Chinese restaurants in Australia and elsewhere have been suffering for nearly two months, with many reporting a drop in business due to public fears over the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Now, a social media campaign in Australia is urging communities to rally around their local Chinese restaurant, as authorities warn against the danger of misinformation and racialized stigma.

The campaign, launched this week by Australian political activist group GetUp!, encourages people to show their support by spreading the hashtag #IWillEatWithYou and pledging to support struggling Chinese businesses.

Filipino domestic worker is Hong Kong's 61st coronavirus patient
From journalist Alexandra Lin in Hong Kong

Hong Kong now has 61 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus, according to the city's health department.

The latest patient is a 32-year-old woman from the Philippines who works in Hong Kong as a domestic helper, Dr. Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Center for Health Protection said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Her employer was the 52nd person to become infected with the virus in the city, Chaung added.
The woman started to have a cough and fever on February 2 but got better after self-medicating and didn't go to the doctor, Chaung said.

Her employer tested positive on Thursday, February 13. The domestic helper first tested negative, but remained in hospital for monitoring. She tested positive on Monday.

Chaung warned initial tests may not pick up enough of the virus, causing people to test negative even when infected. This is why a patient is tested again if their condition deteriorates or they have had close contact with confirmed cases.

Health officials are contacting about a dozen friends of the 61st case who gathered with her outside City Hall on February 9.

Hong Kong is home to 385,000 foreign domestic workers, from countries including the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. They are the economic backbone of the city, enabling more mothers to work and generating $12.6 billion to Hong Kong's economy each year, according to one report.

Quarantine is nearly over for some Americans evacuated from Wuhan
From CNN's Ben Tinker and Hollie Silverman

US citizens who arrived at the Marine Corps Air Station in Southern California earlier this month in the first evacuation flights from Wuhan -- the epicenter of the outbreak -- are nearing the end of their quarantine.

The US State Department flights from Wuhan landed at MCAS Miramar in San Diego County, on February 5 and February 7.

About 160 people are expected to be released Tuesday morning, Capt. Matthew Gregory, MCAS Miramar's director of communication, confirmed to CNN Monday night. Another group is expected to be released on Thursday. Gregory did not have details on Thursday's release.

There have been two confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus among the group. The first and second patients arrived on different planes and were housed in separate facilities, CDC officials said.

As Americans are returning to the US on government-chartered evacuation flights, commercial airlines are keeping tabs on passengers leaving the country who may have been exposed to people infected with the virus.

Thirty doctors in Brighton are currently in isolation after coming into contact with a GP who tested positive for coronavirus, the Argus reported.

A frontline clinician told the local paper: “There are 30 doctors in isolation after coming into contact with a GP who tested positive for coronavirus at the CCG meeting. Public Health England told them to self-isolate. This is a risk.

“There would have been a day or two in between them coming into contact with the GP with coronavirus and being traced and told to self-isolate.”

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove CCG said there have been no new cases in the city for more than a week. He added: “All doctors and other primary care health workers in Brighton and Hove who were advised to “self isolate” as a precaution are expected to be returning to work this week.”

The two-week quarantine of the Diamond Princess cruise ship ends on Wednesday, with thousands of passengers and crew set to disembark over the next several days in the port of Yokohama, near Tokyo.

But a number of scientists told the Associated Press that the ship could have served as an incubator for Covid-19 instead of a quarantine facility that was meant to prevent the worsening of the outbreak.

“I suspect people were not as isolated from other people as we would have thought,” said Dr Paul Hunter, a professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia, in England.

“Obviously the quarantine hasn’t worked, and this ship has now become a source of infection,” said Dr Nathalie MacDermott, an outbreak expert at King’s College London.

She said the exact mechanism of the virus’s spread was unknown.

“We need to understand how the quarantine measures onboard were implemented, what the air filtration onboard is like, how the cabins are connected and how waste products are disposed of,” MacDermott added.

The narrative has shifted.

===

.
At the risk of sounding “woo” one has to wonder *why* the sudden shift in narrative.

Also at the risk of sounding extremely woo...I had the passing thought of I wonder if they kept folks on the diamond princess as an experiment to determine the nature of this virus, since could not trust the Chinese flow of information...bc we all agree quarantine on a cruise ship is a lousy idea...what if it was actually the point??? I so hope I’m being extremely paranoid about this....but we *are* learning a lot from the diamond princess-asymptotic positives, time of spread etc

David Abel, from Oxfordshire, announced on Facebook that he and Sally had tested positive for the new virus. In a later post, however, he said he doubted his diagnosis.

“Frankly I think this is a setup! We are NOT being taken to a hospital but a hostel. That’s where partners are sent waiting out their quarantine,” he wrote. “No phone, no wifi and no medical facilities. I really am smelling a very big rat here! Waiting for the transfer now.”

