HA! I'm drinking coffee from yesterday, too, but I reheated it in the microwave.

It's 48 and between rain showers right now.

Off for a walk and a brief stop at one of the dollar stores for a new box grater or reasonable facsimile. I was trying to shred potatoes yesterday and realized how smooth my grater had become. I think I got it for $1 ten years ago at a garage sale, so it has served its time.

Garden plan... I'm going to use steel drums as raised beds/fence on the roadside. My debate at the moment is whether I am going to cut them in half or not.

I have to for the space roughly 20 feet up to the stop sign. And on the other side. I may stair step them up to full height. I'm still debating.

This week is all about firewood. Hubby has to help on this one - it's gonna be physical and more than I can do alone.

The plan is to empty the current wood shed and make repairs. Install a gutter to harvest rainfall from the roof (it's about 12' x 6'). Conceal a 275gal IBC tank for the rain water, inside the shed. Add doors to keep varmints out. Install 2 pretty lights to the shed to brighten a dark corner of the yard and make it easier to retrieve wood. Then of course, we have to load it up with a resupply of new wood. Hopefully, I can pay the guy who delivers the wood to bring his 2 sons and pack the shed for me. Not sure how much it will hold with the IBC tank taking up space but hopefully I can still get in 2 cords.

The plan is to get this done now, while wood is cheap - after all the recent storms, so it can dry out for next winter.

Some of what I washed today wash sheets that I've been holding to make tiered skirts. I love the colors. But my brain finally processed through why I hadn't used them yet.

They are all light colors and I won't where light colors as bottoms until I lose a lot of weight. So I'm going to use them to make some comfy peasant blouse style shirts. Those I will wear. And I can experiment with styles. I'm thinking a princess cut, semi shaped bodice with a gathered neckline and short sleeves. I've so been seeing a lot of ideas for clothing that has different ties and can be resized as you grow/shrink.

We took a break from the gardens and took a drive out to our beautiful azalea park. We wanted to see the dogwoods and they didn't disappoint!
We took a break because we've become aware of a slab leak. I noticed our floor, which has vinyl flooring was warm and now it's very warm. So we'll make a call tomorrow for a leak specialist. Sigh. Oh well. Since we will have to remove the flooring we will just do the kitchen as well. Not a complete remodel but a freshen up.
I'm going to start packing up the room with the pantry and cleaning up. The roof adjuster comes on Tuesday. Looks like a "fun" expensive week ahead.
Prayers for everyone!

This week will be busy. I'm moving berry bushes, digging in more fruit trees, adding more fencing, finishing building two new chicken coops and painting them and a mini barn. I also have wood to stack.

I want to finish cleaning out one of our houses this week, so I can get flooring replaced and ready for it's new resident.

I hope you all have a wonderful, safe week! :)

Rain is moving in tonight all the way through Thursday, so not much will be done outside all week. Flood watches may go up for us soon. A lot of reading and watching dvd's will be done while just doing light chores inside all week. Nothing really is planned, except for a doctor's appt. Wednesday. Cary needs some bloodwork done that day.

We won't be able to see the eclipse here at all because of all the clouds and rain. I don't think anything major will happen because of it, but I do have a bit of uneasiness about it. Don't know why, though. Everyone at our bible study this morning wishes that Monday was over, already.

Hubby is busy prepping the garden and setting up mobile dimensional saw. I have been deep cleaning tge pantry and found a couple of cases of forgotten apple sauce. Dated 2019. All were very discolored and after opening one I decided it was too degraded to eat. So I am emptying them and washing them out. The contents go into the compost. The inside of the lids were funky and the apple sauces smelled off as well. I need to get a better handle on rotating food for sure. Nice and sunny today.

We went to one of the towns around here after church. We've eaten at Johnny's pizza a few times and DH likes it so we ate there. They do have a reasonable salad bar, I call it reasonable when they have fresh spinach. And they had a tasty Rasberry Vigenerat dressing so I was good on Salad. And I did have a couple pieces of pizza.

