I build systems and procedures in my preps. This allows me to see how everything relates and how to build redundancy. This week, I'll be updating our grid-down procedures with lessons learned after last week's, 4-day, power outage.
  • We purchased a new generator last summer - natural gas replaced gasoline, 7500w replaced 3400w. Last week after major storms, I found that several of my procedures could be updated. The extra power allows me to use conveniences like the microwave, oven and clothes dryer. (yippee)
  • It's been several years since I made those procedures and we've replaced several of our small appliances, a chest freezer and a sump pump. That means I need to do the whole Kill-A-Watt survey again to update my list of power uses.
  • Then I print everything, laminate the checklist and file my binder in my special place. On preps we don't use very often, I find it nice to have written notes to remind me of the smaller tasks.
  • This is not a auto-start (Generac) generator. Attaching the gas hose to the supply line is a 20' hike up a hill, which is very slippery when it's raining. I need to figure out how to build in some safety when trekking up the hill and a motion light to make it easier to hook up at night.
Prepping is my thing and not so much shared by hubby. He's happy to pay for what I want (and we can afford it) and to help (when I ask sweetly), but otherwise, it's all me. These types of projects I can do but they are not my strong-skills. I don't look forward to this type of prep-project.

I just finished cooking out 2 1/2 pounds of bacon in the oven. I'm making bacon and pancakes for supper tonight, so I cooked out the whole pack. What's left from supper will go back in the freezer to use later for sandwiches and bacon bits. Sometimes, I put the bacon pieces in with veggies to season them and for use in my homemade potato salad. Kitchen got cleaned up afterwards, too. I thought of making some homemade peanut butter cookies, but I didn't. I'll think about doing that later, today. I feel right at home in the kitchen, love to cook, and it relaxes me.

No home fellowship, today. So, we'll do more reading (Cary has a new book), watching tv, and enjoying each other's company again, today. No stress. I'll be able to get my walk in this afternoon.

Tomorrow is our big day. Shopping! We have several different places to go, and it's supposed to be 78 and sunny. A perfect day to be out and about, doing a lot of walking. I'm looking forward to it. We have no plans for the rest of the month, until the 27th which is a check-up for Cary with his PCP. It's his yearly wellness check. He'll also get a recommendation on what needs to be done with the lipoma in his leg. Hopefully, no surgery, but we'll see.

Prayers for blessings and protection for everyone here for the coming week. :rs:

Years ago when I had a lipoma on my back it never hurt, but it itched underneath it and just about drove me crazy. Once I had it take off the incision still itches like crazy. The surgery to remove it from my back was very minimum and I got one of the radiology docs that I worked with to remove the stiches. LOL, he told me it would leave a scar and I shouldn't wear a low back evening gown, He was definitely old school. I told him it would not be a problem. My even gown days were long past.

Still working on getting things put away and listed on EBay. I have so much powdered milk I don't think we'll ever use it, so I decided to try to make some cottage cheese with it- I need some for a jello salad. I found a reprinted copy of a Farm Journal cookbook for gelatin, so I want to work my way thru it. I need the extra protein from gelatin, and it slides down on my bad days when I'm having a hard time eating (thankfully those are getting fewer and fewer).

Not much planned for this week - work and plugging away with trying to organize and purge and clean. That in and of itself is a multi-year project! @summerthyme I can't even imagine trying to move your farm like you did!!

The lipoma is on the back side of Cary's right thigh. It hurts him when he sits too long or in a certain way. It's so large it covers the whole backside of his thigh. His PCP has told him that he needs a surgeon to have a look at it, but he doesn't think surgery will be necessary, unless it starts giving Cary more problems than he wants to deal with. Cary hasn't decided if he wants surgery or not, yet. Once he sees his PCP on the 27th, we'll see what he recommends this time. Cary has had the lipoma for years, and it hasn't grown any larger. It just went through a growing spell at the beginning, but hasn't grown, since. PCP said that it's the largest he's ever seen.

I assume you have a flex gas hose of some kind to span that 20ft - for safety's sake you really need to cut that down to a few feet - none if you can manage >>>> you should keep an eye open on the recycle & used classifieds for construction leftover PEX type gas line - direct bury most of the way down that hill ....

