Still praying for you, two.

I'm doing a lot of cleaning, today. Laundry, sweeping, mopping, dusting, and trying to clean up the front porch from all the dirt and sawdust that was flung onto it. I will almost need a shovel to get that job done. It is so dry and dusty with no rain in sight.

It's going to take a while to get use to our new normal outside.

How are you feeling today? Prayers continue!
Tired. Very tired. The body is clearing the last of the mess. No new blood. But my RBC and hemoglobin are still low. And immature new cells are high.

It's aggravating. But I'm doubling up on the supplements I take for anemia. And drinking. So thirsty almost continually right now. (It's not blood sugar. I checked.) I think it's just pure liquid replacement.

Today is laundry. And slowly tackling the kitchen mess that occurred because I'm so tired. And sewing. Friend needs some serious patching done on four pairs of pants. And that's something I can do when I'm tired in other ways.

Friend came up and cut the top boards for the garden storage. And 5 of the door frames. He started asking me questions and I think that's when he realized just how much the bleeding had drained me. I can normally think through and have answers really quickly. I just stood there for a minute moving things around. And when they wouldn't work the way my brain thought they would, I couldn't make the mental leap.

Fortunately my brain threw me the solution after a minute or two of delay.

Mom thinks I don't need "more storage". But then she also doesn't know that the plan is to turn the small backyard shed into a rabbit and quail shed. Maybe with a fish tank or two. Because that will just cause her to have a meltdown.

95% of the gardens are outside of the fence. So the plan is to move all the gardening items to the new storage. That will clear out most of the things in that shed. And then I'll need to do a small "cupboard" for the gas and kerosene containers. I think I'm actually going to go ahead and purchase one of the outdoor Rubbermaid cabinets for those.

I've had 2 cans of this food item in my pantry but have never used it before last night. I really didn't know what to use it in. It's the Great Value brand of Fajita Seasoned Beef Strips in a 12oz can. I made stir fried veggies last night for my supper meal and wanted some kind of meat to mix in with the veggies. I used a can of this and WOW. It was very good. I was pleasantly surprised. I waited, until the veggies were almost done, then added the drained meat. The seasoning in the beef added a lot of flavors to the veggies.

Since I only had 2 cans in storage, now, only one, I'm ordering a case or two from Walmart. They have stopped carrying it in the store (at least at my Walmart). It will add meat and lots of flavor to several foods I make.

Has anyone else used it?

That sounds interesting but at $23 for four cans I can't afford it. I should have tried it when it was cheaper.

I understand. For $23 I can get 4 meals off of that, though, and added food security, since it's shelf stable. With the price of beef being so high, it's a reasonable price. You're very blessed. You have your own venison and wild pork to use.

I may be out of touch with the price of meat. It sounds good though, sometimes we get tired of venison and wild port. DH butchered a pig yesterday. He fried pork steak last night but it was too tough for me to eat. We only have one of those hand cranked tenderizers.

I just put in a pick up order for walmart for tomorrow after church. This is my somewhat semi monthly shop. I did add a couple cans of some things, just to replace. And finally a few things that might be needed for seasonal illnesses. I did a small shop last Sunday at a different wm but they didn't have the otc items I wanted. Although sometimes they are hard to find and usually a pick up will snag them. I don't know why but I felt the need to add some tonic water to the pick up. I've never liked it though.

One thing I really liked was frozen kale, but they have discontinued it and I can't seem to find it anywhere else. so I ordered a container of kale powder from the river. And some kale seeds to sprout. I've already got some to plant but since we've had such bad luck with gardening it seems kind of futile. But who knows what the future holds.

We are going to a dinner and shot gun auction at a local church tonight. This year they invited women, they usually don't. I doubt DH would go without me.

Kale might grow well for you through the winter. Maybe get your hubby to fill a couple of large pots with 1/4 goat manure and 3/4 soil. Make sure there is good drainage. Put them in a sunny spot, and plant around October 1st.

I'm just a bit north of Judy, and we sow our greens of all types directly into freshly tilled soil. We have winter greens, until we get a killing frost, usually in January.

We're still getting ripe tomatoes from our garden. Last year, we were still getting tomatoes, until a big frost got them.

OK, so, kicking my prepping into gear.
I am fixing my chicken pen, creating a rabbit hutch for meat rabbits, creating two small raised beds for a garden, bought some vege seeds, and eventually plan to have a small fish pond and micro green area.
Oh, I need to locate some dwarf fruit trees too.

Making an Aldi's run today. Have to drive an hour and a half.

Spent yesterday working on the downsizing. It feels so good to see the empty spaces getting bigger. Cannot imagine how Summerthyme did it when moving from the farm.

