COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - The Brazos County Health District is investigating a suspected case of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus in a Texas A&M University student.
Local health officials say that the patient traveled from Wuhan, China, where the current coronavirus outbreak originated. Dr. Eric Wilke, the Brazos County Health Authority, said the patient developed mild symptoms after returning within the 14-day window, then seemed to be improving.
The patient went to an undisclosed hospital in Brazos County on Wednesday night where doctors took samples that have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta for testing. Local health officials say they don’t believe anyone in the hospital was exposed.
The health district says the patient is currently in isolation at his home while precautionary testing is being done, and results are expected this weekend or early Monday.
At a press conference Thursday, health officials declined to answer some questions about the patient including his age and race, citing patient confidentiality rights.

Officials were also unable to answer what airport the patient reentered the United States through, whether he was on campus before going to the emergency room and which local hospital he visited.
If the preliminary diagnosis is confirmed, health officials will begin a contact tracing process to identify the people with whom the student may have come in contact during a 14-day period.
Dr. Wilke said the Health District was operating under the assumption the student attended classes Wednesday but added Texas A&M University has been deemed a low risk for coronavirus.

The coronavirus sickened hundreds of people in Wuhan, China before spreading to other Asian cities. The only other known U.S. case is in Washington state where a man was diagnosed after returning from a trip to Wuhan.
The virus can cause flu-like symptoms including fever, cough, shortness of breath, and sore throat.
