Canning, ironing, and helping to split firewood, today. We're also partying (not really, but almost) over our statewide Republican victory last night.

I'm making spaghetti with homemade meat sauce tonight for supper. I'd like to make a big batch of the sauce, and can it, but not today. That's another project for another day.

DH is feeling a whole lot better, he got a good night's sleep. I'm also better but still dragging. I haven't had coffee in a couple of days which means I also haven't had any DE, which I swear gives me some energy. I woke up congested but resisted the temptation to take something for it and am starting to clear up enough that I can breathe through my nose. There are still sick folks in the area.

I've had some deliveries from amazon and need to get all that stuff put away. My little candle warmer came and I haven't even opened the box. I've ordered some bulk herbs, just a few, they are expensive. Now to educate myself on their use. I may be asking questions, although probably a tea for most things.

What herbs did you order? I can help!

Hi everyone! I overdid last week and that shopping trip tired me out even more than usual and I haven’t gotten as much done as I would have liked.

It seems like everything has been so hectic, so many things coming up that needs to be dealt with either right now or yesterday! We’re behind where we hoped to be on the shower remodel but farm work and livestock has to come first. Thankfully we have another bathroom to get a shower but it’s definitely not as convenient and that tub/shower is really narrow but the mess of a work in progress stresses me out.

DH and I never felt that we completely got over whatever we had several weeks back, and now he’s been really sick again. He got in to see our Dr. yesterday and he put him on two different antibiotics, cough pearls to take during the day and a cough syrup with codeine in it. He rested much better last night and feels better today although he hasn’t felt horrible, the coughing has worn him out and he’s very sore from it all.

He went to get a part for the shower and came back in with 2 whole pork loins (that he had sliced for free) and a forty lb box of sweet potatoes that a local store had on special, yay! I had already put an order in for a 20 lb box of sweet potatoes with youngest grandson for FFA fundraiser so I’m gonna have to find more ways to use them up. The 20 lb box was $22.00 but I like to help support the kids, the 40 lb box was $18.15 plus tax, just seemed to good a deal to pass up on especially in this crazy world right now. I’ll be making a Kroger list for the items worth cherry picking this week.

Well my journey with the walnuts has begun! A bumper crop for sure. The corn sheller idea works great on the hulls that are black. Waiting on the shells to dry out before I try to crack them. Apples are a work in progress but I am getting there! Anyone ever canned mandarin oranges? The store bought in cans appears to all be from China but the fresh are grown in USA. So if I can them could add variety to my fruit stash! Still looking at recipes.
Thanks for the corn sheller idea, Anna 43!

I had the delusion that if I lived long enough to retire that things would be smooth sailing.
Evidently, the last Dr. appt. I had, they entered my insurance info incorrectly. I spent a very frustrating hour and fifteen minutes on the phone with the Drs. office, insurance, and Medicare --- and I still have no idea if anybody is going to pay the claim they have refused twice. The Drs. office told me it was my fault, Medicare implied that I was stupid, and the lady with the insurance company was ready to strangle both of them thru the phone lines... What a lovely morning.

Yes. I'll look in the fridge tomorrow for the enzyme I found that makes removing the pith much, much easier. I can them in natural, no extra sugar, orange juice because of my diet. That's up to you. Just don't can them in plain water.

I generally peel, pull off all lose pieces of pith and break into segments. Put skins in one bag, segments in another, add enzyme. When it's done I have peels to powder or use for recipes. And I can put uo the segments without the bitter flavor the pith bring.

Alive and kicking. Seriously tired. But okay.

Got some 1 lb cheeses at $2.50/lb. I really should have bought more.

Found the Nog that is safe for son and I. It's too expensive to buy frequently so I'll likely only buy it one or two more times this season.

Punted and ordered BBQ for dinner. Simple, easy, and we both devoured.

Not this weekend, but looking at putting in silt fences where the new water flow paths are causing washout. Takes longer, but at minimum it should stop the washing out. Any soil it catches to help build back up the area is just a bonus.

Really don't like the new toilet. Fortunately we didn't toss the old one yet. We're going to see if we can use the pressure washer on it to clear out the siphon jet that wouldn't clear. I really hadn't realized how weak toilets had gotten in 15 years.

Going to get some RedGard or Semco to use in the bathroom for some spots. Probably RedGard. Semco is meant for outdoor use. And get new wall cove trim to put up after I put the Redgard down.

Just lots of little projects. If I'm not hurting too much tomorrow, I'm going to go ahead and keep working on the tomato bed. I've got to pull the heavy duty ground mat, clear weeds, and get new, normal weight ground cover down. Then start slicing that for onion starts that should arrive in about two weeks. I haven't looked under the frost cover at the winter plants yet. And the garlic is just poking its head up, pretty as you please.