OMG, mine was about the size of a silver dollar. I can only imagine what it must feel like on the back of Cary's thigh, touching something. God Bless.

I have had a relaxing weekend after the past busy week.
*The carry on luggage piece arrived from Amazon, and I think I am going to really like it.
*I ordered a 40 pound bag of dog food and some dog treats from Chewy For our sweet golden. I try to stay ahead on her food by a few months.
*I finished a book and am halfway through another.
*I went to a thrift store yesterday and picked up a few things (fabric tablecloth, cloth napkins, Easter decorations (3), and a bird feeder) - all under $10
*laundry & dishes are done

Slow and steady ….

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
Hmmmm.....
Living here has some advantages I had not realized!!!
My niece'husband tilled up a fairly large area for us to plant the garden in!! COOL!!!
We are sharing dinner tonight and will decide what to plant where!!
At least they are willing to grow a garden! It's already HOT down here, at least it's HOT to ME!!! Going up to mid to high 70's most days!!! At the beginning of March!! The heat may KILL me down here!! I always PREFER when Spring and summer come on SLOW....it gives my body time to adjust.

Interesting times we are living in!! Not looking like this year will be good for the ole USA!!! Or, really the WHOLE !!
They are really trying to start WWII. IDIOTS!!!

It doesn't look or feel bad at all. It just looks like the back of his thigh is swollen. It doesn't look like a lump at all. PCP's concern is that the pain caused when Cary sits down a certain way is, because the lipoma might be pressing against a nerve. The pain stops, once he changes positions.

We are continuing to work on the gardens. New blackberries are planted and doing well so far.
Sorting out winter clothes.
The wind has finally settled but will be back tomorrow along with a chance of rain.
I've started doing more dinner prep this weekend. Changing up our eating habits. Dh's oxalate numbers are high so we're changing things up, plus lowering his salt. His kidney function is very good but what he takes to keep his ITP in check comes with a couple of issues.
Have a good week everyone!

That's what I was thinking that sitting it would be pressing on how he was sitting. Mine was barely noticable but it itched under it and the scar still itches sometimes.

Spent all day rewiring the water setup where renters left us a mess. Had to buy new control box and some expensive connections. We had previously wired everything in a way that meant most maintenance was done in water heater closet. Renters ripped out wires and moved everything under the house. I did as much of it as I could. DH's knees and neck are shot from a lifetime in construction. Cannot wait to sell this piece of property.

Got a lot more scrap moved. As someone else noted, I don't know how ST survived selling the farm and moving. So many years and so much stuff! I totally reworked my little kitchen yesterday. Made room for air fryer. We use it a lot. Cleaned up the area around grandma's vintage end table. It had become hidden by computer cables, books, and all kinds of stuff. Love seeing more clean space.

The best thing that has come out of all this property stuff is the organization. Finally talked DH into getting a good toolbox. A big one. His tools were scattered from the inlaws to the farm to the studio apartment. Now they are mostly in one place. Our preps are far more organized (probably just in time) and we are settling what is broken and will be fixed versus what is broken and will be disposed of.

My new laundry rug and chair covers from Temu are at the Post office. Chair covers will allow me to get rid of the long throws and start using the robot vacuum cleaner. They will also put a fresh face on my old chairs. I will pick them up at 7 in am (love our rural postmaster!) and make a quick trip to town before working with clients in a morning meeting. While organizing client stuff I updated password lists for kids in case of emergency. We also labeled all the keys DH had been tossing in a candy dish. 40 years of keys can be a nightmare.

Someone gave me a new instapot that supposedly can be used for canning. I like the idea of having 3 or 4 jars going while I so other things. Will give it a try on one of our rainy days this week.

Have a good week.

Please let us know how the Instapot works for canning! I can no longer lift a full rack due to back problems. That's why I switched over to drying and freezing, but I'd like to continuing canning very small batches of tomatoes.

Pouring rain at my place. My walk is on hold until later in the day. Guess it's going to be an early breakfast: two soft-boiled eggs and toast.

It's already a beautiful morning here in NE MS. 60 degrees outside right now, reaching up to 78-80, today. My kind of weather. Not too hot and not too cold.

