We have had a warm day here with mist all day. Feels like spring after last week! Shingles mostly gone. Found an immune supplement program to help to suppress them. Lemon balm tea was very soothing and CS mixture seemed to help reduce the inflammation especially in my mouth. As shingles seems to be a problem that I may have to deal with often I have plans to add what I can to my medicinal garden. I will keep you updated! Just curious as to what herbalists you guys may follow. I am depending heavily on Stephen Buhner. Better choices?

Yeah - ask me to pick my favorite child too! Buhner is great for all things infective, but I also like 7 Song, Kat McKinnon, Lisa Ganora, Sam Coffman, Ryan.... seaweed guy who's last name I can't remember, so many - it depends on what you're looking for and honestly, your educational level in herbs. Lisa might be a bit much if you are just starting.

Lemon balm is amazing, but it is a mint, so it will grow best from starts. I did get seeds from Strictly Medicinals and Baker Creek and both sprouted and did well, though. Give it some love the first few years, and it will do amazing. If I was just starting a medicinal garden, my go-tos would be elderberry (LOTS of it!), mints (lemon balm, peppermint, spearmint, catnip), calendula, marshmallow.

I do have those plants plus many others. My friend and I share our skills and types of plants, seeds, and dirt. It is a win win situation for both of us and she has "brewed" for many years! Added 4 more elderberries this fall and actually potted up turmeric and ginger today. Thank you for the herbal guys recommendation! I will look into them all!

Oh, I also forgot Matthew Wood, Rosemary Gladstar, Dr. Sharol Tilgner. I'm sure I'll think of others. Kat has a blog called 'Meet the Green' with another herbalist, Brianna Wood? Lisa does things on FB and tiktok (?) and has a class called 'herbal constituents'. If you love chemistry, Lisa is the one you want. Sam Coffman is 'the herbal medic' = he was a special forces medic before he started his herbal business.

Our winter weather is taking a break. It was almost 50* when I got up this morning. Snow and ice are finally all gone, but now we have mud. The ice storm was not as heavy as predicted thank goodness. Only a few power outages across the state. We rose above freezing and the rain melted the snow and ice. We aren't even supposed to get below freezing at night for the next 5-6 days.

We have to replenish the wood racks on the porch. We used a lot when it was extremely cold. The internet weather guys are already talking about the cold returning the 2nd week of February. I need to start trimming fruit trees now also.

While the weather was awful, I got out some of my mending and did a couple of pieces. I also finished a book I had started. I found that with each cold front that came in, I did not feel good. So those days I didn't get a lot done. We went to our daughter's house to stay with the kids a couple of times. Daughter had a dr appointment one day and the littlest had one the other day. I caught up some of daughter's house work while I was there. It was nice to be able to help her out. Grandpa enjoyed playing with the kids so I could get some stuff done.

I noticed in our Kroger add, the regular price of Ritz crackers has gone up .50 cents since last weeks add. Last week they were buy 6 and save .50 cents an item. The sale price was 2.99. This week the sale price is still 2.99. But you have to buy 6 to save 1.00 each. It's getting harder to keep the pantry full with out breaking the bank.

I bought a sack of wheat to try sprouting for my chickens. I am going to try it for a bit. It will at least give them some greens while there isn't much outside to forage. I will let them free range today. It's been over a week since they have been out.

Have a blessed day everyone

Our power has been out since 11:00 pm last night. The temps are warmer and we have the wood stove so we are okay. I have my chair plugged into my smallest jackery so I can operate it. To save on the battery I keep it turned off when I’m not going up or down.

We have had heavy rain all night and expect the same for the next 24 hours.

The power people have been working because the power has blinked a time or two

My day 'off', except i have to go into work for about 5 hours! Still ticking along here. DH has the flu, or something. He's getting better, but still kinda puny. I made a breakfast casserole with some leftover cranberry orange muffins - it wasn't too bad. But now I need to finish my coffee and head out to work.

It's pouring rain with thunder here this morning. We're also under a flood watch through tomorrow night. We need all this rain, so I won't complain. Temps are more seasonal, too. High of 64, today. It started raining last night. We live on a ridge with 2 creeks that surround us on all sides. All will be ok as long as the 2 bridges aren't flooded out. If that happens, we're stuck, until the water recedes. That has happened a few times, but I don't think it will this time.

Today is Frisco's trip to the vet. He hates going, but our vets are very good with him. He gets all kinds of treats when he goes. Cary will take him in his Jeep. Frisco thinks the Jeep belongs to him, anyway. He goes everywhere with Cary when he goes in the Jeep. Cary can just rattle his keys, and he heads straight for the front door.

