Misc/Chat Pics of my small suburban homestead & garden (no thumbs)

Just a small unassuming house in suburbia. The lot is only 60 x 160 (but a lot of folks can do a lot with even less) so I considered it a challenge to see what I could do with what I had...

Fancy house I live in a shack.

Yeah, well, its almost heaven down there Publius. Every once in a while I get the privilege of visiting the Wild & Wonderful.

If you do a 180 from that last pic you will look right along my fence line and see my grapevines along with a bunch of other misc stuff...

As you approach the rear of the property- you can see my newest garden area. Notice the quince tree and the cherry tree on the left. Unfortunately I lost a chestnut tree this winter.

A 'maker', not a 'taker'!
I'd say your username is quite appropriate. You have been quite imaginative and economic in the usage of space. I can see you are a serious homesteader/prepper. If only everyone could make such good use of their land, we could just about all be independent.

Thanks for sharing.

Now if you walk around to the other side of the garage you can see my rappinni patch that also has various mints- beans- rhubarb and a few other herbs...

AWESOME!!! I'm amazed you can have chickens with neighbors so close by. Where I live its outlawed by city gov't. Without giving away your privacy, what part of the country do you live in? Do you have winter where you are? Much rain? Wide range in temperatures? Your house looks so well cared for and much loved. Thank you!!!

Well Im also amazed at the city allowing me the chickens ( I called them twice just to be sure) The only paramaters they gave me were;
1. No roosters
2. Cant sell the eggs (?) & they
3. Need to be enclosed by a fence

After I put this thing together (I had talked w/ the neighbors first) I realize that I was only about 5 feet from the neighbors prop line (Im surprised that there wasnt at least some set-back rule) but he is an old chicken guy from PA and rarely seems to be out unless his grandchildren come over. And the grandkids love those chickens.

Im in NE Ohio (best climate in the nation- plenty of rain never too hot never too cold and all 4 seasons).

Thanks for the compliments on the house. It really is a dream house; I bought it from the original owner when he was on his deathbed. He was 100 and the house was built in 1929. He never had kids so only 2 people lived in it.

I bought if for a song- as it was pretty run down cosmetically. Paid cash 17 years ago at the tender age of 29. As nice as the outside is- the interior is really even nicer. This will be a hard place to leave but I really do want a small farm when my daughter graduates from HS.

Well done, imaginative! That's beautiful! Amazing that you managed to fit all that in such a small area.

Looks real homey and comfortable. Thanks for sharing.

Wish we could grow rhubarb here - yours looks great. Doesn't work in this hot climate unfortunately!!

You have a beautiful house and yard and garden. I can only imagine how hard it would be to leave that.

Great!
I also noticed your neatly stacked wood! Keep going!

Same here, saw that immediately. Nice use of space, no doubt about it.

Same as you, I love this area of the country near Lake Erie, you described it accurately.

We also have a small yard and have utilized every nook and cranny of it. Everyone who visits comments on that very thing. Also, as you mentioned, our inside is even nicer...;)

Beautiful and well-maintained plants and structures. The only thing I would recommend is maybe a circular garden wall around the tree in the front yard and then planted with shade-loving hostas. I'm a garden wall block nut and have used them extensively. Great job!

400 bean plants(I have piles of beans in the kitchen)
24 zucchini plants(& harvesting daily)
24 cucumber plants (17 cukes on my windowsill right now)
50 or 60 different pepper plants
a smattering of peas- rhubarb- various herbs-eggplant
200 feet of lettuce/spinach/escarole
6 egg plants (Buff Orphington variety)

Dude- Im always in Buffalo. We have the crazy Italian side up there and everyone of them is an urban farmer and 'every nook and cranny' sums up their utilization also .

Absolutely beautiful, such a good use of space. And right in town, it can be done. The house looks wonderful too. And how nice to see something besides the depressing news. Thanks for posting.

Beautiful home and garden. Love your chickens too. Everything looks lush and well maintained. I do hope you get your dream farm someday. You'd love having tons of land to expand on. :)

Changed, I loved the video. Thanks for posting that.

Thanks.

I thought long and hard before starting & the block retaining walls really seemed to be the best use of space that I had. All of the dirt is leaf humus and various organic compostings- extremely rich soil. In addition to the nutrients- it drains well and the raised beds allow me to plant way earlier than a ground based garden would. This year was the first year I didnt plant in April (and I can count on 1 hand the number of plants Ive lost to frost in the past 17 years.

The garden that is around the chicken coop came within an inch of getting surrounded by barnstone and backfilled with maybe 30 yards of compost. It was just too cold & wet this spring to move those heavy stones around...maybe next year.

How are chickens doing Loon? Yours must be about 13 weeks old now? Those pics were taken a week ago and this week I think the pullets are 15 weeks. I put offers on several 5 acre properties this year hoping to get a deal but nothing worked out. A good friend of mine has a 88 ac farm (thats my SHTF bug-out spot if I must leave here) and yeah- that would just be incredible to manage that much land.

Chicks are doing great. They are so cute. When I'm mowing they all hang out close to the edge hoping grass will fly into their run to eat. I've been giving them some of my broccoli too. They love the stuff. I let them have our leftover worms after fishing. I will post some pics too. I can't wait till we get eggs. We'll have to post pics of our first eggs OK? I'm figuring around September.

NICE slice of paradise you have there Loon.

Yep- Im figuring on early September. Last week my Mom (my parents live next door) put an egg in the nesting box for me to find as a joke. About flipped me out for a second!

Good looking stuff, great effort!

Do you bring your figs inside during the cold?

Thanks Wowser

I have a photo studio that I convert one room to a greenhouse (it has a south facing wall that is all glass) in the winter. Plants and fig trees go there.

I really want a greenhouse. If this cold weather keeps up it may be the only way I'll be able to raise tomatoes and peppers. We're just not getting the heat they need. Usually by now we're eating red tomatoes. I'll have to look at some inexpensive options for putting up some kind of decent greenhouse. We have so much wind here by the lake it will have to be strong.
