We've spent the day taking an inventory of everything while keeping one eye on the streaming tv news.
Our minds think alike! We too inventoried. No gaping holes but areas I would like to be deeper. Taking care of that! Anyone looked at the population of your surrounding area? We are working on it. I teasingly said we should just build a pig pen that would surround the property!

Same here. No huge holes, but Cary is stocking more of certain items. I've made out a pretty large list for a Sam's order to add to what I've already got in the pantry. I won't be going to Sam's. Every time we go, there are at least one or two Muslim families in there. Sometimes, it's only men.

The population in our little rural community is a mix of blacks and whites. No Muslims, but there is a good size population of Muslims in Tupelo. We'll only be going for doctor appointments there. That's it.

Gassed up the car and took it in to finish up a repair job that only needed a small part. My auto repair folks report having long waits for parts and sometimes incomplete shipments, but now at leased my car is fixed.
Decided to look at the Prime Day sales and found quite a few items that will be Christmas gifts, so those are ordered. Amazon is fine if they actually ship items, but am finding that sometimes they just dont ship things and then it is a long wait until they get around to it. If we have harder times coming, planning for at least a quiet Christmas with useful items will be a morale booster for the family.
Otherwise, filling in holes and deepening pantry stocks as things go on sale. No matter what happens in the wide world, food prices keep going up, and eating is still required.
Garden is pretty much finished, although kale and celery are still going strong- kale chips are my favorite! always a good feeling to have the harvest in and things buttoned down... My best to all.

I have gotten really tightly wound from the news on TV as well. Dr says that some folks who cannot sleep because of the news just don't listen to the news anymore. Afraid I can't do that so I just keep on keeping on. One new thing I have begun to do is list all the foods I can cook, bake, etc from scratch. I know I can buy them but if that is closed for us one day what can I do about it?
Well, my list is what I can make from scratch such as mayonnaise, salad dressings, cake mixes, cookie mixes, bisquick, etc. Now I will look at this new list to figure out where our "holes" are and what I need to shop for while I still can. I have never looked at our inventory from this perspective before so it may be quite eye-opening for me.
All of us are having some dental work done in case that is something denied to us in the future.
And keeping really up-to-date on any medical issues we kind of keep putting off. I am trying to feel happy about any item we can cross off the lists but when you look at how long these lists are, it is a little off-putting.

After church tonight we stopped by the Dollar General. The did not have what I was looking for but they did have one package of Hereford Meatballs in a pouch. It was 4.00 but I bought it anyway. Its only a little cheaper at wm. I thought it would be something nice to have on the shelf that is totally easy. I could eat it right out of the package but DH would have to have his warmed. Anyone have any experience with this product.

I really need to be taking an inventory but since I've been under the weather I've not gotten anything done. Its such a blessing that DH spearheaded redoing the pantry room last winter. In stead of trying to put new stuff on the bottom, I've been letting it pile up in front of the shelves, the new stuff is all dated.

And that's such a good idea of making a list of things I can easily cook. I know some of you ladies already have this perfected. One problem with it is DH is so hard to cook for and maybe I'm partially using that as an excuse, who knows. I've had such a good handle on this kind of thing in the past.

I had a nice long telephone chat with a dear lady here in the community that I've known all my life. She's not an idle gossip but we did cover a lot of ground in two and a half hours. She has several siblings and they are all very close, its so nice to know people like that. I have a group of cousins like that I consider the salt of the earth. Unfortunately almost all of my first cousins a nuts..;

Woohoo! Rain - finally. Tomato and pepper plants that I had written off as lost causes are taking off now that temps aren't ridiculously high. Hopefully the fall potatoes come through, as the early ones were mediocre.

Gas prices at several stations had gone up, but my "usual" station was still 0.30/gal lower, so topped off the few empty cans.

Wife found some nice yarn for $2/skein...she's stocking back up since she's getting better knitting.