I'm doing more laundry and light household chores, today. Nothing really needs doing, so I'll just piddle. No ground beef to can. I haven't done any in a while. I have lots in the freezer. Cary and I don't really like the taste of canned ground beef. I have several cases, enough to do us a year, but I'm not going to be canning as much of that anymore. It's ok for use in some sauces, but not in everything. Plus, I have several cases of Keystone ground beef that I only use with saucy food, too. I'm not a big fan of it, either. I haven't opened and tried any of the Keystone beef chunks and pulled pork, yet.

I've started my next month's grocery and shopping lists. I'll go around the 1st. It's always a big load, but that's it for the whole month, plus extras if I come across good sales. We go to the meat market that day as well for the month. I wouldn't even have to do a middle of the month trip if it weren't for running out of all the fresh produce I buy. I just can't get it to last a whole month. Cabbages, potatoes, cukes, tomatoes, lettuce, yellow squash, carrots, different fruits, etc.

Our power is still out but we waited 12 hours to turn on the generator. It was okay with out the generator on, except my larger jackery would not power the coffee pot, which was probably the nudge to turn on the generator. Its hard to do something on the wood stove because we have a big cast iron pot on the back side and a fan on the front. Hard, very hard, to move either one of those when they are hot.

I need to get my off grid coffee making out and give it a try on my gasone. I could have warmed some of the day old coffee on my little tea light thingie but DH poured it out.

Our community water had 2 main breaks last night. Neither affected our water, but it's out at DS's house. He called at daylight this morning asking if we had water. They have an excellent water catchment and purification system set up, plus cases and cases of bottled water. They'll be fine.

When I was in Walmart on Monday I noticed several areas that were sparse. And several things in the vegetable category, like diced potatoes and mixed vegetables, were on a top shelf and hard to reach, and there wasn't much of it. Several small size of something was out all together unless you wanted to pay for the name brand, which I don't. It was paper plates so I got the next size up. I keep some in storage but replace what we use monthly.

I've been so tempted to get plastic forks and spoons, but I just don't much like to use them, so so far I've resisted. I do have a big bucket of them somewhere. I think they came from DH's house in Illinois. I don't need them but I hate washing dishes. I've even gone almost completely to disposable bowls. And we haven't used a regular plate in many months.

I've had a dishwasher a time or two in my adult life but haven't in the last several years.

I've managed to squirel away a few dollars this month, its been awhile.

The last time I was in Walmart, some things were pretty sparse, too. Since they renovated and are finally done with that, things are much different. Instead of having almost a whole aisle of a certain product, like canned veggies, there is only a small section, now. Other items in the store are like that. What they do have are mostly name brand products.

Cary and I have a deal for dishwashing. He agrees to wash. I rinse, dry, and put away everything. Works out very well for us. I don't mind washing dishes, myself, as long as I haven't messed up half the kitchen that has to be washed. We wash the dishes every night after supper. Sometimes, dishes get washed twice a day if we mess up some for lunch. I don't like to start cooking supper with an already full sink of dirty dishes. I wash those, myself. Most folks aren't as OCD as I am, though.

I keep a lot of paper plates, bowls, cups, and utensils in storage, but they only get used in emergencies for the most part.

Buying groceries with one big load once a month, I'm saving money, still.

DH is so good in so many ways but he does not wash dishes nor does he clean up after himself in the kitchen. When he cooks he makes a mess and sometimes it takes me awhile to get over being aggravated about it and getting it cleaned up. on the other hand he is so johnny on the spot about taking care of most things that I'm getting better about being a being aggravated at him. Except for dishes he takes care of the other things without hesitation. So shame on me for getting upset. I pray about it.

We are away for a week. Realized a couple issues in my packing.

First off, I should have included some of my cloth shopping bags. Packed flat they would not take a lot of space.
we made a grocery store run and hauling groceries up to your room is much easier with real bags. Going to start keeping a couple of them in the car too.
I have empty space in suitcase and took advantage of buy one get ones.

secondly, I should have double checked all bottles. What I thought was a full bottle of Excedrin was half Excedrin and half turmeric. Normally we don't use Excedrin much but we are doing 5 days of theme parks and DH hurts like heck at days end.

should have incl some tea packets in my packing. Rooms have coffee pots but no tea is provided here.

Should we travel more I will be replacing our largest suitcase with one that rolls better. We checked all luggage. I know, if something happens there goes everything. I had packed a carryon with essentials but just wanted to keep it easy.

