Good morning, Judy. It's pouring rain here. What a welcome sight, too. We're going to have a big cool down for the next few days. Cary fired up the big wood heater this morning.

No home fellowship, today. We're not planning on doing anything, but rest and relax. Cary has two doctor's appointments tomorrow, so we'll be in big town. His urologist wants to check his kidney function again, and the other is with his pcp for a checkup, but he is having so much pain in one of his legs and same hip that he might do ex-rays, too. No shopping planned, afterwards.

:) Morning.

We're up, I tried to stay in bed since a little after 6 am, I didn't want to wake dh up when I got out of bed. Stayed in bed until 6:25 and then rolled out of bed. Takes me way to long to get used to the time change, it doesn't seem to matter when I get up either. Oh well.

I need to can more frozen fruit this week, hamburger, and make sausage with the ground pork and can it. Don't know how much of this will get done though.

Snow coming in at the end of the week.

All take care.

Praying for Cary with his hip and leg pain, rest usually helps me with that. As much as I'm loathe to do so I've been taking an NSAID just about every day for my back pain, I take that instead of a pain pill and if it doesn't help then I take a pain pill, usually don't have to. Its my back that has been giving me grief. In injured my back when I was in the Navy, so I'm service connected.

DH has an appointment on the 8th for his iNr check and I'm probably going to urgent care when he goes. I have what I thought was a bite on my right hand, but now its seems to be a rash and its spreading. And it itches when an new place starts. I took a benadryl one night but that's another thing I don't like to take. Its not good for memory.

You might not want to wait. It could be something minor (ringworm, maybe?)but it's also possible it could be shingles, and that needs to be treated early...

I know that Cary appreciates your prayers. His last visit with his urologist, his creatinine was too high, so they called and made an appointment for him to come in for another blood draw. He has PAD in both legs, but his hip is giving him a lot of pain that goes down into his upper thigh. It's all swollen (upper thigh), but not red or hot to the touch. He can't take just any pain medication for fear that it will damage his kidneys. Remember, he only has 1 1/2 kidney, since his kidney cancer surgery.

you may be correct not to wait. I've had shingles in years past and this is different, shingles is painful and this isn't, just itchy. I'll wait a couple of days and then decide about going. I have some really good ointment, Clobestasol Propionate, that works wonders but didn't use it at first thinking that something bit me and I was using benedryl spray, but its spreading now.

With severe contact dermatitis in the past I've need a cortosone shot to abate it.

We had a good Thanksgiving. Both kids and their families and my one sister. We will get together with hubbys siblings on December 9th. Food was good but I was exhausted by bedtime. Friday I got out the Christmas tree. I haven't decorated it yet. Hopefully this week I will get it done.

I spent some time cleaning out the closet the tree was stored in. I have a big bag to donate. Our daughter had two formals that she said donate. She had sold all but these two. They take up a lot of room.

We went to the auction yesterday. Stayed till the end. Hubby was interested in a gun they had but it went too high. We bought a few other things though. One item was an old apple peeler that clamps to the table. I paid $5 for it. I bought a pan full of small knives and leatherman type tools. I kept the small swiss army knife and one small leatherman tool for me. I am going to let the boys get what they want of what's left. They can carry them to work and not be out anything if it breaks or gets stolen. I also bought some boxes of other stuff. I will get what I want and let the kids look; then donate the rest.

We were in town eating before going to our daughter's after the auction when hubby got a text from our son that they were at the emergency room with the 4 year old grandson. His mom had literally just told him to calm down before he knocked the chair over and hurt hisself. Well, he knocked a heavy kitchen bar chair over and smashed his toe and ripped the nail off. The dr did not think it was broke from looking at the xray. So they cleaned and bandaged it. He will be on antibiotics for a few days. . We ran to our daughter's while waiting on son to get done at the hospital. Then we went to the store and got what they needed take care of little boy including a qt of chocolate ice cream. So our day ended up being really long.

I ordered some stuff online for Christmas and got a couple of black Friday deals. I bought some Auguson Farms cheese blend powder that was under $14 a can. At that price I was willing to try it. It is over $40 regular price. I got both kids a can too.

I hear hubby stirring. Have a good day everyone

Morning all!
It seems as if November has absolutely flown by!

When evaluating “preps and needs”, I am going go focus on dropping some pounds and starting to walk routinely again. Health is the ultimate prep, and I need to focus on that a bit.

Working on Christmas shopping (online) as I am ready to have that completed.

I found a bunch of freebie kindle books and downloaded those this morning (love my kindle!).

I want to add some warm gloves and a good beanie hat for my list. Any recommendations? Links would be awesome.

Have a great day everyone!

Son and I didn't get to sleep until after midnight, so we slept late.