Found a nice vintage radio that cover 200khz to 30 mhz...it may need a little alignment for optimum performance but works rather well as-is. If any sort of CME or EMP is imminent, it is expendable, but should be easy to repair. It came with the schematic and assembly manual.

Gave the BIL a 55 gallon water drum and pump. They are close to having their water supply affected by the salt wedge in the Mississippi River. Recently retired from a job where things like that were normal provided and hasn't made the full transition to civilian life, but he's getting there.

Be safe and stay frosty!

I was asking Dh the other day about our large water tanks and he said one or two may have a leak, but we have 10 or more. In the woods across the road is a good stream, but in the 13 years I've been back here I've never gone in the deep woods. Have to give that some consideration.

I've been thinking about my ongoing wm list. My plan has been to schedule it shortly after the 20th. Some things on the list I would be out of if I can't full fill that list, but I could make do. I have a large pak of TP on the list, but that's just to replace, I have a supply. I'd miss a couple of things on the list but I can make do with out them. I still haven't gotten that potting soil for my new planters on the front porch, but I could spend more for less at the dollar general about 6 miles away, ugh. Or I could pilfer some soil from a couple of the raised beds, but they might have bugs in it. Oh well. Chances are I'll be able to get to the store when I planned to, but if not, I'll make do.

One the water front again, I have some water containers that I need to fill from the faucet, after all we rarely use 50% of what we pay for every month, much of that is possible because we have those ISB tanks.

We're staying put, too, until Monday. I have a mammogram scheduled for Monday in Big town. We won't be anywhere near the Muslim neighborhood. It's clear on the other side of the city.

We're both still finishing up on our inventories, today. Adding to our lists as we go.

We got a tidbit of rain last night. Every little bit helps, but not nearly enough to break our ongoing drought.

I have an appointment at the VA on the 18th and DH has one on the 20th at the Shreveport VA. A very dangerous town anyway, God help us. Although it is a straight shot to the the VA.

ETA: the VA is across the river from Barksdale Airforce Base.

I also have a doctor's appt. on the 18th to have my vision checked for new glasses. Cary has one on the 25th with his urologist to find out what his CT scan results are. The 22nd is our 47 yr. wedding anniversary! We usually celebrate in Big Town, but we are rethinking that.

Praise the Lord and pass the bread, I'm finally feeling so much better and I'm working on the kitchen. Having to take breaks and I'm timing them lest I get carried away and forget the time.

If may have forgotten that DH got a rooster Sunday, Poor hen, he won't leave her alone. DH did order 20 baby chicks and oh my goodness they are supposed to be here on Friday.

It's been raining since last night with forecast for it to continue. We need to moisture, but crops are still in the field. I think most of the beans are in and a good start has been made on the corn so hopefully the farmers will not have to wait too long to get back in the field. I feel so blessed that I had four straight days of perfect weather to get my garden cleared off.
Got my whooping cough booster, to the grocery store and made Bible study on time. Now I need to finish lunch and take the car up for its semiannual check-up. I called early Sept. to have my furnace checked and they still haven't called to schedule a time. Guess I should call them again.

The body and I compromised, so I got some house things done. The garlic is peeled for planting, and I now know how many cloves I have to plant. That will make time with help more productive.

And I got the last of the garden sweet peppers sliced and in the fridge. I am hoping to can them this weekend.

Moldy, be careful. Will keep you in prayers.

After all my indecision about house church, I ended up not going. My tooth started hurting again. Better this morning, I'm praying I don't have to have it extracted.

DH is on the way to the post office to pick up his baby chicks, he missed having chickens. The rooster Rudy is still giving the hen, Daisy Mae, grief all day, poor girl.

Over cast and cloudy, but no rain predicted, its supposed to get up to 85 today.

Almost finished in the kitchen, will get that done today.

Stay safe.

I've been changing out our closets to winter clothing and taking an inventory of what we might need to add this morning. I also have a pile of ironing to do. I need more pants for the winter, so, I'll be sending in an order to Blair, since I got a $10 off coupon from them, yesterday, along with a new catalog. Free shipping, too, on orders over $39.