We went to Walmart after lunch. DH has been complaining about his shoes hurting his feet and he didn't like the expensive arch support inserts that I offered him, so I got him some gel insoles, he seemed pleased. I do what I can to keep him comfortable, he is very good to me in many many ways. I bought another box of the frozen beef patties and a package of mild smoked sausage. Since I bought groceries and paid more on my cc I didn't as much extra money to add to my cash stash and I had wanted, but I did add to it. Trying to save where and when I can.

All this talk about sewing has almost given me the bug. I doubt I'll actually go that far but I do have one of my good pairs of knee length short has a rip next to the seam in the back. Its almost like I either spilled something caustic on it or it rotted. I've got some iron on patches that I may use to repair the problem. I wear these kinds of shorts through out the year except for the coldest days.

I'm not hard on clothes, but today's fabrics are often thin, plus many garments just aren't sewn that well. I've got several items in my mending basket, including a pair of pants with a ripped hem.

It's piling up because I haven't been watching TV lately. That's when I usually do my sewing.

I expected to be wiped today. And I am. But not to the degree that has been happening. I didn't get more outside work done but I have been finishing off laundry. And sharpening scissors. Amd lots of little things that need doing.

Which is worlds better than sitting and playing backgammon for hours because that is all the brain and body could do.

Back to work for me today after a week of spring break. During the week off, youngest son and I flew to NM to visit oldest son and daughter in law. We had a wonderful visit, and it helped to soothe my momma heart. I sure do hate flying though.

Hubby has been going full force with his garden, greenhouse, etc.

I continue to prep “slow and steady”. I replace items as I go and go from there.
Some recent thrift finds that I will consider “preps” (helps to justify lol) are fabric napkins (4/$1), a huge fabric tablecloth ($1), new pair of pajamas (needed).
Other than that, we are actually going to eat down our pantry a bit as we work to create a rotating meal menu.

My focus needs to be getting in better shape. I have put on 30 pounds over the past two years, and I need to get walking again. That is the most important prep I could do for myself. That is my current goal.

Have a great day everyone. I pray it is uneventful.

After church yesterday we stopped to get a pizza at the food truck on our way home. I was afraid it would be crowded, but we were the only customers there. No eclipse heavy traffic so far. Actually, there are fewer people out than normal. We are still staying home today.

I got my garden tilled. I still need to hoe up close to the plants. I might work on that today. We are expecting a lot of rain beginning tomorrow. We really need it. Hubby mowed some on Saturday and it was dusty.

I have already seen 4 snakes this year. The one in my garden was a large copperhead. I think I only saw 4 all last summer. I don't want them around. We will really need to stay ahead of the yard work this year. I need to weed eat around the flower beds. I am already jumpy about snakes whether there is one or not.

Hubby has been helping a couple of our friends with updating their pressure canners. New gauges and adding jiggers and weights to the ones without. One friend was given a barely used canner, but it only had the 15# weight and the gauge was not all there. It's in good shape now. We picked up a canner from another friend at church yesterday. He will have it ready next time we go to town. If you need canner parts, Red Hill General Store out of Virginia is awesome. They carry parts for all the brands he has repaired and upgraded. The lady he talked to on Friday really knew her canners, and was very helpful figuring out which weight one of the canners needed. The parts arrived quickly too.

We plan to look for the lost well some more. Hubby bought some brass rods to use. We hope we can find it like finding a spot for a new well. It was lined with clay tiles, but may have caved in or something. We aren't ready to give up just yet.

We will be outside during the eclipse. We will see over 3 minutes of darkness. I want to take a couple of shadow pictures. I am probably going to be working on my flower beds while I am out. I can't just sit in a chair and watch from the beginning to end. Hopefully, it is uneventful, and just a wonderful experience.

