I've been meaning to stop lurking on this weekly thread and start participating, so now seems to be as good a time as any.

Last week DD's church group held a class here on making sourdough bread. We actually had a girl whose family runs a commercial sourdough bakery in Utah teach us, and she did a phenomenal job. And the bread is to die for. Then I taught a friend and her daughter how to make tortillas. And every spare minute during the day was spent in the garden trying to get it all cleaned up and ready for winter.

This week will be spent making salsa and practicing sourdough baking when I can't be outside cramming in the last bit of time shutting down the garden.

I hadn't even noticed that the new weekly thread hadn't been started, until now. I've been in a whirlwind all morning getting ready for our home fellowship/ Bible study gathering. Plus, today is mine and Cary's 47th wedding anniversary. I just did a quick run through of the main page when I logged in this morning.

This week, we have nothing planned, except for Cary's doctor appt. on Wednesday. It's for a checkup and to find out the results of his CT scans. I'm sure I'll find plenty to do the rest of the week, though.

Our Frisco is all healed up from the roll in the fire ant mound last evening.

Congrats, SB and Cary!! Hope your day is great. I've been canning and trying to straighten up and rotate things in the pantry. Its a never ending job. The ham and bean soup from Kathy's story "Edie" is great, so is the carrot fennel soup.

I have for many many years used gallon sized glass jars/ containers to store dry goods.
As I've aged and developed arthritis in my hands, they have become increasingly difficult for me to handle. So today I emptied 5 of them into smaller containers mostly 1/2 gallon. Ran gallon size through dishwasher and will donate.
Keeping things functional as I age is important. Pliers now have a place in drawer along with can opener and knives. Packaging tries to defeat my arthritis.

Looks like we will get some much needed rain several days this coming week. Daytime temps will still be warm.

That sounds great, school marm! And I’m another one who always means to post on these threads, even writing posts in my head, but never get it done, so I’ll join in today too.

After church and having lunch with some of our family, we stopped at a couple of stores today. One had rolls of gauze on clearance, so we bought four. Another had toilet paper on sale, so we picked up another 12 pack. They also had a cart of fuzzy socks on clearance for $1 and I picked up 12 pair to have on hand or use as extras in gifts.

Yesterday we bought another flat of kidney beans and some other things to add to storage. Hubby also went and picked up a truckload of wood and will be stacking it this afternoon.

We’re both trying to get in better physical shape in preparation for what may be coming, as well as to simply feel better. I’ve been doing a lot of hiking and trying to exercise more. He can’t be on his feet as much, so doesn’t hike, but is trying to push himself to do more physical work. He’s managed to lose almost 30 pounds in the last 2 1/2 months, while I haven’t lost any weight. :(

Oh, I almost forgot, yesterday one of my customers at market gave me a big bag of yarn! She’s 94 or 95 (she’s told me both recently) and is having trouble with her fingers so can’t crochet much anymore. She’s actually a lot of fun. I hope to have as much spirit and mobility when I get to be that old. Her daughter insisted that she move in with them (fortunately she has her own suite including a kitchen), but the daughter doesn’t like her to drive, so she occasionally sneaks out to come to market when the daughter is occupied elsewhere.

Church had a pot luck today for pastor appreciation.

I was desperate to get a bath this morning and since I'm having such a hard time getting in and out of the tub I took a shower instead. Although I got nice and clean it was stressful because I was afraid I'd slip and fall. DH stayed right by the tub, although If I'd fallen he would not have been able to get me up. He did help me get out from just standing up. I immediately put on my robe and laid down for awhile to compose myself.

DH is off to the deer stand for three or so hours.

No rain in sight and it seems like we are having an Indian summer, it has warmed back up.

We're getting your rain, nomifyle. Not pouring but a steady sprinkle.

A friend asked to borrow our tractor today, so after church hubby took the backhoe attachment off and filled it with fuel, ready to be picked up.

We are getting ready to put a covered extension on one side of the barn, so hubby is pulling a section of fencing down now. The cows are supervising and trying to convince us that they weren't fed this morning (they were  ).

I'm enjoying a slow afternoon. Tomorrow I will do a grocery run and stop at the feed store.

I'm also doing garden cleanup. I have three big baskets of peppers to process this week. I might can some cowboy candy, but I think I'm just going to dehydrate most of them.

I'm going to reorganize our big pantry and finish inventory this week. There's so much to do before it gets cold.

Good morning everyone! Thank you for getting the thread started.

