I'm very sure that they appreciate the help, Judy!

I'm still tired from yesterday's work on bagging up a portion of the giant leaf pile at daughter's house, so I'm grateful for the rain this morning. It means I won't be able to get out in to the garden for a day or so, but not having to water is worth it. The rain is slowing down a bit - I just checked and we are supposed to have a couple of hours before the next wave goes through, but it is still supposed to stop by 3 pm, with a total of 1/4" of rain. Then we have 4 days before it starts in again. Today and tomorrow are supposed to be cool - temps aren't getting out of the mid 60's today, and only get up in to the low 70's for a few hours on Monday. It might hit the low 80's for an hour or so on Tuesday & Wednesday, then mid 80's on Thursday and Friday, with thunderstorms starting in Friday afternoon. Hopefully the gardens will dry up enough that I can get everything else I want to get planted in before the next round of thunderstorms hit; and also hopefully I can get the rest of the giant leaf pile taken care of by then.

The last several months have been so stressful, it will really feel good to actually get something positive done!

Today, I'm mostly going to rest and recuperate - both mind and body need it. Tomorrow, I plan to go to the pool if my neighbor lady is back from her trip; if not, I'll work around the house - I need to declutter. I need to carry books back downstairs to the shelves - and actually put them on the shelves where they belong. I need to restock the cleaning supplies on the main floor and do an inventory before I carry any extras down to the store room and rotate them. I also need to inventory the pet supplies - food, litter, etc... I need to go through the grandsons' dressers and closet too - both have had a growth spurt. Middle grandson's clothing he keeps here is already migrating to younger grandson's dresser so that helps a bit. I'll take the too small items to the thrift store in daughter's town when I go back to work on the giant leaf pile - and will hopefully pick up some more items to replenish their closet here, though they don't need as many clothes for here as they did when they were here more often. Nowadays, they'd rather have Grandma come stay with them at their house when daughter isn't home so that they have their friends nearby and all their electronics and what not.

I did stop by the thrift store on Saturday to look for some tank tops to work outside in; didn't find anything for myself but did get youngest grandson a very cool Hawaiian shirt with surfboards on it; he'll probably roll his eyes but will wear it to please me - if we go somewhere no one knows him  Middle grandson was with me and actually picked out a few shirts while we were there - all with the logo of his school's sports teams.

I also need to inventory the pantries - really REALLY need to inventory the pantries  I know that I need to rotate some home canned and store bought items from the store room downstairs in to the current use pantry on the main floor - it's starting to look pretty skimpy! That will give me room to move recently home canned and purchased items down to the store room as well.

Well, I'm not getting much of anything done - maybe I need another cup of coffee to boost the energy level before I succumb to a mid-morning nap!

Take care all; stay safe out there!

Dragging this morning...my back started hurting the minute I got out of bed. I don't know what I did to tweak it, but some ibuprofen and a soak I the hot tub helped a little.

There's lots on the to-do list, but we got a bit of rain last night and the ground is still soggy. I will try to get my currant bush planted and some other plants. I need to work on some herbal medicine to ship out as well.

We're expecting severe thunderstorms today, so we got out in the gardens early. I gathered more peppers. It looks like I'm going to have a bumper crop of them, both banana and bell. I've got a lot of chopping to do for the freezer. We had a bad storm blow through last night, too. Lots of rain.

I came back in the house and folded and put away all the clean laundry from yesterday. I also made up my bacon wrapped chicken breasts to bake tonight for our supper. I had bacon left in the pack, so I went ahead and cooked it to use as bacon bits to go in the potato salad, also for tonight. I'm just now getting the kitchen and dishes all cleaned up and put away.

While I had my hands all in the bacon and chicken, LifeLock sent me a text alert. So, I had to stop what I was doing and take care of all that mess. It would be so much easier dealing with people on the phone if they could just halfway speak ENGLISH! Someone was trying to open an unauthorized account.

I'm taking a break to rest while Cary is napping. My back and knee are hurting. I might soak in the tub with hot water and Epsom salt later.

Sherree... if you do a lot of peppers or onions for the freezer or dehydrator, consider getting one of these...

Mine saves me many hours of knife work when processing bushels of bell peppers for seed and dehydrating.

Summerthyme

Thanks, Summerthyme! I've seen those but didn't know how well they work. I've finally got all mine chopped and in the freezer.

I've got 6 #10 cans of dehydrated bell peppers that I use often, but I like using frozen ones, too. I've already got 3 gallons of them in the freezer so far. I'm sure I'll be giving some of them away.