Asked in the comments below one of his posts whether he was sure the test was positive, he replied: “I doubt it was positive. If it was, we would be in hospital.”

snip from Guardian story ^^^^

===

It's been related the passengers were not being informed adequately IRT their situation. It is highly likely Japan has run into a capacity problem, hence moving probable patients to hostels.

Profound. Once again a stellar pair of guests. A deep dive into the realities behind the Chinese economy and Communist party. According to them 65% of Chinese doctors have no more than a bachelor's degree if that much, nighttime emissions of light shows factories really are not returning to work and they're saying China will be lucky if 1st quarter GDP is even at 0%.

After 2 of these shows, I'm convinced that this Bannon fellow truly knows who the experts are on various subjects worldwide.

Fox and friends first reported this morning that Corona is 20X more deadly than the regular flu. First time I have heard them come out and say it on MSM.
so, if we have 10,000 deaths per year from the flu in the US, then we could expect 200,000 deaths per year from coronavirus.
the US has 320,000 people. China has 1,400,000,000 people. 320 X 5 = 1,600,000,000
so China has about 5 times the number of people.
So they would expect about a million deaths per year.
It has been 2 months so they likely have about 150,000 dead, which is about 10X what has been reported.
Right. Got it. Multiply everything by 10.

No woo.

“They” have not been withholding information, but metering it out expertly, for maximum effect upon impact.

Herd, prepare to be stampeded.

If the virus was not manufactured to an end, the intent of the US is making FULL USE of this “crisis” to ends that may well make Chicoms sit up, take notes, and marvel in awe.

It's like the 'Alien' franchise: The evacuation ship always carries the monster.

Unfortunately, in this instance, the monster is an invisible, inaudible yet highly infectious virus. And instead of the Nostromo, we have two chartered Boeing 747s.

According to the New York Post, 14 Americans among the more than 300 US citizen passengers being evacuated from the cruise ship 'Diamond Princess' after nearly two weeks of quarantine have tested positive for the virus. Officials said they didn't learn of the positive tests until the flight was about to take off.

Ahead of the flight, the State Department said that 40 Americans who had tested positive wouldn't be eligible for the evacuation flight, and would instead be entrusted to Japanese authorities. Of course, all of the Americans who traveled on the evacuation flights had to agree to a two week quarantine after returning to the US.

I think they're trying for minimal effect. The epidemic is like a runaway train. The PTB have been playing catch-up just getting themselves up to speed. Until they saw the gravity, they were calming the herd. Now they see it's coming fast, so they need to get the herd moving so the herd is ready for the runaway train when it gets here. If they don't get the herd moving, the train will hit us at full speed while we're standing still. So the herd has to be accelerated to match the speed of the train when it gets here, and it's getting here way faster than the government thought it would as recently as a month ago.

Moody’s cuts its 2020 growth forecast for #China from 5.8% to 5.2% due to lower import demand brought on by the #coronavirus outbreak. More on the virus impact on business on @CNBCWEX!

This is a joke. There’s no way that China is still going to see economic growth this year. This virus is going to have long-lasting consequences. COVID-19 would have to end abruptly in March for there to be any positive numbers. And that is highly unlikely. Steve Brannon discussed this in the latest episode of the War Room Pandemic.

Just a boots on the ground from yesterday: I went in for my annual in the afternoon, and their waiting room was empty. Masks, tissues and hand sanitizer at the door with a notice to use 'em if you were coughing . The usual questions at registration about overseas travel and contact with persons of overseas travel. I think my doc was one of two in the place along with the two nurses and the techs. This is a good sized neighborhood clinic in the larger city near me, and usually has 6-7 Docs manning the joint.

In talking with the nurse, apparently in the am, the place was full of sick kids coughing and gacking with the flu, but things had calmed down. My Doc was yawning through our visit because he said he'd been up since 4:00am with his own flu-infested kids. But really, nothing unusual for a bad flu season February.

Doctors in Hubei China warns: Wuhan novel coronavirus causes sudden heart attack during 2nd infection. As the antibodies against virus do not work during 2nd infection, so infection can cause heart failure and further sudden death of people.
I am starting to suspect (and I think Nightwolf is going to try checking the professional sites) that what we have here is as much a translation issue as a health issue.

I think it is much more likely that the "reinfection" is really a "phase two" of the disease, rather than "catching" it a second time - while anything is possible, a lot of killer diseases (or diseases the kill some but not others) have this sort of a second phase to them.

Others, like Malaria, once they infect you, you usually have a low-grade case for life.

Nightwolf said early on that one of the problems both China and places like Ireland are likely to have, is an explosion of active TB cases among the elderly, because huge numbers of older people in China (and modern Ireland) caught TB as children and are "cured" but the disease can come roaring back if the immune system is compromised.