Oh, and per the scale this morning, I'm down 8 pounds. I really expected my body to fight me more on this. I forget that it really likes keto.

This will be the first post (I'm too lazy tonight to walk to the other house to get my books).

Marshmallow Root: Althaea officinalis
You can also use the leaves, but the root is used most often. A lot of herbalists use marshmallow to balance out formulas because it is a very moistening herb. In fact, if you make it into a tea, it will only last about 3 days in the fridge before getting pretty slimy. Even just brewing it, you can tell a difference in the texture or mouth feel of the tea.

Traditionally, marshmallow was used for poultices and treating wounds. I use it in my GERD remedy syrup as it is really a great demulcent for any type of epithelial tissue. I drink it almost every day as I've noticed it really helps with skin dryness (and to me makes my wrinkles less noticeable). It makes for an earthy tasting slightly sweet tea. Due to the amount of mucilage it produces (both the herb and the response in the body), it is not advised to take any sort of medication or supplement with it as it will delay the breakdown of capsules (picture them getting surrounded in slime and not really breaking down until much later in the digestive process).

I have made marshmallow tincture as a requested product, but it's not something I would otherwise do. Marshmallow works best as a water extraction due to the high mucilage component.

Thank you so much, this one I was looking for a tea. I make tea a cup or so at a time.

You inspired me to order one of the warmers. I want it for those occasions when our electric goes out for a short period of time and I want to heat my coffee, etc. without dragging out the heavy equipment plus it's cute lol.

We have a bumper crop of the ankle breakers too and I'm pretty sure we have a corn sheller somewhere around here. I'd already decided this was the year to at least gather them since they are such a good source of protein and we have so many walnut trees, there is an abundance, even in bad years.

I plan to enlist the grandkid's help this weekend...they love to work and DH pays them for their efforts. These are some of the biggest I've ever seen and if I don't do something with them, DH is going to and it won't involve eating them lol. He cusses every time he walks to his shop and I keep asking him to give me a few more days. He makes a good point, they are so prolific and we have so many trees that somebody is going to break something.

I've watched a few videos over the years and seen a few different methods for processing them...will do a refresher course in the next few days. I'm thinking power washer at this point.

My parents spread the walnuts in the tire tracks in the lane to the barn. Driving the truck over them pealed the husk off. Then we shelled them in the winter. They will keep a year or more in the shell. My tree just made walnuts for the first time this year. I have about a dozen nuts. I am excited to try my new nut cracker from Lems. It is for walnuts. Most nut crackers aren't heavy enough for black walnuts.

Hubby passed a kidney stone last night. Hopefully that is the last one. The switch to water with lemon from a fresh lemon has maybe made the difference. One was all that showed up on the xray last month. He was hurting last night after it passed, but he started antibiotics on Monday for a UTI so other than maybe extending them another day or 2 he should be fine.

We had to go to Conway yesterday for a different dr appointment. While there we did a couple of stops looking for Christmas for the little kids. Toys have really gone up. We got a couple of things, but not much. All got some socks that they will like. Still looking for some good toys.

Everyone have a blessed day

I'm not feeling well, today. I think I over did it, yesterday, plus, my body always reacts to a low pressure system coming in. Just all achy and stiff, today, feeling rather blah.

With the cold front moving in, we have rain chances. I hope we get some good rains out of it. I think I've lost one azalea from the drought, already, even though, I've tried to keep them watered.

I have my Sam's list all made out to send in the order, but Cary told me not to send it. Since, we'll be in Tupelo for my Mac Degen appointment, Tuesday, he wants to go in store to shop. I haven't been inside the store in months. They have a big sale going on, and I would like to take advantage of it on a few things that I use regularly. I'm sure Cary will love getting his tins of European butter cookies, too.

I’m sitting in the parking lot at VA. We are a little early fo his appointment but he went in anyway, to appease me we stopped at Wendy’s instead of mCdonalds for food. Good grief it’s expensive but I got a salad extra so it cost more. I was feeling lousy when we left the house but I didn’t want him to come by himself, best to stick together

The weather has cooled off to a much more comfortable temperature today. It was downright hot outside yesterday! It’s really overcast today but no rain yet. The wind yesterday took a lot of leaves off the trees.

Emptied a shelf in the pantry of pressure canner and other canning items to go downstairs to make things easier to organize foods in there. I‘m set up for canning down there, it’s just been more convenient up here because stairs are not easy for me. But it needs to be done and I’ll just have to plan accordingly. I worked in there yesterday and today and made a noticeable difference but then I look around and see so much else I need to do. It’s nice to see the floor in there again LOL!

