind myself not to get the regular dishes.

The events have been annoying. But hopefully they will prompt some folks to be more prepared.

After a week, we still have ice all over our yard. The roads are melting, but they refreeze overnight. Our back deck finally melted some, yesterday. It's been solid ice. Hopefully, by the end of today all traces of the ice will be gone. It's supposed to warm up to 38 degrees. That's still below normal for us for a high, but I'll take it. We're supposed to see highs in the 50's and 60's starting Tuesday with rain off and on all week.

Cary is calling our vet to see if he can bring Frisco in for his yearly checkup tomorrow. We can usually see him the same day as we call, but with all the closures for a week, they may be backlogged. As long as he gets checked by the 5th of February, because he will need his next heartworm med by then. He's out. We never let him miss a dose. We get 6 months' worth at a time. That's all our vet will give out.

Bites are much better, but I'm still cancelling my dental appt. for tomorrow. My face isn't well enough for any work right now on my teeth. The work I need done is on the same side as the bites. I will reschedule for in about 2 weeks. Surely, I will be well enough by then. Bites are still a bit puffy and red. The side of my nose on that side is still red, too, and still a bit swollen. My vision in that eye doesn't appear to have been affected, but that eyelid feels funny/ weak. It's been a month, today, since I noticed the red spots in my eyebrow and forehead. I had no clue that these spiders packed such a punch. Lesson learned.

No home fellowship, today. We'll just relax by the fire and sip our coffee.

Still praying for everyone. May you all be blessed in the coming week.

Too cold and we are not going to church. The furnace was running and the temp by my chair was 66 about 3:30 am. Although my cover keeps me warm, except my nose, my nose stays cold. I haven't been away from the house in a couple of weeks, I think. Don't need to go anywhere.

Yeah. The cold is the reason for not having our home fellowship today. It was down to 11 degrees last night, and with the refreeze of all the roads, it's just too dangerous. Everyone just wants to stay in where it's warm, including us. I haven't left the house in over 2 weeks, either. I'll come out of hibernation, once the temps are reasonable again. Like this coming week, LOL. 50's and 60's for our highs and 30's at night which are our normal temps for this time of year.

We hade our artic blast last week and our building at work has a old school electirc HVAC unit and a Heatpump unit.
The heat pump blew up at some point in the 3 days. I was off Sunday I I guess some one kicked the thermostate to 80 degrees and heat pumps don't heat below 32 degrees unless the emergency heat strips are turned on. They were not and it ran until to burned up the breaker and the compressor blew up.

Don't think twice about getting heat tape.. we have one problem water line...in comes up from the well house and all our lines are now internal except the line to the kitchen sink...it runs under the crawl space...the only way we could reroute it is across the kitchen floor so not an option....we have heat tape on that line that was originally copper we have replaced it with pec..more forgiving...we also have a rough duty light bulb under there that get plugged in when get into the uppér teens....we were down to 5 and didn't freeze.....it is a very tight crawl space...a horrible space for a water line break....the line is near the access door....we have been there...and to fix a break..never sgain
GET HEAT TAPE.....we have more than one replacement as back up...they do wear out....we get it on Amazon....you wrap around and around the pipe and just plug it in to a regular outlet ..but it is nearly impossible to get this time of year....best buy in the summer..we use a heavy duty electrical cord and outdoor drop light fixture for the bulb..,.
We have a tight block well house and use an old style outdoor spotlight there for normal heat ...new led bulbs are no good and small space heater set on low for brutal cold..
Had a friend who forgot to plug in his heat tape and froze... again exposed under house..he plugged it in and it defrosted his line without a break...it is great stuff

The problem with heat tape, for me, is that the crawl space is less than a foot in height. Very few people can get under there. Once it is run, I have several people that can connect it to a power switch. Or I may just use a plug in one.

My house is on piers. And of course, the access is at the points where water connections are, which leads to a crosswind under the house that goes right across the pipes. I have that blocked for now with plans for better protection to be installed in the spring. (Window wells and automatic vents.)

