I have a recipe from my mil for what she called angel biscuits. They are made with yeast and dough will keep in the fridge for several days. Take part of dough each day and roll out. Used to make them alot when kids were growing up. I'm not really a bread eater. Prefer cornbread but even a pan of cornbread is a lot for us.
Connie you take me back a bunch of years to a sweet sweet memory! While in nursing school, I took care of a woman whose father fought in the Civil War. Needless to say she was old then! Occasionally I would take her to visit her sisters who lived together. They taught me to make angel biscuits. I haven't thought about them in a long time! Great recipe!

I got a straighttalk phone, on sale $35 when we were in Cleveland. I have to have a good reliable phone since all the appts and so on come to my phone for me to manage. I'll be looking at other plans though as i have to keep same number.
We like consumer cellular..it works everywhere unless no towers... we are pretty rural...
One thing I really like about this company is that I can pay with a credit card and not let them in my bank account...they don't charge me extra to do that like some companies..

Tried some of the MRE sides that I had put away from my purge a couple of weeks ago. The pineapple was too far gone to eat, but the applesauce was pretty good. Really sweet though. Trying one of the beverage mixes now. Tastes okay, but it is not gatorade. Think I will save those for trading/barter. Still several more sides to try. Decided to move them to the kitchen so I wouldn't forget about them.

I was lucky to end up all the recipes on both sides of my family..I am the baby of my generation and the last one still living..my dad's sister collected recipes..and had recipes going back to my great great great grandmother.(.she was married in 1810).when my aunt passed sadly no one wanted recipe collection but me and I was Mom 's only child...so I have about three generations..of her families...
I was able to buy a four drawer box of recycled library files ....I checked my box and found the recipe for angel biscuits and also a recipe for heavenly biscuits..they both use yeast...but are a bit different...I do remember my aunt making the heavenly biscuits..they were wonderful..
Yes talking about biscuits has really brought back the memories my Aunt (like a second Mom to me) and Mom passed away 2 weeks part 34 years ago this year.. i am very lucky to have all their recipes... especially since they both lived through the depression

@hd5574 - ya know, if you're really bored, we do have a recipes section should you get an urge to post them!!

I am working my way thru the gelatin cookbook put out by Farm Journal. Jello is good for me - I need extra protein and it's easy to eat. Yes, I know - lots of sugar. But for right now, it's better than some other areas of my diet (I am improving it since I have gained back some weight). The one I made today is not great - a waldorf type salad with lemon jello - but I'll eat it because I hate waste.

The first one I made was orange with cottage cheese (that I made from powdered milk as an experiment. It wasn't fabulous ( I don't love cottage cheese to begin with) but it worked ok), sherbet (called for orange - I used cherry limeade cause that's what I had), mandarian oranges (I used fresh) and whipped cream (which I left out). I follow recipes to the letter!!! LOL! It was pretty good, so I kept that one.

this second one - meh. The next one I plan to make is lime with pears and cream cheese. I'll probably do that sunday.

We add protein powder to our coffee and tea....we have been doing it for around 15 years ...it really ups our protein intake...I was very ill back in the fall of 2021....not covid....but some type of nastybbacteria infection....it took 2 different antibiotics too kill it..was so sick I was not eating and dehydrating...it had gotten in my lungs... the long and short of this I lost all my muscle...I could not push up from the floor with my legs..DH had to help me to get up and down the stairs...i was a mess...
As soon as I was finally over it....I began to double up the protein powder..and it helped me to quickly regain my muscles and tone...
The company is Great Lakes Wellness..the green can/bag .. collagen peptides..we get the 8lb bag...the cheapest way yo get it..around 300 servings in a bag
It is sold on Amazon..and it is cheaper to get it on their website..we signed up on the website and get points every time we purchase...they also have sales from time to time and email you codes... the website ships free..and very quickly ...no real taste and desolves quickly...it will make tea cloudy...lol
Each serving is 11grams of protein...no sugar... your body can absorb up to 3 servings per day .. so 33 grams....called and spoke with customer service when DH had to have an operation..we started him on 3 a day before the operation and he had a rapid recovery...hip replacement and he was driving in 2 weeks..and he did it 3 times a day for a couple of months after the operation...
When he got home...one night in the hospital...he was able to climb 13 stairs to go to bed ...he never looked back.
Maybe it would help you with extra protein