Once Cary retired, he volunteered to start helping me with the dishes. I hesitated, but finally gave in. He's also good about picking up after himself, too. I don't complain when he doesn't. I never nag him about anything. Learned not to do that early on. Sometimes, I have to remind him of something, but never nag. He does all the outdoor work both winter and summer and does all the upkeep on our house and property. Does all the firewood. I can't complain about anything he does. I help with the small gardens and work all my flower beds and pots, plus do 100% of the housework. The one thing Cary doesn't do and that is cook, but he says that we both mess up the dishes, so it's only fair that he helps with the cleanup afterwards.

DH does lots of things...he still works full time... does firewood....and brings it in...all kinds of outdoor chores.....all the normal male stuff..
he also cooks... that makes me very happy because both of us had fathers that could not cook....
When he was young his grandmother lived with them and did a lot of the cooking...he hung out with his grandmother in the kitchen and she taught him the basics...I have continued to teach him things
We are on the East Coast and his parents moved to the Phoenix area of AZ....his Mom passed first and his Dad either ate out or ate nuke meals from the grocery store...for several years before he passed...not really good

Cary can't stand those frozen tv type dinners. Since he can't cook much of anything, he would probably eat out of a can or go to McD's, or the little deli in our community. Not the best way to eat, but he just isn't interested in doing the cooking, or learning how. I won't push it on him, either. He's almost 72, so it's almost too late for him to start learning.

I did not get the pork loin done yesterday as planned, but it is now done. One loin made seven pints although I did not fill the jars to the max. Only one person does not need a fully packed pint unless they want to eat it four days in a row. Canning meat is so darned easy except for the length of time to process. I discovered that the timer on my stove goes to 150 and then skips to 200. I needed 175.

It's been gloomy all day and we are now under a fog alert. Low is supposed to be 33 which is what it is currently. Tomorrow the low is forecast to be 31 so if we get the rain, it could be a mess very quickly. Lots of melting today.

Tomorrow is the mobile food pantry. It's always interesting what we get -- sometimes good, sometimes so-so and occasionally a bleh. In September we received two one-pound packages of the best ground beef I've had in years. Only time we've received ground beef. Ground turkey or pork fairly often but not gb. I don't care for ground turkey but do like the ground pork. Still unless it's something that I hate or something I'm not supposed to eat, I eat it.

My late dh helped with dishes when asked. When he first became disabled and I was working full time, he insisted that I leave the dishes for him. It didn't take much convincing!! His cooking amounted to popcorn and coffee. He'd also do toast and make his own lunch sandwich. Cooking he never did, not so much as a fried egg. My dad's cooking was limited to fried eggs that were always crispy. When my sister was born, I was 11 and recall calling my grandmother to fix us a meal. Other grandmother lived next door and NEVER EVER offered to help with anything.

This morning went well. The afternoon... well I now have a headache.

I'm going to go make dinner and curl up for a while. I have a package to open. And then, if my head has stopped pounding, I may work some more.

Son was feeling off. I think his body is just as exhausted from the swings. But he is still ruling the tv. And he loves the Lawlers BBQ, even cold. It may be motivation for me to get going on learning to use the smoker this spring.

Anyways, off to eat. And hopefully feel better. Heart doctor appt is in the morning. Fingers crossed for good news.

Slight front moving in and I have a headache now. Since having surgery and the inside of my face rearranged, the changes in barometric pressure are starting to bother me. I wish I could work from home tomorrow, but I have an MRI and several meetings to attend 'in person'. Friday, I plan on staying home.

Looking at the Safeway ad, prices are really going thru the roof. LOL Butter is over $6/lb. Milk is on sale for 97c per half gallon, but the limit is now 3 instead of 4.

The temps hit the mid-30s again today. The snow pack is quickly melting.

Worked away from home today, but I managed to get the 2025 registration tag on the car license plate, the new registration in my glove compartment, along with the new car insurance card. Trivial, but very important, and I've been known to forget about those tasks, but I've started to write them on my calendar with the big squares.

I also wrote the check for Plan G (medicare) and tacked that up on the board so I mail it at the end of the month, and activated my new ATM card for 2024, which also came today. Those are the little annoying tasks that will trip me up later if I don't tend to them now.

That's about it for home stuff. Today the focus was on paying work and getting in my walk. The sidewalks were wet but clear, so I was able to walk around the retention pond at work before I came home. There's still a lot of geese around that didn't go farther south this year. I like to watch them when they aren't on my property! They are messy.