Have a blessed week and be safe

Today started with rain is predicted to rain all day. Boss was messaging me before it was even 7am.

Pure stubbornness kicked in. I grabbed the umbrella and the walking stick and got my walk in. It felt good. The muscles are starting to remember how they are supposed to move and that they are not supposed to be super tight. And the rain was good. I miss having a covered porch.

Laughed at myself when I got home. I misplaced my keys almost immediately. I finally ended up using the security camera recordings to figure out where I put them. Not so much put them. I dropped them when I laid down the walking stick. Sure enough found them when I looked.

Internet is being laggy today. That's going to make for a long day. And since it is raining, I guess I'm working on the priming of the steel raised bed garden panels. And I'm debating buying a paint sprayer for handling the barrels and future raised beds.

It's raining here this morning. Forecast expects us to get up to 6 inches of rain, before it's all over with through Thursday. We might get storms in with some of the rain through that time period. At least, it's warm all week, upper 60's and mid 70's.

I'm doing more laundry. Last load from the big pile up. I moved all my houseplants out to the front porch, yesterday afternoon. I'm not expecting any more really cold weather for us. I need to repot some of them, but that will wait a bit longer. I need new larger flowerpots, first. Those aren't in the budget right now. Restocking my pantry is more important.

We'll be watching the eclipse on tv if there is any coverage of it live. We're watching FOX Live right now in case something major starts happening, before, during, or after, LOL. Ya never know, right?

It is beautiful out here. Unfortunately, I have to work (online seminar from home, thankfully). But during the 'stretch breaks' I can step outside for a minute or two. And the speaker is both wordy and ignorant of a lot of the aspects attached to what she is teaching.

Heading into work in a few minutes. The NASA channel will be streamed in the break room if I can get that working.

Preps so far:
- gas topped off
- laundry and housework completed
- dinner made (meatloaf, potatoes, peas that just need to be reheated)
- groceries topped off
- stuff for work (work-arounds) printed off -- in case the Internet goes down
- laptop / phone recharged
- phone batteries recharged
- water jugs checked (several more filled)

Still need to do: get more cash and several odds and ends from Menard's -- no biggie if neither happens.

Onward!

Meemur, you sound like us this morning! I've got all laundry done, house cleaned, vehicles gassed up, phones charged, and all supper needs is to go in the oven, but contingency plans if the power goes out. I've already got it all prepped and, in the fridge, ready to go. We always have cash on hand and plenty of water stored. Plus, I made a dozen cupcakes and have those frosted.

I'm praying that nothing happens.

Not doing anything specific, although I might do some laundry and the kitchen always needs help.

We were predicted to have rain the last two days and nothing, yet. Its sure looks and feels like rain. I agree the cold weather has faded. It was 81 by my bed last night. A couple of small fans make all the difference, one is USB powdered and its a great little fan.

We have to go to the VA tomorrow, my every three month visit. They check me for drugs since they give me a few pain pills a month, No issues, although I have had a couple of ear aches lately. If I lay down on my ear for a little while it goes from intense pain to no pain at all. Its a blessing to know to do that. Ear pain is from hell.

I'm not going to work on my next grocery list until after my next check, that grocery list makes me anxious. I don't need anything, but there are some things that I want to count the cans so I have a better idea of what I have.

I'm eating cottage cheese again and I put either mandarin oranges or pineapple in it, can't really eat it plain. I have a decent supply of the mandarin oranges, but have not replaced very many of them. I had 8 cases of them without sugar. They have really gone up in price.

I know my mid-month grocery bill is already going to be another big bill. The trip should refill all the holes in my pantry, though. After it, my pantry will be fully restocked, then I can go back to normal groceries and just replacing what I use. I've already got a long list, but it shouldn't get much longer, before I go, which is planned for Thursday of next week.

We eat fresh fruit, but it just doesn't last, before my next grocery run. I'm thinking of adding some cans of fruit to the pantry. We both like mandarin oranges, peaches, and pears with no sugar added. I think those will be a good addition.