I think the only thing that has saved my butt is that I've learned this house and its issues.

Good morning! A balmy 22 F here, partly sunny, for which I'm thankful. The furnace is a lot happier. This week it's going to warm up and rain, and there will be a freeze/thaw cycle, with lots of ice, so one pair of ice cleats is now hanging by the back door and the other pair is in the car.

Later today, I'll fill a small bucket with gravel for the front sidewalk and steps. Gravel is the only thing that works for me with freezing rain. If I had wood ashes, I'd use those, but I don't heat with wood.

I've got about 3/4s of the floor finished. I'm down to only doing a row or two per day, but I'm happy that it's almost complete. That's my home office. I'm working in the living room right now, which isn't bad, but I don't really have room for the small table and the full-sized computer tower, with two large monitors that were back there.

The closet repair is on hold. I need different closet rod hardware, plus I don't like that pole: it's not sturdy enough for heavy winter coats when it's fully extended. The pole won't be wasted: I'll mount it under the stairs and hang more onions (in panty hose legs) from it. There wasn't much in that closet, so I put everything back. I hate that, but I want this repair done correctly so that I don't have to revisit it.

I've got beef stew going in the dutch oven on top of the stove. Wishing everyone a warm and safe day!

We have a similar problem the crawl space is not high DH found long fiber glass pole kind of a flexible pole and got in under the house as far as he could on his belly and used the pole to wrap the tape around and the pipes....we had run a very long wire down from under the sink along the water pipes to hook to the heat tape to pull it along the pipes under the house ....not run it down them..that was impossible...it works when wrapped around..this the newer section of the house it has cider block around this section and a board over the opening about the 1920s...we have a wooden pine floor in the kitchen and a drilled hole the plug end comes up through the floor to an extention cord.....no floor insulation..we have thick wool throw on the kitchen floor all around the kitchen island...the floor gets butal cold with the kind of cold we have been having...no water in the old section...1800's on stone foundation...that would have been impossible....to get under...
All of heat tape we have comes with a plug on the end....it is a simple matter to plug to an indoor extension cord once in the house...we unplug it most of the year ...very small electric bill for heat tape as it has tiny draw....ours also has on light at the plug..to show it is working....it might be possible to have a bit of the crawl space dug out just wide enough to make access to your waterlines easier...dh has done a bit of that to ours...to fix water leaks before we replaced the copper lines...just a sort of a belly path... don't know how else to describe it...it has been slow going on that we have been here since 1999....
It was a challenge to get that heat tape underneath the house....we have learned this...do consider the light bulbs also as the old bulbs give off an amazing amount of heat in a crawl space....but whatever you end up doing ...get back ups..we have a huge stock if bulbs for both the crawl space and well house and extra fixtures and extension cords..we have gennies..so we can make our own power if need be

We had no power for nearly two weeks in January a couple of years ago...ice storm....some were out longer than us ..took down over 150 poles in this county alone...we did great with genie power ...no frozen pipes... enough power to run the well pump...and most everything...we didn't run the clothes dryer but the wood stove took care of that...and took a bath not a shower...we do have a propane non-electric the in the kitchen.

Re heat tape: I had it in my trailer and under my house when I had only a crawl space (last two houses had full basements because I moved to Iowa, aka "tornado country").

The heat tape saved my behind, and paid for itself quickly. Plumbing repairs were expensive back then, but now . . .

There are handymen who can help install them if getting into the crawl space is a problem.

It's expensive, but running a heat lamp in the crawl space can also help, if heat tape can't be installed right now.

We've got ribs from the last pig DH butchered, that I cooked in the crock pot overnight, pretty tasty. And we have left over sausage and cabbage from last night. I'm thinking about making another soup, although I do have some containers of the last one in the freezer. That soup didn't have a lot of vegetables in it but lots of meat.

I've been cold all morning, but I put on some extra socks and put my cozy warm robe back on and I've warmed up. I also turned the furnace up just a tad to run for a little while, helps to take the chill off the house.