I did a grocery run this past Saturday (replacing what we have used) but did spend $10 for pantry items that we use. It is amazing his fast you can build your pantry this way.
Prices continue to astound me.

While out, I made a run to Walgreens as they had 12 packs of tp for $3.75 (instead of $5). I picked up a few to try. Normally our tp is from Amazon. I also picked up a small package of paper towels. These last us a really long time now that we made the switch to cloth napkins a few years ago.

I also want to get in better shape and drop some pounds. I have been lazy with myself and that is never good.

I wish everyone here a wonderful day and week!

I'm sorry folks, I slipped up on starting the thread yesterday - I'll try to remember to warn y'all next time.

It was all my fault 'cause I went out and did the Party Hearty thing. The neighbor lady and I went to a concert Saturday night - it was to see THE bar band that folks my age and a bit older all went to listen to way back in the nineteen hundreds. You never saw such a sea of grey hair  Too bad we all had to wave our arms from our lawn chairs... I gotta admit that they still rocked the place. And line dancing is still in style around here...

Judy, when I had my broken leg, the hospital where I worked loaned me a nifty shower seat - it had a seat that you could sit on, then the seat would slide over in to the tub. Hubs installed a vertical grab bar so that I could pull my seated self over; I also used the grab bar to hang on so I could stand on my good leg and wash all the nooks and crannies. I wonder if the VA might have something like that for you?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check into it. We have one of those blasted garden tubs and I'd say I hate it but I'm glad to have a tub, so I don't hate it. I've been tubless in the past and its not fun, and most tubs in an RV are crap too.

After I had covid my dear brother bought me a shower tub seat of my choice. The problem is I still have to get in the tub. DH has installed grab bars in any place he could and I asure you I hang on, but if I slip it won't be pretty. He stood next to the tub yesterday when I was taking a shower to make sure I didn't slip. My brother also bought one of those nice rain type shower heads. I need to pray better about this.

I'm watchen one of the goats out that is tied up out in the garden. There was a nice big patch of something green and after being out there an hour or so there isn't much left. DH has one of the other goats in the east garden eating down what is left of tomato plants. They are such good lawn mowers. I keep nagging DH that he needs to get them a bale of hay.

Today is one of our commodity days, so we will be going to town, although not the big town.
Its always interesting to see what we are gifted with.

Washing, drying, folding, and putting away a big load of laundry this morning, plus, I had several pieces of clothing that needed ironing. I got that all done, too. Just as we sat down to eat an early lunch, the power went out. It's back on now, but this is beginning to happen more and more here. Last week, it went out for over 2 hours. This time was only a few minutes. A couple of months ago, it went out for about 8 hours. All on clear sunny days with no high winds.

Cary has been working on the wood pile this morning. He plans to do more this afternoon after his after lunch nap. If I have all my housework done by then, I 'm going to help him with it. I can help run the splitter without that hurting my back. Mid 80's today, so it's my kind of outdoor weather. No rain in sight.

The VA will supply just about anything DME that you need. Talk to your PCP about it. Sometimes they have to send you to physical therapy to get the equipment but they supplied my husband with all of the DME we use.

We picked up commodities and a small shop at wm.

Chicken leg quarters, rice, raisins, pasta, some kind of pastry filled something or another, a few canned goods, cheese in one box, but not the other, same with PB. Two big bags of dog food. That will same me about $60. The stored dog food we keep in the she shed seems to hold for a good while. I also have two 60# vaults to hold dog food. Those are full in addition to at least one big bag not yet opened. Now two more big bags.

We got shredded cheese last month and I portioned it out into zip locks, kept two in the fridge and the other in the freezer. We haven't used much. Also some kind of pork in a sauce, DH cooked one last month and it made decent pulled pork sandwiches.

At wm, I got the pizzza they were out of for our last pickup. some more quac, bananas. The bananas we just being un boxed and they all looked just about ripe, in two days they'll be too ripe. I got Dh a couple bags of chips and a bag of blue corn chips for me (shamey shamey).

We have at least two freezers to clean out. The dog is going to have a lot of people food, which won't hurt her. I saw her carrying the deer ribs off the other morning. Some of the food in the bottoms of those freezers are at least 5 years old. I will look through it carefully.

I know there is venison with freezer burn, but I'm not afraid of that, nor is DH. He grew up very poor and I've always been saving about food.

