Celestial Space Weather/Sun Spot

As for the weather 400 years ago there was no official record kept back then. But sometime about 7-8 years ago a small group of people in europe decided to try and find some clues of what really happened.
Digging into and going over old archives revealed little, so someone suggested going to some of the older monasteries around europe and sure enough they allowed them to have a look and even helped them and they found enough written about daily life to give them a very good idea of what took place over passage of many years. The rain's and storms they have seen in europe over the last few years is only the beginning.
So unless the Sun does a complete turn around it's only going to get colder and how bad it will get this time around? No one really knows it's almost imposable to predict what may happen more than a year or two out into the future and even then it's a shot in the dark.

Here is a link to a doc that summarizes european weather reportrd at the time

you have to remember there were no thermometers in general use until late in the 1700’s
so they report frost and cold as they describe dismal conditions developing

it is a long and useful read

Thanks I saved it to my download and I have not seen this before and it's not the same report I was talking about. In my youth I had a few opportunities to read some really old private diaries from Long Island and a few carried from New England areas. Life was different and so was some of the language and or words used for some things. Deciphering the hand writing made for slow reading/understanding and the need for a very large dictionary to get the meaning of words used and some of it compleatly lost to time. So they did bring up weather events and talk of snow up so high on their body or saying as high as the eave of the house (New England area) and these diries from various people ranged in date from 1670s to mid 1800s

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It is very long; spent an hour just on the 1600's Dalton Minimum era.

It was very depressing to read about severe famines when parents would eat their own children, so great was the hunger.

Apparently wild extremes of weather were common; severe Winters followed by high heat and droughts in the Summer.

Noticing it here because of degradation of my radio reception. It's not just one station, either.

A little update we're at 93 spotless days.
Now sooner or later or if this solar minimum racks up another 11 spotless days we will have tied the year 2017 spotless count of 104 spotless days.

Wow, thanks for that update!

TWO+ WEEKS WITHOUT SUNSPOTS: The sun has been without spots for 15 straight days. To find an equally long stretch of blank suns, you have to go all the way back to November 2009 when the sun was emerging from the deepest solar minimum in a century. However, 15 days without sunspots is not a long time. At the nadir of that century-class solar minimum in 2008, the sun was blank for 52 consecutive days. Conclusion: Solar minimum is just beginning and we have a long way to go. Free: Aurora alerts.

(We are currently 102 days without a sunspot for 2018, which is 52% of the year.)

Yep and waiting for that 104 day mark in the next two days if it keeps up without a sunspot showing up.

We have gone 21 days in a row without sunspots making it a total of 108 spotless day so far this year.

See how long this keeps going.

Update!
We have a micro sized sunspot trying to emerge and almost smack dab in the middle of the sun and will have to wait until tomorrow to see if it faded or whatever it is just hanging in there as something they think may turn into a sunspot.

As of right now we have 111 spotless day to the year 2018 making it 55% of the year without sunspots and the current stretch is 24 days and if it makes it to 28 spotless days it will be four consecutive week's without sunspots.

After two days of this wannabe sunspot trying to emerge it finely did it and it's officially now a sunspot even though it so small you can't see without special equipment.
That was 23 day stretch without sunspots.

Solar Minimum Deepens

The Sun has been without sunspots for 30 of the past 31 days. To find a similar stretch of blank sun, you have to go back to 2009 when the sun was experiencing the deepest solar minimum in a century. Clearly, solar minimum has returned.

Six days ago we had a micro sized sunspot popup and lasted half a day or so before it faded and still in this new stretch of spotless sun of 6 days and counting.
We have racked up a total of 117 spotless days for the year 2018. The Calendar year from January 1. to July 28. this makes for 56% of the year without sunspots.

We are in a 9 day stretch and so far we have racked up 120 spotless days for the year 2018 and 152 days before the years end.

Be Well

may all be well
I'm going to start paying attention to this thread.

I have the feeling that at least here in the PNW, fall is going to be very early. Thinking maybe a hard winter. Just feels that way.

Ok; We just went a 10 day stretch and now have another micro sized sunspot breaking the spotless cycle.
So now we're at 57% of the year without sunspots and the total spotless day count so far is 121 days.

EDIT ADD: we now have only 150 days left to the end of the year 2018.

The micro sized sunspot that showed up on the 08-02-2018 has faided away and back again starting a new stretch of spotless sun.
Because of that we backed down from 57% to 56% of the year being spotless, now a 122 spotless days and counting.

The Sun has been without Sunspots now for 41 of the past 44 days.
Currently we are in a new 7 day stretch of spotless Sun and because of this we are also upto 58% of the year of spotless Sun with a total of 128 spotless days for the year.

New Sunspot today and see how long this lasts. We went a 10 day stretch and are now at 132 spotless days for the year 2018 and at 58% of the year with no sunspots.
We now have only 138 days left to the end of the year 2018.

I've been wondering if the weak spots were actually strong enough to count.?
That could mildly skew the result.

I've read somewhere that some of the smaller spots we can detect now would not have been seen during the last Grand Minimum. I wonder how the two eras would compare if this were taken into account?

That's something I'd never considered in this context. Thanks for giving me a new perspective.

As for past Grand Minimum's there is no way to prove or disprove ultra small sunspots that may have happened. But rest assured that it did happen as we're seeing it now, I think the longer this go's on the more we will feel the effects of the sun going into a extended cooling faze. These Grand Solar Minimum's and the effects it has of weather patterns is unpredictable, we know it seems to have a somewhat set pattern to be expected in some parts of the world like lots of spring and summer rain, cooler temps and colder longer winters.

We're back to blank again as in no Sunspots. From 08-15-2018 we had a Sunspot appear and later joined by another that poped up out of nowhere and both grew in size until they both were bigger than earth.
Now at 133 spotless days for the year and counting.

Could you assign a number according to what size each sunspot is and take an average of them all? Compare GSM's this way?

Bringing things up to date for everyone!
We have gone a a total of ten days (spotless) since the last sunspots and because of the last streach of sunspots it kocked the precentage of spotless days back to 55% and now back upto 56% of the year being spotless.
There are only 141 days left to the year 2018.

Hay new sunspot showed up last night and poped up in the right hand side of the sun and it's another very small one and may only last a few days.
We're still at 141 spotless days and 56% of the year without sunspots.

Nothing fantastic to report other than we are now at 150 spotless days for the year 2018.
In another two days we will have tied the year 2007 for 152 spotless days.
We now have only 101 days to the end of the year 2018.