Cary is working on the firewood pile. He's steadily making progress on it. Our temps will call for the wood heater to be fired up this weekend. Light frost is predicted with high's only in the 60's.

I've also started my grocery list for my middle of the month trip. It's always just to pick up a few items such as produce, milk, and what not. Hopefully, we can get this done one day next week, probably Tuesday.

@nomifyle Consider separating the rooster and hen, I’m sure she’s miserable. A rooster really shouldn’t be in with less than 8 hens as he’s too rough on them. I would hate to see your Daisy Mae seriously injured or worse. Good luck with all the new chicks. Did he ordered all of one breed or a few different ones? I sure hope your issue with your tooth settles down soon.

I’m still sick and haven’t gotten as much done as I had planned this week, however I have been able to get some things checked off my list. I did get all the houseplants taken care of I’m very tempted to go ahead and order a few more.

The family got in from their trip about midnight Thursday morning, was very happy to get the texts from them that said “home”.

Picked up a half bushel of golden delicious apples to eat fresh and to prep to freeze for pies. Also picked up a peck of Jon-a-Gold apples - best ones for caramel apples in my opinion  I also got a peck of pears, but those will be eaten fresh. If I manage to get them done this weekend, I'll pick up the same amount again.

I loaded my son up with the last of the hot peppers out of the garden and the dried garlic I grew for him this afternoon.

The garden still producing some tomatoes and there is still green peppers but mostly of the hot-hot type. Might turn before freeze but we’ve harvested a bunch of everything this last few months.

Still waiting on parts we had to send back for my wife’s new walk in shower but as soon as that comes in it’ll get finished and we are done with the last maintenance/improvements that we should have to make. We’ve lived here over 45 years and have remodeled at least 5 times and the people we bought it from wouldn’t recognize it.

Waiting for the shoe to fall from the evils of the religion of peace if it’s going to and keeping on keeping on.

I decided to process the tomatoes from the last picking today. Took me 4 1/2 hours and I ended up with six pints of spaghetti sauce and 11 pints of juice. Twenty-two and a half pounds of tomatoes weighted after washing and stemming. I did 10 pounds for the spaghetti sauce and got it started cooking down before I started on the 12 pounds. Thank goodness that I have a Squeezo so no pealing. My back is hurting so bad that I pulled out my walker just in case my legs decide to give out. Everything is washed up and some put away. The rest will have to wait for another day (or maybe two).

We're under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. Guess just south of me are tornado warnings. When I stepped outside to toss tomato waste into the garden, the atmosphere "felt" like bad weather, so I wasn't surprised to hear the warning issued. It's been raining off and on since Wednesday evening with some heavy showers and wind last night.

I deplore waste and if I hadn't processed the tomatoes today, they would have had to be thrown out. I still have quite a few green or partly ripe to eat on over the next few weeks. With the current political climate (somebody should issue a warning about that too) and the warnings about food shortages, I decided to add to my pantry.

My car checkup went well. Everything was okay except more air for tires and cost me only $20. I haven't put on enough miles for an oil change since May.

A surprise for us. 2 inches of rain in approx 14 hrs. Nice and slow with very little run-off. That was Wednesday. More rain today! Finally cooled off here. Been in 60's and 70's. We managed to sow seed in 2 thirds of the chicken pen and added to the turnips and collards. So glad the timing worked out. Able to plant that comfrey and candy onion sets. Will plant cipollinis in Jan and those big texas onions that will store up to 5 months. Gathered the spider webs and golden rod. Hope to get some mullien dug up tomorrow and transplanted. Our 40 year old neighbor was killed by a drunk driver on the way home from work Monday afternoon. So sad. Attended funeral today. The wife and their only child just seemed lost. He was the nicest guy. Just makes you realize how short life is.

Frustrated. Friend went to the two local big box hardware stores for items to turn old pex pipe into arches for the garden. Two of the items were just flat out not in stock. The third item was in stock -small quantity at highly inflated prices. I'm just going to have to order from Amazon.