I hadn't realized just how much I needed a staycation. Brain and body are doing better. I think son and I caught a bug but that is life. The barometric shifts are more of an issue at the moment. Although son's migraines are not quite as bad with these. Maybe because he's been staying more hydrated.

So much basic cleaning done. And that also helps stress levels.

Off to see what I can get done today.

I'm doing sourdough bread today. I've been learning to make it - good bread - not those brick's I've done in the past. I like that it only requires flour and water - no yeast. But there is definitely a learning curve.

I figured out how to do a good starter. Happy with that. Now, to get a nice, airy, bread loaf.

After I get a technique that has consistent success then I want a way to cook bread, grid down. That means, 450-500-degrees F. I can't see that being anything other than a pizza oven but those require a lot of wood and a long time to heat up. In my perfect world I'd love to figure out how to have a rocket-pizza-oven.

Anyone have experience with a rocket-pizza-oven or know how to build?

An outdoor wood fired oven has been on my wish list for a long time.

Resting today. Trying to decide whether or not to attend funeral tomorrow. 3 hour drive. Aunt passed away. When I went to look at obit found out that uncle died in June. Really surprised they told me about Aunt. Oh well. Think I will just remember her in my own way.

Enjoying the leftover desserts. One of grands committed to couple pieces of furniture and some books. I dread tackling the library and will miss it. Huge bedroom converted with all shelves full. Told grands they could help themselves to anything but the one wall of autographed collection. Also have an outbuilding with about 10k books in it. ( Bought out a bookstore for cheap a few years ago.) Books will be the last thing I deal with.

Filled 3 more boxes for women's shelter. Sent grands home with assorted items. Sent great grand little girls home with a big bag of stuff for their play kitchen. I had all kinds of plastic measuring spoons and baby spoons and other plastics that will go well with their play collection. I even found a pig of plastic eggs like you put in chicken nests. Forgot to ask if any of them wanted the old metal bed warmer or the rug beaters.

I started to write a post this morning, then got distracted by a nap. I swear that day before yesterday I slept 14 of the 24 hours, and another 12 hours yesterday. Not sick or coming down with anything, just bone deep tired - which might have had something to do with the temperature dropping from the 40's into the low 20's. The temperature drop led me to decide to put my little electric couch throw blanket in between the fleece sheet and lightweight feather comforter I put on my bed; it was nice and cozy.

Now all you folks talking about apple peelers had me writing myself a note to see if I can find mine tomorrow. Mine is a peeler/corer/slicer, and I'm thinking apple crisp sounds like a plan - 'specially since it's going to be pretty chilly tomorrow. I decided I might need something else to warm us up so I looked in the pantry and found a box of Zatarain's Gumbo mix. I'll stop at the store on the way home from the pool for shrimp, smoked sausage and some chicken thighs - Mmm! I do love 'summer food', but the cooler weather has me thinking about gumbo, soups, and stews. Better check my cornmeal stock before I head to town as well. And I'm thinking I might ought to check and see how much stew beef I have in the freezer while I'm at it. This will be the first winter in over 40 years that I haven't had to drag myself back and forth to work - seems like it might be a good thing I bought me some of those old lady stretchy jeans at the Wal-Mart :xpnd:

I don't usually shop the Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales online, but one of the turn out rugs bit the dust yesterday. I thought I could get another year out of them, but evidently not. I found a nice one with no leg straps that is supposed to stay on, so we'll see if it does. It is a good possibility that hubs horse will outlast him, and I don't want to die because an obnoxious 30 year old kicked me in the head.
Reading hubs the riot act did no good, so I took the chain saw out yesterday and got wood myself. I couldn't get the safety bar to engage the last time I tried to use it, so of course the saw wouldn't start. Yesterday I had no trouble and I got enough deadfall for a good fire last night. I was afraid it was going to snow and there are a lot of leaves still on the trees,
which usually means downed limbs and power lines.
Making a fuel and shavings run tomorrow. I keep trying to fill in alll the holes before the driveway gets impassable.
Oh well, breaks over. Off to get some more sand to put in the barn and cut some more firewood.

There was some sun earlier but now its gray out there. DH started working on the roof of the camper, he got the roof top ac out and I helped him get a tarp over the roof. Its been several months since the roof damage and the floor in the living room is rotting. Last year DH cut down a cedar tree and kept some of the lumber from it. He's putting that on the floor. He said he can work on the roof braces by him self, but I'll be out there to fetch and carry for him. I'm so greatfull he is working on this.

Its cold today, I've stayed in my flannel pjs to keep warm, even when I was outside. Nice and cozy. I'm also working on washing bedding.