Gelatin very good for you. Read once about elderly woman whose Dr had advised her years ago to eat some every day and she had followed that advice.
Maybe that's why hospitals used to serve it?
The Medicinal Uses of Gelatin

.... "So if you have ever wondered why hospital patients are served so much Jell-O (I always thought it was because it was cheap), this is it—gelatin is almost pure protein in a liquid, easily digested form that even the pickiest of patients will usually eat. Many hospital patients are recovering from something—surgery, fractures, etc.—where tissue needs to be rebuilt. Sometimes they also need a liquid diet or easily digested food. And the body’s building blocks are protein. They build and maintain the infrastructure of connective tissues throughout the body. Hence the Jell-O." ....

If we are required to have a smart phone, I am not paying for it. "they" can pound sand.

Great Lakes is what I use. I put a heaping spoonful in my coffee once a day. Not quite what is recommended but its better than nothing.

Over cast and warmish outside, rain in the forecast.

I ordered myself a new bathrobe. I'd been looking for something warmish but not the fleece, I just don't like the feel of fleece. The robe comes in several colors but I chose one with flowers in a multi print. My last two robes have been robes that were my mothers. One is terrycloth and I loved it but ruined one of the sleeves. The other I'm not sure what the fabric but its warm and cozy. Last year I ordered a bathrobe for DH, I don't think he'd ever had one, its the fleece fabric with a hood, he loves it, last year he got new slippers and a robe. The slippers are a good brand and will last him a good while. So he's fixed for a while.

The new baby goat is precious, she's our first baby in two years. Last year there were only still births.

It's supposed to reach 80 degrees, today. It's 71 right now. Sunny skies, but we have rain and storms coming in around 6 pm and overnight. Rain tomorrow as well. We need a good ground soaking rain after all that fertilizer I put out the other day.

We made it back from small town a bit ago. Because of my eyesight being bad, I've never driven the SUV. It's much improved now, so I decided today would be a good day to drive. I made it fine. It's good to know that I can drive again. It's been almost a year, since I've been able to drive. I still can't see well enough to drive at night, though. It would have to be an extreme emergency for me to do so.

Cary is working on the wood pile, and I'm doing laundry this afternoon. We'll be having left-over chicken alfredo and chicken enchiladas for supper, tonight. It was way more than we could eat last night. It was the first time we had tried the prepared meals from Sam's, and they were really good. I wonder how they would do to bring them home, wrap the dish up good in aluminum foil, and put in the freezer for quick meals later on?

I love chicken enchiladas, but rarely eat them. Not sure what we will eat today, probably something breakfast food for first meal.

some years back DH built some shelves on the wall behind his computer desk. They were originally for tapes and DVDs. He sold them on ebay (gag) but finally quit. Then I put canned food on it but decided I didn't want my food to be so visable. So I put cookbooks and gardening books on those shelves. DH didn't build the shelves to hold a lot of weight so they have sagged a lot. I unloaded the books and now he has the shelves rebuilt. I need to go through the books to see what I want to pass on.

Its 80 degrees in my office and supposed to get that high outside, the sun is shinning bright now.

Overcast and rainy: 48 degrees. No complaints! We need the rain!

Started on the dryer vent project this morning but ran into several unexpected problems. Just like at the last house, someone with anger issues cut the wrong-sized hole into the house and then filled the gaps in with Qwikcrete (or something similar) and then used a ton of caulk to hold everything in place. It took a lot of the morning to get that cleaned out. Pro tip: if you must use filler, use expanding foam, not cement. The foam provides an excellent seal and can be removed with a knife, if necessary. (The hole the tube goes into had close to a 5" diameter. Most vents are either 3" or 4")

1710441270641.jpeg

Anyway, the outside part with the new vent cover is installed. I've got a better grade of flexible dryer vent hose there for the moment. I need some additional parts for the aluminum duct to fit. I totally get why people don't put in the solid ducts -- a true pain to install -- but they are less of a fire hazard.