I've been stocking up on some more odd preps lately. I ordered another ring (seal) for my pressure canner after I put a new one in. So I am one ahead. I've been ordering from TEMU and just love their version of the dollar store. I ordered a lot of needles for barter, candle wicks, plastic storage containers of all kinds, first aid supplies of all kinds, toilet paper tablets, collapsible cups, sun hats, silicone bakeware and even a soap mold. I've also gotten cheap toys for the grandkids and some clothing. I would probably stay away from most of the clothing, as it is more polyester than cotton, but I have gotten some shorts that I like. I also bought some stuff for travel for some upcoming trips. It is all cheap Chinese crap that I don't expect to last forever, but will come in handy for now. I think I am pretty well stocked on all the extra stuff now. A couple of big purchases that would be nice to have are on the list next, then some silver if it can be found.

The storms kept going around us. Despite all the warnings, it was almost 8 pm before the first of the rain fell. Now the garden is getting deeply watered.

Steam distillation unit is supposed to arrive on Wednesday. Fingers crossed I can run spearmint on Friday afternoon.

Our forecast of all day showers on Saturday ended with a tiny shower that hardly wet the sidewalk and showers for Sunday were taken out of the forecast. There is no rain in the forecast for the whole week. I feel like I wasted my flower seeds I planted with the hopes of rain.

My potatoes are blooming like crazy. I still haven't mulched them as I've spent so much time trying to deal with the tree problem plus a couple of other issues. I HATE making phone calls!! I also hate political phone calls which have started for the 2024 election already. Those I hang up on, but I still have to answer the phone.

I took inventory of my OTC supplements/meds today so now I need to sit down and figure what I need to buy to bring my supplies back to 1 year. I would like more than a year but I'm looking at around $2,000 to $3,000 for the tree removals plus six-month car insurance premium is due this month. The tree expenses are screwing up my prepping plans big time. I also need a new pair of shoes as part of preps and they will cost at least $160 based on price two years ago.

I have two battery watches and one had a dead battery. That watch has a bad band, and I haven't been able to find a replacement band however I found another old watch that is absolutely dead that has a new band. I realized having two working watches for my preps would be a good idea so got a new battery and will switch out the bands soon. I realized I'd never considered having a working watch as an important prep.

A lot of my clothing is getting quite shabby but I don't care. I have enough good stuff for church and reasonably decent for Bible study and shopping so I'm not planning on replacing any of that. What I need are jeans and sweatpants for next winter. I can make sweatpants, but my machine will not handle layers of jeans fabric. I must have elastic waist jeans and I simply cannot find any that aren't mostly polyester. I want denim and good weight denim for winter. I have a lifetime supply of knit shirts and those are easy to find at thrift shops. One of my favorite knit tops is very old but still looks like new -- I recently got to thinking and I realized I bought it the summer my dad died so in 2002!!

We got hit with a severe thunderstorm last night. It produced a radar indicated tornado about 8 miles from us after it passed our house. Lots more rain. We had 3 different thunderstorm warnings for our part of the county last night. Today is supposed to be nice, but the rest of the week rain every day. I've got laundry to do today, so I can hang them out to dry. I probably won't get another chance to do it the rest of the week.

We have to pick Mom up for her doctor's appt and CT scan at 8am in the morning. This will probably take all day. She can't have anything to eat after midnight tonight, until after her scan. She'll want to get something to eat afterwards, so we'll do that, too. before taking her home.

The 15th is our normal day to do our twice a month grocery shopping. Since I bought for the whole month last time, I only have 3 items on my list to buy on the 15th. Milk, cereal, and yogurt. This will be a huge savings for us.

Speaking of wearing old clothes, Anna, I'm wearing lounge dresses that I bought from Blair that are over 20+ yrs. old. I wear them for work dresses during the summer around the house. They are still like new. Haven't faded, shrunk, or stretched. I plan to get many more years out of them. That's one reason I love ordering most of my clothes from Blair. You can hardly ever wear them out. Reasonably priced, too, for the quality you get.

We decided to stay out of the heat for the weekend and instead canned 24 quarts of Salsa.

I still say the wife is trying to kill me. I just did a small taste and I no longer could feel my lips, gums, face and had some issues breathing for a few......

I am so glad I didn't eat some. It would have been the death of me.

I woke up in the wee hours and could not go back to sleep. That's unusual and I couldn't remember if I'd taken my sleeping medication so I took something else and eventually went back to sleep. I haven't been up very long and I have a slight headache. However, my spirits are good, I've finally broken the weight plateau I'd been on for the last few weeks. And to add to that I unearthed my treadmill last night, I couldn't walk on it very long but its a start. I really need to move more. And I've kept the kitchen up for a while now. Its so pleasant to wake up to a clean kitchen.