We are still eating on the chicken, but tonight what is left will go in the freezer. I've still not gotten started on another vegetable soup. I may brown the ground meat and put it in the my largest crock pot along with vegetables, so it will be soup in the morning.

It's been a day. Neither good nor bad. A mix of both. Christmas gifts arrived. So did some items I ordered for us.

One of the items is a drying rack for bags. Well, that's what I'm using it for. Enough room that I managed to get over half the bags washed. And they can be taken down and stored as nice neat trays.

Finally my brain realized why son has been in the shower almost constantly and having more headaches. The heating system has kicked on. I filled his humidifier and put some hinoki wood oil on a cotton ball near where the mist comes out. Within a half hour his headache died and he crashed out. A win for us both.

Still on a cleaning spree. Just a bit more each day.

Found out that Campbell's makes soups that have spicy hot seasoning. I got 5 cans for chili head brother to try out. I'm debating ordering some of the hot pepper candies. But I did order him Black Rifle coffee.

Only one person I don't either have the gift ordered for or know what I'm going to get them. Except for the two additions. I'm still brainstorming for them.

Eight hours of work today. For my main job and my side job. And probably the same for most of the rest of the week.

If you have a cast iron Dutch oven, the kind you put coals on the top, you can use that for baking bread. Probably would not work for a regular loaf, you'd have to do a round loaf. Of course, flat breads can be made on a grill or baked in a Dutch oven.

We had our first snow Saturday. It didn't amount to much, but the ground is still white. It warmed up enough for it to melt off sidewalk and street. Temps are cold with 9 degrees expected for tonight's low. Guess we've been fortunate that it has stayed mild this long. Saw in the paper where in 1943 there was a three-day blizzard in Northern Iowa. Sure glad we didn't have that to deal with this year.

Thanksgiving went well and I ended up with seven here. For some reason the turkey breast was tough but still most was eaten. What was left I ground up and made into sandwich spread for this week's lunches. I'm still eating leftovers and will be the rest of the week. Such a hard life! :)

I was across the street at the senior complex while they were decorating the tree. They were short of lights, so I asked if they wanted the box of strings of lights I had in the basement. They did so I took the box over. I was going to donate them so going nearby was good. There were at least 5 strands with two being virtually unused and quite long. All neatly put away by late dh. I could see there were other Christmas decorations in the bottom of the box and started to dig them out but thought I don't know what's there and haven't missed them in 8 years and closed the box.

My former neighbor died in a house fire last week. I just heard about it yesterday and still don't know any details.

My dd just called to tell me my cousin had passed today. He had cancer which he was told was terminal with the initial diagnosis. He was seven years younger than me. I'm comforted by knowing he was a born-again Christian. I need to call my sister and tell her.

I've been trying to get started on a clean up and purge of my house for a long time and finally got going today. I also got my booths restocked after having to let them slide a little for most of the summer and that was my last urgent thing to do...been working on those a few weeks.

On the warmer days, I'm going to be working outside because we had to drag a ton of stuff over from my parents' house when it sold and then my DIL's father had to store his vintage vehicles here for a month or so. They finally got to start moving into their new home today but it's three hours away. I'll also be cleaning up my garden and getting it ready for spring. DH wants me to get help but I enjoy it and need the exercise. I won't let him help because he's working too many hours already.

My first project to kick it all off with was rearranging and topping off my pantry. We've been buying accordingly but had no room left in the pantry so we had stuff stacked up everywhere. I managed to make a little more room today and find a place for everything. I'm officially done. I refuse to stock more food than we can rotate through before it's too old...been there, done that. I'll replace what we use going forward but that is it. I will be doing more home canned stuff now. That is what we really like and as I mentioned before, we need more canned dried beans, slaw and dark meat chicken. I'm loving my Nesco/Carey canner because I don't have to lift it and it's so convenient to use for small batches.

Honestly I am not sure but will play around today. I believe I can with my kindle Scribe I just got, but just took it out of the box last night. I am still learning about it. I got it for journaling and reading. I know they sell planners, puzzles for it on etsy which are pdfs so believe so. Will try to learn more today.

Morning all.
Just stating some goals out there so I can focus on them today:
1) meal planning for the week
2) writing down all of Christmas purchases and get those organized
3) explore airline costs (ugh!) of flying - to visit family across country
4) laundry put away

COLD temps expected here tonight (for us anyway). So far hubby’s greenhouse is doing great!

Cary's doctor visits didn't turn out too well, yesterday. We went first to get his blood draw to check his kidney function. The office called within 30 mins telling Cary that his creatinine was elevated even higher. Was diagnosed with 3rd stage chronic kidney disease. He is being referred to a Nephrologist. So, we're waiting on that appointment. We went on to his PCP appointment. He did a thorough exam of his right thigh. Diagnosed with a huge fatty tumor there. Doc ordered an ultrasound and x-rays. Found out that he also has degenerative arthritis in that hip and knee. Waiting now on another appointment with an Orthopedist. He has another appointment in 2 weeks to see his PCP again. This is all a very fluid situation, and things can change as we see these other specialists. Surgery sometime in the future to remove the tumor.