Photos from the internet! But similar to what I did. None of this was hard to do or required special tools. Yet, the handymen charge $200 (or more) for this type of work around here. Ugh!

Old and new parts: the new duct work has the opening on the other side, more of an S shape than the photo

We are having pizza , cole slaw and pickled beets for lunch. The slaw and beets are left over from when we had butter beans the other night.

I ate too many beans, they were so good, that I had stomach problems for two days. I need to incorporate beans in my regular food but in half cup amounts for my gut to get use to them.

The presents for the children came, to toy tool kit is so cute as are the jewelry boxes for the girls. And i think the 10 year old boy will love his tool kit.

Yes, if I haven't had beans for awhile (rare!) I start off with about less than 1/4 cup and build up slowly. Soaking the beans overnight really does help.

Beans, apples, and oatmeal help me to stay regular. When I'm not getting enough, my gut gets very unhappy with me. This is why I dislike eating plans that discourage these foods.

Today we finished the toilet that took us by surprise. Replaced rubber seal and wax ring only to have one of bolts strip out. Of course the toilet was in a very hard to get to place. Thought we were done then realized water connection at back had split with an almost invisible tiny crack. Once I get some vinegar in the bowl we will be done with that bathroom.

Grand came and helped us with moving out all the tools we shouldn't need now. Had some light fixtures we used to replace the 3 that the renters ruined. I think, fingers crossed, we are down to just touching up paint and deep cleaning.

Had been soaking tools renter left in yard in a 5 gal bucket of vinegar. Super rusty tools now look new. Now DH just has to sort and find a place for a ton of wrenches and sockets.

Going to town in morning to pay bills. Will make a run to KC next week and fill some holes in canned goods and baking stuff. Gonna be back home at least a week before eclipse. Gonna stay put while the nonsense is happening.

Storming tonight. Power blipped earlier. When my kids were small and it would start storming I would talk about how great we were gonna sleep because it would be storming. To this day they love sleeping on a stormy night.

I like hearing the rain on the roof, but spring storms can be problematic late at night. If the tornado sirens go off, I have to grab my go bag and the cat treats and make my way to the basement. I shake the bag if my cat is hiding. It's rare that she doesn't follow me downstairs after that. (Yes, we do drills periodically.)

In the spring, I usually open up the cot, leave blankets on it, and just leave it that way, under the stairs. That's one less thing I have to fiddle with at 2 am.

If it's bad at bedtime, sometimes we go sleep in the basement.

Out here, tornadoes can come rain-wrapped and be extremely hard to see. That's why I take all local tornado warnings seriously. And even if we don't get a warning, if the wind is blowing hard enough, I go to the basement. Better safe than sorry!

We have had a busy week. Monday we did my contract job. At the next to the last areas I clean up, someone had dumped a bed off in a ravine. I got it wrestled up to where hubby could reach it and get it on the road. Then I helped him put it in the truck. It would have been so much easier if they would have just dumped it at the parking area. I was just thankful it hadn't rained on it. Rain would have made it much heavier. We don't get stuff like that often anymore. The cleaner things are, the cleaner they stay.

Tuesday we got the grandkids. Our daughter had a dr appointment for a checkup. We had a good day with the kids. The time change has us all messed up though.

Wednesday we went to Conway for hubbys appointment with his specialist. The dr is not happy about the way the country is going. The last 2 times he has talked about the things in our food and the state of the country. He just shakes him head over the LGBTQ stuff. He says it just makes him cry for the children. He is from Egypt but has been here a long time. He tells us to pray for the country.