Went to put potatoes in for a late crop and found most of the bell peppers and half the tomatoes were producing again, with more blooms coming. I had pretty much given up on them after the heat this summer shriveled everything. That was a pleasant surprise.
Since we gave the BIL one of the 55-gallon water barrels, we got a dozen of the easier-to-handle 5-gallon jugs. They don't waste as much storage space either.
Last panel expansion of the solar system (this year) should be here tomorrow. Originally scheduled for delivery today, the trucking company has delayed it...so now I'll have to take off from work to accept it.

We haven't dug our sweet potatoes and we went out to the garden this evening to check on them. We always have a good harvest...always over 100 pounds. This year it looks like it may be a complete bust for the first time ever. I'm still not 100% physically from the sciatica but I'm doing a little better every day so we didn't do much...have learned not to overdo it or I go backwards. Anyway, it will put a big hole in the preps. We love those sweet potatoes and they keep all winter. I'll be getting canned from the grocery store now. We keep it anyway for those quickie meals. I'm not a fan of home canned sweet potatoes...they get too soft and mushy for my taste. I had plans to change my technique a litte this year to see if I could overcome that but it will have to wait til next year.

The only real difference this year is we put a little strip of shade cloth over them...I'm beginning to not like shade cloth...ruined my tomatoes this year too. Of course, I've learned a whole lot about how to use it through my many mistakes.

I've inventoried my pantry and filled most of the holes except for the few things that were out of stock last week but it still feels like something is missing so I'm getting my original master list out that I made over a decade ago and I will see. All you younger folks who think you'll never forget anything need to make lots of lists. It looks like there are going to be lots of shortages this year because of crop failures, etc. so I'm motivated to stack things a little deeper.

As far as store bought canned goods go, I've learned a few things in the last year. Aldi corn and green beans are far superior to anything I can get at WM and Harps, about the only grocery chain left in this entire region. The Keystone canned beef I can get locally at WM is just as good a quality as any home canned beef I've ever ate and is actually a little cheaper than I can can myself. I haven't tried their canned ground beef, chicken or turkey because I can still do those cheaper myself and so far, I've never tasted commercially canned chicken that comes close to home canned but then again, I have not treid Keystone's. I plan to try it but the price point would keep me from buying a bunch. I can still buy chicken cheap enough to make it worth canning at home plus I can can it bone-in and that is a game changer for taste.

Happy belated anniversary to @SouthernBreeze and @CaryC!

We got the Sam’s and Amazon orders in yesterday and unpacked the boxes, I’ll probably head down to the basement today and do some more much needed inventory, sorting, organizing and putting away. We had our granddaughter yesterday and she was her lively, busy little self and had a blast “building” rooms and houses with the empty boxes.

DH brought up everything from the basement I had set aside last week so I’ve got to get it all put away! I’ll be glad to get the pantry work done and get back to my decluttering and cleaning in the rest of the house. I want to get some things off to Salvation Army tomorrow so I’ll be giving some quick looks around today to see what I can add to the box I’ve already got started. Maybe (fingers crossed) I can drag DH back to his closet to finish up going through his things.

We had beef stew leftovers for supper last night so I need to get something planned for tonight. Zucchini and/or yellow squash will definitely be on the menu.

We need to get the rest of the bell peppers picked and ready for the freezer soon too.

The weather is supposed to be nice all week. Sunny and in the mid to upper 80's. While the weather is still nice, we're trying to get as much wood cut, split, and stacked as we can. That's our project for today, again. Once the weather turns off cold and wet, there won't be much work done, then. Taking a lunch break right now. I've got some things I need to do inside, before I get back out there.

I'm thinking of making a cake, but I haven't decided what kind, yet. Just sandwiches and home fries for supper, tonight.

Tomorrow is big town day for Cary's checkup. I want to look for new glasses, too. I've got the RX, so I can go wherever I want to get them. I know what kind of frames I'm looking for. Also, there is a new coffee and donut shop in town. Cary wants to check it out.

Well the rain did not materialize. None in forecast though it is supposed to cool off next week. This hot weather has hung on too long. Saw my first yellow leaves on grapevine a couple of days ago.

The large glass jars have been spoken for by family. Maybe I can get the last 2 emptied soon. I don't use plastic but will use smaller glass jars.

A quick question for those of you who wear makeup. I have a really large makeup case full of different kinds of makeup, eye shadows, blush, eye liners, powders, mascaras, etc. I have several of each that have never been opened, but are a few years old. I don't wear makeup of any kind, now. I was thinking of throwing it all out, but keeping the items that haven't been opened, just in case I wanted to play around with it on special occasions. Would the unopened items still be good to use? It's about 3 yrs. old.

