Yeah, every time I turn on the TV and look at the weather, they've revised the totals upwards for Central Iowa.

I got up early and finished the areas the snow blower can't get into, like the porch and back by the gate. I really don't know where we are going to put another 10" of snow. We got 9" from the last storm.

Our final total, after it stopped snowing, was 10.7, however it looks like our yard got closer to a foot of snow.

Early this morning SC Wisconsin got 3" of light fluffy snow, forecast of 8-12" by Saturday morning but wind speeds forecast are increasing to 40MPH with gusts over 50. Local weather geeks are starting to say the evil "B" word, we haven't had an all out blizzard in quite a few years. It may be worse in eastern WI near Lake Michigan and on the other side of the lake in Michigan you better get out and buy your milk and bread tonight.

the "B" word was brought up on the local news at noon... basically the wind needs to be blowing a steady 35+mph for more than three hours before it's declared a blizzard, it has nothing to do with actual snow fall. so we shall see what happens in the next 24 to 48 hours. Des Moines, IA Ch 13 NBC affiliate news.

If they are right about the wind speeds, it'll meet the criteria for a blizzard.

In any case, I topped off my gas tank and stopped at the grocery store. We'll see what this evening brings.

-5 this morning in N MN, though it's fairly still out there. We are not supposed to get much snow out of this thing, maybe 3-4 inches across the weekend, but the wind will be a big factor ongoing. Lot of times it's the wind that take down the power lines, or drops trees over them, so be ready for it. You guys south are still going to get worse winds than us up in the far north. Anywho - charging up the small electronics, drawing some water and keeping backup light and heat primed just in case.

I don't have to go anywhere 'til the middle of next week either - haha - except to the barn. That's what ya call "the freedom of retirement"! Same deal for you guys who work from home.

It's not looking good here in North Alabama either. Low Monday night predicted to be 8 degrees. Horrible winds up to 90mph today/night. Maybe even some snow. I sure hope they are wrong. I dread having no power. Ours goes out if a squirrel farts on the lines.

Ours usually does too and its flickering on and off here in Mississippi. Starting to get rough around here.

WSB radio just reported seeing video footage of tornado damage coming out of Mississippi--did not have an exact location and will give more details as they get it.

You Timebomb folks down there let us know if you're OK!

Loud af thunderstorm and hailstorms in parts of DFW last night. Cars outside covered in dirt. And temps around freezing right now.

NE MS is under a tornado watch till 11 am. We just had some loud thunderboomers roll over us here in the Tupelo area. I haven't seen any news reports, yet, of where the tornado damage is located.

An inch of snow in Olympia, WA, but nothing yet along Willamette Valley in Oregon. Schools letting out 3 hours early in the latter area, as stupid Portland does not want a repeat of last February when roads became parking lots after 4pm during that storm.

Snow and wind have been ramping up nicely this morning in SE WI.

Looks like a winter storm that will match some of the hype.

Mesoscale Discussion 0055
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1024 AM CST Fri Jan 12 2024

Areas affected...Eastern Iowa into northern Illinois and southern
Wisconsin

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 121624Z - 122030Z

SUMMARY...Areas of 1+ in/hour snowfall rates appear probable within
a broader swath of moderate snowfall across eastern Iowa into
southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois through early afternoon.

DISCUSSION...Surface observations over the past couple of hours have
been reporting visibilities between 1/4 to 1/2 mile from eastern IA
into southern WI and far northern IL. Sustained 20-25 knot winds
across eastern IA are supporting areas of blowing snow per blowing
snow model output and web cams, which is contributing to the reduced
visibilities. Further east into WI/IL, weaker winds suggest moderate
to heavy snowfall rates are the primary contributors to the reduced
visibility. Regional radar mosaics support this idea with relatively
short (~1 hour) snow bands noted over the past hour. These bands
appear to be mainly driven by strong warm air advection within the
0-2 km layer based on regional VWP observations. Despite the
magnitude of the warm air advection, 12 UTC and recent RAP forecast
soundings suggest this ascent is displaced from the DGZ within the
3-4 km layer. This will modulate snowfall rates across the broader
region, but heavier snowfall rates at/above 1 in/hour will be
possible within the transient snow bands. This trend should continue
through early/mid afternoon before stronger ascent within the warm
advection regime shifts northeast with the synoptic low.

NWS is debating whether to pull the blizzard trigger for the U.P. Criteria is 35mph sustained winds for 3 hours and right now they are forecasting 30mph sustained and gusts to 50mph at the lakeshore. That is a blizzard in my book. Not gonna even try to go into work at 5am in the morning. In the 12 inch to 22 inch cone with the drifting on top. Will mean going out every four hours even overnight to keep up with snow removal.

The plus is that their isn’t a lot of snow on the ground yet by our standards as up to this point its been a very mild winter so I can’t complain too much. Next few days though will be a three dog night with the temps going south.

Blowing and drifting here in Central Iowa. I think six or so inches have fallen but with the wind, it's hard to tell. My driveway has totally drifted in. It has been snowing all morning, a light fluffy snow.

I'll go out later and shovel the snow away from the garage door. The rest of it can wait until the wind dies down.