I got the bulletin done yesterday morning at church, it was too early for me so I came back home after it was done.

We have some rain in the forcast this week, but who knows it if will materialize. Its hot hot hot. From the heavy rain we had the other day a limb fell on the fence and the goats have gotten out in the timber. So DH is out cutting the limb up and repairing the fence.

Just did some closeup checking on the tree just west of the house and it is an ash, and it does have the bore so I now have two trees to pay for removal plus half of another. It will be July before he can do anything but is going to try to come down this week to look at my and my neighbor's trees. To add to my happy day I got notice that light and gas company has filed for a rate increase which will raise bills approximately 6.6%. Guess it could be much worse as I've heard on forums of people having 20% increases in natural gas and much higher for propane.

Some of the flower seeds I planted have come up, but with temps going into the 90's and no rain this week I'm not sure they will survive. Just checked the weather again and thunderstorms are now forecast for Friday. I also trimmed all the lower leaves off the tomato plants, finished pruning the hedges and the forsythia which gave me an upper body workout. I deliberately only take one tool out of the garage at a time so get steps in walking back and forth.

It was down in the 50's last night and will be again tonight. I had to dig a blanket out for my bed. It didn't get down to 50 in the house but still chilly. I could not get to sleep and realized I was cold. Once I got the blanket, I sleep good and did not wake up until 10:30 this a.m. I was up for the bathroom (of course!) but went right back to sleep each time. So, breakfast at noon and now a snack so lunch is skipped and supper as usual. x

I didn't get below 70 all night last night, I like to sleep cool and that is not cool. Right now I have three fans going in my direction and a fourth on standby.

In my effort to get more steps I saw a video about measuring steps on a treadmill. (I think I've already said this somewhere else, oh well. Any they said to put you step meter on your ankle. I have extras so I did that. The ankle monitor has more than 200 more steps than the one on my wrist and I've not been on the treadmill yet.

Good Morning, All!

It was a chilly morning here for being near to the middle of June - around here they call it "Strawberry Winter." It was 49* when I first looked at the thermometer, but was supposed to get in to the low 70's; however, the thermometer is sitting on 60 right now. The rain yesterday was a bit more than was forecast, but I can't tell how much more as when I went out this morning to check the rain gauge, it was gone. Zip ties I'd used to fasten it to the t-post in the flower bed are still there; and I checked the ground and through the lemon balm and raspberries in the area of the post I fasten it to, but no rain gauge. I'm betting on raccoons.... I stopped by Dollar General to check to see if they had any rain gauges, but that was a 'nope'. I'll look tomorrow at the Evil Empire if I go to daughter's town.

The ground should be dry enough to finish planting the gardens by Wednesday or Thursday as the temps are supposed to climb until they are into the mid to high 80's before it rains again on Saturday. While I'm waiting for the ground to dry, I'm going to continue searching for brown mulch so that I can finish mulching the front flower beds. I also need to weed the strawberry/flower bed by the side porch. Speaking of strawberries, did you know that kittens like strawberries? Little boogers are out there in the strawberry bed eating them  did good to get enough for a small shortcake plus a few to eat out of hand - no thanks to those rascals! Watching them play and be silly gave me reason to smile though; and that was worth a lot more than a few strawberries.

The neighbor and I went to the pool today, and are going to go to again tomorrow; then I think we are done for the week as she has other plans. I was hoping we'd go again on Friday as that is the day the VFW has their fish special, but I reckon that it's actually possible for me to go to the VFW without going to the pool first

Just got an estimate on removing 2½ trees which was $1,800 so better than I anticipated. It will be July before he can get to us. All shade on both the west and east side of my property will be gone. Three trees to the south are okay. I have a feeling that is going to make a big difference in my a/c bill. Also, I now work on the east side of the garden in the shade in the morning and the west side in the shade in the evening. Now it will be 100% in the sun all day. Probably good for the garden but not so much for an old lady.

2 1/2 trees for only $1800! Wow. This one huge oak tree was going to cost us $1500 2 years ago. Cary hasn't had it estimated yet, so don't have a clue what it is now. Closer to $2000 is my guess, and I don't know if that includes clean up and stump removal. Thing is, after it lost a lot of leaves, it's stopped losing them now. I don't know what to make of it. It's still lush and green. We still want it looked at my someone who knows what they're doing this Fall.