We have not been dripping the water during this freeze spell and we've been blessed with no leaks, hope that continues. The water system here has issues and I don't want to add to them by dripping water. I'm greatful for running water, even tho it has a brown tinge to it. We run it through a brita filter to use for cooking and coffee. Doesn't help the color much. We make a good effort to conserve water, but the bill is still high. And speaking of bills I absolutly dread the next electric bill. Its up to 38 outside.

We pick up commodities tomorrow, rain is predicted but the temp will be warmer. We can always use the rain after the a summer with not rain.

To my surprise, my dentist office called a while ago. I guess the office workers came in today to try and get caught up on some of their stuff. She noticed that I had tried to call, twice, so she called me. I told her my situation, and she rescheduled me for Feb. 20th. That works for me.

We're still just piddling around the house today. Bringing in more firewood and reading for the most part.

I'm making bacon cheeseburgers with all the fixin's tonight with home fries. See, that already cooked bacon in the freezer comes in handy for such nights as this. Cary loves bacon on his cheeseburgers. Just microwave a few seconds to heat it up.

I've got a beef chuck roast in the fridge thawing for tomorrow night. It will go in the crockpot first thing in the morning.

We tried the heat lamp bulbs but found the in really cold weather they would blow...
So we changed to the rough duty incandescent bulbs in trouble light holders....made for outside use....in a confined space they put out good bit of heat....I believe they make dual bulb trouble light also
we use the outdoor incandescent flood light bulbs in the well house in clip on fixtures..ours is tight block building with original hand dug 36" well inside....the current well is a 30" bored well which is outside the well house... but the pressure tank and such is in well house..so have to keep that warm also....and in brutal cold we use a very small space heater... which we run on super low.
Much better in long run to have the heat expenses rather than the water problems.

Yes! Electricity is still cheaper than paying hundreds for a plumbing repair.

And that's also another reason why I made sure to get a full basement this time around. It's tons easier for anyone, not just the really skinny guys, to work on the plumbing. Houses with crawl spaces in Iowa are just not recommended, unless they are meant for occasional use, like a hunting lodge or summer cottage.

I hate to admit it but I have a tendency to not finish projects on a timely basis. I get distracted. And Lordy I've got a 1/2 completed projects lingering in every room. OK, so it's cold outside. I don't want to trek out so I've made up my mind to work on projects and get a few things complete this week.

I did a DIY solar generator that I started a Faraday cage for and never finished. That's up first.
In a bath I removed the drywall from the studs behind the door, thinking I'd build a in-wall storage cubby there. That's next. Last, I have a beautiful puzzle that I want to glue up and frame as art. That should be easy - I have two large bottles of Modge Podge on hand. If I can get just these 3 projects complete this week I'd be doing the superiority walk.

I can relate, Toosh. I try to limit myself to one outside project and one inside project, but since I can't work outside, I've got two inside ones going right now. The closet will be finished in short order. The floor will take a little longer, but I'm determined not to move anything back into the room until it's finished. That's what got me into trouble before.

A little history: the room belonged to a stinky teenage boy, and I think he smoked pot back there. I had to change the ceiling fan, paint the ceiling, wash and paint the walls, pull the gross carpet, fix the underlying floor, seal it, and now I'm laying laminate flooring. At least the stink is totally gone!

Last steps are new baseboards, new curtain hardware/curtains, and maybe a new door. The present door has lots of dog teeth marks in it that wood filler and paint hasn't really helped. I'll see what the ReStore has, when it's time. I think I can still hang a light, interior door on my own!

We're finally getting more seasonal temps in our area. All the way up to 50, today. By Friday, we'll be 65! We trade the cold temps with rain, though. Supposed to start raining, tonight.

Lots of house chores to do today. I started off with a load of laundry. I put a chuck roast with potatoes in the crockpot for supper, tonight. I'll open a jar of my home grown and canned green beans, plus cornbread, to go with the roast and potatoes. We still have apple cobbler and ice cream for dessert. With all the ice and slush, the floors need mopping, badly, too.