Right now, it's very foggy, as in visibility down to something like 1/4 mile. I'm very thankful that I don't have to go anywhere. I'm going to watch part of a movie and then go bed early. My energy has been getting better, but tonight I'm whipped.

For some things DH is a better cook than I am, like frying things. I did not learn to fry on purpose because its unhealthy. I seared meat and made a thin gravy with arrowroot starch. My family loved it that way. And both of my sons are good cooks, particularly the oldest, might be the Italian in him. For awhile he was part owner in an Italian Restaurant.

Dh makes a to die for grilled cheese and I never learned and not interested in learning. Dh likes his mcdonald's too, thinks a big mac gives him a salad, LOL.

My mother's last husband could not cook. And I swear towards the end she just about starved him to death. He has wasted away to almost nothing when he died. My mother was very selfish.

The rain has let up although its not over. The temps tonight will be in the high 50's and the mid 60's tomorrow with less rain. I let the wood stove go out, but DH will restart it in the morning.

Its such a blessing for the power to be back on, tv is boring and I can't seem to settle in on a book. Oh well, God is good all the time.

Well, no more work. But a wonderful, long, hot shower. That felt so good that I didn't want to get out.

Yeah, boil advisory canceled. Took about 5 minutes for the water to lose the light, dirty tint. But so worth it.

Son is being sassy. Lots of smiles. He took a long nap this afternoon. I think his body needed the rest to recover from the migraine that kept peaking last week.

Morning all!
Sounds like it has been a busy week for all of you. I always enjoy hearing how everyone is doing and the progress you all are making. This is my fav place of the board!
I haven’t done much prep wise this week. Just working away.

Hubby and I have been making a bunch of soups and freeze extras, and this has helped dramatically with our monthly grocery budget. We are also having weekly big salads for dinner that he has grown in the greenhouse which has helped as well. He is retired (at a young age) and gardening has been his outlet over the past few years. His greenhouse was an addition he built this past year, and it is working beautifully.

I haven’t done much prep wise in terms of buying things. I am working hard at being even more frugal than I normally am and have challenged myself to a few more savings challenges. I am trying to remind myself that even very small steps will add up over time. (i.e. - if I pull and tuck away $20 a paycheck, I will have an additional $3120 in savings …. I am projecting to 59 1/2). This is in addition to my normal budget. So ….. we will see ….

We have the rain coming in today/tomorrow.

Slow and steady. Hope everyone has a blessed day!

It's still pouring rain this morning. Rained all night. Traffic is still on the road out front, so I know the bridges aren't flooded. That's a good thing. We have to get out tomorrow for Mom's doctor appointment. No rain forecast for tomorrow, but again on Saturday. Temps will remain seasonal.

Frisco got his yearly checkup, yesterday. He was in fine shape, overall. Weighs 75 lbs. No heartworms, so he got another 6 months of his heartworm med's. He does have a small bump/sore on his hind leg that he was given antibiotics for. Cary ask if it could be a spider bite, and vet said he didn't think it was. Just a sore that had gotten infected. It doesn't seem to be causing him any trouble. I've been watching it, but he is determined not to let me doctor on him. I get a growl every time I try.

Received the rest of our packages, yesterday. We now have new books to read, a year's worth of Cary's vitamins and supplements, more DVD's to watch (series), and more printer ink.

I've been trying to cut costs on my monthly shopping bill, too. I'm on a strict budget. Budgeting has been a lifestyle choice for us from the beginning. I've managed to get my spending down, so that I have money left over from my budget every month. That goes into our emergency fund. Granted, with the higher prices, I'm not able to save as much as I once did, but it's something. We're still trying hard to put back into savings what we took out for the SUV. That is going much slower than what we expected. At this rate, we might not get it all replaced any time soon. Doesn't mean we won't keep trying.

We had tacos with ground beef, cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes plus taco sauce last night for supper. Cary will get leftovers for his lunch, today. I don't know, yet, what I'll make for tonight. Probably something straight out of the pantry.

The rain has stopped for the time being and as SB said, seasonal temps, which works for me. I'll take Louisiana winters over any where else. Which of course means hot summers, I'll try not to complain about that so much this year.

I went outside brisk not cold to see the big oak that fell. We are on a hill and it fell down hill away from several things, thank you Jesus. It did fall on a fence so DH is out there cutting it of the fence. He will have lots more fire wood to cut up.

I wasn't going to do a subscribe and save this month but a put a few things back on it, total under $50. I have a hard time with some things thinking what I have will be that last I can get. But I do need to watch my spending and put more money back, it does add up. Having extra cash on hand comes in handy. I'm dependent on SS and a small VA check, my 401K ran out several years ago.