Even the US is not immune to this - I was exposed to active TB in the wake of the 1989 Earthquake (one person had it) and while I didn't get a full-blown case, the skin test no longer works on me and I have to have chest x-rays whenever my lungs get iffy.

I've been told it is something to watch out for in the normal course of aging, and there are millions of people just like me and the only reason I KNOW about my exposure was the wonderful work of the San Francisco County Health Department who tracked us all down (after a major Earthquake) and got every contact of the affected person tested.

If you think that is likely to happen in the middle of a pandemic outbreak, well, I'd say the chances of that happening in 2020 San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle or New York are very low. Especially like the one I was exposed to that included an outbreak among the homeless.

Besides, the Health Authorities will be way to busy dealing with secondary outbreaks and/or re-infections from the main virus to worry about TB until things calm down a bit and they have to.

Coronavirus up to 20 times more likely than Sars to bind to human cells, study suggests
Gigi Choy
Published: 2:36pm, 18 Feb, 2020 | Updated: 2:36pm, 18 Feb, 2020

  • New strain appears to be more readily transmitted from human to human than Sars, Texas researchers find
  • Further studies needed to explore human host cells’ role in spread between people, the report says
The deadly new coronavirus is up to 20 times more likely to bind to human cell receptors and cause infection than severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars), a new study by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin has found.

The novel coronavirus and Sars share the same functional host-cell receptor, called angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2).

The report, published on the website bioRxiv on Saturday, said the new coronavirus had around 10 to 20-fold higher affinity – the degree to which a substance tends to combine with another – for human ACE2 compared with Sars.

But the researchers added that further studies were needed to explore the human host-cell receptor’s role in helping the new virus to spread from person to person.

“Compared with SARS-CoV, 2019-nCoV appears to be more readily transmitted from human to human,” the report of the study said. “The high affinity of 2019-nCoV S for human ACE2 may contribute to the apparent ease with which 2019-nCoV can spread from human to human.”

The disease caused by the new coronavirus, which the World Health Organisation (WHO) has named Covid-19, has killed more than 1,800 people and infected over 70,000 worldwide.

The number of Covid-19 deaths is more than double the global figure of 813 attributed by the WHO to the Sars epidemic of 2002-03.

The new study found that although the novel coronavirus’ receptor-binding domain (RBD) had a relatively similar structure to that of Sars, it did not have appreciable binding to three published Sars RBD-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), which are copies of one type of antibody used to neutralise pathogens.

The researchers said this suggested antibody cross-reactivity – the extent to which different antigens appear similar to the immune system – may be limited between the two virus RBDs, meaning Sars-directed mAbs will not necessarily work against the new virus.

Instead, they identified the spike protein of coronaviruses, which is essential to gain entry into host cells during the infection process, as the most important target for vaccines, therapeutic antibodies and diagnostics.

“Due to the indispensable function of the [spike] protein it represents a vulnerable target for antibody-mediated neutralisation,” the report said. “Knowing the atomic-level structure of the spike will support precision vaccine design and discovery of antivirals, facilitating medical countermeasure development.”

The WHO has declared the outbreak a global public health emergency, making it the sixth incident to date to warrant that designation.

There are currently no specific treatments for the novel coronavirus but the WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said last week that the first vaccine may be available in 18 months.

So therein lies the explanation why it's spreading so rapidly...

China virus threatens global antibiotics supply: European business group
February 17, 2020 / 10:11 PM / Updated 6 hours ago

BEIJING (Reuters) - The world could face a shortage of antibiotics if the pharmaceutical industry’s supply problems posed by the coronavirus outbreak in China cannot soon be resolved, the head of a European business group in China warned on Tuesday.

EU Chamber of Commerce President Joerg Wuttke told a roundtable in Beijing that the synchronization of supplies in China was being hampered by the outbreak, also highlighting problems in the car industry, while inventories were surging.

He also noted that companies were running out of packaging material and faced challenges with regulatory uncertainties.

Oregon man returns to U.S. after leaving Cambodia cruise docked for COVID-19

The man said his cruise was docked and a passenger tested positive for COVID-19, or coronavirus. He left the secure watch of his hotel to return to the PNW.

Author: KING 5 Staff
Published: 6:50 PM PST February 17, 2020
Updated: 6:50 PM PST February 17, 2020

SEATTLE — An Oregon man is back on U.S. soil after the cruise ship he was on was turned away from several countries over fears surrounding COVID-19, formerly known as the coronavirus.

Professional comedian Frank King was set to perform on a Holland-America Westerdam cruise. That cruise left Hong Kong and was ultimately turned away from four countries before finding refuge in Cambodia.

“It’s kind of like the Hotel California... I’m not going to check out but I am leaving,” King said.
When the cruise docked in Cambodia, an American tested positive for COVID-19.

“And then when she tested positive, nobody is leaving the hotel. It wasn’t like an armed camp, but they were watching you. If you walked out with your backpack beside you, that’s fine. If you did like I did and you drag your luggage, they tried to stop you," King said.