Cary called and made an appt. for Frisco. It's Wednesday afternoon. He's due for shots, a heartworm check, and another 6 months of his heartworm med's, which they won't give without a heartworm check.

Mom has a doctor's appt. on Friday, so we'll be taking her to that in Big Town. It's just for a checkup. At 65 degrees, I can handle that, LOL.

I hope our mail starts getting delivered, today. I've been out of my MD medication for over a week, now. My prescription plan service comes by mail. Still waiting on FedEx and Walmart deliveries, too.

We finally got our order from walmart yesterday, fedx person said they are finally getting caught up. And our mail is caught up too. I don't blame the delivery people for not driving on icy roads, we just are not use to that here in the glorious south.

Its warmer but rainy. The temps will be warmer most of this week but at some point we will go back to too cold.

We pick up commodities today and will make a stop at walmart. There are only a few things I'll be picking up.

The kitchen is looking good, but still a few things to get organized and put somewhere else. I like to have a place for everything, but when you have more stuff than space its a challenge.

Since I started taking Curcumin again I'm feeling more like my old self.

Will be slow prepping this week and the next, when I will be out of town. Have a lot of stuff coming in for delivery. Got a new jacket, a new hoodie, some really warm socks and two pair of long underwear in today. I live in Florida, so those items aren't really for here, but I travel a lot and encounter a variety of weather conditions and decided I needed to increase my winter type clothing.

Publix has Tidy Cat litter on sale as a BOGO. Of course, you can't find any in the stores and we have hit 5 different stores already and found only 4 containers. We are starting to collect rain checks that are good for a month and hope to get anywhere from 12 to 20 containers. Four cats. We have plenty of food stockpiled for them, but were starting to run low on the litter.

Always have my eyes open for deals. Just not seeing many right now.

Busy day. But I did bite the bullet and order some of the things that would have made the past week easier. I'm still on the hunt for a good battery powered "camp shower head" that I can just drop into a 5 gallon bucket (or 10 or 15) so that warm showers would be available during a boil water advisory. I would be willing to invest in a 15 gallon barrel to provide a long warm shower.

I do find myself randomly wondering whether my Berkey or Sawyer could have handled things rather than boiling. But then I remind myself that this is one area that I'd rather be safe than sorry.

But, we have water pressure back to full. I turned the hot water heater back on. And I checked the meter. It looks like we made it through, fingers crossed and knock on wood, without any leaks. It seems quite a few of my neighbors were not quite so lucky.

I did ask FedEx to please find out where one of my missing packages is. It's the one full of medications and it needs to show up soon. Or they need to declare it lost so the pharmacy can take action to replace it.

Son was having a rough day to start. He wasn't even really happy at lunch time. Apparently he wanted a "mom gone" day. So I left him alone for the rest of the day. I guess it's time to go see if I'm forgiven for whatever it was that had him upset with me.

And I am seriously craving chocolate. It's been one of those weeks. But I think I'm going to go enjoy a hot cup of tea and a beat 'em up movie instead. Because I don't want to go out. Maybe tomorrow I'll order dinner.

Update on son. Went to check on him and he was still grumpy. So I asked him why he was grumpy and if he hadn't had a good day. He actually thought about it. And then I reminded him that he still had his putty and he'd had it all day.

That turned it. Suddenly there was a smile and he wanted tickles. And he's been in a good mood since then.

I am craving protein. I was slammed today. I ate lunch but breakfast and dinner were lacking. I finally just grabbed some peanut butter. I really need some serious time in the kitchen but I don't see that happening until Friday. I hope I can order bbq tomorrow. I think I'm just going to order meats.

We went late to pick up commodities and make a walmart stop. I haven't really looked at all we got in commodities yet. I did have to disperse several things to different freezers. Mostly stuff for my young friend that has 7 children.