I have messed up and pretty much let myself run out of clothes. It is really hard for me to find anything that fits, and I hate to shop. Local stores have never had much of a selection, and since Covid, it's worse. I finally gave up and ordered a pair of riding boots online. They just got here, and they are hideous! Nowhere near the color they showed in the online photo, and they are too big! which never happens. I think I'm going to keep them anyway, I can wear them with 2 pairs of socks and if I don't like them I won't worry about scuffing them as much. The boots I really wanted were $350! I think people have lost their minds. The ones I got were on close out for $77 --- they're so horrid no one would buy them.
It's trying to rain so I doubt we will see any of the eclipse. I've got a stack of books to read if the power goes out. Going to try and finish the ebook I'm reading, and then I'll switch to hard backs.
Really hoping that nothing bad happens today...

I first ordered online from this company before COVID. I had found one pair of the pants in a store and liked them. Nowadays, quality is lesser but not lesser enough for me to completely stop at the moment. I had 50% off and free shipping which is pretty much the only reason I did it.

Shoes... I'm sticking with my sandals and will order another two pairs when Sam's Club has them back. Every time I've ordered shoes online they come in too small.

I don't get into clothing stores much anymore. Or thrift stores. Lately, it's been hardware stores or Costco. Everything else is site to store or online.

My body is much happier with the walk happening first thing in the morning. Still some stiff muscles but much better. And I am reminded myself to take movement breaks. Up and away from the computer.

Supposedly the eclipse is starting here. All I can tell is that the light is weird shades, one of them being the one that can trigger migraines in me. I got the mail and am now making lunch.

Last night I added horse chestnut and natural water pills back to my supplements. A little improvement this morning. Not a lot, but at least some. I'm debating using the Vena to go cuffs at bedtime. I think they will be more useful then.

Hopefully, no disruptions. Internet was a big laggy this morning. Fingers crossed that I get all the important work done before that maybe becomes an issue again.

Nothing out of the ordinary happened at work. However, the point-of-sale machines were all down in the area (retail stores couldn't process debit or credit cards). The stores were taking cash and local checks. The problem was resolved by the time I got to Menard's. Per the cashier: the outage lasted about an hour.

I should also add that PoS outages happen about once every six weeks or so. That's why I carry checks.

Haven't seen or heard of other problems in the area, including drive-by shootings or other bad behavior.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting anything like that. I figured that if we did have problems, they would be phone or internet related.

Nothing happened here, either. We were prepared in the event, though. I wasn't expecting anything, but nothing wasted by being prepared.

We had 92% totality, here. It was cloudy, but the rain had stopped. It got very dark, but not nighttime dark. A thunderstorm rolled through just after it was over. Our yard is flooded.

Since we didn't lose power, my baked chicken breasts turned out great, along with green beans, potatoes, pickles, and toasted/buttered/garlic French bread.

We've been watching soccer games all afternoon. Cary's favorite teams were playing.

Kyrsan, do you have a pattern for the tiered skirts? I’d like to make a few, but can’t find a pattern I like.
Take the measurement of the widest part of your hips and add 25%. Next tier the same. Do that for each tier.

If you want the waistband as part of the top tier, cut that tier wider by enough to do the pocket for the elastic. Cut the last tier just enough wider for the hem. (About 1/2 inch unless you do a 1/4 hem, in which case it won't need to be wider.)

If you want to do a patchwork version, figure out each tier and then figure out how many pieces for each tier. Remember to add for seams.

That's all I've ever done. Occasionally, for fuller ones, I'll increase 1.5 for each tier. Those get big and are impractical for everyday things. But they are fun sometimes.

Do try to keep it to the same type of materials. And prewash fabrics so you don't end up with funny pulls from shrinkage.