Our schedule for the month of December. 3rd is monthly shopping day. 11th is my dentist appointment. 13th is Cary's next appt. with his PCP. 14th is Mac Degen appointment for me. 17th we have to pick Mom up in Alabama. 21st I take her to her doctor's appt. This isn't counting our home fellowship Sundays, and any other appointments that might come from all the new specialists. Plus, Christmas.

Today, we're just trying to adjust to this new reality. We sure weren't expecting any of this. We're trusting God to have a perfect plan for us through all of this. We still are giving Him all praise and thanks.

I must be getting used to the wood stove, when DH first lite it last month it made me sick, but now not at all. I guess that happens every year.

Going to urgent care at the VA tomorrow for my rash, its spreading.

Another sunny day, but on the cold side. I guess 50 may not seem cold to some folks, but here in Louisiana it can feel cold.

I read all your posts every day but don't normally share a lot myself. However, I got a phenomenal deal at the thrift store yesterday--so excited. Ten Land's End 100% cashmere sweaters for $25. (I can't imagine what they would have cost retail. Some people sure have the money.) They are all 2X, unfortunately, but DD thinks she'll be able to alter them. (I would have tried myself in years past, but she's a much better seamstress than I now, and she has a much better sewing machine.) Even if altering doesn't work out, they're more comfortable than t-shirts to wear around the house all winter--and keep me beautifully warm at the same time.

Sorry to hear about Cary's diagnosis. I will add him to my prayer list.

50 degrees in Iowa is light jacket weather! It's all in what we're used to, I guess.

Tomorrow is podiatrist appointment in town, so I intend to shop afterwards. Thursday is Bible study in the a.m. and dentist in the p.m. I'm really NOT looking forward to the dentist as he will be preparing a tooth for cap and putting on a temporary cap. It's the far back molar and I have such a gag reflex it will be pretty awful dealing with the process. Close my eyes and pray and I will get through it. Then there's the cost. Holy buckets, dentists are expensive. Last week's cleaning and x-rays were $286 and I'm anticipating $1,000 for the cap. Hopefully I will not be hit with any additional big expenses before the year's over.

I have not accomplished anything the last few days. I have a small hope that I will manage to do something (even if it's wrong) yet today.

I've done one load of laundry and changed out the bed sheets, today. The rest of my time has been spent surfing the net trying to find more info on all of Cary's new diagnosis's. Diet changes and all that goes with kidney disease. It's the same as a heart healthy diet for the most part. Low protein, low cholesterol, low salt, low potassium diet. Been cooking this way all the time, except for the low protein low potassium part. He loves his meat, potatoes, and eggs.

His leg is still hurting pretty bad. He can only have Tylenol for pain, and it doesn't help much. He made 3 trips to the woodshed to bring up more firewood for the indoor wood box, and that did him in with pain. Mom yelled at me for not doing that myself. I can't do it, because of my back injury from surgery. That part she just doesn't understand. I would help if I could. I've tried using our garden wagon to load and bring up to the porch, but I still have to lift it all to get it inside. I'll try to do what I can to help tomorrow. I can load the wagon, and he can bring it on inside the house from the porch. He won't be doing any more work on the wood pile for a long while.

The cost of dental work has kept me from getting work done. The last thing I had done was a crown on a tooth that had been one end of a three unit bridge. The back tooth on the bridge became really loose so I had it taken off and the one tooth capped. This was several years ago and it was $900. I've had a crown come off another back tooth and I've living with the result, no pain. The tooth next to that one lost part of a filling. I'm living with that too. Just can't justify depleating my emergency savings for something that doesn't hurt. However, a front tooth would be different, that I would have done.

Praying for SB and Cary, sorry to hear about the issues, praying for you.

I went out to the camper to look for that sweater that I wanted and it was right on the end of the bed. Its in the washer now and I've ordered a zipper for it. I may even have a zipper for it, its been several years since it broke. I have other sweaters but this one is so comfortable.

Because of all my molars crumbling from Sjogren's Syndrome and having to have them all pulled and surgically removed, all I have left are my front teeth. 6 on top and 8 on bottom. We have no dental insurance, and I've already been out a few thousand dollars on what I've already had done. I'm probably looking at full dentures in my future. That will be another few thousand dollars to have the teeth left pulled and for the dentures. Mom got a new set last year, and they cost her $4000. That was just for the dentures!