Thursday we took the trash in to get rid of it before the rain moved in. The county yard was closed by the time we were done Monday. I called Atwoods to see what poultry had arrived. They got straight run bronze turkeys. I had wanted bourbon reds but I bought 8 bronze. They can also breed naturally. I was afraid I would not find the others and I really wanted another food source. Also the injection in the commercial turkeys seems to increase every year. I just need clean meat. I do much better if I don't eat processed food. My turkeys are in the dinning room in a crate for now. Once they got their belly full and good and warm, they have quited down. There for hours they were very noisy, but they had just arrived and had not settled in at the store yet. I will eventually move them to a big water tank on the porch. I have to build them a pen. We are still trying to decide on the place.

I sent off an order from Lehman's for oil lamp parts. New wicks, a couple of new burners, and some mantels for our Aladdin lamps. I also bought a chimney cleaning brush for the lamp chimneys. All these items were in stock. I am hoping the well bucket I ordered will be in before June. They get more every 6-8 weeks, but they sell fast. I don't know how many are ahead of my order.

We had a lot of rain last night and a little hail. I am waiting on daylight to see how we faired. Parts of Arkansas had a tornado, but it was south of us.

We've been awake since 3 am with 3 severe thunderstorm warnings and one tornado warning for our county. All back to back with each other about every 30 mins. Tornado went east of us. Some of my lawn furniture got blown around the yard, but no damage. Others in the area weren't so lucky. Trees down on houses all over. No injuries have been reported. It's supposed to rain all day, today, but no more storms. Temps are turning much cooler.

Mississippi is well known for nighttime tornadoes, and we don't take the watches or warnings lightly. If bad weather is approaching us, we don't go to bed, until it passes. If warnings are given after we go to bed, we get up, until it passes. People have been killed for trying to sleep through tornadic activity over night. It happens here too often.

I'll be doing laundry and some light cleaning, today. Nothing getting done outside, so Cary has new books to read and a race on tv he wants to watch.

I'm making homemade bbq pulled pork from a pork roast for sandwiches on buns tonight along with cole slaw and oven roasted potato chunks. Homemade peach cobbler and ice cream for dessert. It's a good day to cook.

Lucky Cary with new books to read. so many books and nothing to read. Although I'm thinking about reading one of the history books that Bill O'Reily wrote. I've read good reviews on them. And I'm waiting on the Preston & Childs next book to come out in August.

Raining this morning, some lightening too, but I think that part has passed, at least I hope so.

I watched a video the other day about food that does not have to be cooked. On thing he mentioned was Beanie Weenies. They certainly are not cheap any more, but I may add a half dozen cans to the pantry. And perhaps a few of the 8 0z cans of pork and beans. I have plenty of the larger cans.

I actually got up before 9 this morning, much better than two hours later.

Digger... have you ever had chickens on the place? If so, the earthworms probably carry blackhead disease. This is generally mild in chickens (who often don't show symptoms at all), but is deadly to turkeys.

Most books basically say it's "incurable". Fortunately, they are wrong!

Keep some acidified copper sulfate on hand. IIRC (and I may not... it's been years), it was 1 tsp per gallon of water.

You can either use it as a preventative assoon as you move them from confinement onto bare ground or grass, or treat with it at the slightest sign of less energy and darkening of their heads.

I've seen it cure even serious cases in Narragansetts and Broad Breasted White birds.

Blackhead is the main reason turkey growers used to raise them in raised cages, so they couldn't eat worms.

I have free range chickens. I plan to keep the turkeys confined till they are big. We have wild turkeys around too. I so much appreciate any advice. I was young when dad raised turkeys. I wish I would have paid more attention. It was at least 45 years ago. Dad did have chickens also, but they were not housed together. The turkeys will be about 1/2 an acre from the chicken housing. The chickens roam around daily. We will see how it goes. It maybe a total failure, but time will prove it one way or the other.

56 degrees and mostly sunny!

Busy day here -- hauled more mulch and worked on the the lawn mower. The back wheels that I ordered arrived this morning, but not the front wheels (now on back order) or the pop-up sink drain, but at least the mower is further along.

I'm eating a late lunch of reheated frozen stew and the last two slices of frozen garlic toast (from my birthday).