Tiers and circles are ones that I've not bought patterns for. The skirts I have partially prepped now are "twirls". I drafted that pattern using a dress I love that has the twirl effect. And I'm likely going to have a couple of denim tiered skirts for everyday stuff. Maybe a 3/4 circle.

SB I followed your lead and have made 3 skillet type meals in the past week or so. In 2 I used cooked rotisserie chicken and one ground beef. I don't know why I stopped doing this. We have been out of town practically every other day. Medical or fun family events. Still have 2 more out of town trips this week.
We are tired!

I need to get to the grocery store and probably need to go to Costco soon. Another out of town trip! But I hope Costco will have good produce and I'll pick up more organic ground beef. And I want some Topo Chico water now that it's warming up. Though tomorrow our high is 56 with much needed rain.

Yikes!! The first snake of the season always freaks me out. I'm doing all of my ditch, creek and gulley work right now, because it is 20+ degrees too cold for the reptiles. I try to hum or whistle when I'm working outside to warn off the critters. Sometimes I forget and do it while I'm shopping. :)

I worked yesterday in the garage.

We had a horrid rat infestation in the river winter.

I was able to clear and clean four shelves of rat poo, pee and dead rats. Icky to the maximum.

I am trying to figure out how to attach strong metal screens to the metal Gorilla shelving to keep the vermin out.

I have one more shelf unit to clean and then need dear husbands help to move his rolling tool chests, planer and other heavy stuff to throughly was the garage floor.

I discovered that rats can eat through Gamma Seal lids. We tried the baking soda with masa/cornmeal rat detergent and it has worked! We also have electric sonic detergents. I plan on trying the hack a gal here wrote about. Where you hot glue dog food on the old fashioned wood based rat trap. Put a smidgen of peanut butter on it and slam you git the rat.

I finished deep cleaning the kitchen and cabinets. I plan on going to the laundromat to wash the throw rugs. I love using the huge washer there and I can dry them there as well. If it is sunny I will do an hour drying time there then hang them up outside at home.

Our bulbs are blooming and so pretty and the blueberries are in full blossom.

We saw our first bees in the garden today.

May everyone have a safe and blessed week.

Its not raining right now but it has been a lot and we expect to get more in the next day or so. Of course we are getting rain because DH watered the garden, LOL.

VA today, yuck, I just hate getting that far away from home (70 miles). I don't particularly trust my doctor, but it could be worse, at least she continues to give me a few pain pills every month, the other doctor in that department does not prescribe opiods. This doctor is the one that does the female parts, which I stopped getting checked out at 65. I'm 77 and have not issues in those areas and they do not run in either side of my family. My family either had COPD or self inflicted problems that caused their deaths.

The prices of things just keep going up and up.

Looks like we won't be getting anymore cold weather. Looks like the low 80's for the next several days, and warm at night.

SouthernBreeze

It's still raining. We're under a flood watch now through Thursday. It's a total washout outside. Temps will be nice for the foreseeable future. Upper 70' to mid 80's after today. I hope those temps stay. Too warm for heat of any kind, and not hot enough for a fan or ac. Just right!

It will be another indoor day with not much to do. I don't even have any canning I can do. Used all my dry beans in the freezer, already. I didn't buy much meat last trip (chicken breasts and pork chops), so no canning there, either. I save the canning days for days like today. My home canned section is still full, so I'm not too concerned.

I'm making one of my pantry skillet meals for supper, tonight, along with flour tortillas. Tortillas are store bought, and I keep stacks of them on hand. I could probably make them myself, but I don't have a recipe for them. One should be easy to find, though. I search the internet for recipes all the time.

Cary's blood draw appointment is tomorrow morning at 9:15, so I most likely won't be here, until we get back. I absolutely hate early morning appointments! I'll have to set the alarm clock! We have gotten in the habit of sleeping til 7 every morning. Plus, the long drive into Big Town.

No honeybees, yet, but we have lots and lots of those nasty boring bees that try to make Swiss cheese out of our cedar siding every year!