We'll be going shopping, later. Cary has a few phone calls to make this morning. There was a problem with one of our bills getting paid, since we closed out the old account. It was a direct withdrawal. He has to get that straightened out. No big deal, I'm sure. Our bank and case manager have been bending over backwards helping us to get back on track with everything. We are so grateful and thankful for her help.

Lots of running around to do, today. I won't need an extra walk.

We need to go into one small town to go to City Hall to see why they sent us a letter about homesteading. Another stop, while there, at the dry cleaners to pick up my king sized quilt I had put in to get cleaned. Then, on to the meat market in another small town. Then, we'll go to the small town where we shop. First, to the bank, then the wine shop, and on to Walmart for groceries. It will be a full day, but everything will be done for another month. We're just going to take our time and enjoy the day out. No rushing or stressing over anything.

I'm planning BLT's for our supper with some of that bacon I cooked, yesterday. I'll get the lettuce and tomatoes from the grocery store.

Hey, everyone. I'm trying to keep up with everything but the body is not always cooperating. I have been getting my blood sugar lowered but that's still a work in progress. And when it goes whack a doodle my brain and body shut down. Apparently my body's new way of dealing with it, for now, is to make me go take a nap and then purge it all when I wake up. And no, the blood sugar isn't super high high, but the body has decided that it's not going to let it go high high. Pretty sure my A1C is going to be way whacked.

I need to start spring garden work but the body is definitely not cooperating on that. And friend wrenched his back so he's down for at least another week. Probably at least two weeks with the way his back is acting. So, for right now, I just pause and smile every time I see the monster garlic.

Work has been non-stop insanity. I ended up putting in extra hours this past weekend on a side project. Fortunately for my sanity, that went much easier than expected and is likely to be able to be wrapped up by the end of the week. My memory is like a sieve at the moment. So I have been using my task list. Everything, I don't care how "small" it is goes on the task list. Just to make sure. I had been dreading the side project because I thought there was more to do. And it turns out that apparently I forgot just how much I had completed the weekend before the surgery. So there's a thank you to my older self for that, and the knowledge that the surgery recovery has a part in the memory issues.

As far as surgery recovery, besides the pure tiredness that seems continuous, and the scattered brain, everything else seems to be doing better. Since the blood thinner caused such a massive bruise that didn't want to heal, I doubled up the vitamin C and Lysine. The bruise is now slowly healing. And all of the exterior wounds are now on the surface level and responding well the ST's wound heal. I am caught in that spot of wanting to get things done, yet very distinctly not really having the physical energy to do them. And by all that is sacred, I am craving walking but my balance is still way out of whack.

I'm still using paper plates and dishes. That has actually helped a lot by reducing the things I need to do and keep track of. And, despite naps over the weekend, I got a lot of the laundry caught up on. I'm kind of frustrated that I'm still using "cheat/punt" meals. They aren't the healthiest meals for us to be eating, although still healthier than what a lot of people eat. But seriously, I am going to be really happy when I get a full, long cook, meal again.

In moments of chaos, I remembered to order son safe Easter candy but forgot to order his birthday gifts. So last night I ordered birthday gifts. And I ordered new glasses for me, with the Blockz blue light filters, including a set of progressive lens because it's becoming purely annoying that my regular glasses are an issue for anything up close. And vice versa. The scrip hasn't changed. I think the issue is my tolerance for blurry vision has changed.

Anyways, I'm keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers, even when my brain is too scrambled to communicate effectively.

I have doc appt today. Just check up and need refills.
Scot still have the tachycardia. It comes and goes.
Kids and grands were here yesterday to help with things and I made a huge dinner.
Last week on way to get the boys for library, I stopped at the free store. Small village in middle of nowhere.
It's a buck to shop but then everything is free. Good place to drop off donations too.
There were 3 Hispanic women and one man. All speaking Spanish. They had 4 contractors bags. You don't get those at free store, it's just old dollar store bags.
Anyway, they had the bags full to overflowing. Clothes. They literally cleaned the place out.
They were there with an older gray haired woman with a mid size car. She brought them. She was planning to take them to the food pantry down the street afterwards.
I was polite. No direct threat to me. The women didn't address anyone. The man looked gun shy. I just smiled and left.
They must have been brought there by the woman from the city, hour away. Couldn't barely fit the bags in the hatchback.
Just an observation .