I only wear face powder, because I tend to have oily skin and can't stand that oily shine. I'm going to go ahead and throw out everything that's already opened and used out of. Some of it is really old. If the unopened is still good, I'll keep it. It was bought 3 yrs. ago for DS's wedding, but I never opened it.

I do the same with just a little translucent powder to take away the shine. Sometimes I put on eyebrows, and I always wear lip stick, when I go out. Around the house, nothing. I looked down at what I had on the other day when a UPS driver came to the and it was pitiful. So I drag around the house in what ever. Since I always worked in an office and had to dress up and wear dress shoe, often times heels, at home it was/is what ever. I have plenty of nice clothes for when I leave the house place.

I went out to the she shed to inventory my cases of jars. I'm in decent shape with 1/2 gallon, low on quarts and have a good supply of quarts, DH just told me there is a lot of rice and beans in the upright freezer. He's going to bring them in so they can thaw out so I can put them up. If the beans are red beans I'm donating them to the church. They need rice to go along with them and I rarely eat rice. I have plenty of other beans, probably several hundred pounds of dried beans and peas.

And I have a good supply of canned beans and peas. Its just about to get soup time and I'm blessed to have mucho ingredients to go in soups.

Cary isn't a big soup eater, but I'm going to be making more soups and stews to can this winter. He'll eat it if that's what I fix, along with cornbread. I have lots of dry beans in my freezer, too. I plan to make large batches to can. I've got plenty of quart canning jars now that I'm only canning in pints for just the two of us out of the garden.

Back in the 90's, I stopped wearing makeup. Any kind of eye makeup caused my eyes to become irritated so much so that I usually had to take it right back off. My eye specialist told me to throw it away. He told me not to use any kind of creams around my eye area, either. So, I just decided not to wear any makeup at all. I use the face powder when I go out in public to give a bit of coverage, and sometimes a lip gloss or balm.

I wear a little mascara on Sundays occasionally, and that's pretty much it. So I'm no help there lol, but yeah, I would toss the opened stuff and keep the unopened.

I was an office manager for years, so I am happy to not dress up much anymore. Jeans, comfy t-shirt, with maybe a flannel over for cool days, is my go-to. I try to be not too sloppy, but some days, you just can't help it.

I keep two 5 gallon buckets of each flavor of dried beans that we eat, and then I periodically can a dozen or so quarts to keep on the shelf for quick use. But I'm feeding seven regularly, and storing for around a dozen people, so I try to keep a lot on hand. We have 4 kids plus my Mom at home, and 3 kids out of the house, plus at least one serious partner. And since Philip's mom, who is 77, lives five miles away, we plan for her as well.

Philip got the burn pile torched off yesterday. Garden is cleared out. The kids moved a cord of firewood up to the house. The rest is staying in the woodshed until it's needed.

And our temps are supposed to wander down to freezing, or maybe slightly below, on Friday and Saturday nights, so it's going to be needed!

@SouthernBreeze When I went through all my personal things a few months ago, I couldn’t believe all the make up I still had even though I never wore much to begin with. I had a new translucent powder compact that I gave granddaughter to play with, kept a tube of mascara that’s never been opened and trashed everything else. I figure if I decide to use any again, I’ll buy fresh.

I worked in the laundry room and got the household/laundry supplies DH brought up put away, still have the pantry items to do. Took all the items we use in the shower/bath to the other bathroom since DH is getting ready to start the job of taking the tub/shower surround out. I so dread the mess that’s going to go along with getting it out and the new shower going in but…you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette.

I worked awhile in the basement pantry, added the new items and have a few shelves set up like I’ve been wanting them. The store bought canned meat/fish proteins are now all together and organized according to date, and the same with canned fruit. I set some things aside to be brought up to the everyday pantry. There’s still so much that needs to get done down there, I never even got started on the tomato products so I’ll concentrate on those the next time then I need to inventory the home canned items. I never got around to checking the bucket items the last time I did an inventory so this time around it really needs to be a more thorough job. Oh, to have the stamina and energy I once had!!!

Powders probably ok. Creams, especially opened ones, I would toss.
I downsized my makeup over the years. Less is more at this point. But i do wear a bit of makeup when in public. Don't want to scare anyone!
I do more skin care products than makeup. My skin responds well to Vit C.

I am way behind you guys in the bean storage! I store mostly pinto. I don't cook them much in the summer. If they are too old they don't get soft. I keep some dried black eyed peas and a few ljma beans. My husband does not like the limas. All are served with homemade cornbread of course.

At this age I just don't want to maintain and rotate a huge pantry.