We are still getting tomatoes as well. A couple more cucumbers are on the vine. Hubby started some lettuce going for us as we love weekly salads.

I have mustard and turnip seeds that need to get in the ground. We've been tied up with the tree, and it's just really, really dry right now. I like Spring lettuce to make salads with all the other early garden veggies like radishes and green onions. I failed to grow any this past Spring, due to it being so wet.

If you can, try to get some rabbits from a meat breed. New Zealands, or California Whites. They have been bred to be meatier (although nothing like the difference between beef c9ws and the old types!) and to be able to handle multiple, large litters (their litter size is larger than average as well), and have good mothering ability.

If you prefer the look of colored rabbits, New Zealands come in several colors, although the whites are most popular for commercial breeders, because they can be dyed in any color, for the fur industry.

Avoid the giant breeds! You're feeding a lot of bone and heavy hides... your feed to meat ratio isn't nearly as good. And while i loved my Rex rabbits (they have fur like cut velvet), if you have no plans to tan hides, you're much better off sticking with the meat breeds. My Rex's often had mothering issues, but since I also had New Zealands, I was able to foster abandoned bunnies onto a New Zealand doe, most times.

Oh, and the Rex's don't have as much padding on their feet... if you are using wire bottomed cages, which I highly recommend, they can be subject to hock abscesses. A board in the cage helped, but manure can end up sticking to fur if you have a completely solid bottom.

Yup, got a lot of that from my reading already, but there seems to be a butt-load more to learn!
I already decided on New Zealands, and have a friend who is going to help build the rabbitry.
I'm actually kind of excited!

Great! There's an old book called "Raising Rabbits The Modern Way" by Robert Bennett (IIRC...
if I could find my copy, I'd send it to you, but it's buried in a storage container with a couple thousand other books I'll probably never have a home for, again :-( )

Anyway, it's how to do it "right"... and he's quite opinionated! But while it advises against supplementing with greens or vegetables, etc... it also explains why, and the problems it can cause. After following his recommendations for our first year, I was able to branch out into more survival/homestead oriented methods, and still maintain high production and healthy bunnies.

The biggest problem is the babies are SO stinking cute! But they grow fast, and if you don't butcher by 10 weeks, you WILL be butchering pregnant does, unless you put them in separate growing pens.

Oh, Pure Boost looks nice. I may get some for the go bags but I'm going to have to stick with Liquid IV for this issue. Caffeine is on my no list unless it's an emergency. I don't get unaddicted to it as quickly as I used to. And it reduces the effectiveness of my beta blocker.

Last time I researched I ended up determining to go with New Zealand California crosses. And to work on slow introducing fresh food and home dehydrated foods to either replace or supplement pellet feed. The hope is that eventually the breeding pairs, as well as the babies, can eat a normal diet.

If I could find a breed that can handle that already, I may change what breed I go with.

Better information may have appeared on the intervening years, except the chatter I've heard seems to be pretty much the same.

I don't like waste though, so I'll need to either learn to cure the skins. Or find someone to barter with, x number of raw skins for x cured skins.

I'll also need to see if there's a use for quail feathers.

Well, I managed to get everything I wanted to do done, today, except all the mopping. I have had bad low back pain for the last few days, and it just would not allow me to do the mopping. Sweeping was bad enough. I've also cooked supper, washed the dishes, and put them all away. I am so tired.

Home fellowship at our house, tomorrow, so I needed to get all of this cleaning done. I would have been so ashamed to let anyone see all the dust over everything. It all came in the house and on everything outside from all the tree and limb shaking while the tree was being cut. My furniture was covered in a film of dust. I never let it build up like that. The front porch was so full of dirt and sawdust that I just put the jet nozzle on the water hose and jetted it all off. Looks nice and clean, now.

I still have some last minute preps to do first thing in the morning, but I'm satisfied that I got most of it done, today.

I believe my back pain is coming from an old back surgery. It flares up from time to time and is very painful.

Drive 20mph this morning to take boys projects to fair. Scared of tipping them though I had them packed good.
Little prayer they win something, even small ribbon would be great.
Not much going on. Scots echo and X-ray look fantastic. Ejection fraction is almost 55! Very good. We're doing a little more exercise. Labs are good too so hopefully not on dialysis much longer.
I planted Brussels. They are coming along good. The kale and tomatoes are still going and peppers and okra as well.
We don't really need anything other than things we use a lot like milk, butter etc.
Daughter still canning up a storm.
Damper and one stove pipe need changed out. Try to do that this week.
Also finish up the other room upstairs. Clean paint and plastic windows for winter.
All good. Prayer for all of you in storms way.