We finally made it back home. I'm tired! I've also got everything brought in, unpacked, and put away. $460 and some change for a month's worth of groceries for two people isn't too bad especially when you depend on the grocery store for everything. I bought nothing for storage. Thing is, I don't go back every few days to a week to pick up more stuff, sale or no sale. What I bought today will make do, until next month. Not having to go back mid-month is saving us a lot for our stash, by cutting our monthly grocery budget almost in half.

Cary got everything taken care of at City Hall. It was no big deal. My quilt is all cleaned and ready to put in storage until next winter. Wine cabinet is full for the month, and everything taken care of at the bank. It's a good feeling having everything done, and we're so very thankful for it all.

Cary decided he needed a nap, and I'm going to sit here and catch up on the forum for a while and rest.

Mild temps but rain off and on. It was really heavy for about 30 minutes or so.

I started making home made egg mcmuffins and bought the Dave's Killer english muffins. I use to buy the Thomas muffins. There was about 1.50 difference in price so I splurged and got the Dave's. I liked them although DH couldn't tell the difference. And they were smaller. I decided to try the Great Value muffins. They were 1.50 and Dave's are 5.00. The GV muffins are the size we are use to. DH like the GV ones. So he had his sandwich on the GV muffin and I had mine on Dave's Killer thin sliced bread. The Thomas muffins were smaller like the Dave's and had more than doubled in price since I'd bought them about 3 years ago. so I'm going with the GV muffins and will put some in the freezer for future use.

I remembered that pineapple juice is helpful for cough this morning and not 10 days ago. It really does help.

I've been watching reruns of all the NCIS shows, although I never have watched the one Hawaii. Last night they had the episode when Tony quits NCIS (I didn't care for his new show BULL). I also don't care for the new cast, but I guess Mark Harmon was right the he just got too old. I've yet to catch the episode when Ziva leaves. I liked the New Orleans one until they started all the BLM crap in the last season. And I also liked the Los Angeles one, I think the pandemic caused its demise.

Cary and I love making egg McMuffins at home, too. I buy the Thomas brand of muffins. We like them best, but I haven't tried all the different brands. It's been quite a while, since I've made them. I might have to put that on our menu for next month. I didn't get any English muffins, today. I bought two loaves of seeded Jewish rye, though. We like ham and Swiss on that.

Our favorite NCIS is the original series. We watched NCIS New Orleans, until it got too woke. I don't like the one in Hawaii or Los Angeles. We're binge watching the original NCIS every night, but we're still in the seasons with Tony and Ziva. I hate that most of the original cast has left.

I read a few days ago on MSM that Tony, Ziva, and their daughter are coming together to make a new spin-off series of NCIS Europe.

Well, I have been semi-busy. Was on a cruise last week and had a stop in Mexico. Hit the pharmacy there for a couple of things.

Today I stopped by Ace Hardware and used my $5 birthday gift card and bought a package of the half gallon canning jars. I have 2 other coupons to use this month, and will get at least 1 more box. I ran them through the dishwasher and filled them with things that had been in plastic bags, mainly pasta and beans.

Made a quick trip to Publix and got toilet paper, deodorant (bogo), cornmeal and mozzarella pearls (bogo). Staying on top of things.

Also had a doctors appt and picked up some medication refills. And made an order on Amazon for some Gatorade powder and some Auguson Farms stuff.

Went to Kohl's after work. It's usually not a place I normally shop, but one of the gals said they had the cotton blend drawstring mid-length shorts on sale in both gray and navy, which are hard colors to find. It's mostly black and beige around here. I picked up two navy pairs and one gray pair. I did think about sewing them and then decided I've got other projects that are more pressing.

I think I'm just about set on clothing. I'm still looking for a modest navy or charcoal summer dress for funerals, but I may stick with my navy skirt and a dressy blue blouse and jacket or drag out the sewing machine later this summer when it's time to hang out in the basement.

As far as selling clothing, the second-hands shops are extremely picky. I don't even try. My last load of clothing was pretty bad, anyway. It went to recycling. It was mostly cheap Walmart tee shirts and shorts. I'm really lucky if I get two summers out of them. They just fall apart easily and mending them is a fool's errand. That's why I got the shorts at Kohl's: they are a couple of steps above Walmart, but I won't push that too far.