Happy dance. I went in expecting to hear things to tell me that I had read the test results wrong. Instead, what I heard was that I had read them correctly. It isn't often that I see a doctor shocked.

Ran errands. Back home. Going to eat lunch and then get back to work. Smiling because that was good news.

Still flooding rain coming down, and there is an awful thunderstorm right on top of us. Our power is blinking. Cary let the wood heater go out overnight, but I'm chilled. He may have to start it up again. Even at 68 for our high, today, it's really damp making it feel much colder in the house.

You are getting what we had day before yesterday that took out our power. Prayerfully you won't lose yours. Since I'm not cold natured these temps work for me. I even went out in a tank top and flip flops (pj bottom).

I've kinda got my sleep pattern messed up. I'm going to sleep later and sleeping half the morning away. DH gets up hours before I do. I'm so sound asleep that I don't hear him walking through the room, he's very considerate about that.

It's in the 50's today with no rain so far. I thought today would be a good day to weed the raspberry, blackberry, and blueberry bushes. I knew if I got those weeded and the vineyards, lay cardboard down, fertilize and mulch, I'm way ahead in the spring. It also helps with spring fever!

Normally, we get up between 5:30-6:00, but since we were iced in last week, we were sleeping in, until around 7 and 7:30 am. That has got to stop. Yeah, it makes for a shorter day with less time to get things done. We didn't get up til around 7 this morning. I might have to set our alarm clock for in the morning, so we'll have time to get up and get ready for Mom's dr. appt. LOL. Can't afford to sleep late.

The thunderstorm has passed without any loss of power. It was quick and violent. The kind that can cause those little spin up tornadoes. No damage, here.

The computer network is down again at my second job, so I've had most of today off.

Still in the mid-30s, overcast (foggy). The sidewalks are clear! I was able to take my walk in the area, without having to drive anywhere, which I would do because safety and daily walks are both priorities, but it's nice when I can just walk around the neighborhood without worrying about icy patches.

Tired today, but I'm down to about three more rows on the office floor. These will be hard because there's a door jamb on the last row, which was already cut in the other two rooms. I've been watching youtubes on how to cut it. The guys seem to have all of these power tools! I have a hand jamb saw. If I were doing more of these, I'd get an electric one, but I just need to make these two cuts. But it's got to be right the first time! Argh!

Lunch is a hot sandwich from my last slice of leftover meatloaf. Yum!

We both love hot leftover meatloaf sandwiches with a slice of cheese on it! It's been a while, since I've made meatloaf. It's always a hit or miss with mine falling apart.

SB, I make mine with 1/2 cup of some sort of filler (oatmeal, crumbled crackers, or cooked and mashed navy beans) and a small egg, well-beaten. Mine doesn't fall apart. I suspect the egg is all it needs as a binder, but I generally add filler to stretch it.

Also, I slice the loaf into about 1/2 - 3/4 inch slices as soon as it's cool. I think that helps, too.

I use 3/4 cup of plain bread crumbs and 2 eggs, 1/3 cup of ketchup, plus a packet of Beefy Lipton onion soup mix. I just follow the instructions on the back of the box of the soup mix. I might need to make it one cup of bread crumbs, instead. I like a firm meatloaf. I like the flavor of this recipe the best, but it usually falls apart.

Try 1 cup of crumbs and 3 eggs (especially if the eggs are small). That won't impact the flavor. I'll bet that will be firmer. I don't add ketchup to mine until after it's on the plate.

Also, I prefer about a teaspoon of A-1 sauce (as opposed to ketchup) on the cut slice. I spread it over the top if I'm making a sandwich.

I went to check on the root cellar which I do every few days just because it is new to us. The temps had been cold for us just as for many of you and now it is in the 60's with lots of rain. Rain and the root cellar has not been a problem in the past but everything was damp this morning and we think it is because the vegetables are sweating. Haven't lost anything and at present we have a fan on everything so we don't lose any thing but I guess we need to go back to the drawing board maybe insulating more? I am unsure but hubs has a plan! He is presently adding a can light or 2 to my cooking area. I need lots of light!
I ordered some pretty cool cup hangers for inside the cabinet. The cool part is they just slip on the shelf. Sure did free up and tidy up the space for me! I have lots of bulbs to plant and it is time in my area but it has been raining since about 10p last night so I have pushed that task off.
Dreaming of a beautiful bountiful garden!