But I did have to acknowledge that Amazon will work because this is something that can wait until next week.

He could not get multipacks of foldable razor knives at either store. They are listed as in stock but not anywhere on the floor. He got one for now. (The void has eaten the last one from my bulk buy a few years back.) I'll just have to buy a couple of them when they pop up for holidays sales. Those I prefer to get the Kobalt or Husky ones because I know they will work like they are supposed to.

I'm going to try to get some more sleep now. Son is sleeping late and that is the best time.

Thanks, I'll pass it by DH about isolating the roo. He got a mixture of babies, they looked so cute, all different colors. He has a special room for in the chicken house for babies. I;m not a chicken hugger, but I did stick my hand in the box and pet a couple of them.

Today is election day in Louisiana, we'll get a conservative governor again.

Kitchen is in good shape, only a few more things to get done, maybe I should pay myself that $100 except it has to come out of my pocket. haha

Renee, wold you share how you prep and freeze your pie apples?

I picked up a small bushel yesterday and need to prep them out. Freezing sounds like it would take less time than canning. I hurt my knee at the end of August and it is not getting better. Still working on getting the house in order and not giving it much time to rest. Need to get in the garden to do the fall clean up but keep procrastinating. It’s an uphill walk to get there and I cringe at the thought!!!

i finally got into DH’s dresser and closet and working through his t-shirt hoarde. LOL. I promised not to throw any out but making it more manageable for everday wear. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone having sentimental t-shirts that they never wear!!! Putting in new drawer liners as I go through.

Nothing going on here, today, except Cary has been working on the huge wood pile this morning. We're about ready to start using firewood, so he'll have plenty to replace what we use this winter.

Our volunteer fire department is hosting a huge fish fry this afternoon. We always support them and will be going to that for supper tonight. They always do a great job, whether it's an emergency response, a house fire, wildfire, or cooking fish. We've had to have their help, twice. EMT came out when Cary had his seizure, and once when I caught the wood heater flue on fire.

I’m working on the laundry today and DH is doing some odd jobs around the farm. I think when he comes in for lunch I’m gonna drag him off to the bedroom! To start going through at least of few of his chest of drawers in the hopes that it will snowball into getting his closet done too. I’d really like to have another load of donations out of here this coming week. They only take donations a few days a week for so many hours on those days. And we need to get a real idea of what needs to be replaced.

Im still working my way through this illness, woke up this morning with a new thing, my right eye stuck shut with goop and the white of my eye blood red. Just one eye and the same thing happened to DH during his bout with it. He’s on the mend finally. I was thinking it’s been so long since the other family members and DH got sick that I was in the clear but that proved to be wrong. Thankfully I didn’t get as sick as he’s been, but I’m so ready for this stuff to go away, I have things I need to get done.

@nomifyle Baby chicks are so much fun to watch.

I finished digging the sweet potatoes. I am guessing I have about 70 pounds. I mowed the 2 upper gardens. Next I want to till it to hopefully kill some of the grass. We will add mulch once I get it tilled.

Hubby and I have been working on our firewood today. It was cool enough that I had to wear a flannel shirt over my tee shirt. We looked at the eclipse a few times while out there. We had eye protection for it.

I went to my favorite resale shop this week. I needed more flannel pants to wear around the house. A couple of mine are almost ready for the rag bag. The shop had put out their fall and winter wear so they had lots. In a couple of months the lounge pants will be scarce.

Our son in law works at Tyson. They have an employee sale on chunk roast. He is going to get us a case to try. There are 5 roast in a box. A box is about 12 pounds.

We are trying to plan out our meals so we have something to warm up easy after working. I made a small cake today too. I have started measuring out a cake mix and only using 1/2 at a time. That is plenty of cake for a few days and none goes to waste. I am cooking some little steaks for supper tonight but I am also cooking chili. The chili will be quick to warm up after church tomorrow.

Have a blessed weekend everyone.