I do have some of my home-sewn shorts in storage. I'm going to leave those there for now. They are a tad heavy, but they wear well. I may need those when the present batch gives out.

Doc report from labs in October. A1c is 9. B12 was low so I got a shot for that.
All else good. Mamm scheduled for May.
I have to get sugar under control or back on insulin. So I'm back on keto now.
Doc ordered me a new glucometer.
My problem is so much to do and I end up eating junk or whatever available.

Got some seed soil for the grands as they want to plant a few things at their new place.

Don't need much as it's just us. Went to dollar tree and Walmart, TSC. $200 or less for most of month.

I am not giving up my one day a week volunteering at library. It's my only sanity.

This is such strange weather for early March in Michigan. Daffodils are coming up. Swiss chard overwintered and even spinach volunteers in garden.
Peach and pear budding. Neighbor told me hang Christmas lights in those trees to use if we get frost, to protect the fruit.
I'll have to drag extension cords out there. But I'm willing to try.

My sis spoils us. She sent us a little one cup coffee maker. I have the half caff coffee out and it's not bad.

Oh yes! My chickens are laying!
I only have the 4 hens left and my sweet rooster. They are over 3 years old.
I am not getting anymore. No more animals. I have to cut down the work load any way I can. 3-4 eggs a day is plenty.

Well everyone have a good day today!

It's another gloomy and rainy day, today. Not as warm, either. Only 68 for our high.

I got a phone call from Mom early this morning letting me know that my uncle in Florence, AL died last night. He's Mom's baby sister's husband. I don't know, yet, when the funeral service will be. No arrangements have been made, yet. We'll be traveling, along with Mom, to Florence when we know what day (possibly, Thursday). He'll be having a full military funeral, and Cary is to take part in the service.

Cary has put on several pounds, since he last wore his suit, so I've got to get him in it today to see if it still fits. I'm good on my dress clothes. I bought several outfits when my aunt and uncle died 2 years ago within 2 weeks of each other. They were husband and wife. I only have 3 aunts left, no uncles. 2 are Mom's sisters and one Sister-in-law.

@WanderLore LED Christmas bulbs don't give off significant heat. You need the regular bulbs for that to work, and I wouldn't trust it! A neighbor tried it back in the day with his three apple trees. It failed.

Check with your extension agent about "best practices" for preserving blossoms during a freeze. They use portable fruit heaters and smudge pots (banned in some places) in FL. You might be able to make something similar out of scrap or . . . See youtube for ideas.

My condolences about your uncle, SB!

It's 48 degrees here with full sun. I finished working online this morning. I'm going for my walk in a few minutes, after I do a quick scan of the news. Since it's Super Tuesday, I'm keeping an eye open for problems.

I saved a couple of crops on semi dwarf trees by putting several oil lamps (1 or 2 Aladdin types, or as many flat wick lamps as I had) underneath, about 24" from the trunk and then tossing a light tarp (tied down in a couple places) over the top of the tree.

Prudentwatcher, its nice to see you post your savings and good buys. Shows there are still some out there if you pay attention.

I have no aunts and uncles left, they are long gone and I'm now old. I have one cousin that is a few years older them I am that is still left. We grew up together until she married and moved away. Sorry to hear about your uncle SB.

Its overcast and wet. Not raining but wet from so much rain yesterday and last night. Its supposed to get up to 80 today, which is too warm for me, but I'm hot natured, DH likes it because he is cold natured.

My subscribe and save order is due tomorrow. I'm saving a few bucks on things that are kind of pricey. Still trying to cut back on my spending. I cut out prime on Amazon, too easy to order something and not have to pay shipping, can be mindless spending.

I've hardly been running the furnace this past month, DH uses a small heater in the bedroom and next to his chair where is computer is and that's it besides the wood stove. We've almost stopped using the wood stove what with the weather warming up and my allergies causing me to have a horrible cough, the wood stove makes it worse. We go through this every year.

DH is out doing his thing and I'm still sitting in front of the computer.

Oh, I just checked, and it's true...yay!!

I still love the original. McGee reminds me of our yougest son. They had a good episode last week commemorating Ducky; it mainly featured Jimmy but Tony showed up for a minute.