It also looks like we got several canned foods. But I'm too tired to do anything with the stuff tonight. At one point I had to just about crawl to my chair, felt like I was going to fall out. I fell asleep for about an hour. DH got most of the cold stuff put in the fridgs. I'm going to wait until tomorrow to get things separated and put away.

I swear that when I was putting foods in the outside freezers that my hands just about froze, I tried to put on gloves but only managed to get one on before I collapsed in my chair. Even though the temps were in the 50's I was seriously cold. I'm looking forward to a few days reprieve from the cold.

I really wanted a king cake, but what wm had didn't impress me and it was $12. so I passed. I never can find things when I don't do a pick up, so I didn't get everything on my list. And when did inexpensive hand lotion get so high. I'm out of touch with several things because I've not had to buy them in the last two years or so. I never did find the unscented hand lotion but I did buy something, hopefully I will be able to stand it.

I see an early bed time for me tonight, but right now I'm wanting a nice hot cup of coffee.

The water being turned off was for a very short time, the boil order less than 24 hours so all is good. Never had such a fast turnaround. I didn't even need to open the bottled water. I did use the bucket of water to flush the toilet a couple of times while the water was orange.

I don't think there is a problem with showering during a boil order. I didn't when the water was orange due to chlorine shock. After the first 4 or so hours the water was light yellow so likely fine for showering.

Be careful about leaving faucets dripping. One year my kitchen drain froze (old house) but I had water. In the half bath next to the kitchen the water to the toilet froze but the drain worked. So, I washed dishes in dishpans in the kitchen sink and used the water to flush the toilet. A frozen drain could lead to a flooded kitchen or wherever.

Our temps are moderating over the next few days with above freezing during the day but dropping below freezing at night. Rain is also forecast which does not bode well.

I did a couple loads of wash today and ran a couple errands. No major accomplishments!! Each day I hope to get more done but so far it hasn't happened.

Thursday is our bi-monthly mobile pantry. It is always interesting what shows up in the box.

I tried a new recipe for split pea/potato soup which turned out quite good. Also, a new recipe for Mexican rice which is also good. The rice recipe called for 1 1/2 cups of rice which I will definitely reduce to 1 cup when I make it again. It was too much rice for the other ingredients plus just plain too much food for one. It makes a nice side dish as is, but I added peas to what I warmed up last night for a change. I'm thinking of fried rice next, maybe breakfast tomorrow.

The potatoes from my garden are done so I'll be using more rice. I do have instant potatoes (don't care for them), boxes of scalloped potatoes (they're okay) and cans of potatoes from Aldi (don't care for them). Fortunately, I'm able to eat the things "I don't care for" when necessary. Sure wish I could eat beans, but I so might as well quit wishing.

I discovered this morning that the extra exhaustion was due to the cold. I had a solid night of sleep and when the alarm went off there wasn't the instant desire to shut it off. And I don't feel like I need to just roll over and go back to sleep.

I'll take it. Hopefully I can check on garlic and onions today. The snow ice should be finished melting.

And it was honestly really nice to not have the sound of continuously dripping faucets in the background yesterday. If the system is back to normal today, I'm going to try to get laundry done. And I need to run and get son's prescription for one of his migraine meds. This one hadn't been filled yet.

Oh, I was expecting a call from FedEx telling me where the meds package was and when it would get here. Instead, it was dropped last night just before quit time. I was so happy to see that package.

Son crashed hard last night. He fell asleep early and barely woke up to take his meds. And I'm thinking that a spare humidifier needs to go into that short term bucket. Maybe a second one would have helped manage to keep the humidity in his room where he needs it. Head smack for having given the "spares" to the thrift but that is what it is. I will look for another but maybe in a design I like better. Having to flip the water tank was not a design I liked.

And I have some storm glasses on the list in general. I think having the visual will help prompt my brain better. And maybe actually teach him as well.