DH finished getting the concrete backer board up, taped and mudded yesterday. He’s planning on starting on the tiles sometime today. Since he decided to go up to the ceiling rather than where the tub surround was, he’ll have to go get more tile. Ugh, I keep thinking of all that will still have to be done in there, drywall repair, priming, painting etc. We haven’t decided on a shower door yet either.

I was planning on working downstairs for an hour or so today but I’m not sure if that’s going to happen.

I Hope everyone feels better and doesn't have the mystery virus going around. Pediatrician said even children were getting it and some had pretty severe symptoms.
We have had much needed rain and temps will be cooler this week but no freezing temps.

We haven't had any meaningful rainfall, since back in the Summer when we were having to water our gardens. Everything here is dust. I am seeing rain approaching us on our local radar, but most times, it isn't enough to do much good. I hope this time is different.

Went to the dump this morning, and all the dumpsters and the recycle bin were full. I barely got my trash in the top of the dumpster and the attendant had locked the recycle bin and told me just to put it in the dumpster. I don't know where he thought it was going to go, it was overflowing. They call the cops on you if you dump stuff on the ground and don't pick it back up. I brought it back home and hubs will have a fit if he finds out... I'll try the other dump next week, the man there is much nicer.
It has turned back to summer again and is absolutely miserable. I end up changing my clothes 3 times a day because it's cold enough to need a coat in the morning but 85 degrees before noon. I just can not handle these temperature changes the way I used to. I had been getting some much need stuff done last week when it was cooler.
Husband knocked over and re-arranged a bunch of stuff in the pantry and I thought I was seriously low on paper towels. Bought 2 six packs and started putting things back where they go, and he had gotten some paper plates off the back wall, and evidently put part of the pack in the kitchen and stuck the rest of it in between the TP stack, which of course made it turn over. He also put paper towels in the TP stack again, so I have 16 rolls that I didn't know I had. That should be enough to last a good while.

Update on walnut adventure. From 2 trees in an hour's time, I picked up about 30 bushels of walnuts. I have 6 trees left to check and pickup! I am now resting! Hard work on top of everything else I have done this morning! Tonight is local high school play off regional football game. We are 1A, 9-12 has 80 students! We are undefeated. Whole town of 400 hundred people will turn out. We love our kids!
Garden is slowly getting cleaned up. Tractor tiller times were cleaned and tightened and asparagus has been moved to permanent home. We are getting there!

We don't have any black walnut trees on our property, but the man who owns the land that joins ours has a huge one. It's half dead and doesn't produce walnuts anymore. We have a huge pecan tree in our backyard that gives me all the pecans I want. It didn't produce anything this year, but I have several gallons of chopped pecans in my freezer. We prefer pecans over walnuts.

I'm glad to hear they will stay good that long because I don't have time to do anything but get the husk off. Maybe all this rain we are getting today will make them easier to get off.

Thank goodness your DH passed that kidney stone. I have only one first cousin and he is plagued with them. Since all our older family members have passed, my son and I are the only ones he has to depend on...he never had children. I need to tell him about the lemon water. I dread what will happen if we don't have access to medical help.

We've had a slow but steady cool rain all day today...hopefully it will go due west and y'all will have it tomorrow. It's a good deal cooler though but it should move out and be sunny and warm-ish tomorrow.

We do too and we have the biggest pecan tree I've ever seen in our front yard and for years it gave us a ton every year but it's going down hill a little and hasn't produced hardly any in the last few years. It's probably about eighty years old from all accounts. The man who planted it when he was a little boy died a few years ago.

I'd give anything if all these walnut trees were pecans. We didn't plant any of them. We had a huge old walnut tree in the front yard when we moved here and people would sneak in our yard when we weren't home and steal all the walnuts. I put a flower bed around it, raising the level of the dirt and killed it...broke my heart because it was kind of a landmark.

Edited to add...all these walnut trees came up volunteer from that tree. There were a couple half grown ones thirty something years ago and now I don't know how many there are. If we live long enough, we could retire on the lumber alone lol.

Before you pick up and save bushels of nuts, crack a few to be sure you really want to mess with them. The smaller ones like my tree has are not worth the effort. If you're not familiar with the taste, decide whether or not you like them.

My late dh's grandmother used to pick them out and sell by the quart for a very good price. She had regular customers year after year. Personally, I do like them. I had an aunt who made divinity and would put black walnuts in it -- yummy! My grandma had a maraschino cherry cake recipe that called for black walnuts that I loved. I've used them in brownies, cookies and breads like pumpkin and banana. People generally either love them or hate them without any middle ground.