I can't believe it's Friday already. This week has flown. I'm glad I was able to finish some projects, but once again, I really could use another week at home. It's hard to do projects and paying work, too. I have more energy than I did, but it's still not the greatest.

We kept our poultry all together in one pen and house. We had no problems. Maybe we were just lucky. We even had a wild goose fly in and stay one winter. She left in the spring.
As I mentioned above, earthworms are the intermediate host for blackhead. But once in a flock, it can also spread bird to bird.

If you happen to be on a place with no history of poultry raising, and only bought your chickens from a hatchery/commercial source, you may get lucky and not see it. But the eggs stay live I the soil for 4 years, at least.

The monthly bills are paid, and my taxes are finished.
Taxes were other priority on my task list. I put those off until I was totally caught up on sleep.
So, that's a good end to the work week.

I wish the mower and sink (pop-up plug) were finished, but I'm still waiting for parts. It looks like they might be delivered next week, fingers crossed.

There's still odds and ends to do, but the most of the projects I can do in March that require patience and time are finished. The next big one is sanding and painting (?) the deck. I'd like to stain it, but right now the budget is calling for paint. That's a May project, unless we get banner weather in April, which could happen.

I had a major fail in the pantry last night. I shredded the pork roast and went to the pantry to grab a bottle of bbq sauce. I opened it, and it was spoiled. I opened another bottle. It was spoiled, too. The smell was ok, but the taste was off. All 6 bottles had the same expire date which was 2 1/2 years ago, so they were all spoiled. Cary had to make a trip down to the country store for a new bottle. I won't be replacing those. We don't use enough bbq sauce to warrant having several bottles stored up. I'll add more jars of bread and butter pickles to the empty spot on the shelf. We go through a jar of those quite often. I've needed to stock up on more of those, anyway. I hate it when I have a pantry fail!

Today is another indoor day. It's soggy outside from the storms, and it's turned cold again. Sunday and Monday nights are going below freezing. I found out on our local news, yesterday, that we had 3 radar indicated tornadoes in our county alone the other night. I think one came pretty close to us by the way the wind was blowing. I thought the roof of our house was going to fly off! Stuff was banging up against the sides of the house, too. At night, it makes it double scary when these things come through.

@SouthernBreeze I read too fast and thought you said you had a FALL! Glad it was only BBQ sauce!
You weren't the only one. And I am also glad I read it wrong.

Son and I had a good day yesterday but I was wiped. It was an unplanned day off and apparently I really needed one. So I was pretty much shut down for the day. And plotting today. I don't think I'll make it to get the 5 gallon buckets but I think I'll get a lot done this weekend.

Husband told me that I couldn't use the new brush cutter because I would cut my leg off. What he doesn't know won't hurt me, and I've used it the past 2 days. He wasn't lying, that thing is mean. It takes it over 90 seconds to spin down, so anything that gets hung in it is going to get torn up. I can only run it for 15 minutes at a time because it is so darn heavy. But that little bit of time cut more brush than I managed to do in 3 hours by hand.
Sherree, I read it that you fell as well. Glad that you are ok. Don't beat yourself up over losing a little bit of sauce. My big freezer died a couple weeks ago and I was able to save all the meat, but I had to throw out about $30 of fruit, veggies, and ice cream because there was just nowhere to put it. Very thankful I managed to save the meat, we couldn't have afforded to lose it.

Overcast but it looks like the sun may come out. DH was cold when he got up so he lit a fire in the wood stove, fortunately for me it didn't get so hot.

In going through the books I had on the shelves behind DH's computer desk I've found some good ones for Morgan. Many are on prepping, homesteading, gardening, plant identification and older cook books. I'm debating on whether or not to give her my canning books. I don't want to overwhelm her with books though. But the books on alternate ways of cooking she will probably need more than I will.

I did find something to read, a Reacher book that I must not have read. I'm about a 4th of the way through it and it does not seem familiar. Although I do reread books that I really liked. This particular book is on kindle.

No rain today but predicted for tonight and tomorrow.