Our mail finally managed to run last night at 8:30 pm. It was a load, too. I got my much needed MD medication and my Medicare card. Walmart also delivered one of the packages we ordered. Still waiting on FedEx and Walmart's other package. It rained last night, so all evidence of ice is gone.

Cary and I have been on the phone all morning getting all my Medicare stuff set up. My Medicare goes into effect May 1st. I can't sign up for MediGap, until Feb.1st. I'll be glad when all of this is done and over with. It's nerve racking to me. I'm sure glad that Cary is here to help me with all of this. So, basically, Cary's and mine will be the same, except I have to go with Plan G where Cary has Plan F.

Rain forecast for every day, except Friday. That's good, since it'll be the first time I'm out of the house in over 2 weeks. It's supposed to be all the way up to 69 that day, unless they change it again. My kind of temps. and sunshine.

It's currently 32 and very foggy. The fog is forecast to lift around noon which it is right now but still foggy. High today to be 34. While I do not like the gloomy weather, I'm more concerned about the rain forecast for the next few days with temps hovering around freezing during the day and dropping below at night. Not a good scenario!

I finally have the pork loin thawed and will be canning it this afternoon. Next project likely will be the bags of chicken hind quarters and legs (some of quarters and some bags of legs). That is a longer harder project as I have to cook the chicken, take it off the bones/skin, dice, jar and then can. I then cook the bones/skin for bone broth and can that. The pork loin is simpler cut, stuff in jars and can.

I have a pile of dirty dishes I will do while the canner is going.

Glad to hear everyone got their meds. I used to get mine by mail but now use local pharmacy. Two reasons -- keeping the pharmacy open and not worrying about when the mail will arrive. Mine RX are supposed to be on auto refill but so far that hasn't happened. They are due for refill this month, so I'll cross my fingers yet again that it works.

Right now, I don't have a choice with my mail prescription drug plan, because of my insurance. This only includes maintenance drugs that are also auto-refill every 3 months. Once, I'm on Medicare, that will all change. Because of all the icing, this is the first time I've had any problems with receiving my meds on time. All of our mail has been stuck up in Memphis, until now. No mail here for over a week because of it.

We just received our second Walmart package. Now, we're just waiting on FedEx for our last package.

Its 63 and rainy all day and night for the next several days and then no rain and colder. I don't ever remember wishing for warmer weather because I hate the hot summers. But I'm tired of being cold. I was able to take my second pair of socks off this morning, that extra pair makes it difficult to get my slippers on.

In commodities we were given several bags of salad shrimp, two 10# bags of new potato size potatoes. I've never seen that size in 10# bags. Lots of canned foods. Most of this will go to my friend with the 7 young children.

We get our prescriptions mailed to us. Because its not automatic I'm able to order a few days early, which has allowed me to have extra put back, so we never run out. I constinusly thank God we have the VA and don't have to have medicare.

I have never run out of any of my medications, until this ice event. They are very good at getting the refills to me way before I've run out. Plus, I only have the MD medication, one Lupus medication, and Trazadone (that helps me relax and sleep at night). I only take a half dose of Trazadone at night, so that helps me have lots extra, too. I like having my med's delivered right to my door. It saves having to make a special trip into town to pick them up. When one lives as far out as we do, all unnecessary trips into town are avoided when possible. I hate that this setup will change, once Medicare kicks in.

Most of my prescriptions are online due to insurance. Son's are local but they will mail them from the pharmacy. Since the pharmacy is actually nowhere near most of my other errands, I frequently ask them to mail them. We are outside of the physical delivery zone.. But today I'm going to pick up one of son's meds that ran out during the freeze. If the van starts. Fingers crossed.

I hadn't realized just how cold my body must have felt, despite thermals and sweaters. And multiple blankets at night. And my muscles are clearly letting me know just how tight they had been. I think it's time to have the AC folks come out for their twice yearly system check. About 5 years ago we had an issue where the thermostat said the AC was at a certain temp but it actually wasn't holding that temp. I don't want a repeat.