King walked out of the hotel and ended up booking a flight from Cambodia to Bangkok. From there, he flew to Dubai and then ultimately landed in Seattle.

He said the U.S. Customs & Border Patrol were expecting him.

“They knew. They had my name on the list and they knew. They go ‘are you Mr. King? Were you on the Westerdam?' I said yes. I thought “oh man, I’m going to Guantanamo.’ But because I hadn’t been on mainland China and I’d been outside the incubation period and hadn’t been in close contact with anyone with the flu, they said you are free to go,” King said.
It took two hours for King to clear customs.

King plans on renting a car and drive from Seattle to his home in Eugene, Oregon.

In a statement, Holland America said it’s still working with the Cambodian health ministry and are working to clear passengers once they test negative.

They anticipate this will take several more days.

I understand the man leaving, but why or why didn't the border patrol (who he alerted) take him to a mandatory quarantine station! I might also have tried to escape (heck Nightwolf and I were delighted to get on a plane back to Ireland when Bird Flu hit New York) but I would have expected no less than 14 days mandatory on a military base if we had flown back to the US/Ireland under the current conditions in Asia (especially if we had been on an infected ship!).

If this does go epidemic full-on in North America, situations like this are going to be why; the classic combination of both over reactions in some situations and total lack of proper reaction/normalcy bias in others.

This one is a perfect example of that other thread on normalcy bias and why it can kill (or get others killed).

Irish people living in China offered money to make videos to promote 'business as usual' image of stricken Wuhan

It comes as it emerged that Irish people were among the passengers on a second cruise ship stricken by the coronavirus

Irish people living in China are being offered money to make videos to allay fears about Wuhan, the city at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak.

A message online encourage foreign nationals in China to express their blessing to Wuhan in the videos, saying that the situation is "completely under control " and the country just has a "cold".

The message, which offers foreigners living in China €10 for making the video, suggests a general script where they would say their lives are "in great order".

"If they go to the supermarket there are abundant materials and you can buy everything," according to the script.

The message is appearing on jobs websites and also urges people to say: "If you cook at home, you can eat well."

The video would make no mention of the fact that Wuhan has been in lockdown for weeks, people are rarely venturing outside their homes and there are food shortages in supermarkets.

It comes as it emerged this morning that Irish people were among the passengers on a second cruise ship stricken by the coronavirus.

The Westerdam luxury ship was allowed to dock in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, on Saturday and passengers were allowed disembark after one of them tested positive for the virus.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney said Irish people were on the ship and foreign affairs officials are working to repatriate them.

"There is a second cruise ship off Cambodia, we're working with Irish nationals on both of those ships to make sure they're safe. And if they're in quarantine to make sure those conditions are safe," Mr Coveney said.

Meanwhile, two Irish people on the coronavirus-stricken cruise ship Diamond Princess, which is in quarantine off the coast of Japan, may be offered seats on a rescue flight which could bring them to the UK.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said: "We are aware of the developing situation and are liaising closely with other like-minded countries regarding the consular needs of our citizens."

However, if it is arranged and the Irish couple accept the transport they are likely to have to endure another two weeks isolation in the UK, or another country, before they are allowed to return home to Ireland.

There were reports yesterday that a hotel near Heathrow airport has been block booked by England's Department of Health with a view to using it as a reported yesterday to be in discussions with the UK government to deploy a Virgin Atlantic plan for repatriation.

No case of the virus has been diagnosed in Ireland.

However, scores of people have been tested for it as a precaution.

Depending on which factors you consider credible, it may be a lot higher than that.

I've seen CFR intepreted as between 1 - 5%, and total world population infected projected at up to 60%.

1% CFR @ 40% of world population infected would be about 7.7 billion * .4 * .01, or 30,800,000.

I leave the worst case projection to your calculator or imagination.

He said that only about 30% of their product is sourced from China and that they will simply use other foreign suppliers to obtain those products. Easy peasy I guess? As normal, every retailer or manufacturer/supplier will look for other sources for either finished goods or raw materials, but promise that they only intend to do so on somebody else's dime. Likely to place will be on fire before they do anything proactively and then they will only call a meeting to address the smoke.

Another boots on the ground report, and I'm sure Sherree will add more.

Our normal shopping day was yesterday (17th) all the shelves were full, at our local Walmart. The one we were most worried about was the dog's treats which are all made in China. I told Frisco before we left that he might have to go on half rations, before we left, and he snarled his nose at me. So am thankful that not only did they have his treats, but the shelves were full.

That is until we went through like a whirlwind and cleaned them out. LOL Little boy will be happy for a while.

Which tells you exactly who rules the roost.

However on another note: Over at zerohedge Walmart is reporting slower SALES than expected (not inventory).