We're in for more rain tonight, with heavy thunderstorms tomorrow morning through Wednesday night. Whatever is in the gardens will have to wait til Thursday to be gathered. It'll just give the peppers more time to get larger. It rained so hard last night that our green beans took a beating. Some of them that hadn't started climbing yet got beat into the ground. They should be ok, though. The wind was so bad it blew my squash plants around, but they're ok, too. One of my large flowerpots with a huge fern in it got blown off the stand and out into the yard. I managed to save it. Poor thing, it got hammered pretty hard.

Cary had leftovers tonight for his supper, and I had a chef salad. I cooked too much last night, and there was just enough for his supper tonight.

I think easy access to the trees by allowing him to use my property to take down neighbors' large ash tree and the lot line tree helped with the price. Also, one of the two trees on the west is not a huge one and all easily accessible through the vacant lot I've already gotten permission to cross. Also, the lot line tree is not a huge tree. Neighbor's ash and the hackberry that is diseased are quite big trees. Being able to take care of two customers without moving all equipment twice is also a factor. Neighbor to the north also has two ash trees that need to come down and I'm trying to contact him to see if he wants his taken care of at the same time. Those also would likely need access to my property to setup equipment and I'd rather have all equipment on my property only the once.

in regard to that oak tree - could use some help - even the old ones benefit from some extra feeding >>> might want to research how far out the root feeding should be and how deep to deposit the fertilizer - keeping it well watered this summer should help it's health ....

It rained early this morning. We had been needing rain for weeks. We have good chances through the weekend. The rain has really helped the new garden. Peas, Bloody Butcher corn, okra, butter beans, and some volunteer watermelons have all come up. One bean I bought from Bakers Creek is my only failure. Only one bean is up. Seed from them usually does really well. Not sure what happened. I will have to see if I have any seed left to try again. It was just a bean I was going to try. I have my usual beans in a different garden. I also have a bumper crop of horse nettles. How I despise that stuff!

The first peaches are coming off. I sprayed all the trees yesterday after picking. We have later varieties too. I even had to thin some on one of the young trees. The unusual thing is we have not had any racoon problems this year. Just birds after them. We have a new neighbor through the woods a bit that has been thinning the racoon population. It has really made a difference. Maybe I might even get some apples or pears this year.

We stopped at the produce stand on our last trip to town. I got cucumbers and cabbage. I made 6 pints of canned coleslaw and regular coleslaw for supper. A for real fresh cabbage is so good. Mine in the garden are not quite ready.

I ordered some Burn Free for our medicine cabinet and a bottle for each kids house. That was about all my extra stocking for this week I think.

Take care everyone

We had rain all morning and right now its cool, but its supposed to heat up later in the day and them a potential of more rain tonight. Its all welcome. The4 few things DH planted are doing well. He bought some pitiful yellow squash plants and a couple of the survived and now have squash on them. The tomato plants are huge and have lots of tomatoes on them. I wanted some small tomato plants but could not not find any, so we'll have regular sized tomatoes. Even a couple of okra plants came up and he got lots of potato plants blooming or what ever they do. So the rain is such a benefit to what we have. Too bad neither of like any kind of peppers, just can't stand the texture or the taste. Lots of good vitamin C in them.

I went back to sleep after I got up and didn't get back up for a couple of hours.

Dh has been working on the new generator shed, but with the rain this morning he's taking a break. Nothing much else going on. Ya'll are all so busy it makes me tired.

My experiment with putting a pedometer on my ankle showed almost 1000 more steps than the one on my wrist. So I've been getting more steps that I'd thought.

We got some much needed rain late Sunday afternoon, the first we‘ve had in weeks. We could use more as it’s really dry here. I hope all that are needing rain, get it especially you @anna43. Yesterday was so nice temperature wise, I opened a lot of windows to let the fresh air in, didn’t turn the a/c on until about dark since the sun came out late afternoon and heated things up.

It has been so busy here the past few weeks we had to keep putting off our shopping trip. We finally made it this past Thursday to Sam’s and ALDI, between all the time on the road, the actual shopping, loading, unloading, putting away, I’m DONE for a few days. Yesterday was the first day I managed to get much of anything accomplished.