Son is "ruling the world" today. He has the big tv on his favorite movies and is bouncing around the house. I keep getting visits with requests. And he's being pretty clear about things. I'll take it after the last week of grumpy son. If the van starts and we go out, I'll hopefully be getting BBQ from a place near the pharmacy. I need to deal with the protein cravings. And I'd really like a break from cooking tonight.

Despite the warmer weather and rain, there is still ice in shady areas. So hopefully the roads I will be on will be clear.

I like having my scripts delivered too. I also take trazadone for sleeping and I vary my dose, I have a supply that would hold me for awhile. Even when we are at the VA we usually have them mail what ever the doc may prescribe unless its something DH needs to take immediately. There is never anything I need to start taking immediately, I'm blessed.

When I went to the doctor with the spider bites, I had to have those scripts filled right then. That was the first time in like forever I've had to do that. I used Good RX at Walmart. It didn't cost much for those prescriptions, but some of those maintenance drugs I mentioned taking are free under my prescription plan. My MD medication and the Trazadone are the free ones.

Mid-30s and overcast. Everything is melting.

I took my walk at the mini-mall two towns over. We're back to icy patches on the sidewalks, typical January weather. We were very blessed in November and December to have clear sidewalks.

I've got a small pot of vegetable beef mushroom soup simmering on the top of the stove. It wasn't originally on today's project list, but I cleaned out the fridge and found leftovers that needed to be used right away, plus the house could stand a little more humidity.

Looks like I can work from home on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Yea! That will save some gas. I've got to finish the floor in the office soon so I can move back in there. Right now, my home office is in the living room, which isn't working out at all, but I'm committed to not moving anything back until I finish the floor this time. I have about 8 more rows, so off I go! :geek:

Van started and ran beautifully. I love my van. We got to the pharmacy just before they closed for lunch. Then we stopped at Lawler's BBQ since they were close and all the local stuff is closed. I hadn't realized just how hungry I was until that scent hit the van. Good thing I ordered extra.

Son made it almost all the way home before the migraine hit hard enough to need the med that I had just picked up. Stubborn son. I had offered him the med half an hour earlier and he turned it down. But he was also happy to be home. He's not one for much time out of the house anymore. One of the COVID quarantine side effects.

I noticed that the pharmacy was posting a notice for ILI (influenza like illnesses). I know there is the flu and COVID. Is there another flu like illness making the rounds?

Cary has been figuring up our federal income taxes. We barely slid in under the amount allowed without having to pay any. We don't have to file. Glad of that! Next year might be a different story, since we both got raises. We don't pay state taxes, because of age. 65 is the cut off age for those. Cary will be 72 in August. We haven't had to pay those in a while. No property taxes after 65, either. So, we're good to go for another year on taxes.

Chicken Noodle casserole tonight for supper. It's one of those occasions I use a can of cream of chicken soup. I love making casseroles. I have lots of recipes on hand that we like. Either a casserole, or a one skillet meal along with a salad and bread of some kind makes for a simple meal without a lot of cleanup. I've never owned a dishwasher and don't have one now. Anything to make cleanup easier, I'll take it.

I'm on a quest to spend less money. In January I spent about $180 at Walmart and I'm not sure what on amazon. I have skipped my subscribe and save order for January and may wait until the latter part of February to order anything else. Plans change in life but I'll make an effort.

We got frozen strawberries in commodities. DH put a package in the bullet and I'm sure he added a little sugar. It came out like the strawberry topping you seen restaurants to put on ice cream. I ate a small bowl of it and it tasted like heaven. DH said it would be good on cake but he has no cake.

We got 4 cans of Organic cheese ravioli from HEB in commodities. I tried a can and the other 3 cans will go in the box for my friend. Children will eat almost anything.

DH had left over cabbage and sausage and I had the cheese ravioli, so our meals are done for the day.

Its 62 outside and really raining, looks like the area is under a flood watch. We live on a hill so we are okay. Its 82 here at my desk and the heat ran DH out of the front room where is computer is. Our woodstove is a champ.
