If in fact the morality rate is 3% now, then this matches up with the mortality rate of the Spanish flu.

On GLP yesterday or the day before, people using VPN's were reporting from wuhan? that the actual purported official death toll was 170, not 17 and that 5k were infected. I know it is woo, but the offials are lying to us, we need to get as much truth as we can and those living there are trying to tell us.

Regarding the contagiousness, and the number of sick and dying, what makes you think the number has not grown exponentially? Is that because you trust the numbers coming from the Chinese govt.? (If so, I got a bridge to sell ya...) Have you seen some of the videos coming out of China today? Hospitals look overwhelmed in the videos. Yeah, it's anecdotal, but the fact that the govt over there is freaking out to the point that they have put all those cities on lock-down, means this is some serious crap or at least they have reason to believe it is.
If a pandemic were underway even the Chinese could not hide it for long as news of the mass burials or burning or corpses could not stay hidden. The numbers would get too large too quickly. 25 today becomes 300 dying a few days from now becomes a few thousand dying a few days after that and then 10's of thousands per day and soon enough hundreds of thousands per day. My point is that the word pandemic is sometimes used to describe what are really epidemics. In a pandemic we'd see many millions dead and most societal systems overwhelmed.

I agree. What isn't being said is why China is quarantining millions of people. I have a feeling they "know" what the mortality rate of this virus is supposed to be.

That's amazing piece of history to be able to claim. Thanks for sharing.

I never said this was a pandemic. (Although it has the potential.) My main point to you was watch what the Chinese do (i.e. lock-down 20 million people) and not what they say. This is more serious than the numbers they are releasing.

There are a lot of cities being named as possibly being put on lockdown, but some of them are incorrect. We'll have an update on all the cities on lockdown in about 30-45 minutes.

Just the level of response alone that China is taking trlls me that this thing much larger and possibly deadlier than the reported numbers are showing. Take care folks

‘She’s a TIMEBOMB’ Chinese woman hides Coronavirus to enter France - and brags online

‘She’s a TIMEBOMB’ Chinese woman hides Coronavirus to enter France - and brags online

A CHINESE woman who knew she was infected with the deadly coronavirus has disguised her symptoms by deliberately taking antipyretics and successfully boarded a plane to France. She then bragged about her actions online in photographs with friends she met on arrival, according to Chinese media sources.

Users of Chinese social media site Weibo were shocked and angry at the reckless and potentially deadly actions of the woman. One said: “This kind of person is the most shameless”. Another posted: “She is now a time bomb.” As the deathtoll hits 17 the "infected" woman posted about her "escape" from Wuhan and how she was enjoying food in a French city.

She posted: "Finally, I can have a good meal, it feels like I hacve been starving for two days. In a city of global delicacies, of course we have to eat food with Michelin Stars. This was also more successful, with no bugs. Just before I left, I has a low fever and was coughing quite heavily, I ate lots of medivine, which lowered my fever. finally, my fever went down, and I was able to exit."

The medicine she has taken is ikely to have been an antipyretic, which lowers the bodies temperature when fever hits.

The "infected" woman explained in a post that unfortunately if her infection was diagnosed, she would become a “super-infected person”.

This news comes as many more cases of those infected with the virus have been revealed, including Wang Guangfa, a member of the expert group of the Chinese National Health and Medical Commission who had visited Wuhan earlier and stated that the epidemic was “controllable and preventable”, but he has been diagnosed with Wuhan pneumonia last night.

So far, 440 people have been infected. A total of 26 cases were reported in Guangdong and 14 cases were confirmed in Shenzhen.

China has placed infrared temperature measurements screening in airports, train stations, coach stations and terminals.

The news comes after a French citizen had been reported to have suffered respiratory problems and other virus symptoms after returning to France from a trip to Wuhan, the Chinese city in which coronavirus appears to have originated.

The symptoms had previously been suspected to be coronavirus.

Yet, French director general of health, Jérôme Salomon, confirmed that the patient had received tests for viral infection at the Institut Pasteur health clinic, and all had come back negative.
Mr Salomon told French public service media FranceInfo: “He is doing well, and has returned home.”

Canada girds for new coronavirus, 17 years after deadly SARS epidemic
Rod Nickel, Denise Paglinawan

January 23, 2020 / 2:47 PM / Updated 5 hours ago

WINNIPEG, Manitoba / TORONTO (Reuters) - The arrival of a new, sometimes deadly strain of coronavirus to just outside Canada’s borders has health officials determined not to repeat the country’s stumbling response to the SARS epidemic 17 years ago.

SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, killed 44 people in Canada, the only country outside Asia to report deaths from that virus in 2002-2003.

Government health officials say Canada is better prepared this time.

There have been no confirmed new coronavirus cases in Canada, but “five or six” are under investigation, Canadian Health Minister Patty Hajdu said.

Starting this week, Canada’s Public Health Agency added a screening question for visitors and began displaying messages in several airports urging travelers to report flu-like symptoms.

“I feel assured that the processes that we’ve put into place, that we’ve learned since the experience of SARS, are actually functioning just as they should,” Hajdu said on Thursday.

The Ontario government said doctors are now required to report suspected or confirmed cases of the new virus to local public health units.

At least 18 people have died from the new coronavirus following an outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan, and nearly 650 cases have been reported globally, 634 of them in China.

The first U.S. case was confirmed on Monday in Washington state, bordering Canada.

It is still too early in the outbreak to know how dangerous the virus is and how easily it spreads from person to person. But Canada erected its main defenses after learning the hard way that it was ill-prepared for SARS, a different strain of coronavirus.

“If there is a silver lining to (SARS), we are ready for this one,” said Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious diseases specialist at the University of Toronto and Toronto General Hospital. “I won’t bat an eye if this is imported into Canada. The world really is a much different place than it was in 2002.”