It has been a few months since I’ve been in Sam’s but it seems every time I go, there is less and less items. The refrigerator cases with fresh produce is just strange. One side that used to be loaded with several different items, this time had bagged peeled garlic for half of the bottom shelf and it was definitely spaced out, only two bag deep. Then an empty spot, then about 1/4 of that shelf had a few boxes of bagged brussel sprouts with a couple of bags of green beans. The top shelf was empty. Now usually that case has the above items plus asparagus, white and baby belle mushrooms, etc. When I got to the opposite side where the 5 lb bags of carrots usually reside, there were a few packs of mushrooms, next to them a few bags of baby carrots, a few bags of regular carrots, a few cauliflower heads and some bags of broccolI. I can’t think what all was missing from that side but it was fuller than the other. There was only one kind of grapes and they were even more expensive than usual. This was in Jackson. The day before my DD was in a Sam’s at Clarksville and she was mostly wanting fruit for her kids but noticed some of the same things. May not mean a thing but it seemed strange in my experience.

@Digger DH brought in a fresh head of cabbage from the garden and I agree fresh cabbage is so much better than store bought. He took a head to his aunt and came home with fresh yellow squash which was a treat since ours isn’t producing yet. We’ve gotten a few cherry tomatoes getting ripe to granddaughters complete delight.

I bought one a few weeks back (different brand) in anticipation of putting peppers up this summer and for times when what I’m cooking requires a lot of diced veggies. One day after dicing up a boat load of veggies, I remembered I had one and had completely forgotten to use it.

LOL, I've done that with other things, too. I'm waiting, until Sunday, when I'll see our DDIL, so she can order the one Summerthyme posted. She has orders going out and coming in from Amazon all the time. I'm going to let her order mine with her next order.

I knew it was going to take all day taking Mom to see her doctor. We've just now got home, and we left our house at 7:30 am. We got her all taken care of with her scan and doctor, then she wanted to go shopping. Cary just sat in the SUV and read his new book while we shopped. Then, she was about to starve from not being able to eat before her CT scan. She wanted to go eat, so we took her where she liked to go (Cracker Barrel). Took her back home, and since Sunday is Father's Day, she had bought flowers (I paid for them) for Dad's grave, so we took them to the memorial garden where he is buried. Took her back home, then came home. I am so tired, and my knee is hurting me so bad.

We got a thunder shower early this morning, and it rained on us all the way to Tupelo. Strong to severe storms later this afternoon going into tonight and all day tomorrow. The gardens are loving it! I am, too, since I'm not having to water everything.

Sherree, a knee brace is very helpful. When I got up this morning my right knees was giving me grief and I put on a knee brace and I'm hardly even noticing. DH wears one every day and said he would collopse without it.

I have one, but when I wear it, it seems to make my knee worse. I haven't found anything that will stop the pain, and this has been going on for over a year now. Nothing showed on x-rays, so it isn't a joint problem. I may have to give in and see an Orthopedists. Rheumatologist won't do anything for it, and neither will my PC doctor.

I had one made in Shreveport, custom made to my leg and created with 3 D printer.
With it I walk, withiout it I am on crutches

I finally gave in and went to town to shop today. Town is a mess with road construction and stupid detours which I didn't follow. Detour takes me south several blocks and then back again. I just take a different street two blocks north which comes out within a block of where I want to be. Stores were very busy. Walmart looked like it could be in a city in Mexico.
I ended up spending $97.93 at Aldi. Prior to today the most I've spent was $75 when I was buying for a holiday. Price of eggs was down to 92¢ but everything else seemed to be up. Bag of apples $3.99 but the ones I'd have preferred were $4.99 which is up from $3.29. Orange juice frozen concentrate jumped from $1.49 to $1.95.

At Dollar Tree they had the packet of muffin mix for $1.25 and its $1.08 at Walmart. That's true for a lot of their food items. Canned veggies are $1.25 but 65 to 85 cents at Aldi depending on what you're getting. I picked up 4 more quarts of shelf stable milk with best by date of May, 2024.

Just looked at my Dollar Tree receipt and see that I was charged for two toothpastes, and I only bought one.

Most shelves seemed to be fully stocked although in the supplements at Walmart were sketchy. I did find everything on my list eventually.

My late dh was given a knee brace that he took off immediately because he could not get into the car with it on. He never used it, and I donated it after he passed. It was very bulky and looked uncomfortable and kept his leg straight which did not help his mobility at all. I could totally understand why he refused to use it.

Thanks for link to knee brace Nomifyle. I have knee problems but knee not bone on bone. I have come to conclusion it is tendons and ligaments.

Summer is here! 105 next week in high desert of NM. But no humidity.

I am trying to cook and freeze some things for later. Quick breads and muffins right now. I hid my cans of pumpkin from myself when putting things in pantry after our last Costco run.

Similar around here. A single pecan tree 40ft high with stump grinding cost me $2k

I do have to say once he was done, it was like he was never there nor was the tree