I did my shopping today and am exhausted and my back is really hurting. I bought celery and cranberries enough for a year so have those to process for the freezer tomorrow. I pulled a turkey from the freezer to thaw and will cook it probably on Monday. If it's good, then I'll take the meat off and freeze for Thanksgiving.

Every time I shop, my thoughts waiver between I'm thankful I could buy what I needed and a feeling of unease about prices and the empty spaces in the stores. I usually buy two frozen pizzas each month for when I don't want to cook, but today I didn't even look at them because I knew my bill was going to be too high for treats.

When I got home there was a message from the insurance company denying my claim on the furnace due to it being 20 years old. I'm not surprised but was disappointed. It's ridiculous that a furnace only lasts 20 years and then is considered obsolete. I've been in this house since December 1979 and furnace installed last week is the third furnace. We replaced dishwashers 4 or 5 times in less than 25 years, so I told dh no more and I wanted shelves where the dishwasher was.

On the farm where I grew up, Grandfather told Cary that there was a good sprout that had come up underneath his big old pecan tree out in the big pasture. He told Cary that if he wanted to dig it up, he could. We planted it in our backyard the same year we moved into this house. That was back in 1988. That sprout had a taproot almost its size. It's been blessing us with lots of pecans all this time.

I've been watching our local radar off and on all day. As soon as any rain gets close to us, it evaporates. I see all of the rain west of us, but nothing is making it here. At least, not yet.

Thanks for the heads up. DH and grands tested a few last week but it's still a good idea to open a dozen from different parts of the yard before we put in days of work. I love DH but I don't trust his taster.

We made it home from the VA with no issues, DH was able to drive, thank goodness. Even though I didn't feel well when we left I started to feel better as the day progressed. Its so good to be home.

We are looking a 100% rain over night, but we'll see. Like everyone else we do need rain.

Lately my stomach has been upset. I've started taking more of my supplements but they never bothered me before. So I'm splitting them up and not taking them all at once. Also, it may be the stress of all that is going on. We are fine though, feeling better and I wasn't necessarily stressed out while we were in town. Maybe a nice cup of Ginger tea will help.

Some good deals in the last week or so. When I went to make a cake I found I had no chocolate cake mixes left, so I took care of that with BOGO sales and think I have 12 now. Also have some blueberry muffin mixes that were BOGO, more paper plates that were basically BOGO with the sale price (I have a ton of these stashed), some shampoo was on sale. My big score today was at Publix. White Cloud TP was on BOGO, so 12 rolls for 9.99. Not a great deal, but it is my favorite TP and is hard to find here. The cashier pulled two $3.50 coupons out of a bag and scanned them for me, so I only paid $2.99 for the 12 rolls (mega rolls, ultra soft). Haven't bought TP at that price in years :)

I am going to be gone (like out of the country) over Christmas (leaving mid-month) so I have been doing my Christmas shopping. Have gotten great deals on what I have already ordered, so I probably won't spend as much as planned. I save a certain amount every month that goes to pay for gifts, birthday and Christmas, throughout the year. Was worried I would come up short, but I should be okay. I certainly don't do extravagant gifts.

We got a bit of rain last night. It wasn't heavy, or enough to be a drought buster by any means. I'll take what we can get and be thankful for it. It's turned coolish again, too. Only reaching the upper 50's today. Cary started a fire in the woodstove this morning.

We were sent a notice from our community water dept. yesterday, letting us know that we wouldn't have any water pressure for a while. They said that the drought is so bad that the ground is shifting in places causing the water lines to break. We haven't lost our water, but there isn't much pressure. Don't have a clue for how long. We're also still having problems with our electricity going out. Some days, it flickers off and on, then there are days when it goes out for an hour or two. Don't have a clue about that, either.

Anyway, I'm still feeling blah and achy. Some of my fingers are painful and swollen. I had to soak my hands with soap to get my rings off, yesterday. Still swollen this morning. Lupus arthritis.

we are feeling better today, but still feeling blah. Got rain over night for several hours, but not heavy, we too are greatful for what we get. We are colder too, but not too bad.

Water is an issue around here too, the system opened up a new well but the water is brownish. DH was not happy taking a bath in yesterday, doesn't bother me because I'm taking showers now but even if I was taking a bath I always put apple cider vinegar in my bath water, so its always colored anyway.

I have my on going grocery list, but don't feel anxious at all to fill it. If I've forgotten anything we'll do without.