The SARS outbreak led to a rare travel warning for Toronto from the World Health Organization. As a result, tourists aborted trips and conventions were canceled, at a cost to Canada of C$1.5 billion ($1.14 billion) in gross domestic product, according to the Conference Board of Canada think tank.

Streets in some neighborhoods of Canada’s largest city were deserted and Asians faced a public “shunning,” recalls Tony Clement, Ontario’s health minister at the time.

Unlike during the SARS epidemic, if a patient shows up at a Canadian hospital now with flu-like symptoms after recent travel, they are isolated and given a mask to wear, Bogoch said. Doctors and nurses treating the patient are required to suit up in protective gowns, masks and gloves.

Systems are in place for handling samples from patients suspected of being infected and for communication with other health agencies.

MORE TO BE DONE

But preparations this month have been uneven in hospitals across Ontario, said Vicki McKenna, president of the Ontario Nurses’ Association.

Some hospitals have done recent fittings for nurse respirator masks, others have not. Some have posted signs in waiting rooms and begun additional patient screening, she said.

“(Nurses) are themselves a little bit uncertain what’s happening in their organizations. There is not consistent messaging and that’s a bit worrisome,” McKenna said.

Clement recalls receiving briefings from staff early in the SARS outbreak assuring him the situation was under control, before the spread accelerated.

Canada should avoid drawing the same hasty conclusion with this coronavirus, he said.

Airport screening is “better than nothing,” but people may display symptoms only days after infection, he said.

Health officials should be quick to restrict hospital visits and patient transfers if the situation worsens, Clement added.

It is critical that hospitals ensure all staff - including medical and cleaning workers - know how to properly don protective equipment, and address other precautionary concerns, said Gavin Macgregor-Skinner, director of training for the Chicago-based Global Biorisk Advisory Council.

Those include dedicating separate hospital rooms for staff to suit up and to remove safety gear, disposing of infected materials properly and ensuring that isolation rooms have negative air pressure, which prevents air from contaminating other areas, Macgregor-Skinner said. A dedicated phone line for recent travellers with flu-like symptoms should be set up, he added.

“A week ago, I wasn’t too worried about this one. But I am now,” he said.

You can derive a lot of information from pictures. The PPE being utilized by the health care workers in the various pictures are modified Level C protection (minus the PAPR's). This is the same level of protection utilized when dealing with Ebola patients. An example of the PPE utilized by the Nebraska Bio-containment unit who treated Ebola patients can be found in the following video...

At 555 confirmed cases with 17 fatalities... this virus has a mortality rate of 3%

In no way do we know what the mortality rate is at this point.

For example, using your data, how many of the 555 cases are also 'cleared' (i.e. recovered)?

Additionally, it's a reasonable assumption that the local authorities have not yet determined if there are people who have had the virus with only minor symptoms. There may be masses of people who have only minor symptoms, or there may be few, depending on the virulence and morbidity of this particular virus.

Basically, at this point we know squat other than a novel coronavirus has made an appearance, has killed a number (total unknown and unknowable) of people, and scared the crap out of the Chinese govt., to the point they are willing to quarrantine multiple cities (and all the knock-on effects associated thereby) in an effort to tamp down on it's spread.

IMHO, of course.

Day by day
Yes, things are getting real bad, people are dropping on the streets

This is perhaps the one thing that has me concerned the most (aside from rapid spread and the fact that the whole darn situation is a real-life nightmare).

What is causing them to drop in the street? Exhaustion, high fever, dehydration? Some of the people who collapse are clearly still alive (moving around a bit). However, some of them appear deceased, and from pics/videos appear to have lost blood - not trying to be graphic here or morbid, but if they're bleeding other than from injury caused by impact on the ground, there would seem to be a whole other component to this virus.

Is it a lung bleed due to excessive coughing, something else? I seem to recall that happening with the 1918 flu - certainly stories of people dropping dead in the street, but I think some bleeding also.

This whole scenario just seems to be much, much larger than it appears...if that makes sense. And very ominous.

The tipping point will come when the number of patients exceeds the limit of health care beds, equipment (especially respiratory), and available health care personnel to treat.

I have no expertise in this area but I have asked the same question to myself before and wondered if I could place a mask outside in the sun to let the UV light disinfect it without having to get it wet.
Your Taking a chance here. You don't know if you have anything on it to begin with or how successful your anti- contamination technique was unless you have some pretty expensive exotic detection equiptment in your basement. Just throw it away in a plastic bag and seal. One thing some haven't considered is CROSS contamination and how to remove a mask if it is indeed contaminated and how to contain it without spreading it on your hands and face. Wearing latex gloves, pull the mask straight out away from your face and nose. Carefully lift it over your head and off. Put in a plastic bag That has been opened before. Don't touch the outside of the bag. Pinch the left hand glove and remove pulling down so it is removed inside out. Put in bag. Insert fingers in right hand glove and remove inside out and put in bag also. Seal bag and dispose of properly. Burial might be good. If it gets this bad all your clothes and shoes are probably contaminated also and you should set up an area to undress, prior to entering the house. This is getting WAY too complicated. TB2K was started( I guess) as a preparation site to survive that particular event. You should have stored all the masks, food, water, etc. for an extended period and should have it on hand already. Quarantine yourself as much as possible. This sounds impractical if you have to get to work, shop, etc. We don't have that problem and we can drop out for an extended period of time. Besides someone has to survive to tell the story of what happened! Best!

That really isn't appropriate doffing of contaminated PPE.

Here is the UN story on WHO response from today

The head of the UN health agency, WHO (World Health Organization), declared on Thursday that the respiratory disease Novel Coronavirus, is not yet an official Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), but warned that is an emergency in China.
